  • Disk Image Tools for Windows Server 2008

    I have a Windows Server 2008 X64 machine that I need to swap the boot drive on. I'd like to use a disk image/restore utility to make an image of the boot partition and restore that to the new drive. Does anyone know of a free or reasonably priced tool that can do this? I know that Acronis True Image will do it, but you need to have their server product to restore images of a server OS and it's prohibitively expensive ($850). Thanks, jon

  • Auditing events 4656 and 4658 on Windows folder on Server 2008

    During an overnight system state backup we are seeing thousands of success audit events (4656, 4658) on the folder c:\windows\servicing, system32 and others in the windows folder. We use file success auditing on some files so I can't disable it but this deluge is filling up the logs and making reporting tricky. What is the harm of changing the auditing settings on the windows folder? What are the recommended settings to put on the files for those people doing system state backups? Thanks,

They used to run and end without abending, but now they open and stay open and I have to setup the task to quit them by force before their next scheduled run.     Can anyone recommend a good eSATA PCIe card for Windows Server 2008 (x64)? I bought a J-Micron JMB363 and it's recognized by the OS and I can install one of their reference drivers, but it's not picking up the drive I have attached to it. Basically, I want to be able to transfer exported Hyper-V machines quickly to an external drive, and it seems that using one of these eSATA cards is the way to go.

    Howdy, I just recently installed hyper-v server 2008 r2 on a dedicated server i have, but i'm having trouble enabling remote management. Running the HVRemote - http://code.msdn.microsoft.com/HVRemote - tool seems to have yielded some positive results, and all tests on the server pass (firewall, permissions, etc), but client-side things are not working. I'm stuck at this step : 5: - Simple query to root\cimv2 WMI namespace FAIL - Simple query failed Cannot perform simple query against root\cimv2 Anyone could help me figure this out?     Hi all There is a simple way to check the integrity of a backup made with Windows Backup in Windows 2008 Server Enterprise (not R2)? Today i tried to restore some files from a backup I made some days ago, and the Windows Backup snap-in reported that the file was unreadable.   • Viewing auto-created printers on a 2008 R2 Remote Desktop Services server

    On our 2003 Terminal Servers I am able to view any auto-created printers for users connected to that server, however on a new 2008 R2 RDS server I can only view local printers and my own auto-created printer(s). I have local and domain admin privileges. Is there something I need to change to be able to view all client printers? Is it possible? I have had a look for permissions relating to this but couldn't really find much that looked relevant.

    Hi, I have a brand new windows 2008 server (64 bit) with a brand new installation of Office 2007, fully patched with all windows updates etc. Every time I try to run any of the office apps it crashes immediately, even in safe mode. the only remotely useful information I get is: Exception Code: c0000005 Exception Data: 00000008 If I Run in compatibility mode for windows XP, everything is fine. Anyone ever seen this before? I've tried turning off DEP but that made no difference either Thanks Tim

    Hello, I have a Windows 2008 Server running the File Server Role and I would like to use mount points for my volumes instead of drive letters. However, I need to use the quota and file screening features of File Server Resource Manager, and it seems that they do not apply correctly to mount point folders.   • 401 - Unauthorized On Server 2008 R2 IIS 7.5

    I have a web application deployed to Server 2008 IIS 7.5 box. From remote it gives this error: 401 - Unauthorized: Access is denied due to invalid credentials. (remote = desktops on the same LAN) Have tried several remote clients using different browsers, all the same result. (IE, FF, and Chrome) Hitting the application from the desktop of the server itself works flawlessly. However I have not tried Firebug on the server desktop. I would assume it's still issuing a 401 status code yet returning the content anyway. See Update #2. The application is using Anonymous Authentication. The application is written in .NET 4.0 Asp.Net using the MVC framework. Static content works fine, example: http://server.com/content/image.jpg Sysinternals procmon returns these 2 results for each request: FAST IO DISALLOWED and PATH NOT FOUND. I have 2 other MVC apps running fine on the same server. I have checked the security on the folders and they all match. App runs fine on a Server 2008 IIS 7.0 box. Nothing shows up in the Event log on the server related to this. Pulling my hair out here, any troubleshooting tips? UPDATE #1: This just get's more WTF as I dig. If I click on the Application in IIS Manager - Error Pages - Edit Feature Settings select Detailed Errors, the app works remotely. Not leaving this on, so problem is not solved yet, its just more confusing. UPDATE #2: Using Firebug, I see that the Status is still 401 Unauthorized, but the Response is returning the application's correct HTML.     I had a dns forwarder configured that seems to be choking on a particular server name so I switched to using google's dns as a forwarder (8.8.4.4). When I change that setting in Windows DNS (Server 2008 R2) Do i need to restart the dns service for the change to take effect? I ask because i can do a nslookup on the name using 8.8.4.4 and it resolves but even with 8.8.4.4 in my forwarders list it will not resolve when i run nslookup on my local DNS server.
