• Windows xp - recover document opened directly from IE

  Hi Attempting to help a family member recover a document. The word 2007 document was downloaded and opened directly from a webmail interface using Internet Explorer running on Windows XP. The user saved the document multiple times while working on it for the good part of a day. After closing Word 2007 the user is not able to locate the document, and I have so far not been able to help. The computer has not been turned off, and the user has not attempted to open the document directly from the mail again. Recreating the events on vista/windows 7 its easy enough to locate the document under the Temporary Internet Files folder. I have however not been able to do the same on a Windows XP. Any suggestion for how to locate this document, or if its even possible? Thanks

• SATA Devices not showing up when in UEFI mode

  I'm trying to install Windows and the bios should be set to UEFI mode. The problem is that all SATA devices aren't showing up (shows as if there aren't any) so I can't boot from the installation CD (it's just not there). The weird thing is that when set to LEGACY mode they all show up.. SATA mode is set to AHCI and I'm on Lenovo Y510P. I have a Linux OS installed that is accessible only when BIOS is in LEGACY mode (otherwise the hard drive it's on is not available) I also tried reseting the BIOS settings which didn't help.. • Change MacOS X guest screen resolution for VirtualBox

  I have tried all alternatives and resources that I found on internet to achieve to change screen resolution in my MacOS X guest. I have the latest VirtualBox version (4.1.22) and I have MacOS X 10.6.3 Snow Leopard running in a vm guest. • Backing up an rsnapshot directory to a remote device

  I have a local backup server that uses rsnapshot with hard links that contains about 10TBs of information which add about 4 to 5GBs per day. It's works great. I've been requested to set up and maintain a remote backup of the local rsnapshot directory structure. It's a nightly backup. I've tried using rsync with encryption which takes forever and eats system resources. A previous post says not to use rsync with hard links for that reason. I need a suggestion of how I can keep the local and remote copies of the rsnapshot structures in sync? Thanks

• ionice idle is ignored

  I have been testing the ionice command for a while and the idle (3) mode seems to be ignored in most cases. My test is to run both command at the same time: du <big folder> ionice -c 3 du <another big folder> If I check both process in iotop I see no difference in the percentage of io utilization for each process. To provide more information about the CFQ scheduler I'm using a 3.5.0 linux kernel. I started doing this test because I'm experimenting a system lag each time a daily cron job updatedb.mlocate is executed in my Ubuntu 12.10 machine. If you check the /etc/cron.daily/mlocate file you realize that the command is executed like: /usr/bin/ionice -c3 /usr/bin/updatedb.mlocate Also, the funny thing is that whenever my system for some reason starts using swap memory, the updatedb.mlocate io process is been scheduled faster than kswapd0 process, and then my system gets stuck.   TrueCrypt - "Warning! Password locked: Fixed disk0" error message on boot. When i start my laptop (Acer TravelMate 2410). after the starting memory check, the screen goes full black, and a message appears for about 3 seconds: Warning! Password locked: Fixed disk0 and after that, disappears, and next message comes out: Operating System Not Found and all stops here. Windows Xp was installed on it, before this came. TrueCrypt cd (witch was made during the process of full encryption) is not working, not in restoring MBR, no even in decrypting my drive - completely useless. Note: I detected some short of boot sector errors (i dont know the amount) on my drive before this happened. Please, i would greatfully thank every comment, or suggestion, because my computer is unusable now. The HDD is a Samsung HDD, 160Gb. Other preferences: Acer TravelMate 2410 Notebook, 2 Gb RAM, 1500 Mhz Intel Celeron M processor. Regards

It a muti author site where people are engaged in writing posts, comments, updating status etc. According to Google Analytics this month traffic Visitor = 45,764 Pageview = 1,051,186 Visit = 141,447 I have cdn my site, compress the css, used w3 Total cache plugin to optimize my site. Since last month I am getting several down notice from Pingdom. Right now I am facing more down alert than before. And have to restart my site several time to up again. Is my hosting resource is not enough? Do I need more resource? or what could be the solution? Helpful suggestion will be appreciated. Thanks.

