The problem is if I do java -version I get... This is kinda different from using usb-creator because I'd like to have a persistent ubuntu install on the USB drive and not upgrade it every 6 months. From there I'd like to be able to install the most recent ubuntu version. I think it's just a matter of configuring ubiquity, but don't know if this is the case and how exactly do this.

    I just upgraded my system from Lenny to Squeeze following the steps posted here. I followed all the steps using apt-get (in the upgrade from Etch to Lenny i used aptitude as suggested) and the upgrade went fine. In the daily routine I use aptitude to maintain the system up to date and I really like the automatic handling of unused packages, so if I install package A that depends on B when I remove A, B is removed too keeping my system clean. My question is the following: do apt-get and aptitude share the automatic handling of packages? I don't think so, because I found a lot of packages not marked as Auto in aptitude after the upgrade via apt-get. Am I right? How can I fix this in automated way if the answer is yes?

    So today was RTM of Windows Server 2012 R2 Essentials released. I immediately tried to do an in-place upgrade of an existing RTM 2012 Essentials to RTM 2012 R2 Essentials, but get: Windows Server 2012 Essentials cannot be upgraded to Windows Server 2012 R2 Essentials. You can choose to install a new copy of Windows Server 2012 R2 Essentials instead, but this is different from an upgrade, and does not keep your files, settings, and programs. You’ll need to reinstall any programs using the original installation discs or files. To save your files before installing Windows, back them up to an external location such as a CD, DVD, or external hard drive. To install a new copy of Windows Server 2012 R2 Essentials, click the Back button in the upper left-hand corner, and select “Custom (advanced)”. This seems a bit odd, is this really the case? I can't find anything in the official documentation stating that this upgrade isn't possible.

  • SAN cache memory upgrade

    We currently have an IBM DS4300 Dual Controller Fibre SAN. It is a good box, but getting pretty old. It came with 256MB of cache per controller. Recently we replaced the batteries in one of the controllers and noticed that the cache is a DDR PC2100 ECC DIMM. Of course, we are thinking about how cheap this RAM is now and is there any good reason we can't upgrade the RAM. IBM used to have a "Turbo" upgrade to this box that doubled the cache and had a bunch of software features for about 10K USD. Since that product has been end-of-lifed, I don't think we can get that upgrade and we don't need the software upgrades (FlashCopy, StorageCopy, etc). Besides the obvious potential warranty issue, what if any issues would we expect to see if attempting to put 2 - 1GB DIMMS in this unit? Any other things I am missing here?     I tried to upgrade Ubuntu from 11.10 to 12.04. I left it for 24 hours but the upgrade did not complete. Hence I cancelled the upgrade. I thought I will copy all the files that I have to a DVD/CD and try try downloading a copy of Ubuntu. But now, I cannot open any file or copy them. I cannot even shutdown my laptop. I have many important files on my laptop. Can someone help me retrieve my files from my laptop? Regards Ola

    We recently had to upgrade our servers from Win 2008 R2 Standard to Enterprise. The upgrade method was DISM. After the upgrade, a lot of weird things started to happen. Though Windows says it's been properly activated, we lost 1) RDP settings (disappeared from the Remote Setting tab of Properties of My Computer) 2) The option to join a domain is grayed out 3) The server had to 2 physical processors 12 cores each. Now, task manager or windows sees only 1 processor (or only 12 cores) 4) the amount of physical ram on this sever is 32 GB (Windows reports only 4 GB are usable) Has anyone encountered this before ?     Hi, I have a late-2008 unibody macbook model with 2 GB of ram. I am looking to upgrade to 4 GB of ram. I looked about a month ago at Other World Computing's 4 GB upgrade kit and I remember it being around $80. I looked today, finally getting to buy it and it went up to almost $100. I found another site, memoryupgrade.pro that calls itself "Pro memory upgrade" and it looks legitimate - it sells the memory for around $80 in its own brand. The only thing is, I haven't been able to find any reviews about it, and I'm not sure if it actually is reliable. Does anybody have any experience with this site? Does anybody have any other suggestions for buying macbook memory? I have friends who bought from OWC and were happy, should I just spend the extra $30 (including shipping) and buy from them? I had installed a preview version of windows 8 and installed the drivers of windows 7 so it got installed and is working fine. So shall I upgrade it to windows 8 and use windows 7 drivers???? or wait till the drivers are updated??????

  • Should I upgrade memory for my dedicated server?

    My memory usage hangs around 25% (swap is generally 1%) on my dedicated server and load is around 2-5. My host recommended that I upgrade from 2GB of ram to 4GB so that I can increase my innodb_buffer from the default 16MB to 2GB. My innodb table size is 2GB. My question is, given that ram usage is 25% does it make sense to upgrade ram? Queries are hanging sometimes, so I'm thinking that a bigger innodb_buffer could decrease load on the database, just not sure if I really need to upgrade my ram first.

  • How do you prevent file confusion if version-control keywords are forbidden?

    At least two brilliant programmers, Linus Torvalds and Guido von Rossum, disparage the practice of putting keywords into a file that expand to show the version number, last author, etc. I know how keyword differences clutter up diffs. One of the reasons I like SlickEdit's DiffZilla is because it can be set to skip leading comments. However, I have vivid memories of team-programming where we had four versions of a file (two different releases, a customer one-off, and the development version) all open for patching at the same time, and was quite helpful to verify with a glance that each time we navigated to an included header we got the proper one, and each time we pasted code the source and destination were what we expected. There is also the where-did-this-file-come-from problem that arises when a hasty developer copies a file from one place to another using the file system, rather than checking it out of the repository using the tool; or, more defensibly, when files under control in locations A, B, and C need to be marshalled (with cherry-picking) into a distribution location D. In places where VCS keywords are banned, how do you cope?

  • How many repositories should I use to maintain my scripts under version control?

    I mainly code small programs for myself, but recently, I've been starting to code for my peers on my team. To that end, I've started using a Mercurial repository to maintain my code in some form of version control (specifically, Tortoise-Hg on Windows). I have many small scripts, each in their own directory, all under one repository. However, while reading Joel's Hg Tutorial, I tried cloning a directory for one of my bigger scripts to create a "stable" version and found I couldn't do it because the directory wasn't itself a repository. So, I assume (and please correct me if I'm mistaken) that in order to use cloning properly, I'd have to create a repository for each script/directory. But.. would that be a "good idea" or a future maintenance nightmare waiting to happen? Succinctly, do I keep all my (unrelated) scripts in one repository, or should I create a repository for each? Or some unknown third option?

  • How can I find out which version of emacs introduced a function?

    I want to write a .emacs that uses as much of the mainline emacs functionality as possible, falling back gracefully when run under previous versions. I've found through trial and error some functions that didn't exist, for example, in emacs 22 but now do in emacs 23 on the rare occasion that I've ended up running my dotfiles under emacs 22. However, I'd like to take a more proactive approach to this, and have subsets of my dotfiles that only take effect when version = <some-threshold> (for example). The function I'm focusing on right now is scroll-bar-mode but I'd like a general solution. I have not seen a consistent source for this info; I've checked the gnu.org online docs, the function code itself, and so far nothing. How can I determine this, without keeping every version of emacs I want to support kicking around?

I'm intending to use Git for version control, and I'm interested to see what guidelines or standards people are using around version in their groups, similar to coding standards are often written within the group for the group.     When working remotely, our team only has access to our source code by remote desktop into our office PCs so we never really work in offline mode. Does a distributed version control system like Mercurial or Git still give us advantages over our current centralized Subversion set up? If so, what are they? Are there any drawbacks or pitfalls?
