• How can I check Internet connectivity in a console?

  Is there an easy way to check Internet connectivity from console? I am trying to play around in a shell script. One idea I seem is to wget --spider http://www.google.co.in/ and check the HTTP response code to interpret if the Internet connection is working fine. But I think there must be easy way without the need of checking a site that never crash ;) Edit: Seems like there can be a lot of factors which can be individually examined, good thing. My intention at the moment is to check if my blog is down. I have setup cron to check it every minute. For this, I am checking the HTTP response code of wget --spider to my blog. If its not 200, it notifies me (I believe this will be better than just pinging it, as the site may under be heavy load and may be timing out or respond very late). Now yesterday, there was some problem with my Internet. LAN was connected fine but just I couldn't access any site. So I keep on getting notifications as the script couldn't find 200 in the wget response. Now I want to make sure that it displays me notification when I do have internet connectivity. So, checking for DNS and LAN connectivity is a bit overkill for me as I don't have that much specific need to figure out what problem it is. So what do you suggest how I do it?

• Moodle 2 pages loading up to 2000% faster

  On average our Moodle 2 pages were loading in 2.8 seconds, now they load in as little as 0.12 seconds, so that’s like 2333.333% faster!What was it I hear you say?Well it was the database connection, or more correctly the database library. I was using FreeTDS http://docs.moodle.org/22/en/Installing_MSSQL_for_PHP, but now I’m using the new Microsoft Drivers 3.0 for PHP for SQL Server http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=20098. I’m in a Windows Server IT department, and in both our live and development environments, we have Moodle 2.2.3, IIS 7.5, and PHP 5.3.10 running on two Windows Server 2008 R2 servers and using MS Network Load Balancing.Since moving to Moodle 2, the pages have always loaded much more slowly than they did in Moodle 1.9, I’ve been chasing this issue for quite a while. I had previously tried the Microsoft Drivers for PHP for SQL Server 2.0, but my testing showed it was slower than the FreeTDS driver.Then yesterday I found Microsoft had released the new version, Microsoft Drivers 3.0 for PHP for SQL Server, so I thought I’d give it a run, and wow what a difference it made.Pages that were loading in 2.8 seconds, now they load in as little as 0.12 seconds, 2333.333% faster…I have more testing to do, but so far it’s looking good, I have scheduled multi user load testing for early next week (fingers crossed).To make the change all I need to do was,download the driverscopy the relevant files to PHP\ext (for us they were php_pdo_sqlsrv_53_nts.dll and php_sqlsrv_53_nts.dll) install the Microsoft SQL Server 2012 Native Client x64 http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=29065 add to PHP.ini, extension=php_pdo_sqlsrv_53_nts.dll, extension=php_sqlsrv_53_nts.dllremove form PHP.ini, extension=php_dblib.dllvchange in PHP.ini, mssql.textlimit = 20971520 and mssql.textsize = 20971520change Moodle config.php, $CFG->dbtype = 'sqlsrv'; and 'dbpersist' => Trueand then reboot and test…I've browsed courses, backed up/restored some really large and complicated courses, deleted courses etc. etc. all good.Still more testing to do but, hey this is good start...Hope this helps anyone experiencing the same slowness…

• Forwarding a subdomain to main domain using Godaddy

  I have current blog, which was hosted on Tumblr at http://blog.ryanhayes.net. I'm moving it over to http://ryanhayes.net, and have all the 301 redirects set up for the blog entries to map to my new blog, which is hosted using Godaddy (domain included). When I try to set up a subdomain forward, I'm greeted with a nice 403 Forbidden response (as of this writing, you can see it at http://blog.ryanhayes.net. When I try to ping both the subdomain and domain, they point to the same IP address, so I know blog subdomain has at least switched over to point to the same content. I don't really understand why I would get a 403 Forbidden on the same content that I can see perfectly fine via another domain. Currently, I have a CNAME of blog pointing to @, which is how "www" is set up to forward, so I'm assuming it would do the same thing. My question is what is the proper way to set up my DNS to make the blog subdomain forward to my main domain (301) using the GoDaddy DNS manager? Bonus: What is the background on why I am getting a 403 error the current way? Forbidden You don't have permission to access / on this server. Additionally, a 403 Forbidden error was encountered while trying to use an ErrorDocument to handle the request. UPDATE 12/7/2010 Error on site has been fixed, you can no longer view it from my site.

