• Change administrator username

  I have accidentally typed my name wrong when I created the administrator account. Although I managed to change the user name at the login screen, I am unable to rename the /home/oldusername to /home/newusername. I tried most of the online tutorials, and it failed. The code I tried was this: usermod -l newusername -m -d /home/newusername oldusername But the output is: cannot lock /etc/passwd; try again later. How can I fix the issue and change the folder to newusername and expect all the applications to work as before?

• Windows Forms Development - Books

  So I'm reading a book for architecting applications for the enterprise from the Microsoft Press. It's a great book, and I'm learning a lot. However, it's very high level, and can be applied to a lot of different domains (not even just .NET, even though that's how the book is geared). The first project I want to develop after reading the book is a Windows Forms application in .NET 4.0. I want to use a lot of the books concepts to develop the app, but I really want a great Windows Forms dedicated book to read before starting that's really going to tell me all I need to know about developing Windows Forms apps. I found plenty of books for .NET 2.0 and stuff, but nothing for Windows Forms in the new .NET 4.0 Framework. Any suggestions?

• How can an application (like Firefox) be forced to use a certain network interface?

  I've two interfaces: eth0 and wlan0 on a notebook. Possible use cases: eth0 grants me Internet access, and wlan0 is currently connected to a router which does not have Internet-connectivity. For development purposes, I need to connect to the wlan0 by default, but use eth0 for surfing eth0 and wlan0 are both connected to the Internet. For a torrent application, eth0 should be used for speed, but for portability of the notebook, SSH should have a connection over wlan0 eth0 is a wire connection, wlan0 is a wireless one. Sensible data should be transferred over eth0, but other traffic can go over wlan0 as well. Is there a way to force applications (like nc.traditional or firefox) to use a certain network interface? A wrapper like example-wrapper eth0 program is fine too if such program exist. It would be nice if it could configured within Firefox (in runtime). I'd like to avoid IPTables solutions if possible.

  I'm an on and off novice ubuntu user, last used 9.04 and installed 11.10 a week ago. What I want to happen, edit unity to suit how I use my computer: Copy the way xmonad (www.xmonad.org) shows its applications and that is that there is no "exit, minimize, maximize" bar on top of the application I've read a few things on how to configure unity using Ubuntu Tweak and MyUnity I want to eventually switch to xmonad but for now it is still too complicated for me even with all the docs & tutorialss it's still too complicated for me & I cannot yet let go of my mouse tl;dr? from this: to this Is this possible? And if it is possible, how?

• How can I fix my problems with fonts in Firefox?

  Ever since I reinstalled Ubuntu a few hours ago, I've experienced major visual artifacts with smaller font sizes in Firefox. The fonts end up looking like this: Or even like this: This only occurs in Firefox; other applications are unaffected. It also occurred on the LiveUSB I used for installation, making me suspect a hardware or driver issue. The output of lshw on my computer is here: http://pastebin.com/LnSt6veT. Any idea what might be causing this, or how I can fix it? ... and "Use Google Chrome" is not a valid answer. ;)

• On-line Based Conferencing For Admin Panel

  Working on my admin panels work station section which will allow the admin to use simple office tools such as word editors, calculators and whatnot. Under this section of the admin panel, I would like to add a conferencing feature which will allow any administrator to connect with another administrator 1-2-1 under the 1-2-1 Conferencing section, or to join a meeting under 'live meeting' section. Upon my search for on-line based, I found there are all these, what seem to be great applications out there, however not all of them are on-line based, and come with a price! I would like to a purely on-line based conferencing/meeting/1-2-1 feature which will allow administrators to communicate via text or sound, stream their video, share their screen and sending of files. I know this sounds like a big feature, and I am not asking for someone to answer by programming one for my website! Does anyone know my best solution to progress to having this feature on my website, any tutorials or free to use, free to modify web plugins? Thank you for your help, Best Regards, Tim

• RTOS experience

  I have been working as an embedded software engineer on mostly 8 bit micro-controller firmware and desktop/mobile applications development for the past five years. My work on a WinCE project (in which I got introduced to .NET CF) was short lived. I did use core APIs for interrupt processing, peripheral communication, etc...but again, not exactly a pure RTOS environment. In order to get together more solid experience for growing more in the embedded field, I want to work more with RTOSes. Will buying an evaluation board with an RTOS and putting together a project at home be regarded as a good experience or will an online course be more useful? I am just not clear as to what will be regarded as good experience. Any suggestions or directions will greatly help me. I have a passion for the field but just a need a point in the right direction.

