• Architect Day Artifacts

  In the last eight days the Oracle Technology Network Architect Day tour has stopped in Dallas,  Anaheim (Disneyland, to be precise) , and at Oracle HQ in Redwood Shores,  CA. I was on-scene for the Dallas event, where I pulled a TMZ-style ambush on Chris Benedict from the Oracle Enterprise Solutions Group to capture this short video.     The other presenters escaped. • Whew.... what a week!

  Last week was a busy week for the UPK and Tutor teams at Oracle. It started with the the Collaborate Conference in Las Vegas and ended with our first UPK and Tutor Customer Advisory Board (CAB) meeting at Oracle HQ. The Collaborate Conference is a yearly event sponsored by three of the largest Oracle User Groups. • Oracle Applications User Group (OAUG) • Independent Oracle User Group (IOUG) • Quest - International User Group The User Groups are completely user run organizations with Oracle participation. If you've never attended a conference, time to start planning for the 2011 event in Orlando! If that's out of your reach, there are many regional and industry user groups that meet on a regular basis. They offer a great way to get involved, network with other users, and increase your knowledge around the Oracle applications. For a list of groups near you, check out the Oracle User Group Center. I'll add that the biggest meeting of Oracle users is at the Oracle Open World Conference in San Francisco in September, where we will have many UPK & Tutor focused development and customer sessions. More information on Oracle Open World will be forthcoming over the next few months. We hope to see many of you there! The CAB was a first for the UPK and Tutor team. Although we speak with customers regularly, this gave us an opportunity to meet in a more formal setting to discuss industry trends, business issues, and the direction of the products. Members serve a 2 year term and are required to attend 2 meetings per year, one in person, one via phone. We have some tweaking to do to our meeting format (most members wanted it to be longer!), but the overwhelming consensus was that it was a great success. There were many experiences and ideas shared and the wheels of the UPK and Tutor Development teams have been turning ever since. I'm sure you will see some of these discussions result in new product features over time. What a great week!

• Bridged VM guest does not get IPv6 prefix

  I have a similar problem and setup as described in IPv6 does not work over bridge. My host get a IPv6 prefix but the guest VM only gets a local fe80-prefix. • Cannot update Eclipse due to conflicting dependencies

  I installed Eclipse via the Ubuntu repos (I'm on Ubuntu 11.10). Then I added the Indigo repo (http://download.eclipse.org/releases/indigo/) as only Helios repos were listed as part of the default install. If I go to HelpCheck for Updates then a number of updates are listed for install, however when I click Next I get the following error: Cannot complete the install because of a conflicting dependency. • Introducing Elke Phelps, Guest Author

  I'm very pleased to welcome Elke Phelps as a new contributor to this blog.  Elke needs little introduction to most long-time readers, as she's been a pillar of the E-Business Suite sysadmin community for years.  What's special about this announcement is that Elke is joining this blog's panel of guest authors as a member of my Product Management team in the Oracle E-Business Suite Applications Technology Group.  I am thrilled to have her as part of my team and look forward to her contributions to this blog. Here's a short bio: Elke is a Product Manager in the Oracle E-Business Suite Applications Technology Group.  She joined Oracle in 2011 after having been an Oracle customer and Oracle Technologist (Oracle Database Administrator, Oracle Applications DBA, Technical Architect and Technical Manager of an Oracle Applications DBA Team) since 1993. Elke is the lead author of the Oracle Applications DBA Field Guide (Apress 2006) and Oracle R12 Applications DBA Field Guide (Coqui Tech and Press 2010).  Elke is also the founder of the Oracle Applications User Group (OAUG) E-Business Suite Applications Technology Special Interest Group (SIG) and served as President of the SIG from February 2005 - August 2011.  Elke has been a speaker at Oracle OpenWorld and Collaborate since 2004.  Prior to joining Oracle, Elke was designated an Oracle ACE (2007) and Oracle ACE Director (2009).   Elke has a Computer Science Degree and a Masters of Business Administration from the University of Oklahoma.  In her spare time, Elke enjoys traveling especially to Europe, Puerto Rico and the amazing US National Parks.  Elke also enjoys hiking, antiquing, gardening and cooking.