• Remap keyboard Ubuntu 12.04; Asus Q500A

  I have an Asus Q500A with win8 and Ubuntu 12.04 64 bit; linux kernel 3.8.0-32-generic. I am using gnome-panel, and xserver-xorg-lts-raring. I have been experiencing problems with the keyboard short-cuts since I had a fresh install. fn+f10 is supposed to mute my system, but instead it will repeatedly press d. fn+f11 is volume down, but it presses c. fn+f12 is volume up, presses b repeatedly. Most of the other on-board short-cuts such as adjusting screen and led brightness work most of the time, but sometimes press other letters repeatedly. Also, sometimes my cntr gets held down for no reason. Everything works fine in windows. I have tried installing all recommends and sudo dpkg-reconfigure -a to reconfigure all packages, which did not solve my problem. I have tried using KeyTouch editor to edit keymaps, navigating to /usr/shar/x11/xkb/keymap when I try opening any of these files it says file contains no keyboard element. I think If I were just able to remap my keyboard it might solve my issues, otherwise if anyone knows where I can get asus drivers for 12.04 please let me know Apparently I didn't have all repositories enabled. I executed the following commands and am trying the updates they give me. • Config import on network-manager-openvpn

  I'm trying to use a free service using the OpenVPN protocol using OpenVPN's GUI module in the network manager. The config worked perfectly well as .ovpn on Windows. The behavior in Windows is such that I ran OpenVPN GUI and chose to connect to this particular VPN. It would then show the activity in the attempt to connect and opens a dialog box for username/password authentication. I've successfully imported all the configurations by changing the file type to .conf and using the import feature in network manager. However, attempting to connect would simply display the network manager's attempting to connect animation, but ultimately end with a notification of connection timing out. Option 1: Disconnect AC Shutdown Remove battery Connect AC Startup Under the Batteries category, right-click all of the Microsoft ACPI Compliant Control Method Battery listings, and select Uninstall (it’s ok if you only have 1). Shutdown Disconnect AC Insert battery Connect AC Startup Option 2: Turn off laptop. Unplug AC power. Remove battery. Replace AC power. Turn on laptop, allow OS to boot. Once logged in to the machine, perform a normal shut down. Unplug AC power. Replace battery. Replace AC power. Turn on laptop, allow OS to boot. The battery should once again be charging as normal Additional troubleshooting techniques: Check battery charging status in the BIOS Update BIOS Replace Battery (I did this and the new battery is not charging) See if the battery charging light works when the laptop is powered down. • Security Alert for CVE-2010-0886 and CVE-2010-0887 Released

  Hi, this is Eric Maurice again! Oracle just released a Security Alert to announce the availability of fixes for two vulnerabilities (CVE-2010-0886 and CVE-2010-0887) affecting Oracle Java SE and Oracle Java For Business. Both vulnerabilities only affect Java when running in a 32-bit web browser. These vulnerabilities are not present in Java running on servers or standalone Java desktop applications and do not impact any Oracle server based software. The first vulnerability (CVE-2010-0886) affects the Java Deployment Toolkit (version 6 update 10 through 19) on Windows only. The second vulnerability (CVE-2010-0887) affects the Java Plug-in (version 6 update 18 and 19) on Windows, Solaris and Linux. Both vulnerabilities may allow an attacker to run commands on the user's system with the privileges of the user, whose system may have become compromised by visiting a malicious web site. Oracle rated the severity of both vulnerabilities with a CVSS Base Score of 10.0 because many Windows users grant themselves administrative privileges. However, on other platforms, or for Windows users with limited privileges, the CVSS Base Score is only 7.5, because a successful exploitation of these vulnerabilities cannot result in a full compromise of the affected system. Users can quickly determine if they are running vulnerable versions of Java by pointing their browser to http://www.java.com/en/download/help/testvm.xml. Java SE users can visit http://www.java.com and download the most recent release of Java SE to address these vulnerabilities. Because of the criticality of these vulnerabilities, and the publicity they received as a result of their disclosure before the availability of a fix, Oracle recommends that all customers and Java users update their Java installation to the most recent version (6 update 20). • Xml Serialization and the [Obsolete] Attribute

