  Earlier this month, I had a fantastic time presenting at DevReach 2013, in Sofia, Bulgaria on Oct 1, 2013. DevReach strives to be the premier developer conference in Central and Eastern Europe. It is organized annually in Sofia, Bulgaria. The 8th edition of the conference is moving to a new and bigger venue: Sofia Event Center. In my career, I have presented over 9 different countries (India, USA, Canada, Singapore, Hong Kong, Malaysia, Sri Lanka, Nepal, Thailand), this was the first time for me to present in Europe. DevReach was perfect places to start my journey in Europe as an evangelist. The event was one of the most organized event I have ever come across in my life. The DevRech organization team had perfected every minute detail of the event to perfection. After the event was over I had the opportunity to see Sofia for one day. • Kuppinger Cole Paper on Entitlements Server

  Kuppinger Cole recently released a paper discussing external authorization describing how organizations can "future proof" their enterprise security by deploying Oracle Entitlements Server.  By taking a declarative security approach, security policy can be flexible and distributed across multiple applications consistently. You can get a copy of the report here. In fact Oracle Entitlements Server is being used in many places to secure data and sensitive business transactions. The paper covers the major  use cases for Entitlements Server as well as Kuppinger Cole's assessment of the market. Here are some additional resources that reinforce the cases discussed in the paper.   Connect SQL Azure through SSMS. (It will get connected, only if you have port 1433 open.) Create required databases on SQL Azure. Create and execute schema scripts for databases.(Make sure you have written scripts which are 100% compatible with SQL Azure. Tool called SQL Azure migration tool by CodePlex helps with doing this.) • Ubuntu Server 11.04 installs fine then gets stuck on USBHID

  ites! I have installed Server 11.04 many many times from this disc and they have always worked perfectly (installed and operated fine). I wanted to reinstall my server again on the same hardware so I threw the disc in and installed but once it finished installing the boot loader and ejected the disc, it decided to go unresponsive. I restarted it and it loaded in through the grub perfectly it seemed, but then it goes and says either that a ipv6 router is unavailable (even though I have it hardwired to my network) or it goes and says usbhid: USB HID core driver and goes unresponsive there. I am very confused as this never happened before from this install. I want to see if this is just me or what before I just go ahead and download the newest version of server. Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks

• Is there an implementation of Tom Kyte's STRAGG function supporting SQL Server?

  STRAGG function implemention returns a result as a single column value. Implementation for Oracle seems pretty generic and can be consumed for different tables (and relationships). Could similar behavior be achieved for SQL Server. A search in the web, appears to return only hard coded implementations and not a generic one. Do we have any known solution for Sql server?

• Evolution - exchange-connector, Rackspace global catalog server

  I'm (trying to) switch to Ubuntu from Windows XP on my work laptop. Unfortunately, one of the dealbreakers is that I need full Exchange contact/calendar syncing. Our email is hosted by Rackspace (owa.mailseat.com). We login using the usernames of the format [email protected]. I'm trying to set up Evolution to use this account, using exchange-connector-setup-2.32. The first step, entering the OWA URL, usename and password works, and progresses to step 2, where I need to enter a Global Catalog server. I have no idea what to enter here. Everything fails. My questions are - What is the "Global Catalog server" - can I enter/run some dummy server here? - If its necessary, where can I get the information from this? I have a Windows XP machine synced up using Outlook 2007, so if I need to gather any information from that setup I can.