  One of things I do in my Resume is try to quantify the impact my work has had in the particular company I was with at the time. The reason is it shows the value my work had added to the business. Is this what you guys do as well or am I the only one? In my previous job this was easy as I worked on short/medium internal applications and it was fairly easy to measure end result. For example, external consulting company quoted $50,000 for an application Business Services department wanted I completed it in 3 days so I say I saved the company $48,000. I have been in my current job for 3 years but all of it has been on 1 single well established product. About 30% work is maintenance and 70% work is on new modules. I have worked on various modules like API (WCF), Security (2 factor authentication), etc. How should I quantify work on modules? Many thanks.

  Justed stumbled across CRaSH and although it looks mighty interesting, I'm wondering why a Java developer should invest time & energy into learning (yet another) shell language. What sort of standard- and cool-applications can CRaSH be used for? Is this like a Groovy-version of Jython? I guess, when the dust settles, I'm looking for CRaSH's "wow" factors. The complete end-to-end sample application will build a eCommerce website and follows the Java EE 6 design principles of simple and easy-to-use to its core.   I am looking to create a job post to get a satisfactory assistant programmer / templater. Specifically, a php & web programmer. I am, however, afraid of forgetting important things. So, are there resources you can suggest for templates for things to ask and things to tell in a job post for a programmer? Surprisingly, I wasn't able to find similar questions on this site, so there may be duplicate questions out there that I could use but just didn't find. Right now I know that my -requirements- are so generic that they're going to get me in trouble with a spam of applications. e.g. the candidate must know php, must be able to seperate php from html. So I'm looking for criteria that are must-haves, must-mentions, or a general template to try to avoid a "lemon". • How to shrink Windows partition with unmovable files in dual boot installation

  To install Ubuntu alongside Windows 7, I have to shrink Windows 7 partition C:. But due to some unmovable files, I cannot shrink as much as I plan by using Windows own shrinking tool. I guess many of you who have both OSes on the same hard drive must have similar experience. How to solve this problem? Any reference that can help is also appreciated! Thanks and regards! UPDATE: I have identified what unmovable file currently stop further shrinking: \ProgramData\Microsoft\Search\Data\Applications\Windows\Projects\SystemIndex\Indexer\CiFiles\00010015.wid::$DATA If I understand correctly, the file belongs to Windows Search. Can I set up somewhere in Windows system settings to temperately eliminate the file and similar ones (because there are many similar files under the same directory which I guess will also stand in the way of shrinking and unmovable by defrag)?

  My client often has several projects/tasks going at once that sometimes need to be tested simultaneously on one website. They are often separate applications on the website, but sometimes share UDFs, etc. We currently have 3 public-facing environment websites - i.e. dev.website.com, test.website.com, and www.website.com. As the programmer, I'm trying to find a good solution to allow for UA testing of multiple projects/tasks at once. Currently, I'm finding myself switching between code branches (using SubVersion).   When working with fragments, I have been using a class composed of static methods that define actions on fragments.   I have a problem with the MATLAB 2012 installation. After having installed it using alt+f2 and having used gksudo nautilus I have installed MATLAB in the correct folder which is: /usr/local/MATLAB/R2012a Then I inserted the license and the window told "activation complete" or something like that. This made me happy, but only for a while because as soon as I try to search for Matlab within the applications I cannot find it and neither if I try to run matlab into terminal it says: command not found Can someone help me!?
