• Is there a way to get Adobe Acrobat Professional on Mac OS X to stop asking to be the default PDF vi

  Every time I open Acrobat on OS X 10.5, Acrobat asks to be the default PDF viewer, with no option to "remember this choice" or "not ask again" etc., and I can't find anything in the preferences either to disable asking, but it's quite rude as I have made it perfectly clear that I prefer Preview to open my PDFs!

  When I open an iCal invitation (Mail Attachment.ics file) in Mac Mail.app sent to me from someone using Thunderbird, I receive the following error: The only solution that I've found to date is to save the Mail Attachment.ics file somewhere like the Desktop, open it in a text editor, and delete the blank lines at the beginning and end of the file. This problem appears to only happen when I'm receiving invitations from people using Thunderbird under Windows. Does anyone know of a better way to solve this problem? Is this a bug in Apple iCal, or is Thunderbird not meeting the iCal spec? • Is there a way to avoid Wacom Control Panel to stop showing in certain cases ?

  This is the problem: Suddenly, you double click on desktop wacom tablet settings icon, and it wont show the dialog. It appears to be loaded as it's shown down in the windows taskbar. I suspect is caused by change of resolution or some setting, maybe suddenly it sets the origin of the panel dialog at some 3000 thosand pixels to the right or something. I have digged that wacom_tablet.dat file to see if I fix it changing some value there, but looks like a log, a history, more than a ini for settings... And anyway does not solve it. My solution is having always a very complete settings file done and backed up to restore (with wacom utility for this, which in previous driver versions did not exist) when this happens, but is counter productive: You change the settings even per each project(and software) needs. I have seen it happenning with Cintiq 12", intuos4 A6, Graphires, Intuos 1. Is just me, doing something weird every time? I doubt it, is normal use, I am amazed that seems no one else had this prob(or nobody asked), happens often with typical use. Maybe is because am setting a shortcut in the desktop? Weird as it works perfect till some random moment... (Have digged Wacom's forums and FAQs, then here, but nothing related to it... Neither in "related questions".) The thing happens in Win XP, 7, etc. Done so during years in my experience, and several times at work, which is worse.

  Machine: Xen-3.0 image running stable Debian Linux 2.6.18, pretty vanilla. My VPS provider asks me to deal with some trouble my image is causing, namely handling IP addresses it is not supposed to: The problem is that your server seems to be configured to use IPs that have not been appointed to you. Your server responds to ARP requests for the IPs 81.171.111.219 and 81.171.111.218. But you are not allowed to use those. Not explicitly, as far as I can tell! At least, nothing under /etc or /var/tmp mentions these IP addresses. But arp -v says something I can't make sense of: Address HWtype HWaddress Flags Mask Iface 81.171.111.1 ether 00:0C:DB:E3:80:00 C eth0 Entries: 1 Skipped: 0 Found: 1 What is it listening to? The possibilities seem to be: It's not my fault: my VPS providers have overlooked something. What might that be? 81.171.111.1 means I'm happy listening in on ARP requests that I shouldn't be: how do I change this? In any case, what does this mean? I'm looking in completely the wrong place for information on what my image is doing. Where should I be looking?

• How to make IIS7 stop adding etag to response headers?

  For performance reasons, I'm using expire headers for static files (adding long expiration periods like 50 years or so). Now I'm trying to get rid of etag headers which are automatically added by IIS7. I've done some searching but it seems harder than what I thought (there doesn't seem to be a straight forward way). I found some workarounds but they all use httpmodules (which I'm keeping as a last resort). I strongly prefer to not get the etag header added in the first place. Did anyone manage to do this? • What could cause Citrix Xenapp to stop streaming applications after the server's IP address changed?

  We have a Citrix XenApp 5.0 server running on Windows 2008, and today we moved ISPs so our IP addresses changed. The IP addresses have propagated, the XenApp server is running, and internally we can connect to the server, choose an app, and have it streamed without issue. Externally we are only able to authenticate to the server and choose an app, but the app never launches in the client. I'm guessing there's a hand-off between the part of XenApp that authenticates a user and shows what apps they can launch, and the part that does the app streaming, and that second part is hard-coded to use an the old ip address. Any ideas why this could be happening?

• How to stop Apache from crashing my entire server?