  I learned something new today: Starting with .NET 3.5, the XmlSerializer no longer serializes properties that are marked with the Obsolete attribute.  I can’t say that I really agree with this.  Marking something Obsolete is supposed to be something for a developer to deal with in source code.  Once an object is serialized to XML, it becomes data.  I think using the Obsolete attribute as both a compiler flag as well as controlling XML serialization is a bad idea. In this post, I’ll show you how I ran into this and how I got around it. The Setup Let’s start with some make-believe code to demonstrate the issue.  We have a simple data class for storing some information.  We use XML serialization to read and write the data: public class MyData { public int Age { get; set; } public string FirstName { get; set; } public string LastName { get; set; } public List<String> Hobbies { get; set; }   public MyData() { this.Hobbies = new List<string>(); } } Now a few simple lines of code to serialize it to XML: static void Main(string[] args) { var data = new MyData {    FirstName = "Zachary", LastName = "Smith", Age = 50, Hobbies = {"Mischief", "Sabotage"}, }; var serializer = new XmlSerializer(typeof (MyData)); serializer.Serialize(Console.Out, data); Console.ReadKey(); } And this is what we see on the console: <?xml version="1.0" encoding="IBM437"?> <MyData xmlns:xsi="http://www.w3.org/2001/XMLSchema-instance" xmlns:xsd="http://www.w3.org/2001/XMLSchema"> <Age>50</Age> <FirstName>Zachary</FirstName> <LastName>Smith</LastName> <Hobbies> <string>Mischief</string> <string>Sabotage</string> </Hobbies> </MyData>   The Change So we decided to track the hobbies as a list of strings.  As always, things change and we have more information we need to store per-hobby.  We create a custom “Hobby” object, add a List<Hobby> to our MyData class and we obsolete the old “Hobbies” list to let developers know they shouldn’t use it going forward: public class Hobby { public string Name { get; set; } public int Frequency { get; set; } public int TimesCaught { get; set; }   public override string ToString() { return this.Name; } } public class MyData { public int Age { get; set; } public string FirstName { get; set; } public string LastName { get; set; } [Obsolete("Use HobbyData collection instead.")] public List<String> Hobbies { get; set; } public List<Hobby> HobbyData { get; set; }   public MyData() { this.Hobbies = new List<string>(); this.HobbyData = new List<Hobby>(); } } Here’s the kicker: This serialization is done in another application.  The consumers of the XML will be older clients (clients that expect only a “Hobbies” collection) as well as newer clients (that support the new “HobbyData” collection).  This really shouldn’t be a problem – the obsolete attribute is metadata for .NET compilers.  Unfortunately, the XmlSerializer also looks at the compiler attribute to determine what items to serialize/deserialize.  Here’s an example of our problem: static void Main(string[] args) { var xml = @"<?xml version=""1.0"" encoding=""IBM437""?> <MyData xmlns:xsi=""http://www.w3.org/2001/XMLSchema-instance"" xmlns:xsd=""http://www.w3.org/2001/XMLSchema""> <Age>50</Age> <FirstName>Zachary</FirstName> <LastName>Smith</LastName> <Hobbies> <string>Mischief</string> <string>Sabotage</string> </Hobbies> </MyData>"; var serializer = new XmlSerializer(typeof(MyData)); var stream = new StringReader(xml); var data = (MyData) serializer.Deserialize(stream);   if( data.Hobbies.Count != 2) { throw new ApplicationException("Hobbies did not deserialize properly"); } } If you run the code above, you’ll hit the exception.  Even though the XML contains a “<Hobbies>” node, the obsolete attribute prevents the node from being processed.  This will break old clients that use the new library, but don’t yet access the HobbyData collection. The Fix This fix (in this case), isn’t too painful.  The XmlSerializer exposes events for times when it runs into items (Elements, Attributes, Nodes, etc…) it doesn’t know what to do with.  We can hook in to those events and check and see if we’re getting something that we want to support (like our “Hobbies” node). Here’s a way to read in the old XML data with full support of the new data structure (and keeping the Hobbies collection marked as obsolete): static void Main(string[] args) { var xml = @"<?xml version=""1.0"" encoding=""IBM437""?> <MyData xmlns:xsi=""http://www.w3.org/2001/XMLSchema-instance"" xmlns:xsd=""http://www.w3.org/2001/XMLSchema""> <Age>50</Age> <FirstName>Zachary</FirstName> <LastName>Smith</LastName> <Hobbies> <string>Mischief</string> <string>Sabotage</string> </Hobbies> </MyData>"; var serializer = new XmlSerializer(typeof(MyData)); serializer.UnknownElement += serializer_UnknownElement; var stream = new StringReader(xml); var data = (MyData)serializer.Deserialize(stream);   if (data.Hobbies.Count != 2) { throw new ApplicationException("Hobbies did not deserialize properly"); } }   static void serializer_UnknownElement(object sender, XmlElementEventArgs e) { if( e.Element.Name != "Hobbies") { return; }   var target = (MyData) e.ObjectBeingDeserialized; foreach(XmlElement hobby in e.Element.ChildNodes) { target.Hobbies.Add(hobby.InnerText); target.HobbyData.Add(new Hobby{Name = hobby.InnerText}); } } As you can see, we hook in to the “UnknownElement” event.  Once we determine it’s our “Hobbies” node, we deserialize it ourselves – as well as populating the new HobbyData collection.  In this case, we have a fairly simple solution to a small change in XML layout.  If you make more extensive changes, it would probably be easier to do some custom serialization to support older data. • How should I deal with user agent parsing in logs?