• Platformer Enemy AI

  I'm currently developing a platformer shooter. The game is multiplayer and while my net code could use some real work I have put that off for the time, so currently I'm trying to implement the AI. The game is pretty simple; Players run around on a map filled with a X amount of zombies that try to eat their brains, classic and overused I know. Weapons spawn at random intervals around the map. The problem is that the zombies, when they find their pray the have to follow it for some while.. And here is the problem, running the AI navcode seems to take for ever. So here is the ideas I have come up with so far Have the AI update at different intervals with a maximum of Y ms with no updates. Have the zombies assigned to groups of zombies. One is appointed the leader of the group who finds the way to the player - the rest just follows the leader. If the leader dies another one of the zombies in the group is appointed president of the zombie swarm. If there is less than five zombies in a group they try to meet up with other zombies.(Aka they are assigned to a different group and therefor a new leader) Multi-threading option one or two? For navigation I have some kinda navmesh(since the game is not tile-based) that tells the zombies where they can walk etc. If anyone else got some ideas on how to do navigation I would love some input. For LoS(zombie - player) I have split the map into grids. If the players grid is connected to the zombies grid(if I go with option two I would only need to check if leader zombies grid is connected to player, aka less checks) - if they are connected and there is more than 250ms since last check do a raytrace.. This is my first time programming AI so input on any field is appreciated.

• Quick Script for Adding Skype Groups

  So, I needed to add about 30 people to several different Skype groups today, and I didn’t want to repeat the /add [skypename] thing over and over and over.  Building the list was a pain . . . I couldn’t find a good way to extract all of the users in an existing group.  There’s probably an api or something, but I just did that part by hand. Adding them to the groups was pretty easy with Windows Scripting Host.  Basically, I just ran this: <package>    <job id="vbs">       <script language="VBScript">          set WshShell = WScript.CreateObject("WScript.Shell")          WshShell.AppActivate 4484          WScript.Sleep 100          WshShell.SendKeys "/add user1~"          WScript.Sleep 100 …          WshShell.SendKeys "/add usern~"          WScript.Sleep 100       </script>    </job> </package> Add as many users as you need by copying the sendkeys and sleep lines.  Then, save the script to a .wsf file.  The AppActivate line needs to be changed to have the process id of skype instead of the number there.  To get that, open up Task Manager, click on Processes, then find skype.exe and find it’s PID. Before you double click on the file in windows explorer, you’ll need to have created the groups in skype.  For each group, open the group, and click in the chat window of the group.  Then double click on the WSF file.  If you don’t click in the chat window, you will likely get the add user dialog box instead of just adding the users. • Nautilus file share for multiple users is not working. Only owner gets access.

  I have always had trouble setting up samba shares with ubuntu. In the past I've tried getting it to work by configuring /etc/samba/smb.conf but never achieved what I wanted. Last time I managed to get it working by making a share with nautilus built in file sharing (which utilises samba). Now when I try do it again I doesn't work. (running ubuntu 10.10 Desktop x64) What I'm trying to achieve is a share which is available for multiple users (those who are in the same group) and not just the owner (who also is included in the group). As it is now I can connect with only the owner, the others are getting an error when I try to connect with windows 7. All the users are within the same group and the folder permissions are 770. The files and folders have the correct group settings. I think there is no restrictions in the User Settings for the other users blocking them and I marked "make available to other users (or whatever it says)" in the file sharing dialog. What can I do?