  I maintain a Gentoo server with a few services, including Apache. It's fairly low-end (2GB of RAM and a low-end CPU with 2 cores). My problem is that, despite my best efforts, an over-loaded Apache crashes the entire server. In fact, at this point I'm close to being convinced that Linux is a horrible operating system that isn't worth anyone's time looking for stability under load. Things I tried: Adjusting oom_adj for the root Apache process (and thus all its children). That had close to no effect. When Apache was overloaded it would bring the system to a grind, as the system paged out everything else before it got to kill anything. Turning off swap. Didn't help, it would unload memory paged to binaries of processes and other files on /, thus causing the same effect. Putting it in a memory-limited cgroup (limited to 512 MB of RAM, 1/4th of the total). This "worked", at least in my own stress tests - except the server keeps crashing under load (basically stalling all other processes, inaccessible via SSH, etc.) Running it with idle I/O priority. This wasn't a very good idea in the end, because it just caused the system load to climb indefinitely (into the thousands) with almost no visible effect - until you tried to access an unbuffered part of the disk. This caused the task to freeze. (So much for good I/O scheduling, eh?) Limiting the number of concurrent connections to Apache. Setting the number too low caused web sites to become unresponsive due to most slots being occupied with long requests (file downloads). I tried various Apache MPMs without much success (prefork, event, itk). Switching from prefork/event+php-cgi+suphp to itk+mod_php. This improved performance, but didn't solve the actual problem. Switching I/O schedulers (cfq to deadline). Just to stress this out: I don't care if Apache itself goes down under load, I just want the rest of my system to remain stable. Of course, having Apache recover quickly after a brief period of intensive load would be great to have, but one step at a time. Right now I am mostly dumbfounded by how can humanity, in this day and age, design an operating system where such a seemingly simple task (don't allow one system component to crash the entire system) seems practically impossible - or at least, very hard to do. Please don't suggest things like VMs or "BUY MORE RAM". Some more information gathered with a friend's help: The processes hang when the cgroup oom killer is invoked.   On a multi-monitor system, if I'm viewing a full-screen video in Flash on one monitor, clicking the mouse on the other monitor causes Flash to leave full-screen mode and revert to normal size. What's the easiest way of preventing this that works on my version of Flash? My system is Flash 10 (10.0.12.36), in Firefox 3.5 on Windows Vista 64, but I think it affects all current versions. This is very annoying behaviour, but unfortunately, according to this bug report response it seem to be a security feature, rather than a bug: We understand that many users would like fullscreen on one monitor and to be able to interact with your OS on another monitor. However, due to security requirements, we require that Flash and Browser must be the current focus of your OS.

  Whenever my GTS 250 enters its power save mode, downscaling its frequencies, my audio stutters. This affects both my onboard audio and my Audigy Soundblaster 2 ZS. Changing Windows power save mode options such as PCI-E link state power management or Power Management Mode in the nVidia control panel have no effect on this issue. Replacing the power supply had no effect on this issue. The BIOS is the latest version, and I have the latest motherboard chipset and graphics drivers installed. I do not overclock. I started to see this issue after I upgraded my rig from its Socket 939 board to a Socket 1156 board with a Core i5-750 while simultaneously upgrading from Vista to 7.

• How do I stop postfix from handling my mail?

  Here's the situation: I have a domain, let's say domain.com. That domain has Google Apps for Business enabled, so all mail delivered to @domain.com will end up at Google (MX records point to Google). I have a PHP script at domain.com that I use to send mail to myself. But when the PHP script tries to send mail to [email protected], Postfix at that server decides that the recipient is a local user (because the address matches the domain Postfix itself is at), and tries to deliver the mail locally. But inevitably fails as the mailbox cannot be found. How can I instruct Postfix to not try to handle locally any emails to @domain.com and just send them forward so Google can pick them up? I have already removed $myhostname from mydestination field in Postfix's main.cf file, and I have restarted Postfix but Postfix still tries to deliver the mail locally.   I have a Samsung G3 Station 2TB external hard drive (link to PDF specs here). It was working perfectly when I accidentally plugged it in my notebook's power source. The notebook's power source is 19V/3.42A. The hard drive's is 12V/2A and I know that, inside its case, there is regular 2TB SATA drive, along with some sort of adapter. Does this adapter has some kind of power protection? I opened the case and the hard drive board smells bad. Does my data is forever lost or can I replace its board?

• How do I stop panning on a monitor that supports a specific resolution?

  Hi all, I've been battling this for a few days now. Any and all help is appreciated. I have a planar monitor with a native res of 1280x1024. At one point, I had used PowerStrip to override "something" and set the res to 1600x1200, and it worked great. I then installed new intel graphics drivers for my 86895g (or w/e model) video card, which screwed up whatever settings I had. If I set it to 1600x1200 this time, it would set the res correctly, but give me a 1280x1024 viewport and the screen would pan when the mouse got to the edges of the screen. Absolutely not useful. Ok, so I was limited to 1280x1024 now. W/e. Now...enter new video card with two video ports. I have two monitors now and the latest nVidia drivers. I decide to try to get dual 1600x1200 going...ended up screwing the original monitor up so much now that it's at 1280x1024, with a 1024x768 viewport and panning! Absolutely not usable now. So what I need, and I can't seem to find on any forums, is help doing one or more of the following: Clearing out all monitor/edid info out of the windows registry without corrupting the registry. Actually correctly override the EDID values and get my sweet res back. Some other way of getting back to at least dual 1280x1024 with NO panning. Note: My device manager shows 4 monitors for some reason. My registry shows entries for all sorts of monitors that have been hooked up to the machine over the years. It's making it difficult to debug. Experience with PowerStrip would be helpful. I've been mucking with Phoenix EDID designer and MonInfo as well, but I'm stumbling around in the dark with these. • How can I stop IIS7 (integrated mode) from reporting a 404 before I get a chance to handle it?

