  I'm using Xcode 2.5 on Mac 10.4.11 PPC. javac -version returns 1.5.x yet when I imported my source code and tried to build it in Xcode, I get errors all over because generics, annotations, and for-each loops are not supported in -source 1.3. I thought I found the setting to change the source version in Xcode in the above but it doesn't work. Any ideas?

  I searched a lot in SO and other websites for a version control system that can be installed on a shared windows hosting that lets me create repositories for putting my project files on it and supply me with version control facilities but I did not find one. I looked to see whether I can install git, Mercurial or TFS in a shared hosting and I did not found any answer. I want to know if you know any system that can be installed on a shared windows hosting and please tell your recommendations if you have had an experience before.

  On my work machine, I do not have the permissions to install anything, and astoundingly, there are not any version control software packages set up. I am using VS2008, and was hoping to work around depending on SourceSafe. I've talked to the network admin, and all I could get was "We don't have any version control set up." Are there any good ways of going about this, or do I have to just bite the bullet?

• How to structure git repositories for project?

  I'm working on a content synchronisation module for Drupal. There is a server module, which sits on ona website and exposes content via a web service. There is a also a client module, which sits on a different site and fetches and imports the content at regular intervals. The server is created on Drupal 6. The client is created on Drupal 7. There is going to be a need for a Druapl 7 version of the server. And then there will be a need for a Drupal 8 version of both the client and the server once it is released next year. I'm fairly new to git and source control, so I was wondering what is the best way to setup the git repositories? Would it be a case of having a separate repository for each instance, i.e: Drupal 6 server = 1 repository Drupal 6 client = 1 repository Drupal 7 server = 1 repository Drupal 7 client = 1 repository etc Or would it make more sense to have one repository for the server and another for the client then create branches for each Drupal version? Currently I have 2 repositories - one for the client and another for the server.

• Best practices in versioning

  I develop some scripts for data analysis in a small team. For the moment we use SVN, but not in a very structured way. We haven't even looked how to use branches even though we need this functionality. What do you suggest as the best practice to setup the following system: two code bases (core and plugins) versions can be incompatible to previous scripts sometimes individual features are being developed and not yet finished, while other fixes have to be done urgently to the code In the end we don't deliver the code as a package, but rather place the Python scripts in some directory (with version names?). Some other python script which serves as a configuration choses the desired version, sets the path to these libraries and then starts to import the modules. I saw stable releases to be named "trunk" so I did the same. However, no version numbers yet. Core and plugins are different repositories, however we have to match versions for compatibility. Can you suggest some best practices or reference to ease development and reduce chaos? :) Some suggested GIT. I haven't heard about it, but I'm free to change.

• I'm a Subversion geek, why should I consider or not consider Mercurial or Git or any other DVCS?

  I try to understand the benefits of distributed version control system (DVCS). I found Subversion Re-education and this article by Martin Fowler very useful. Mercurial and others DVCS promote a new way of working on code with changesets and local commits. It prevents from merging hell and other collaboration issues We are not affected by this as I practice continuous integration and working alone in a private branch is not an option, unless we are experimenting. We use a branch for every major version, in which we fix bugs merged from the trunk. Mercurial allows you to have lieutenants I understand this can be useful for very large projects like Linux, but I don't see the value in small and highly collaborative teams (5 to 7 people). Mercurial is faster, takes less disk space and full local copy allows faster logs & diffs operations. I'm not concerned by this either, as I didn't notice speed or space problems with SVN even with very large projects I'm working on. I'm seeking for your personal experiences and/or opinions from former SVN geeks. Especially regarding the changesets concept and overall performance boost you measured. UPDATE (12th Jan): I'm now convinced that it worth a try. UPDATE (12th Jun): I kissed Mercurial and I liked it. The taste of his cherry local commits. I kissed Mercurial just to try it. I hope my SVN Server don't mind it. It felt so wrong. It felt so right. Don't mean I'm in love tonight. FINAL UPDATE (29th Jul): I had the privilege to review Eric Sink's next book called Version Control by Example. He finished to convince me. I'll go for Mercurial.

• VCS for single user using file sync service

  I'm trying to setup a version control for my one man project. My project files are in sync thanks to live mesh (but I could be using dropbox for that matter), between my laptop, my home pc and my office pc. I'm now using Netbeans with local file history. Sometimes it helps to revert to a previous state of one file. But imagine a situation when multiple files have problems. Correct me if I'm wrong but I would have to go to every file and revert to previous "safe" state. I don't like this approach, so I'm considering using a version control between SVN and GIT. I have some previous experience with SVN (TortoiseSVN) and I know that I can create a file:// repo. So, what a want to do is setup a VCS inside my synced folder just to have the ability to "revert" to a previous version if something goes wrong. Since everything's been synced to all computers, I wouldn't ever need to run an update. The file tree organization would be the following: C:...\SyncedFolder\MyProject\ Inside MyProject folder are all the project files plus a directory that has SVN or GIT info of my project (the repo/master). What VCS is best for this situation: SVN or GIT? Does SVN need to store all files from HEAD revision, thus "duplicating" all my project inside my synced folder? Does GIT eliminates this problem? Is this the best approach?