  We know from speaking with many of you at tradeshows and user groups that database delivery is not a factory production line. During planning, evaluation, quality control, and disaster mitigation, the people having their say at each step means that successful database deployment is a carefully managed course of action. With so many factors involved at every stage, we would love to find a way for our software to help out, by simplifying processes, speeding them up or joining together the people and the steps that make it all happen. We’re hoping our new research group for database delivery (SQL Server and Oracle) will help us understand the views and experiences of those of you out there in the trenches managing database changes. As part of our new group, we’ll be running a variety of research sessions, including surveys and phone interviews, over coming months. If you have opinions to share on Continuous Integration or Continuous Delivery for databases, we’d love to hear from you. Your feedback really will count as the product teams at Red Gate build plans. • File permission issues after setting up an amazon ec2 instance

  I've set up an amazon ec2 instance and I'm have some file permission issues. I've created myself a new user and added myself to the following groups: adm:x:4:me,ubuntu www-data:x:33:me,www-data ssh:x:108:me admin:x:111:me ubuntu:x:1000:www-data,me me:x:1001:me but when I cd /var/www I can't do simple commands without doing sudo first. So I chmod -R www-data:www-data /var/www to ensure that I'm in the owning group but I still have to type sudo for everything. If I sudo su www-data it works fine. Since I'm in the www-data group shouldn't I have the same privilages as www-data? One strange thing I'm noticing is that when I ls -l it list the owner but not the group names. Could this possibly be part of the issue? • BizTalk 2009 - How do I do t"HAT"?

  In my previous life working with BizTalk Server 2004, I came to view HAT (the Health and Activity Tracking tool) as one of my first ports of call in the case of problems with any of our BizTalk solutions.  When you move to BizTalk Server 2009 it is quickly apparent that HAT is no longer with us. HAT was useful in BizTalk 2004 mainly as it provided developers and administrators with a number of useful queries and views of what was going on inside BizTalk at runtime; when and what type of messages were received and sent, what messages had been suspended, what orchestration were running or suspended, you could even follow the process flow of a message or orchestration to see what was going on. With BizTalk Server 2009 much of the functionality of HAT can now be found in the BizTalk Administration console.  Select a BizTalk Group and you will be shown the Group Hub Overview page.  This provides a number of default queries that replicate some of those found in the old HAT. You can also use the Group Hub page to create new queries.  These can then be saved and loaded in other Group Hub instances - useful for creating queries in development for later use in Test, Psuedo-Live and Live environments. In the next few posts I am going to look at some of the common queries that we might miss from HAT and recreate them (or something close) using the new query option. Messages - last 100 received Messages - last 100 sent Messages - last 50 suspended Service instances - last 100 I have yet to try the updated Admin-HAT-Console in anger, and after using old-HAT for so long it may take some getting uesd to, but so far I would say that moving the HAT functionality into the BizTalk Administration console was probably the correct way to go.  Having one tool as the place to look for the combined functionality on offer certainly seems to be the sensible option.

• Mahout - Clustering - "naming" the cluster elements

  I'm doing some research and I'm playing with Apache Mahout 0.6 My purpose is to build a system which will name different categories of documents based on user input. The documents are not known in advance and I don't know also which categories do I have while collecting these documents. But I do know, that all the documents in the model should belong to one of the predefined categories. For example: Lets say I've collected a N documents, that belong to 3 different groups : Politics Madonna (pop-star) Science fiction I don't know what document belongs to what category, but I know that each one of my N documents belongs to one of those categories (e.g. there are no documents about, say basketball among these N docs) So, I came up with the following idea: Apply mahout clustering (for example k-mean with k=3 on these documents) This should divide the N documents to 3 groups. This should be kind of my model to learn with. I still don't know which document really belongs to which group, but at least the documents are clustered now by group Ask the user to find any document in the web that should be about 'Madonna' (I can't show to the user none of my N documents, its a restriction). Then I want to measure 'similarity' of this document and each one of 3 groups. I expect to see that the measurement for similarity between user_doc and documents in Madonna group in the model will be higher than the similarity between the user_doc and documents about politics. I've managed to produce the cluster of documents using 'Mahout in Action' book. But I don't understand how should I use Mahout to measure similarity between the 'ready' cluster group of document and one given document. I thought about rerunning the cluster with k=3 for N+1 documents with the same centroids (in terms of k-mean clustering) and see whether where the new document falls, but maybe there is any other way to do that? Is it possible to do with Mahout or my idea is conceptually wrong? (example in terms of Mahout API would be really good) Thanks a lot and sorry for a long question (couldn't describe it better) Any help is highly appreciated P.S. This is not a home-work project :)
