  • Is the Observer pattern adequate for this kind of scenario?

    I'm creating a simple game development framework with Ruby. There is a node system. A node is a game entity, and it has position. It can have children nodes (and one parent node). Children are always drawn relatively to their parent. Nodes have a @position field. Anyone can modify it. When such position is modified, the node must update its children accordingly to properly draw them relatively to it. @position contains a Point instance (a class with x and y properties, plus some other useful methods). I need to know when a node's @position's state changes, so I can tell the node to update its children. This is easy if the programmer does something like this: @node.position = Point.new(300,300) Because it is equivalent to calling this: # Code in the Node class def position=(newValue) @position = newValue update_my_children # <--- I know that the position changed end But, I'm lost when this happens: @node.position.x = 300 The only one that knows that the position changed is the Point instance stored in the @position property of the node. But I need the node to be notified! It was at this point that I considered the Observer pattern. Basically, Point is now observable. When a node's position property is given a new Point instance (through the assignment operator), it will stop observing the previous Point it had (if any), and start observing the new one. When a Point instance gets a state change, all observers (the node owning it) will be notified, so now my node can update its children when the position changes. A problem is when this happens: @someNode.position = @anotherNode.position This means that two nodes are observing the same point. If I change one of the node's position, the other would change as well. To fix this, when a position is assigned, I plan to create a new Point instance, copy the passed argument's x and y, and store my newly created point instead of storing the passed one. Another problem I fear is this: somePoint = @node.position somePoint.x = 500 This would, technically, modify @node's position. I'm not sure if anyone would be expecting that behavior. I'm under the impression that people see Point as some kind of primitive rather than an actual object. Is this approach even reasonable? Reasons I'm feeling skeptical: I've heard that the Observer pattern should be used with, well, many observers. Technically, in this scenario there is only one observer at a time. When assigning a node's position as another's (@someNode.position = @anotherNode.position), where I create a whole new instance rather than storing the passed point, it feels hackish, or even inefficient.

  • Is this a valid implementation of the repository pattern?

    I've been reading up about the repository pattern, with a view to implementing it in my own application. Almost all examples I've found on the internet use some kind of existing framework rather than showing how to implement it 'from scratch'. Here's my first thoughts of how I might implement it - I was wondering if anyone could advise me on whether this is correct? I have two tables, named CONTAINERS and BITS. Each CONTAINER can contain any number of BITs. I represent them as two classes: class Container{ private $bits; private $id; //...and a property for each column in the table... public function __construct(){ $this->bits = array(); } public function addBit($bit){ $this->bits[] = $bit; } //...getters and setters... } class Bit{ //some properties, methods etc... } Each class will have a property for each column in its respective table.   • Request Entity Too Large error while uploading files of more than 128KB over SSL

    We have a web portal setup on Java spring framework. It running on tomcat app server. Portal is served through apache web server connected to tomcat through JK connector. Entire portal is HTTPS enabled using 443 port of apache. Apache version is : Apache/2.4.2 (Unix). it is the latest stable version of apache web server. Whenever we try to upload files more than 128 KB into the portal, We are facing 413 error: Request Entity Too Large The requested resource /teamleadchoachingtracking/doFileUpload does not allow request data with POST requests, or the amount of data provided in the request exceeds the capacity limit. In the apache error log we get the following errors: AH02018: request body exceeds maximum size (131072) for SSL buffer AH02257: could not buffer message body to allow SSL renegotiation to proceed We did search over google and there were suggestions to put SSLRenegBufferSize as some high value like 10MB. Based on these suggestions, we had put the following entry in virtualhost section of httpd config file: SSLRenegBufferSize 10486000 But still the error persists. Also we have specified SSLVerifyClient none, but still renegotiation is happening. This is a very inconsistent and frustrating error. Any help will be highly appreciated. Many thanks in advance.