• Installed SQL Server 2008 and now TFS is broken.

  Hi, My W2K3 server was running TFS 2008 SP1, SQL Server 2005 Development edition. I installed SQL Server 2008 Standard. I installed it while leaving SQL Server 2005 alone. Upgrading was not possible due to the differences in editions of the SQL Servers. Now TFS is broken. • Upgrade Debian to unstable on VirtualBox: udev problem

  I'm running Debian stable on VirtualBox on Windows Vista 64-bit Ultimate. It's been running great, but I needed some newer packages, so I put sid in my sources.list to upgrade to unstable (as I've done a dozen times on various Linux boxes over the years). When I upgraded, something went screwy and it asked me to run apt-get -f install to fix them, which gave this: (Reading database ... 77846 files and directories currently installed.) Preparing to replace udev 0.125-7+lenny3 (using .../archives/udev_151-3_amd64.deb) ... Since release 150, udev requires that support for the CONFIG_SYSFS_DEPRECATED feature is disabled in the running kernel. Please upgrade your kernel before or while upgrading udev. AT YOUR OWN RISK, you can force the installation of this version of udev WHICH DOES NOT WORK WITH YOUR RUNNING KERNEL AND WILL BREAK YOUR SYSTEM AT THE NEXT REBOOT by creating the /etc/udev/kernel-upgrade file. • Shoretel Upgrade Path

  I currently have a Shoretel Server running Server 2003 x32 as a virtual machine paired with a ShoreGear 90 switch and another unused switch of the same model being reserved for manual failover. I am getting the software mailed to me from my partner, but with limited support since the server is in a relatively remote area. I am tempted to upgrade the OS at the same time as performing the upgrade, but want to know if there are any horror stories or advice I should know about before diving in. I'm upgrading from Shoretel 9.2 Build. I will be upgrading first to version 10.1 then finally to 11.1. The system has been bullet proof since it was installed and we are upgrading mainly to get a client that is a little more modern. My question boils down to: Should I even bother with an OS upgrade or even possibly a fresh install of Windows with an install of Shoretel 11.1 and just transfer the configuration? Should I just stay with Server 2003 since it is supported in my target version of Shoretel and the upgrade will be more than enough to keep me busy as a novice?

  The value of UPK during an upgrade is a hot topic and was a primary focus during our latest customer roundtable featuring The City and County of San Francisco: Leveraging UPK to Accelerate Your PeopleSoft Upgrade. As the Change Management Analyst for their PeopleSoft 9.0 HCM project (Project eMerge), Jan Crosbie-Taylor provided a unique perspective on how they're utilizing UPK and UPK pre-built content early on to successfully manage change for thousands of city and county employees and retirees as they move to this new release. With the first phase of the project going live next September, it's important to the City and County of San Francisco to 1) ensure that the various constituents are brought along with the project team, and 2) focus on the end user aspects of the implementation, including training. Here are some highlights on how UPK and UPK pre-built content are helping them accomplish this: As a former documentation manager, Jan really appreciates the power of UPK as a single source content creation tool. It saves them time by streamlining the documentation creation process, enabling them to record content once, then repurpose it multiple times. With regard to change management, UPK has enabled them to educate the project team and gain critical buy in and support by familiarizing users with the application early on through User Experience Workshops and by promoting UPK at meetings whenever possible. UPK has helped create awareness for the project, making the project real to users. Post go-live, they will deploy the same UPK content to provide just-in-time, in-application support for the entire system via the PeopleSoft Help menu and their PeopleSoft Enterprise Portal. Users will already be comfortable with UPK as a source of help, having been exposed to it during classroom training. They are also using UPK for a non-Oracle application called JobAps, an online job application solution used by many government organizations. • Stuck on preserving config file in WIX major upgrade!

  ARGH! Wix is driving me crazy. So, of course I have seen the many posts both here on stackoverflow and elsewhere about WiX and major upgrades. I inherited this software project using WiX and am releasing a new version. I need this new version to leave ONLY the one configuration file if it's present, and replace everything else. This installer works EXCEPT no matter what I have done so far, the new XML file replaces the old on every install. Even attempting to use NeverOverwrite="yes" and even trying and messing back and forth with OnlyDetect="no"! I am simply stuck and humbly request a little guidance. The file that needs to be preserved is called SETTINGS.XML and is in the All Users-ApplicationData directory. • What version control system is best designed to *prevent* concurrent editing?