• Spambot Infection Detection

  My server has been blocked by CBL for participating in curtwail spambot. Initially we suspected that it was coming from a PC and not from the server, but the router is blocking all packets on 25 except those coming from the server. I have just executed the tcpdump command and every 5 minutes I see a flurry of activity on port 25 that is very suspicious and I am sure that there is some process running on the server: 13:02:30.027436 IP exprod5og110.obsmtp.com.53803 > ubuntu.local.smtp: Flags [S], seq 171708781, win 5744, options [mss 1436,sackOK,TS val 3046699707 ecr 0,nop,wscale 2], length 0 I have stopped postfix, and yet there is still traffic on port 25 above. But how can I find what process is actually communicating on port 25 as it only rund for a few seconds and so for example lsof -i :25 will never catch it. I have been working on this now for 2 days, it is a live server and I cannot simply shut it down, any suggestion on how I can detect the source of this email bot process ?

• Problems setting Hyper-V permissions

  I am using a Windows 2012 Hyper-V server to host some test PCs. Our support personnel should be able to take snapshots of these machines and roll a test machine back to a specific snapshot, but they should not have any other permissions. I have followed the directions in this article and, on suggestion of another article have added the specific AD group to the local Hyper-V Administrators group, but whenever one of them attempts to connect to the server to take a snapshot, they get an error stating that they do not have permission to connect to that server. I'm sure I'm missing something, but at this point I'm at a loss as to what that would be. Can anyone tell me how to properly set these permissions? edit: Per request I am attaching a screenshot of the permissions I have set for this group.

  Most people use their SSD as their primary system installation disk with Windows 7. W7 already has a lot of optimizations for SSDs, both in terms of performance and lifetime. Minimizing writes increases the lifetime of SSDs, so post each suggestion as an answer and let others vote on them. Update: I'm not sure anymore that minimizing writes is a good thing [tm], hard facts that SSDs will degrade within a noticeable time are missing and it seems this it can create a bit FUD about the functionality of the SSD. In other words: I question the usefulness of my wiki question.

However, if users try to create a new word document from a template when they are connected to VPN outside of the office, it takes nearly 20 minutes to create a word file which is not reasonable at all. • Firefox: show bookmarks location in search result

  I've been a user of firefox for years. Like most, I collected a large number of bookmarks, and over time it now contins lots of folders and nested folders... When I add a new bookmark, I would like to place in specific folder as other related ones. The thing is when I use the search functionality in the Bookmarks Library, it does not say what folder each item is in. And I end up manually looking through all folders (very tedious!) Any suggestion on how to do more efficiently?

• Can't decide on a new distro

  I've had Ubuntu (9.10) on my netbook in the past and I really liked it. I'm currently running Fedora and feeling like I should "change it up" again. I've played around with Ubuntu 10.04 Lucid a little, and so far I'm very impressed. I've always wanted to try Arch, but I'm worried I won't have the driver support I need for all the non-standard hardware in a netbook. Does anybody have a suggestion for a new distro to try? I'm preferably looking for something feature-rich over light-weight, and something that I can have up and running with a minimum of configuration (at least partially working). Thanks!

  Is there a stable way of accessing Google Docs (application) from my desktop without having to use a browser on Windows? On my accepted answer... While I did stipulate that I wanted to not use my browser, I didn't really mean I wanted to avoid browser technology. I meant I didn't want to open my browser, type in the web address for google docs, etc. TheTXI's answer required me to download/install nothing more than what I already had (Chrome) to acheive this. It created a desktop icon (similar to an application) that launches me right into my docs (similar to an application), without extra browser-items on the screen. This was an excellent suggestion, and won by virtue of parsimony.

• Managing Windows 7 Workstations

  There was a similar thread to this a few years back, but without any solutions. Just wondering if things have moved on since then. I'm primarily an Mac admin working in a college, but I have recently taken over responsibility for about 30 student workstations running Windows 7. For the Macs I have Apple Remote Desktop, where I can logon to machines in a session,check for any nefarious student activity and if necessary, log off or lock users out of machines. Could anyone give me a suggestion for an equivalent Windows system manager where I can do these tasks - e.g. not just a vnc client but one with more management options?