  I have an ASP.NET MVC 2 application running on IIS7 in integrated mode. I'm trying to do my own 404 handling, but IIS7 seems to be intercepting the error and returning its own 404 message to the client before I get a chance to handle it. I'm not having much luck coming at the problem from a programming perspective over on Stack Overflow, so I wondered if maybe it's a configuration problem. Is there something I have to do to tell IIS to let me handle my own errors? (I'm trying to use Application_Error in my global.asax but it's not even getting there). There is a custom error page defined (at the machine level, I think) for 404 but when I tried removing that it didn't really help - it simply showed a bald one-liner message instead. My code still didn't get a look in. Is it perhaps something to do with the routing? Maybe the "mysite.com/nosuchpage" URL isn't being routed to me and that's why I don't get a chance to intercept it? Do I need to do something so that ALL requests get routed through my app?

  After using the wireless keyboard that comes with the iMac, I have switched to a MS Ergo Natural 4000 one. Surprisingly I had to install extra software as OS X could not work out which keyboard I had. After which I went into sys prefs and set the main input method to be "British - Microsoft" first and "Swiss German" second (what the wireless keyboard is), on the "input sources" tab: However... OS X keeps resetting my input method back to Swiss German which is driving me bananas. I have the flag thingy top right so I can see when this changes. N.B. I have "input source options" set to "use the same one in all documents" which I am assuming means keep the language the same for anything running. It also flips back on the login page. Does anyone know how to fix this?

• Why do all my sites randomly stop in iis?

  I have a GoDaddy Account with a virtual hosting environment. For some reason every few weeks, all of our sites (both websites and FTP sites) are stopped. I restart them and they start normally, but I would like to prevent this from happening in the future. It is an iis thing. When you open up iis you can see that each of the sites has been stopped in iis. Also, I have tried looking at the event viewer and I don't see anything, but I am not sure what I am looking for.

• Why would one of my servers stop being able to access other servers by FQDN?

  I have a number of servers on our local network and our debian server has suddenly stopped being able to access the other servers via their FQDN. Initial symptom was inability to login with Active Directory accounts. On further inspection, this machine, porkbelly, was unable to access our other servers (e.g. bacon and albert) via their FQDN. That is, they can ping albert by running ping albert but not by running ping albert.domain.local though when running ping albert it will be expanded to albert.domain.local. The server is still accessible from other servers via both porkbelly and porkbelly.domain.local. Upon examination of hosts information and running hostname its hostname and FQDN are correct. The resolv.conf appears correct. It contains: domain domain.local search domain.local nameserver 192.168.0.xxx (the nameserver) The dns server is also our Windows AD server. I'm not even sure where to go from here or why dns seems to be partially working though I don't have much experience. Where should I go from here? What might be causing this issue where machines are visible via their hostname but not their FQDN?

• When did Apple stop using the name "Macintosh" in favor of "Mac", and does anyone know why?

  As of a few months ago I finally joined the ranks of Macintosh owners. Except "Macintosh" doesn't seem to exist anymore for some reason. I noticed everything was "Mac", i.e. Mac OS X, MacBook, Mac mini, Mac Pro, etc. I didn't pay a whole lot of attention, but I always thought everyone was using shorthand. I mean "MacBook" is the real name of the computer, as is "iMac", but I always thought when people said "Mac Pro" they were just shortening the real name, "Macintosh Pro". And yet now when you go to the Apple site, a search for "Macintosh" turns up several instances of the name being used on various things (system requirements for old versions of QuickTime, the occasional piece of software with "for the Macintosh" in the name) but nothing from the main Mac pages. Near as I can tell they're really no longer called "Macintoshes" they're just "Macs" When did this happen, and does anyone know why Apple ditched the term "Macintosh"?

And why is it getting told to wake up? • Why does my Belkin Play router regularly stop working for a few minutes at a time?

  I recently purchased a Belking Play dual-band router for my home. About every few hours, the router stops working or "cuts out" for several minutes before coming back online automatically. My old one did this as well. I figured out a main problem was my wireless home phone, which sends a 2.4GHz signal. Anytime someone would call the phone, my router would get interrupted. Therefore, I unplugged this phone and got a wired phone. Unfortunately, my wired phone has the same problem. Therefore, I unplugged the wired phone. Unfortunately, my router still has regular issues. I live in a home with neighbors within close proximity to me, so it might be possible that their devices are the ones causing me problems. How can I determine what is causing my router problems? I thought that the point of a dual-band router was that if a signal was interfering on one band then it would be uninterrupted on another. However, it seems that is not the case. Does anyone have any tips on how to troubleshoot this or any knowledge you can share to properly set my expectations?