  My web app project includes logging functionality so we can see where visitors are coming from (referrer URL), what the popular user agents are, what pages are most popular, etc. The log is stored in SQL Server, and when I query the user agents I use a large (almost 100 lines) and growing CASE statement to separate the user agents using string matching (i.e. if the user agent contains the string "Firefox/9" then it's Firefox 9). Is there a better way to do this so I don't have to continually add to that CASE statement to deal with new browser releases? Also, how should I deal with less common, weird/unknown user agents? I've seen the following in the logs and been unable to find good information online about what they are: WordPress/3.3.1; http://www.facecolony.org Mozilla/4.0 ( http://www.hairirons.org redips; <a href=http://hairirons.org/>chi hair iron</a>) I'd guess they're bots/crawlers, but the sites they point to don't appear to reference web crawlers (or even be available sometimes). I've seen other user agents aren't familiar to me, but I know they're bots because they include "bot" or "spider" or something similar in them.

• How do you set up the directory structure for a multilingual site without duplicating content?

  I want to make a website in two languages. I've looked around and settled on the directory option of separating both languages. How do I make it work? Let's say I have the following three files for the landing homepage, the English page and the Spanish page: http://www.domain.com/index.html http://www.domain.com/en/index.html http://www.domain.com/es/index.html Let's also say that /index.html will be in English, with a link to /es/index.html. In turn, /es/index.html will have a link to the English version. Would this be back to /index.html or to /en/index.html. How do I get both English versions (the one at the root and the one in the directory) to actually be the same file in the same directory? I'm new to this, so I'm not using any scripts yet. To me, the obvious solution is to duplicate both English versions and have the one at the root point to files under the /en/ directory, but I'm not a fan of duplication and I've learned that search engines really frown upon that. Anyone point me in the right direction?