  We've been using CVS (with TortoiseCVS interface) for years for both source control and wide-ranging document control (including binaries such as Word, Excel, Framemaker, test data, simulation results, etc.). Unlike typical version control systems, 99% of the time we want to prevent concurrent editing - when a user starts editing a file, the pre-edit version of the file becomes read only to everyone else. Many of the people who will be using this are not programmers or even that computer savvy, so we're also looking for a system that let's people simply add documents to the repository, check out and edit a document (unless someone else is currently editing it), and check it back in with a minimum of fuss. We've gotten this to work reasonably well with CVS + TortoiseCVS, but we're now considering Subversion and Mercurial (and open to others if they're a better fit) for their better version tracking, so I was wondering which one supported locking files most transparently. For example, we'd like exclusive locking enabled as the default, and we want to make it as difficult as possible for someone to accidentally start editing a file that someone else has checked out. For example when someone checks out a file for editing, it checks with the master database first even if they have not recently updated their sandbox. Maybe it even won't let a user check out a document if it's off the network and can't check in with the mothership.

I think it was an update for the error message mentioned above. Now the OS update is currently running the 'distribution upgrade' portion of the update. This is further than it had gone before. Again I will report back once this is done to let you know whether or not the update was successful. Final Update: Don't know for sure what happened, but I'm almost sure that the error mentioned above was resolved in the first update prior to the 13.10 update. All set.

• Upgrading to Ubuntu 11.04 failed

  Today Ubuntu asked me to upgrade to 11.04. The installation went completely fine until right at the end when the following packages failed: install-info ubuntu-standard The installer hung so I had to shut it down manually. Ubuntu still works fine but it says that the upgrade didn't work properly so I am hesitant to restart it until I have resolved the problem in case I can't get back in. I am running Ubuntu inside the latest version of Virtual Box and was previously running version 10.10. • ZFS pool broken after upgrading to 14.04 LTS

  Well, I have been putting off upgrading to 14.04 for fear that I would break something. Actually for fear that it would break zfs (or I would break it). I am bascially slightly better than novice at linux. Spent the last couple of hours trying to get the pool back. Now I am at the stage where I don't think I have a complete failure, but I am worried that I may break it. So if could help me not break it, and recover it, I would be thankful. My zfs is file storage and not boot. It was working fine for a year and was working perfectly before the upgrade (scrub and everything was fine). I was confident that the upgrade would work (or at least I could fix it) because I had upgraded once in the past, the pool went missing, but I was able to get it back. I have reinstalled zfs, zfs utilities, and some dependencies (after searching this forum) I think what happened is 14.04 deleted some config file, or specified disk names differntly, but I could be wrong. When I set the pool up originally, I was using specific device Ids as I recall (because I did not want to break things if they got reassigned at boot) So see if this helps. I want to add a little bit of support for .NET 4 but don't want to (in the short term), convert the whole application (which is very large) to target .NET 4.   Following upgrade to 12.10, my usb drives - both pen drives and a usb hard drive - fail to mount with the error message: Unable to mount *name of drive* volume Adding read ACL for uid 1000 to '/media/*my home file name*' failed: Operation not supported This is on a desktop Dell Inspiron 530. I also have a Dell Inspiron Mini 10 netbook which I also upgraded to 12.10 (slightly smaller installation on a flash hard drive). all devices mount automatically without problems on this computer.

• ACPI=OFF in Ubuntu 11.10

  When I tried to upgrade from 11.04 to 11.10 the system froze, so I've been playing around with a couple other linux builds (Fedora, Mint, and Puppy) the last couple days and I keep coming around to the same problem: a lockup during boot; each build referencing a kernel error. On another board someone suggested booting with a boot up line of "ACPI = off". It works with other OS', but I'm not sure where to put this command. Can anyone 'enlighten' me, please?

• Ubuntu 12.04 to 14.04 LTS upgraded but crashed soon after restarting the system

  In Ubuntu 12.04 the update manager offered me to upgrade it to 14.04, so i kept it for upgrading for whole night and after all the downloading, fetching and removing of packages it asked for restart. So i restarted the system that's it from that time there is no log in page, nothing is coming and just a black command prompt prompting initramfs is appearing (BUSY BOX or something). How can i solve this issue ? or there is way to revert back to 12.04? please help?

  Since upgrading from Ubuntu 10.04 to 12.04 on my ACER Aspire One D270 I have problems with WIFI-connectivity. I was planning now to upgrade to Ubuntu 14.04 hoping to solve this problem. On reading the last bunch of questions posted here I find quite a few regarding problems which arose after installing Ubunto 14.04.
