  As you may know, Steam doesn't like no-admin accounts for installing games or whatsoever. In my case, I have a user in my computer that usually install a lot of games and every time I have to put my password to successfully play them. Blame, /bin/SteamService.exe. I came up with a solution: using RunAs to make Steam run as the admin user. But that is a potential security risk. So instead of that, I'm asking if is possible to do the following: Hot to run SteamService.exe with high trust levels (or admin privileges) automatically when Steam calls it? That way he can play and install games in Steam leaving the rest of the system alone. I don't mind if the user has to click "yes or no", but without prompt its better because some games asks every time they're executed.

• MadMACs is attempting to run after wifi autoconnect in Windows 7

  I have been trying to get MadMACs to run on startup with my Win 7 x64 install. I've used the default registry startup option that is built into the script, but when I startup wlan0 is not randomized, and, in fact, the popup asking whether I want to allow the program to modify my machine comes up after WiFi connection (and obviously before the script has run). I would really like to get this working, but I'm at a dead end. Googling has not returned anything useful so any nudges in the right direction would be appreciated!

It was a seamless, integrated experience, ideal for those one-off application compatibility issues. I was thinking to install VirtualBox in Windows 8 and then run Ubuntu as guess OS. Since Hyper-V is a Type-0 hipervisor, may I know does this bring the same benefit if I have Ubuntu Linux install as a virtual guess OS? Meaning, if I turning the Ubuntu on (the guess OS), does the Ubuntu still able to access the hardware information like nVidia display card or processor information? I'm just curious to know can this be done?

• Shell script only executes partially when run with CRON

  I've written a shell script that does the following: Retrieve mail from a POP3 account (using GetMail) Save a copy of that email to S3 (using AWS CLI) Email me the filesize of the email The script runs fine manually, and technically runs from CRON, but it only seems to be sending the email. The getmail and S3 bits don't seem to run. Everything I've read seems to hammer home the message that I need to be careful about relative paths and the like when using CRON, but I think I'm using absolute paths everywhere I need to be, so I'm stumped as to what the issue could be.   I'm currently running Vista for my HTPC, and am planning on upgrading to Win7 soon. However, I've been considering installing it as a VM so that I can run Windows Server 2008 and/or Windows Home Server. The single requirement is that the HTPC must boot up to Windows Media Center with absolutely no user intervention. I need to be able to hit the power button have it go. I've got this working currently, so I don't need to keep a keyboard or mouse plugged in - all I use is my remote. If possible, I'd love to be able to do these other things: Use Win2k8 Server as a VM host for Win7 Pro and WHS. This also lets me run IIS7 for doing ASP.NET development Use WHS for all the wonderful things it does for a home network Are either of the two optional things possible while meeting the WMC requirement?

I have got virtual box installed in the external hard drive and made a machine named ubuntu and installed the latest ubuntu version which i got from the .iso download. Now after much juggling around i got ubuntu running on the machine which i did the whole installation. When i move it to another machine the virtual box just woudnt open.   I would like to have these commands run as the ss user from root mkdir bin cp -r /opt/gitolite . gitolite/install -ln gitolite setup -pk ss.pub mkdir -p .gitolite/hooks/common ln -s /opt/pre-receive .gitolite/hooks/common/ so everything is executed in /home/ss. The 4th line requires $HOME/bin as you can see from the 3rd line. The only way I can get it to work is by adding su -c "command" ss to each line, which is not a nice hack. This is an extension to my previous question, where I wasn't precise enough. Question How do I run all these commands as a script in a practical way?

  So I'm a beginner in XML DOM and JavaScript but I've run into an issue. I'm using the script to display my XML data in a table on an existing site. The problem comes in nesting a loop in my JavaScript code. I somewhat understand why it's doing that, but I don't know how to nest another loop so when the script runs it displays all the titles for an author, not just the first. Whenever I try to nest a loop it breaks the entire script.

• Run unit tests in Jenkins / Hudson in automated fashion from dev to build server

  We are currently running a Jenkins (Hudson) CI server to build and package our .net web projects and database projects. Everything is working great but I want to start writing unit tests and then only passing the build if the unit tests pass. We are using the built in msbuild task to build the web project. With the following arguments ... MsBuild Version .NET 4.0 MsBuild Build File ./WebProjectFolder/WebProject.csproj Command Line Arguments ./target:Rebuild /p:Configuration=Release;DeployOnBuild=True;PackageLocation=".\obj\Release\WebProject.zip";PackageAsSingleFile=True We need to run automated tests over our code that run automatically when we build on our machines (post build event possibly) but also run when Jenkins does a build for that project. If you run it like this it doesn't build the unit tests project because the web project doesn't reference the test project. The test project would reference the web project but I'm pretty sure that would be butchering our automated builds as they exist primarily to build and package our deployments. Running these tests should be a step in that automated build and package process. Options ... Create two Jenkins jobs. one to run the tests ... if the tests pass another build is triggered which builds and packages the web project. Put the post build event on the test project. Build the solution instead of the project (make sure the solution contains the required tests) and put post build events on any test projects that would run the nunit console to run the tests. Then use the command line to copy all the required files from each of the bin and content directories into a package. Just build the test project in jenkins instead of the web project in jenkins. The test project would reference the web project (depending on what you're testing) and build it. Problems ... There's two jobs and not one. Two things to debug not one. One to see if the tests passed and one to build and compile the web project. The tests could pass but the build could fail if its something that isn't used by what you're testing ... This requires us to know exactly what goes into the build. Right now msbuild does it all for us. If you have multiple teams working on a project everytime an extra folder is created you have to worry about the possibly brittle command line statements. This seems like a corruption of our main purpose here. The tests should be a step in this process not the overriding most important thing in this process. I'm also not 100% sure that a triggered build is the same as a normal build does it do all the same things as a normal build. Move all the correct files in the same way move them all into the same directories etc. Initial problem. We want to run our tests whenever our main project is built. But adding a post build event to the web project that runs against the test project doesn't work because the web project doesn't reference the test project and won't trigger a build of this project. I could go on ... but that's enough ... We've spent about a week trying to make this work nicely but haven't succeeded. Feel free to edit this if you feel you can get a better response ...