    I'm trying to set up graphite on my Mac OS X 10.7 lion, i've set up apache to call the python graphite script via WSGI, but when i try to access it, i get a forbiden from apache and in the error log. What do i have to do to get access.   • Upgraded AGPM Server cannot connect to relocated archive

    We were using the Advanced Group Policy Management (AGPM) v3.0 on out Windows Server 2008 DC. It kept the archive on the C: drive. When we upgraded to AGPM v4 we relocated the archive to the D: drive. Now when we try to look at a GPO's hisory in GPMC we get the following error Failed to connect to the AGPM Server. The following error occurred: The server was unable to process the request due to an internal error. For more information about the error, either turn on IncludeExceptionDetailInFaults (either from ServiceBehaviorAttribute or from the configuration behavior) on the server in order to send the exception information back to the client, or turn on tracing as per the Microsoft .NET Framework 3.0 SDK documentation and inspect the server trace logs. System.ServiceModel.FaultException (80131501) You are able to click Retry or Cancel. Retry brings up the same error and Cancel takes you back to GPMC and the History tab displays "Archive not found". I installed the client on a Windows 7 computer (which is a n unsupported set up) and it could read the server archive without any issues. I followed the TechNet article "Move the AGPM Server and the Archive" but that didn't make a difference How can I tell the server where the archive is?

  • Windows 2008 Terminal Services "Easy Print" and Matrix Printers

    Server: Windows 2008 Server Standard SP2 with "Terminal Services" role Clients: Windows XP SP3 + .NET 3.5 Framework SP1 + Remote Desktop Client 7.0 We are using "Easy Print" feature which allows programs running on server to "see" printers installed on client machines. Everything works fine, EXCEPT when we send a text-only output to a dot-matrix printer. In this case, the printer only outputs a blank page. At first, we had problems with the error "Windows Presentation Foundation Terminal Server Print W has encountered a problem and needs to close." but this was fixed by replacing TsWpfWrp.exe with the one from Vista SP1 as suggested here. But now, we only get a blank page! Every other (graphical) document we sent to printer works 100%. We also tried to use the "Generic text-only" driver, but the result is same. Now we are trying to change parameters like print processor on "advanced" tab from printer driver to see if something happen. But this is just guessing and we really don't know what to try anymore. The problem appears to be on Easy Print driver, but we found almost no resources about it. Any tips are welcome.

    Hey, I have a problem running an application on environment with WebSeal. It is a web application with Java server that contains many parts that are replcaed within the page according to user input. For instance - a form called Outer.jsp may contain a form:options combo-box (by spring-forms), that uppon selection of an option, a certain Div is updated with a content produced by a jsp and fetched by an Ajax call (the ajax impementation in the client is done by Prototype JavaScript framework 1.5.1.2). Let's call the content fetched by ajax - Inner.jsp So Outer.jsp is fetching Inner.jsp, which in turn uses js functions in files included by the Outer.jsp. This, I think, is where my problem starts - Inner.jsp is not familiar with any of the functions included in Outer.jsp. And so, almost any operation performed by Inner.jsp is failing miserably. Needless to say - this works perfect when running on environment without WebSeal. Note that the scripting is enabled in WebSeal junction (with the -J option). I also see that the content returned by the Ajax call includes a document.cookie added by WebSeal (not sure it matters to this problem) Can anyone assist? Thanks! Lior

  • Asterisk/FreePBX: Allow other Google Talk clients to ring when using motif module

    I've recently installed FreePBX to act as a link between a SIP soft phone and my Google Talk account. It was easy to set up and outbound calls work just fine, but I've run into two problems with inbound calls that I'm not sure how to resolve. I'm using an inbound route to forward all calls from Google to my soft phone. If the soft phone is not currently registered, Asterisk answers and immediately generates a fast-busy signal (reporting CHANUNAVAIL in the logs), and the call is lost. If the soft phone is registered, Asterisk "answers" the call before rining the soft phone, which means that other Google Talk clients never ring (since from their perspective someone has answered the call). For solving (1) seems like I could use the ChanIsAvail() function (or this answer) to prevent Asterisk from answering in the event that the phone isn't registered. However, I'm not sure what to do about (2), because the behavior I want is for Asterisk to not "answer" the call until I answer the call on the soft phone. How do I configure Asterisk (ideally within the FreePBX framework) such that I can continue to receive calls at other Google Talk clients in addition to forwarding them to a SIP phone?

