  • SQL Server: How to shrink FileStream files?

    For a project, I'm using a SQL Server 2008 R2. One table has a filestream column. I've made some load tests, and now the database has ~20GB used. I've empty tables, except several(configuration tables). But my database was still using a lot of space. So I used the Task -> Shrink -> Database / Files But my database is still using something like 16GB. I found that it's the filestream file is still using a lot of space. The problem is that I need to backup this database to export it on the final production server, and event if I indicate to compress the backup I got a file more than 3.5Go. Not convenient to store and upload. And I'm planning much bigger test, so I want to know how to shrink that empty space. When I'm trying: I get this exception: The properties SIZE, MAXSIZE, or FILEGROWTH cannot be specified for the FILESTREAM data file 'FileStreamFile'. (Microsoft SQL Server, Error: 5509) So what should I do? I found several topics with this error but they was about removing the filestream column.

  • SQL Server 2008: Can't connect to remote server via management studio but can telnet in fine

    Hi, I am in the process of trying to configure SQL Server 2008 to accept remote connections. I have been through all the documentation I can find and yet when I attempt to connect through management studio I get an error stating that the server could not be found. Interestingly I can connect through telnet to the remote server via the port that sql server is listening on. In the SQL Server logs I can see the connection attempt. So SQL Server is up and running and listening on the correct port - no firewall blocking it. It would appear that by default SQL Server is listening on port 50314 by default but management studio attempts to connect on port 1433.Weird. Server Management Studio = no dice. Anyone got any ideas? Server is set to allow remote connections - TCP IP is enabled, firewall is off. Thanks UPDATE FOR TO CLEAR THINGS UP A BIT We are seeing the connection attempt when we telnet in on port 50314 in the sql server logs. When we login through management studio we see it attempting connection on port 1433. There is no sign of this connection attempt in the logs.

    I have a quite complicated query which will by built up dynamically and is saved in a variable. As second part i have another normal query and i'd like to make an inner join between these both. To make it a little more easier here is a little example to illustrate my problem. For this little example i used the AdventureWorks database. Some query built up dynamically (Yes, i know here is nothing dynamic here, cause it's just an example.) I'm pretty sure the server is running (many of the other topics on this subject suggests that the services might not be running, so I kinda looked into it, but they do seem to be running). But when I try to access it through Microsoft SQL Server Management Studio it doesn't seem to be able to find them.     Hi, I want to display the Access Rights given to the Users for the particular module. I have Seven Tables such as RoleAccess, Roles, Functions, Module, SubModule, Company and Unit. RoleAccess is the Main Table. The AccessRights given will be stored in the RoleAccess Table only. RoleAccess Table has the following columns such as RoleID, CompanyID, UnitID, FunctionID, ModuleID, SubModuleID, Create, Update, Delete, Read, Approve. Here Create_f, Update_f, Delete_f, Read_f and Approve_f are flags. Company Table has two columns such as CompanyID and CompanyName. Unit Table has three columns such as UnitID, UnitName and CompanyID. Roles Table has four columns such as RoleID, RoleName, CompanyID and UnitID. Module Table has two columns such as ModuleID and ModuleName. SubModule Table has three columns such as ModuleID, SubModuleID, SubModuleName. Functions Table has five columns such as FunctionID, FunctionName, ModuleID and SubModuleID. At First, The RoleAccess Table does not contain any records. So I want to display the ModuleName, SubModuleName, FunctionName, CompanyID, RoleID, UnitID, FunctionID, ModuleID, SubModuleID, Create_f, Update_f, Delete_f, Read_f and Approve_f. If the AccessRights is assigned to the Particular RoleID means the flags in the search results will be 1 else it will be 0. I have witten one stored procedure but it displays the records based on the RoleID stored in the RoleAccess table. But I also want to display the Flags as 0 for the Roles not stored in the RoleAccess Table. I want the Stored Procedure for this. Any one please help me.

    For example, i have a column named EmployeeName. Every time a user changes/fix his name, i need to keep a count. If he changes his name twice, then count is 2. Also, i need to store the time of every change employee makes on EmployeeName e.g. if the name essentially is James and time created is 9:00 AM and then employee changes to John on 11:00 AM, i need to preserve this new time and new value as well as the previous one which is James at 9:00 AM. I hope its clear! Thank you guys...Best Answer will be chosen... If this requires a trigger, giving a sketchy pseudo-code will be very much appreciated.

    I have a parent master table that is generic enough to hold the common information of the children. Since the children were substantially different, we created separate tables for them. So I have something like this: tblMaster -------- MasterID int Name varchar(50) --Common to all children and there are a bunch of fields like this ChildType int -- Type of Child either ChildOne or ChildTwo ChildID int -- need to store ChildOneID or ChildTwoID depending on type of Child, so that i can refer to children tblChild1 -------- ChildOneID int IDENTITY tblChild2 --------- ChildTwoID int IDENTITY Should I have a ChildID in the master that is either ChildOneID or ChildTwoID based on the ChildType column? I have a number of children and I have simplified it for this question. The other way is to add ChildOneID and ChildTwoID as columns in the master, but since i have a number of columns, I will have a lot of null columns EDIT: Any help is appreciated

    Hi, We have a Windows 2008 cluster with several SQL 2008 instance. We would like to run a script that modifies 4 registry keys prior to the startup of SQL. I do not know if there is a way to have a script run through Windows 2008 clustering that does that. I have a VBS script to do it and tried to add a Generic Script to an existing cluster group, but it failed saying it could not be registered. Any ideas?

    I have a table which has approximately sixty tables, and other tables are added constantly. Each table is a part of a schema. A such quantity of tables makes it difficult to use Microsoft SQL Server Management Studio 2008. For example, I must scroll up in object explorer to access database related functions, or scroll down each time I need to access Views or Security features. Is it possible to group several tables to be able to expand or collapse them in Object Explorer? Maybe a folder may be displayed for each schema, letting collapse the folders I don't need to use?

    I am trying to add a domain user. I am doing the following. Expand Security Right click on Logins Select New Login... Login name select search Click on location and select entire directory Type username Click checkname The name goes underlined and add some more info Click OK Click OK I then get the following error: I have found http://support.microsoft.com/kb/324321. The Login does exist There is no Duplicate security identifiers Authentication failure I don't think is happening as I can browse AD Case sensitivity should not be the problem as I am doing the checkname and it is correcting it. Not a Local account Name resolution again I can see the AD I have rebooted the server (VM) and the issue is still happening. Any ideas?   • Community Day at SOS Kinderdorf Bambous

    Easter is not only an occassion of public holidays but an opportunity to share and celebrate with your neighborhood. The team of IOS Indian Ocean Software Ltd. spent Easter Monday with the children and "mothers" of SOS Children's Village in Bambous. Together with the employees' family members we enjoyed some wonderful hours together. Starting the community day with a common lunch, IOS contributed mainly stationery, educational gifts and games like Scrabble or Sudoku. And of course, a little give-away with chocolate eggs... The kids are aged between 5 and 18 years. They live together with their village mothers in so-called family houses. The SOS Kinderdorf in Bambous is quite new and started their operations back in 2003, with an official inauguration in May 2005. Actually, I'm really happy about this event and I am looking forward to IOS next community activity.