• Solaris 11 Customer Maintenance Lifecycle

It'll include policies, best practices, clarifications, and lots of other stuff which I hope you'll find useful as you get up to speed with Solaris 11 and IPS.   Let's start with a version of my Solaris 11 Customer Maintenance Lifecycle presentation which I gave at this year's Oracle Open World and at the recent Deutsche Oracle Anwendergruppe (DOAG - German Oracle Users Group) conference in Nürnberg. Some of you may be familiar with my Patch Corner blog, http://blogs.oracle.com/patch , which fulfilled a similar purpose for System V [five] Release 4 (SVR4) based Solaris releases, such as Solaris 10 and below. Since maintaining a Solaris 11 system is quite different to maintaining a Solaris 10 system, I thought it prudent to start this 2nd parallel blog for Solaris 11. Actually, I have an ulterior motive for starting this separate blog.  Since IPS is a single tier packaging architecture, it doesn't have any patches, only package updates.  I've therefore banned the word "patch" in Solaris 11 and introduced a swear box to which my colleagues must contribute a quarter [$0.25] every time they use the word "patch" in a public forum.  From their Oracle Open World presentations, John Fowler owes 50 cents, Liane Preza owes $1.25, and Bart Smaalders owes 75 cents.  Since I'm stinging my colleagues in what could be a lucrative enterprise, I couldn't very well discuss IPS best practices on a blog called "Patch Corner" with a URI of http://blogs.oracle.com/patch.  I simply couldn't afford all those contributions to the "patch" swear box. :) Feel free to let me know what topics you'd like covered - just post a comment in the comment box on the blog. • HP Notebook Pavilion g6-2101sl freeze

  I just bought this notebook and I've already installed in a new partition Ubuntu 12.04 LTS with 6gb of swap memory. UPDATE2: This is the laptop configuration: http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/document?cc=it&lc=it&dlc=it&tmp_geoLoc=true&docname=c03397517 Sometimes (without any special conditions) Ubuntu freezes. My mouse is blocked, the UI is blocked, ALT+F1 to kill something or to restart is blocked, I can't really do anything... I've also tried and it freezes with: Ubuntu 3D Ubuntu 2D Gnome Shell and it freezes both with low and high load. I can only press on power button (physically) and restart my laptop (and this is not the correct way to do things). I'm using this laptop for work, so I need a stable OS without this freeze. Someone knows how to solve this problem? UPDATE: /var/log/messages is empty /var/log/kernel.log - http://paste.ubuntu.com/1220182/ /var/log/Xorg.0.log - http://paste.ubuntu.com/1220186/ I just installed propetary driver from ATI, it crash anyway. This morning I started laptop, I enabled wireless, opened dropbox and chrome - freeze. When it freeze I cannot: Do ctrl+alt+f1 to get console access AltF2 + r to reload session Alt+Print + RESUB to restart I totally freezed.

  To configure Weblogic server : 1.- Read the following link : How to Use Log4j with WebLogic Logging Services http://download.oracle.com/docs/cd/E12840_01/wls/docs103/logging/config_logs.html#wp1014610 Here the step by step : 2.- Go to WL_HOME/server/lib and copy wllog4j.jar to the server CLASSPATH, to do this copy the file into DOMAIN_NAME/lib 3.- Download log4j jar (in my case I had not the file) from http://logging.apache.org/log4j/1.2/download.html , in this case the last available version is log4j-1.2.17.jar, and copy the file into DOMAIN_NAME/lib (As step 2). 4.- In this case I activate log4j using WLST (Weblogic Scripting Tool), as bellow : 4.1 .- As you're using windows, execute a terminal window and go to DOMAIN_NAME/bin and run the file setDomainEnv.cmd (this file will set the environment to run java). 4.2 .- Execute the following comands : C:\>java weblogic.WLST wls:/offline> connect('username','password') wls:/mydomain/serverConfig> edit() wls:/mydomain/edit> startEdit() wls:/mydomain/edit !> cd("Servers/$YOUR_SERVER_NAME/Log/$YOUR_SERVER_NAME" wls:/mydomain/edit/Servers/myserver/Log/myserver !> cmo.setLog4jLoggingEnabled(true) wls:/mydomain/edit/Servers/myserver/Log/myserver !> save() wls:/mydomain/edit/Servers/myserver/Log/myserver !> activate() you can use ls() to list the objects under the WLS directory this will activate log4j to use it with WLS.