  Once upon a time, I remembered this stuff by heart. Over time, my understanding has diluted and I mean to refresh it. As I recall, any so called single threaded application has two threads: a) the primary thread that has a pointer to the main or DllMain entry points; and b) For applications that have some UI, a UI thread, a.k.a the secondary thread, on which the WndProc runs, i.e. the thread that executes the WndProc that recieves messages that Windows posts to it. In short, the thread that executes the Windows message loop. For UI apps, the primary thread is in a blocking state waiting for messages from Windows. When it recieves them, it queues them up and dispatches them to the message loop (WndProc) and the UI thread gets kick started. My questions are: a) Is my above understanding correct? b) What in the name of hell is the Dispatcher? c) Point me to a resource where I can get a better understanding of threads from a Windows/Win32 perspective and then tie it up with high level languages like C#. Petzold is sparing in his discussion on the subject in his epic work. Although I believe I have it somewhat right, a confirmation will be relieving.

• vectorizing a for loop in numpy/scipy?

  I'm trying to vectorize a for loop that I have inside of a class method. The for loop has the following form: it iterates through a bunch of points and depending on whether a certain variable (called "self.condition_met" below) is true, calls a pair of functions on the point, and adds the result to a list. Each point here is an element in a vector of lists, i.e. a data structure that looks like array([[1,2,3], [4,5,6], ...]). Here is the problematic function: def myClass: def my_inefficient_method(self): final_vector = [] # Assume 'my_vector' and 'my_other_vector' are defined numpy arrays for point in all_points: if not self.condition_met: a = self.my_func1(point, my_vector) b = self.my_func2(point, my_other_vector) else: a = self.my_func3(point, my_vector) b = self.my_func4(point, my_other_vector) c = a + b final_vector.append(c) # Choose random element from resulting vector 'final_vector' self.condition_met is set before my_inefficient_method is called, so it seems unnecessary to check it each time, but I am not sure how to better write this. Since there are no destructive operations here it is seems like I could rewrite this entire thing as a vectorized operation -- is that possible? any ideas how to do this?

• Beginner question - Loop invariants (Specifically Ch.3 of "Accelerated C++")

  Hi - as I said, a complete beginner question here. I'm currently working my way through "Accelerated C++" and just came across this in chapter 3: // invariant: // we have read count grades so far, and // sum is the sum of the first count grades while (cin >> x) { ++count; sum += x; } The authors follow this by explaining that the invariant needs special attention paid to it because when the input is read into the variable x, we will have read count+1 grades and thus the invariant will be untrue. Similarly, when we have incremented the counter, the variable sum will no longer be the sum of the last count grades (in case you hadn't guessed, it's the traditional program for calculating student marks). What I don't understand is why this matters. Surely for just about any other loop, a similar statement would be true? For example, here is the book's first while loop (the output is filled in later): // invariant: we have written r rows so far while (r != rows) { // write a row of output std::cout << std::endl; ++r; } Once we have written the appropriate row of output, surely the invariant is false until we have incremented r, just as in the other example? It's probably something really obvious, anyone could enlighten me as to what makes these two cases different, that'd be great - and thanks in advance for taking the time to answer such a complete novice question.   Hi, I'm trying to do the following: I have a set of images and select (dropdown) HTML elements, 30 of each one. I'm trying to use AddEventListener on a loop from 1 to 30 so that when I change the value of the select, the image src is updated (and the image changes).   I need to change the shipping carrier drop-down and shipping method radio button once via a javascript function, not forever. • glitchy stuttery iphone game loop

  This is a problem I've been trying to solve for a few days now, and I've looked at the various solutions on stackoverflow and nothing has really seemed to work for me. I'm making an iPhone game with OpenGLES graphics and accelerometer input, at this point it's very simple, but the rendering is already pretty bad... it stutters and seems to jump back or forward in time. It doesn't happen a lot, but it happens enough to be a problem. I mean, who wants to play a game where a bullet gets magically transported into the player, and then it's game over? No one. I've tried using NSTimer for the game loop, I've tried using a separate thread (with a frame rate and continuously) I've tried using different frame rates, from 30FPS to 60FPS (It seems to have a max frame rate around 45FPS, but no problems at 30FPS) I've tried using timeIntervalSince1970 and CFGetAbsoluteTime to measure loop time, with no noticeable diffence Anyone have any ideas on what is the best way to get this looking better? One of the posts I've read suggested running the simulation at a fixed frame rate and then just render as fast as possible, does that seem like a good idea?