• Windows Vista Home memory usage problem [closed]

  Hi, I have a Windows Vista Home laptop from a client that is running on 1GB ram. The laptop is used for super basic things, word, internet, outlook, etc. What makes zero sense is that the RAM is being completely consumed, causing the PC to hang sometimes when it can't take it anymore. However, in task manager, the processes appear to only be consuming maybe 100MB (Private Working Set). The client literally has a simple setup, and is running kaspersky, though that does not seem to be indicating it is the cause of the excessive memory usage. Does anyone have a suggestion on how to resolve the memory issue or how to track down what is actually happening and fix it? G

• Why does Ubuntu 10.04 not see my hard drives?

  I am trying to install Ubuntu Desktop 10.04 64bit to a new machine. mobo = gigabyte x58a-ud3r cpu = i7 930 ssd = Kingston 64GB V+ hhd = wd 1tb black When the installation gets to the prepare partions step, no partitions are listed. Drives are recognized by BIOS and WinXP setup sees them. I have also tried Ubuntu 9.10. It does not see the drives also. Just searching around I found a suggestion to select "no dmraid" in additional options screen. This did not seem to help. Any ideas?

• iTunes high CPU usage

  I upgraded to iTunes 10.4.1 and use Windows 7 and my itunes library is not that large at all (say about 20gb) When I start iTunes the CPU goes between 60-80% and stays there for a long time. I see that the itunes.exe takes about 70% of CPU in Process Explorer and it spawns a SearchProtocolHost.exe every 2 mins or so which takes < 0.1% CPU. Other than that iTunes.exe is always at 70-90% and never lets me do anything else. Does someone have a suggestion? EDIT: I have tried reinstalling 10.4.1 completely deleting my library and starting with a plain installation and that does not work I have tried downgrading to 10.3.x and that does not work either :(

• De-duplicate Firefox bookmarks

  What methods exist to de-duplicate Firefox bookmarks. As I search Google I find that there previously was a plugin called CheckPlaces, but that no longer seems to exist. Another popular suggestion seems to be AM-DeadLink, which I tried, but it completely trashed my bookmarks. (Fortunately I had a backup first, and yes I had closed Firefox first as instructed). I was trying to move all my youtube.com bookmarks into a folder. I tried doing a search, and then dragging the bookmarks into the folder. Apparently this creates a copy, instead of moving them as I expected. So now I have 3 of everything since I had tried a couple times.

• Apache HTTP Not Working When SSL Enabled

  I've got a very bizarre problem in that after enabling SSL support in Apache I'm only able to access my site via SSL and not through http as well. I can confirm that Apache is definitely listening on both ports 80 and 443 (accdording to netstat). Additionally the Apache access logs are showing the requests - it's just that going in through http results in a timeout and I'm never actually able to reach the content. Like I said going through https works. Here is my httpd.conf: http://pastebin.com/kG2dPjJ2 and here is my httpd-ssl.conf: http://pastebin.com/thqvjgGJ Can anyone spot any issues with those configurations? or Have any suggestion at all? I've searched and searched but there appear to be very few people who have experienced the same. Also worth mentioning that I did a comparision between those configurations and those of a working set up and I couldn't spot anything.

• Inbox should not contain any calendar appointment

  Imagine two users A and B.User B has editor rights on mailbox A via delegation. Delegation settings: User A should not receive any invitation (calendar appointments). All should be routed to user B. It works fine when you are connected to mailbox via Outlook. Problem is that sometimes it does not work when user is connected via his iPhone (he receives calendar appointments in inbox). I know that this feature for MS products and therefore it works on MS Outlook. But user A told me that it worked in the past also on iPhone with user C. Problem is that nowadays it does not work perfectly for user B. Do you have any suggestion please? Thank you in advance.
