• What is the default permission for /var/www?

  After upgrading to 12.04, I had to reinstall the LAMP stack. Then I brought all my www project folders from a pen drive to the /var/www folder (using sudo nautilus, and dragging the files in there). Now I cannot make any changes to the files/directories within /var/www. Perhaps this changed with the backup copies I dragged in there. I'd like to know what the default permissions for the /var/www folder are. I don't want to just change the permissions and make my system abnormal and working. Rather I'd like to get it to the correct state that is meant to work.

  Hey, I'm looking to see if anyone can recommend any books in fundamentals of computer science. I obtained my associates degree as a programmer/analyst a couple years ago and I know a good amount about programming on the .NET framework. I'm even certified on the .NET 4 framework as a web application developer. However, since I was only able to obtain my associates degree, I was deprived at my college on the low-level basics and operations of computers and basic computer science information. I'm really interesting in learning about the low-level operations of a computer and in programming (bytes, bits, memory management, etc.) Can anyone recommend any good computer science books for someone who is decently experienced in programming? • Ubuntu 14.04 Notification incorrectly displayed

  I have a problem with my notifications on Ubuntu 14.04 x64. The notifications are just plain text with a colored background, and are also strangely placed in the top left corner. I have no idea on how it changed. After one reboot it was just there.. Here is a picture of the problem in question.: As you can see the notification appear over the unified menu. How can I restore the original state of the notification bubble? • Free Typescript editor with definition based code completion feature

  I know that a plugin for Visual Studio exists. However i can't afford VS so i'm looking for a free alternative which can be used to code TypeScript and aware of the .d.ts definition files and can do code completion based on them. I know that Sublime Text and VIM can do syntax highlighting with the correct language definition file. However the biggest advantage of Typescript for me is that ability to give code assistance while coding. Are you aware of any editor which can do this? I'm interested even if it's in an experimental state.

• Android Emulator - Ubuntu 12.04

  When I type in the command @emulator Andreud where 'Andreud' is the name of the emulator I created. It gives the following errors and a blank screen in which I should get android home screen, icons, etc shows up.   I work for a small company where I maintain a number of project all at once. I would like to create a blog and note software changes/update so that I can keep track of things. Plus it will also serve as help tool for other if they need help. I would like to install something locally on my machine or network, either ASP or PHP is fine. Which software would you recommend? Is it good idea, bad idea? Has anyone done it? I have worked with wordpress and I like it but I am afraid it is not best for code snippets. Any thoughts I do use source control. I am not an expert on it though. I use three different development environment. 1. Visual Studio 2. Eclipse 3. SQL Server Management Studio

• How do I draw video frames onto the screen permanently using XNA?

  I have an app that plays back a video and draws the video onto the screen at a moving position. When I run the app, the video moves around the screen as it plays. • Would google consider this a "link scheme"?

  I work for a County Government. In an effort to improve our search engine rankings I was considering contacting some of the other Counties in my state and seeing if we could setup an arrangement where we link to them and they link to us. It seems like a reasonable thing to have a "Other Counties" page with various links on a County website, but it also seems like it's bordering on a link scheme according to Google. When I read Google's article about link schemes it seems like we hit some of the right reasons for having links on another County's site but also some of the wrong. Does anyone have any insight into whether this is a good or bad idea?

• Q&amp;A: Does it make sense to run a personal blog on the Windows Azure Platform?

  I keep seeing people wanting to do this (or something very similar) and then being surprised at how much it might cost them if they went with Windows Azure. Time for a Q&A. Short answer: No, definitely not. Madness, sheer madness. (Hopefully that was clear enough) Longer answer: No because It would cost you a heck of a lot more than just about any other approach to running a blog. A site that can easily be run on a shared hosting solution (as many blogs do today) does not require the rich capabilities of Windows Azure. Capabilities such as simplified deployed and management, dedicated resources, elastic resources, “unlimited” storage etc. It is simply not the type of application the Windows Azure Platform has been designed for.   After a year programming a web based business management system, I got my idea divided into two differents ways to do what I'm doing... I will try to explain in follow lines: First I will describe my enviroment: Webserver: apache, ngynx Programming Language: PHP, Shell Script, Java Script, SQL Database: Mysql Operating System: Linux, UNIX (All Distros) (If manually configured works on windows) Authentication Server: FreeRadius First situation I have my application running on this enviroment that I had just described before, as my application is a SaaS app, then I have my own server to run it all and customers pay to use it as a service accessed by webbrowser. Second Situation The same as before but with one big difference, everything (environment) is installed in the customer, then I need to cryptography all my codes (It includes PHP and Shell Scripts). I think this situation is most difficulty, but I would like to hear it from different points of view.

• Does using structure data semantic LocalBusiness schema markup work for local EMD URL's?

  Based on what I have read about Google's recent Panda and Penguin updates, I'm getting the impression that using semantic markup may help improve SEO results. On a EMD (exact match domain) site, that may have been hit, we list location-based products. We are now going to be adding a itemtype="http://schema.org/Product" to each product, with relevant details. However, that product may be available in Los Angeles and also in appear in a Seattle results page. We could add a LocalBusiness item type on each geo page to define the geo location for that page. While the definition states: A particular physical business or branch of an organization. Examples of LocalBusiness include a restaurant, a particular branch of a restaurant chain, a branch of a bank, a medical practice, a club, a bowling alley, etc. We could add use the location property which would simply include the city/state details. I realize that this looks like it is meant for a physical location, however could this be done without seeming black-hat?

• Should extension scripts be run in a sandbox?

  In particular, this is about game extensions written in lua (luajit-2.0). I was contemplating whether I should restrict what these scripts can do, and arrived at the conclusion that I probably shouldn't: It's hard to get right. Sounds silly, but chances are my sandbox is gonna end up leaky anyways. The only benefit I could think of would be giving users some sense of security when running third party scripts. The disadvantages would be that it's just incredibly annoying for extension writers. That is, for now, myself (game content will be mostly scripted). The reason I'm asking this now before I actually have anything presentable is that adding a sandbox early on is easy, but would impose said annoying restrictions on myself too. However if I first go on with it and then later decide I do need a sandbox after all, I'm gonna run into problems (I'd either have to rewrite the scripts that are already there, or introduce some form of trust management system which seems to be more trouble than it's worth).

  I am going to be making an online single player browser game. The online element is needed so that a player can login and store the state of their game. This will include things like what buildings have been made and where they have been positioned as well as the users personal statistics and achievements. At this point in time, I am expecting all of the game logic to be performed client side So far, I am thinking I will use flash for creating the client side of the game. I am also creating a MySQL database to store all the users information. My question is how do I connect the two. Presumably I will need some sort of server application which will listen for incoming requests from any clients, perform the SQL query and then return the data. Does anyone have any recommendations of what technology/language to use?

• Are there any examples of a temporal field/object updater?

  The system in question has numerous examples of temporal objects and fields--ones which are a certain variable at a certain point in time. An example of this would be someone's rate of pay--there are different answers depending on when you ask and what the constraints might be; eg, can there ever be more than one of a certain temporal object concurrently, etc. Ideally, there would be an object that handles those constraints when a new state/stateful object is introduced; when a new value is set, it would prevent creating negative ranges and overlaps. Martin Fowler has written some great material on this (such as this description of Temporal Objects) , but what I've found of it tends to be entirely theoretic, with no concrete implementations. PHP is the target language, but examples in any language would be most helpful.
