  What should an application developed under a Linux System like Ubuntu do so as to automatically detect the system language? There are applications, like Liferea that automatically change their language to match the system's, without altering any preference of the program itself: Should this be the "default" behavior for all the programs? Should there be an option on the program so as to let the user choose the language nonetheless? Are all these translations coming along with the program itself? What if the user has set a system language not available in the translations of the program? Is this Ubuntu or most-linux-distros specific?

• Stop KDE services from running

  I recently installed KDE with the command sudo apt-get install kubuntu-desktop. Now whenever I log into Unity I can see KDE-related services running in the background and I see no obvious way to prevent them from opening at startup. I checked bum but I see nothing there. These are the services I see running right now: kde4 klauncher knotify4 These ones I can identify as being related to KDE given their names, but there could be more. How can I prevent these services from launching by themselves? I should mention I often use KDE applications such as kate, okular and kile. Could these be responsible for opening those services?

• Terminal shows menu in panel but window is missing

  I upgraded from 10.10. Then everything worked well except very important one -- my terminal. I try to open my terminal, but no any window popup. I press alt+tab and the windows switcher appears in which there is the terminal. I switch to it, however, nothing happens. I can see the word terminal in my top bar. When I move cursor on it I see the file edit view and so on. But they are useless unless I can find my terminal window. I have no problem with chrome, firefox, eclipse, ubuntu software center, pidgin and many more applications. But without terminal, I'm using a disabled linux.

  Hi. I know that parallel programming is a big resource in computer graphics, with moder machines, and mayebe a computing model that will be grow up in the near future (is this trend true?). I want to know what is the best way to deal with it. there is some practical general purpose usefulness in studying processor n-dimensional mesh, or bitonic sort in p-ram machines or it's only theory for domain specific hardware used in real particular signal elaborations of scientific simulations?   Does anyone else out there long for the simpler days where you needed to move a jumper in the jumper block to set your modem card to use IRQ7 so it would not conflict with the interrupts used by other boards in your PC and your modem card came with a 78 page manual telling you everything you would need to know to write your own driver for the board including a full schematic along with the board layout showing every chip, capacitor, and resistor?  Ahhhhh, the simplicity!I am wrestling with UserPnp issues for a USB software licensing dongle that is needed by some third party software in one of our production applications. Of course, every machine in production is virtual, so it could be anything in the chain of the software application library to the device driver running on the VM to the configuration of the simulated USB port to the implementation of the USB connection and transport in the virtual host to the physical electrical connections in the USB port on the hypervisor.If only there were the virtual analog to a set of needle-nose pliers to move a virtual jumper.Come to think of it, I always used to drop those damn things such that they would land in an irretrievable position under the motherboard anyway.

  I've been working as a programmer for a few months and I often study CCNA , CISSP for future. Besides simple coding I was working on specs, designing applications, and all those around-like things. My question is, I want to be a information / system security specialist. what's the career path I should be aiming for? Is it like working on code for the rest of my life? :) Restart my career from the network engineer ? Or do programmers make a good manager-position people ? I know it's very subjective. Thing is, lately I find myself much more into the designing/working on specs part of the development project then the coding itself. How do you see it? Would you like to go from development to information security? Would you like to work on a project with a manager that used to be a coder?

  3D engine programmers have to care a little about execution speed, but what about the programmers at ATI and nVidia ? How much do they need to optimize their driver applications ? Are there jobs out there who only purpose is execution speed and optimisation, or jobs for people to program only in assembly ? Please, no flame war about "premature optimisation is the root of all evil", I just want to know if such jobs exists, maybe in security ? In kernel programming ? Where ? Not at all ?

• Good Intro to Computer Science Book for FE Developer [on hold]

  I am a JavaScript developer/architect who, like many developers these days, did not come from a Computer Science background (I studied Philosophy at a liberal arts college), but instead learned development by actually building applications, and by reading books explaining language grammars, design patterns, and best practices. I have never felt that my ignorance of CS concepts has hurt my ability to build great apps or find employment. Recently, however, I have felt the itch to grow in this direction. Do you have any suggestions for some good introductory CS resources/books? I know that Computer Science is a huge field and my question is very general, but I am looking for a 101-type survey of the high-level concepts, from which I can branch off into more specific areas of study. • Building my first ASP.NET WebForms application problem

  Hi I have recently started to learn C#/ASP.NET WebForms and after reading two books I thought I was ready to create my first web application. Problem is I could not have been more wrong. Although I am not quite a beginner as a programmer and have done some programming in Java (a Monopoly game), JavaScript (using jQuery), and PHP (create templates for WordPress), I never really created something that is database driven, and I can't seem to figure where to start. I am very confident in my HTML/CSS/jQuery skills, so that is not the problem. My end goal after becoming comfortable in ASP.NET WebForms is to learn MVC, ADO.NET, and the Entity Framework, and start a career as a .NET developer. I would like if someone could tell me some tutorials that build ASP.NET WebForms applications, such as a blog, so I can see what are the steps in creating an ASP.NET WebForms database driven application. I already have to projects in mind for ASP.NET. One is building a blog and the other building a job board.

• Why is JavaScript not used for classical application development (compiled software)?

  During my years of web development with JavaScript, I come to the conclusion that it's an incredible powerful language, and you can do amazing things with it. It offers a rich set of features, like: Dynamic typing First-class functions Nested functions Closures Functions as methods Functions as Object constructors Prototype-based Objects-based (almost everything is an object) Regex Array and Object literals It seems to me that almost everything can be achieved with this kind of language, you can also emulate OO programming, since it provides great freedom and many different coding styles. With more software-oriented custom functionalities (I/O, FileSystem, Input devices, etc.) I think it will be great to develop applications with. Though, as far as I know, it's only used in web development or in existing softwares as a scripting language only. Only recently, maybe thanks to the V8 Engine, it's been used more for other kind of tasks (see node.js for example). Why until now it's only be relegated only to web development? What is keeping it away from software development?