  • Swap space maxing out - JVM dying

    I have a server running 3 WordPress instances, MySql, Apache and the play framework 2.0 on 64m initial & max heap. If I increase the max heap of the JVM that play is running in even by 16m I see the 128m of swap space steadily fill up until the the JVM dies. I notice that it is only when I am plugging away at the wordpress sites that the JVM will die. I assume this is because the JVM is not asking for memory at the time so gets collected. I notice that when I restart Apache I reclaim about half of my swap and RAM. So is there some way I can configure apache to consume less memory? Also what could be causing the swap space to get so heavily thrashed with just 16m added to the max heap size of the JVM?     I have an app that's accessible via 1.2.3.4/myapp. The app is installed in /var/www/myapp. I've set up a subdomain(apps.mydomain.com) that points to 1.2.3.4. I want the server to point to var/www/myapp if I type apps.mydomain.com/myapp, how do I do that? I have experience creating virtual hosts(lots of them) locally but I'm lost because it's now in production and it's a little different.     I've spent several days trying to deploy Satchmo, in the process asking several questions about deployment (http://stackoverflow.com/questions/11277407/can-anyone-explain-this-error-message-deploying-a-satchmo-project-under-gunicorn, http://stackoverflow.com/questions/11277685/is-there-a-howto-to-fcgi-for-deploying-satchmo, and http://stackoverflow.com/questions/11278295/what-is-the-most-stable-release-of-satchmo). Django's tagline is "The web framework for perfectionists with deadlines," and Satchmo's tagline is equally forceful: "The webshop for perfectionists with deadlines." I'm looking more to set up, configure, design, etc., rather than code for this one, and I'm taking a bit of a hint that for me at least the "with deadlines" bit is something that I cannot manage. Deployment has been a time sink. So, taking a step back, I don't specifically need to edit and extend the source code; what I want are first, good usability and a clean experience for the end-user, then being easy to deploy/install/manage/maintain, and enough so that even if you're having a slow day it should at most be one day's work to install, one day's work to get running, and one day's work to rebrand as white label (for simple branding). What ecommerce webshops should I be looking at?

    Today I lost the ability to see my Windows Server 2008 R2 shares from any of my 3 Windows XP machines in my small office. The 5 Win7 machines haven't been affected (they are still able to browse/access the 2008 server), but none of my WinXP machines can access the 2008R2 server anymore. Yesterday (and for the previous year) everything was working fine. I do not have a domain setup. I can still access Win7 shares from WinXP clients.   • Windows 7 on an EEE PC 901 - Is it a practical change?

    I am currently running WinXP on my EEE PC 901, and I'm happy to say that it runs really well. But this did not come with out significant manipulation of the OS. Here's the basic steps I took: Install XP Modify registry to install Install bare essential drivers Relocate page file to d:\ (remember, this model has two SSD's, one roughly 3.6gb, and the other roughly 16gb - XP won't run on the bigger drive, only the smaller one) Install remaining drivers skip normal updates, install service pack 2 straight away. modify system registry to place service pack backup folder into new Program Files directory on D drive (where software is being installed). Change My Documents folder to sit on D drive. Install .net framework Install remaining updates and service pack 3 (the hidden backup folders in the c:\Windows directory are deleted after every update as well as the contents of the service pack downloads folder in order to continually free up space). I have also found that Disktrix UltimateDefrag to be brilliant at keeping the system clean and tidy. This is roughly the order I did things in. In this configuration the machine works really well. QUESTION: Can this kind of configuration be implemented with Windows 7 to achieve the same result on this machine? Thanks in advance. Dave.

  • MMC crashes on Windows Server 2008 x64 - Exchange console, event viewer

    Help! I don't know what happened; this server has been very reliable but suddenly began having problems with a particular .NET 2.0 web site simply hanging - it wouldn't load at all. However, another ASP.NET site was still fine. Reinstalling the site didn't fix it, nor did deleting and re-creating the application within IIS. Trying the event viewer was met with a horrifying "Microsoft Management Console has stopped working". Some Googling led me to believe the .NET framework was the problem. I found a tool called the .NET cleanup tool - http://blogs.msdn.com/astebner/pages/8904493.aspx - which cleaned out .NET entirely. I reinstalled .NET 1.1 and 3.5 (which installed 2.0 and 3.0 as well). Using the .NET verification tool - http://blogs.msdn.com/astebner/pages/8999004.aspx - I believe these have all installed ok. However, my server is in worse shape now. The Exchange 2010 Management Console crashes with an MMC error and now my other (previously reliable) .NET web app now hangs on loading too. I thought I should use Computer Management to remove and re-add the application and web server roles but sure enough, MMC crashes. If anyone can help I will be extremely grateful. Thank you !
