• Ubuntu 12.04.1 Setup doesn't detect Windows 7 partition

  I'm not really that of a linux pro, more of a noob. But i can handle console operations. Well, this is my system: ASUS ZenBook Prime UX31A 256 GB ADATA MX11 SSD Intel Core i5-3317U (Ivy-Bridge) I have a fresh installation of Windows 7 Ultimate (not activated) on a 90 GB NTFS Partition on my SSD, the rest is unassigned. I want to install Ubuntu 12.04.1 from an USB Stick (no CD-Drive...) created with Universal USB Installer 1.9.1.1. However I'm not givven the option 'Install alongside Windows', and when i choose 'other' it shows that 256 GB of 256 GB are unassigned (free) Memory. os-prober gave me: /dev/sda1/:Windows 7 (loader):Windows:chain I also tried: sudo dmraid -rE and: sudo apt-get remove dmraid with no success... How can I install Ubuntu alongside Windows? Thanks very much in advance!

  I know i could program it myself but maybe there is a simple (thats the keyword) package. I like to add a box, snippet, form or page to my site for users to input their email address. Then i'd like it to automatically send email saying you have successfully subscribe. I'd want an unsubscribe link and i would be using smtp on google apps. I would like to send email with html so i can have a simple sentence with a complex link such as this I dont know if i'll get marked as spam if i try to send everyone an email at once? so i'd like the software to manage it. Also i'd like to get the emails in a simple format like csv. Is there a simple app that does this? if not i can write a simple form which does a simple insert (or delete when unsubscribing) and write a 200-300line app to send my emails out for me.

• Project collision shapes to plane for 2.5D collision detection

  I am working on a top down 2.5D game. In the game anything that overlaps on the screen should be 'colliding' with each other regardless of whether they are on the same plane in the 3D world. This is illustrated below from a side-ways view: The orange and green circles are spheres floating in the 3D world. They are projected onto a plane parallel to the viewport plane (y = 0 in the image) and if they overlap there is a collision event between them. These spheres are attached to other meshes to represent the sphere bounding boxes for collisions. The way I plan to implement this at the moment is the following: Get the 3D world position at the center of the sphere. Use Camera.WorldToViewportPoint to project the point to the viewport plane. Move a Sphere Collider with the radius of the sphere to that point. Test for collisions using unity colliders. My question is how to extend this to work for rotated cuboids. For instance if I have two rotated cuboids, if I follow the logic above it would not work as intended as the cuboids may not collide but they could still be intersected on the view plane. An example is below: Is there a way to project a cuboid that would be aligned with the plane? Would it be a valid cuboid for all rotations if I did this?

• Dot Matrix printers setup...

  Hello! I am using debian which is similar to ubuntu. They have 7 dot matrix printers some very old like this one http://www.omnidatasys.net/product/desc_printer_ti880.htm which works from 1979 daily and at text is faster than many inkjects. I believe that it has his own language... Sending text to serial port (port server) prints garbage. However i think is prints only capital english up to 95 asccii and greek and the rest up to 127 i think greek capital.(special chip ) Sending english capital letters prints garbage i think but i amnt sure... i will try again... The other printer are ESC/P compatible and i use generic epson driver provided from ghostscript... However i think that sending text via lp -dpr1 filename It prints the text as a grafic...Changing from printer font face(courier,times roman etc) or pitch has no effect... I am wondering if is there any work arround for this? In AIX they claim that lp command printed output as text as it prints and cobol programs send raw text to to lp printers . However in AIX they use some custom filters for the printers and has more options for dot matrix printers.. I would like to know if there is a solution for this.. To avoid graphics mode for text and change font face somehow.. The most Straight-through approach would be to use no driver ,just send ESC/P from cobol but this requires too much work... • Triple monitor setup with an ATI Radeon 4200?

  I have a relatively new Powerspec computer (i5 quad core processor, about a year or two old) and just grabbed a new relatively inexpensive ($40?) graphics card. It has 1 DVI, one VGA, and one HDMI output. I have two (different type) monitors plugged into the DVI and VGA slots, and they work great. However, I cannot seem to be able to get a third monitor in the HDMI slot to work. I can see the monitor (and monitor info) show up in display settings. However, if I try to switch the monitor to 'on' and click apply, nothing happens. Anyone have the slightest idea what the problem might be? (It's a Radeon graphics card FYI; if I remember right I think it was the Radeon 4200?)