• Deploying SSIS to Integration Services Catalog (SSISDB) via SQL Server Data Tools

• Cluster Nodes as RAID Drives

  I'm unable to sleep tonight so I thought I would push this post out VERY early. When you don't sleep your mind takes interesting turns, which can be a good thing. I was watching a briefing today by a couple of friends as they were talking about various ways to arrange a Windows Server Cluster for SQL Server. I often see an "active" node of a cluster with a "passive" node backing it up. That means one node is working and accepting transactions, and the other is not doing any work but simply "standing by" waiting for the first to fail over. The configuration in the demonstration I saw was a bit different. In this example, there were three nodes that were actively working, and a fourth standing by for all three. I've put configurations like this one into place before, but as I was looking at their architecture diagram, it looked familar - it looked like a RAID drive setup! And that's not a bad way to think about your cluster arrangements. The same concerns you might think about for a particular RAID configuration provides a good way to think about protecting your systems in general. So even if you're not staying awake all night thinking about SQL Server clusters, take this post as an opportunity for "lateral thinking" - a way of combining in your mind the concepts from one piece of knowledge to another. • Microsoft SQL Server 2008 R2 Release

  Microsoft is planning to release the second edition of SQL Server 2008, the new edition will named SQL Server 2008 R2 due to be released by May 1st 2010.   Amongst the change on the edition is pricing which is anticipated to go up by 25% for the Standard Edition and about 15% for the Enterprise Edition. As for the features, there are some very cool additions  including PowerPivot for SharePoint, Master Data Services and Multi-Server Administration. • Fun with upgrading and BCP

  I just had trouble with using BCP out via xp_cmdshell. Probably serves me right but that's a different issue. I got a strange error message 'Unable to resolve column level collations' which turned out to be a bit misleading. I wasted some time comparing the collations of the the server, the database and all the columns in the query. I got so desperate that I even read the Books Online article. Still no joy but then I tried the interweb. It turns out that calling bcp without qualifying it with a path causes Windows to search the folders listed in the Path environment variable - in that order - and execute the first version of BCP it can find. But when you do an in-place version upgrade, the new paths are added on the end of the Path variable so you don't get the latest version of BCP by default. To check which version you're getting execute bcp -v at the command line. The version number will correspond to SQL Server version numbering (eg. 10.50.n = 2008 R2). To examine and/or edit the Path variable, right-click on My Computer, select Properties, go to the Advanced tab and click on the Environment Variables button. If you change the variable you'll have to restart the SQL Server service before it takes effect.

• Ubuntu server Mysql remote access from MySQL Workbench

  I have a newly install ubuntu installed the mysql server. After the basic config, I changed the my.cnf file and commented the bind_address I can start the server and added iptable for 3306. I also add the privileges to mysql server as follow: GRANT ALL PRIVILEGES ON . TO 'root'@'%' IDENTIFIED BY 'P@ssw0rd' WITH GRANT OPTION; FLUSH PRIVILEGES; exit However after connected from the mysql workbench, it shows no database. But it seems that have login. Anyone have faced that or can help me? Thx!

• Transfer domains without disrupting local email server

  Perhaps I am thinking about this wrong, but maybe some of you guys can help me on this one. I have a client who currently has a domain from network solutions and is hosted via GoDaddy. Additionally, he his has email service with GoDaddy as well, but it seems to be forwarded to his local server at work. How can I transfer hosting accounts without disrupting email service (or at least temporarily)? • Using Apache2 to set up a basic webpage

  I am having a problem with a test page I set up for my website. The config file (index.html) looks like this <html> <head> <title>Welcome to website.net!</title> </head> <body> <h1>Success! The website.net virtual host is working!</h1> </body> </html> Which should display a page like this in my browser when I navigate to www.mywebsite.net Welcome to website.net! Success! The website.net virtual host is working! However I get a 403 "forbidden" error when I navigate to the page. What am I missing? I have the directory installed on /var/www/mywebsite.net/public_html/index.html I have the permissions of the /var/www directory set to 755 so that others can read and exicute it but it does not seem to be working. I also have port 80 open on my iptable. The server is a VPS server if that makes a difference however I have added a DNS record for the ip address. Any help is appreciated! I have some markup that I do not wish to change and would prefer to treat this in the same fashion as a standard .Net server control. Also, I know I can use a template based control to place some .Net controls within the markup as hidden and then trigger their click events from a client side click proxy.