• Packard Bell Easynote NJ65 not saving gamma Setup.

  Hi. There seems to be a issue with the Easynote range of PB laptops. Since Ubuntu 10.10 does not use a Xorg.conf file to save your gamma / resolution /brightness setting, everytime I turn on my laptop I have to open up a terminal window and use the x-gamma command to set it up to my personal preference. Is there a way to create a configuration file which can save that into the system everytime I load up the OS? • How to make the run button run the project, not the file, in Eclipse

  I'm using the Spring IDE, a variant of Eclipse to create a Java project. One big irritation I have is that when I press the run button Eclipse tries to run the current file, which usually fails because it doesn't have a main method. I've set up run configurations in the hope that would make the play button default to the run configuration instead of the current file, but that doesn't work either. Now to run my application correctly I have to press the little arrow next to play, select my favorite run configuration and then it works, this is only two extra clicks but it's tedious, the button is small and I feel like I shouldn't have to perform these extra steps. I mean what is the point of run configurations and projects if it still tries to run a file by default? Even more preferably I wouldn't even want to touch the mouse but just press Ctrl+F11, but this has the same behavior. All above applies to debugging as well btw. So my question is this: how do I make the run and debug buttons (and their short keys) default to the project's run configuration instead of to trying (and failing) to run only the current file? Much like it is in Visual Studio and other IDEs?

  I'm running Ubuntu 12.04 with Postfix and Mailman. I want to set up DKIM. (DomainKeys Identified Mail, or DKIM is the successor to Yahoo's "DomainKeys". It incorporate's Cisco's Identified Mail). What are the steps for setting this up? Is opendkim recommended? The only reference I have is HowToForge, but I prefer to get help here (even if it is just a confirmation of the steps at that link). Actually, I think the info at HowToForge is outdated because it mentions dkim-filter instead of opendkim.

  I have been looking into Node.js, express and Nowjs and love how easy it is to have real time interactions between clients. My background is mostly from CodeIgniter MVC using PHP and MYSql. I want to re make a current web project of mine from scratch to make everything better and more real time with this newer technology. After researching and doing test examples I want to use node.js , express and Nowjs for the real time interactions once someone connects to the socket.io to pull data back to clients. But use Code Igniter for the control of the site and user management , possible shopping cart/store , pretty much everything else. This is purely due to time constraints and that I am already familiar with doing it that way. I have been looking at MongoDB as an alternative to MySql, Basically the app is going to be multiple chat rooms all on one page. with the ability of notifications and private messaging. Lots of data transfer and images. before I started piecing it together I wanted to get people who have already done something similar. My model would use Code Igniter and MySQL to render the page and then connect them onto a node.js server and broadcast using express and nowjs would using a mongoDB be better than mySQL for tons of messages and data being stored or MYSQL? Also does it make since to not make the whole site on Node.js , kinda piece it together like that? • Maximized Office 2007 gets cut off on multi-monitor setup with different resolutions

  I've got an external monitor plugged into my laptop that I like to use for typing up documents, but I've noticed that when Word is maximized it gets cut off at where the primary monitor's bounds are. Is this a bug in Wine (i'm using version 1.3.32), or with my Window Manager (metacity with compositing enabled, version 2.34.1), with my graphics drivers (nouveau) or something else? I know that I can fix it by unmaximizing (it doesn't get cut off and I can resize to the entirety of the second monitor), but it keeps on maximizing itself as it (rightly so) knows that it should be taking up the entire screen. I don't really want to use the "Emulate a virtual desktop feature", I would prefer to find the source of this issue.

  I installed ubuntu 12.04 and I added "Terminal" to the launcher bar, the default size of the terminal is a bit small, after some googling here is how I made the disaster change: At HUD menu, type "preference" and I see the option of Edit > preference, this is as I expected After I clicked the option, I forget the exact steps, but somehow I came to some configuration panel and there is a checkbox for terminal "custom" and I checked it now an input box is enabled and I type gnome-terminal --geometry 160x50 Now the problem comes, whenever I click the terminal button at the launcher bar, new terminal windows pops up endlessly from everywhere, I cannot do anything any more except logout or shutdown. The weird thing is, after I come back, I cannot get that Edit > preference any more when I type "preference" in HUD, I tried "Edit", "preference". To be clear, I still can use the computer as long as I do not click that terminal button, but I really want to use terminal to run commands. Help is appreciated greatly! Update - OK, figured out. Go to /home/jibin/.gconf/apps/gnome-terminal/profiles/Default and open that xml file, I can see the options I changed at the GUI, remove them and terminal runs good. The preference HUD is back also, it is actually Profile Preference and it is only available when terminal is open. Continue my ubuntu-ing...

  I'm trying to figure out how to build my virtual economy. It seems like some games have one currency and some of them have up to 3 and 4 different ones. The game is an action game which is currently single player but I'm planning on adding a tournament mode that allows users to compete against each other. The virtual goods that a user would be able to purchase would be either customization to the character or powerups and utilities that give the character more abilities in the game. The character is able to gain coins during game play. The advice I'm trying to get is whether or not it makes sense to set up more than one currency and more than two currencies? What are the pros and cons? Reference to some resources that indicate research would be great.

• Setup shortcut keys not working

  In my Ubuntu 12.04, in keyboard settings, I didn't find a shortcut key for restarting X, so in "Customer Shorcut", I set up Ctrl+Alt+Backspace for command sudo restart lightdm. But after that the shortcut doesn't work. Is it because it requires root privilege? Also I have a SysRq key on my keyboard, which I think to be the "Magic SysReq Key". My SysRq key is shared with PrtSc key (for screen shoot), and is in blue which means I have to press Fn key at the same time to invoke SysRq instead of PrtSC. But every time I press Fn+SysRq, it always shoots a photo of the screen, same as just hitting PrtSc i.e. without hitting Fn. I wonder how to use the Magic SysReq Key? Does it mean the shortcut has not been linked to any command that is supposed for Magic SysReq Key yet? PS: My laptop is Lenovo T400 and OS is Ubuntu 12.04. Thanks!

• Horible lag on Xubuntu media center setup

  I am setting up a media center running Xubuntu 11.10 as a media center. It is using the XFCE desktop enviroment. I have the NVIDIA drivers installed from the Additional Drivers program, and uninstalled all but the esennitial software. The computer is a Dell Dimension 3000. You can view detailed technical specifications here. The graphics card installed is a Geforce 8400 GS. I have installed all updates through Update Manager. What can I do to fix the horrible lag? It makes watching TV impossible.I have uploaded two videos of the lag, here and here. The second one does not have sound because the sound stops playing on some channels that lag a lot. The TV card is a Hauppage 950q USB, and the TV recording program is Kaffiene. Please help me with this, I am trying to do this to show how great Ubuntu is to the rest of the family.

• Suggestions to start a cross-platform project

  I have a big project in my head, it should be cross-platform (Win, Max and Linux), online (Client - Server) and with 3D graphics. I would like some suggestions to start with the right things. Currently I'm a PHP/MySQL coder, I used to code in C and Pascal on DOS ages (Borland Times ;)), my C knowlegde need a refresh but it's ok. I guess C++ it's the right language. What platform and what i should use to code? I can choose from all three platforms. My idea was to use Visual Studio 2010 C++, but i'm not sure if it support Native code. What kind of libraries should i use? I guessed OpenSSL for the login, OpenGL for graphics part. For the Audio or the GUI? Any other suggestions are well accepted. I know it's a "BIG DEAL" but I have no rush and it'll be a free-time project, only for my pleasure. Thank you in advance.

• Proper policy for user setup

  I am still fairly new to linux hosting and am currently working on some policies for our production ubuntu servers. The servers are public facing webservers with ssh access from the public network and database servers with ssh access from the internal private network. We are a small hosting company so in the past with windows servers we used one user account and one password that each of us used internally. Anyone outside of the company who needed to access the server for FTP or anything else had their own user account. Is that okay to do in the linux world, or would most people recommend using individual accounts for each person who needs to access the server?
