• Vista stuck at "Shutting down..." screen. Any way to get verbose logging?

  Hi all, My home machine has been running fine for about 3 years, no problems at all. Within the last couple of weeks it's had real trouble trying to shut down. It'll get so far and then just sit there at the "Shutting down..." screen for hours. I've left it overnight, I've tried in safe mode, all to no avail. These days, I just wait for the disk activity to finish up and then hold the power button to turn it off. Feels dirty as, especially because there's a RAID involved! The hardware itself is in pretty good shape and of decent spec; Core 2 Quad, 4GB RAM, 1TB RAID 1+0, so it's not quite like a 7 year old PC coming to end of life! In the last month, hardware hasn't changed except for a new monitor. Admittedly I haven't tried unplugging the monitor but I've never heard of that preventing a shutdown. I might give it a whirl later I guess, as a last resort. I've uninstalled old apps, done updates, checked the event log, looked in device manager, uninstalled all non-present devices, disabled various non-critical devices (imaging, audio etc), unplugged peripherals, stopped non-essential services, unplugged the network, disabled the network adapter entirely, ran chkdsk, verified my RAID, the list goes on. But not a single lead. I'm pretty stumped. It could be hardware, but I have no other evidence to suggest so; when the PC is running, it runs fine. Temperatures are good, gaming is smooth as always, disk performance is fine. Event log even makes it look like the shutdown was completed (gets to the point where the event log service stops). In fact, the PC doesn't appear to realise that I cut the power to it. So my question is, does anyone know if there is a way I can get some verbose output (or a log) from shutdown to give me some idea of what is causing the issue? I'm guessing it's stuck unloading some app/driver but it would be good to get some specifics! Unless anyone has any other ideas? I suspect a reinstall would resolve the issue, however I'm looking to get a new PC built in the next month or so, and the reinstall is going to be quite a big job so I'd rather just wait until then if it comes to that. Would still be nice to get this sorted in the mean time though. Cheers!

  what kind of logging frame work or API to use for swing applications which is used by multiple users in Unix. Is it possible to log all verbose/exception in one file per day or event one user one file per day? Since the user can open the same application with multiple instance. I also have another solution is to save the exceptions into database. But if I miss the excetpions, those will not be saved in DB. anybody has better solutions? Thank you very much!

• FileContentResult and international characters

  Hello, I am using a fileContentResult to render a file to the browser. It works well except that it throws an exception when the fileName contains international characters. I remember reading somewhere that this feature does not support international characters but I am sure there mustbe a workaround or a best practice people follow in cases the application needs to upload files in countries other than US.   How do I upload a file from a Java servlet to a location on a web server within Tomcat/webapps. I am using Commons upload. I have a location such as myserver:8080/myapp/mylocation where I want to put the files that are uploaded. I tried using getServletContext().getRealPath("/"); to find where I am and then appended that with mylocation but I get a nullpointer exception. I know I sound vague, it's because I am confused about the big picture, what are the generals steps I need to perform to make this work. Any code or links to code would be much appreciated.

• Sort NSFetchedResultsController results by user location

  I have an application that contains some Locations in Core Data, and I want to show them to the user in order of proximity to the user's location. I am using an NSFetchedResultsController to serve the locations to the Table View. I thought about creating a virtual accessor method that returns the location's distance from the user, that would be calculated using a "global" CoreLocationManager, but it crashes with reason: Terminating app due to uncaught exception 'NSInvalidArgumentException', reason: 'keypath distanceFromCurrentLocation not found in entity < NSSQLEntity Location id=4' I also give the user the option to sort alphabetically, so I would prefer it if I kept the NSFetchedResultsController, if possible. How should I do it? Thanks!

  Hi there, I want to save data to my Sony Ericsson K750i. I know the phone implements FileConnection version 1.0. The list of roots taken from FileSystemRegistry.listRoots(); returns single element named "c:/". I want to save a file.txt just about anywhere, but preferably to the memory stick attached. Unfortunately, it doesn't seem to work. It throws an IOException without any message. I tried opening the fileconnection on numerous roots like c:/, C:/, /, ./, root1/, SDCard/, CFCard/, MemoryStick/ and perhaps some more but without any luck. The exception is thrown right after this line for any of those roots: FileConnection filecon = (FileConnection) Connector.open("file:///MemoryStick/file.txt"); Please, what URL should i use?

• C# - Error if Windows Media Player is not supported

  i´m using the windows media player (Interop.WMPLib.dll & AxInterop.WMPLib.dll) in my c#-project to stream a mp3 from a server. The only problem is, if the windows media player is somehow not supported on a pc (not installed or something), my application just gives an error (no exception, just a "windows-error") and won´t start. So, is it possible to check, if the windows media player is supported? Just checking if the OS is supported will probably not help. Are there maybe some better ways to stream mp3s than with the WMP ? • When to override OnError?

  I'm looking into re-working and simplifying our error handling in an application I support. We currently have all of our pages inheriting from a base class we created, which in turn obviously inherits from System.Web.UI.Page. Within this base class, the OnError method is currently being overridden, and in turn calling MyBase.OnError, and then calling one of our custom logging methods. I don't see any benefit of overriding the OnError method, and I think it would be better to let the Application_Error method in the Global.asax take care of the unhandled exception (logging it) and then the customErrors section in the config would trigger a process to redirect the user. Looking online it looks like people override this method quite frequently, but I don't see a need to and this article from MSDN makes me think the same.

• Set Java Application's virtual machine max memory without access to VM parameters because of custom

  I'm using a Java application which allows you to import custom files. On import, these files are loaded into memory. The problem is that the files I want to import are very big, this causes an OutOfMemory exception. The crash log also informs me that the VM was started with the java parameter "-Xmx512m", I want to alter this to "-Xmx1024m" so that I got double the memory available. The problem is that this application is using it's own JRE folder and that there's a launcher written in C which is calling the jvm.dll file. In any way, java.exe or javaw.exe are never called and thus I cannot set these parameters myself (if I delete these executables it doesn't matter, can still run the application - this is not the case with the dll). So, my question is, can I set this VM parameter in an other way? I'm even willing to alter the JRE files if there is no other way.

• UINavigationController Push Crash in Distribution but not Release

  I have a UINavigationController that I will be pushing a new view onto from selection of a UITableView row. • Assembly Version Conflicts with What is Already Bound

  I'm running Microsoft LightSwitch Beta 1 and have been creating an application which has been going great, but then I tried debugging after making a few minor changes and received the following error: "Could not load file or assembly 'SW_Resources.Commom, Version=1.0.0.0, Culture=neutral, PublicKeyToken=null' or one of its dependencies. The requested assembly version conflicts with what is already bound in the app domain or specified in the manifest. (Exception from HRESULT: 0x80131053)" I've tried emptying my cache in Firefox and IE but that doesn't seem to make any difference. I did discover if I right-clicked on the Solution and changed the version from 0.1 to 1.0 then it works fine. I had changed it to 0.1 b/c I wanted to reflect that it wasn't a release version...any thoughts on how to get around this issue the right way?

• Https in java ends up with strange results

  I'm trying to illustrate to students how https is used in java. But i have the feeling my example is not really the best out there... The code works well on my windows 7: I start the server, go to https://localhost:8080/somefile.txt and i get asked to trust the certificate, and all goes well. When I try over http (before or after accepting the certificate) I just get a blank page, which is ok for me. BUT when I try the exact same thing on my windows XP: Same thing, all goes well. But then (after accepting the certificate first), I'm also able to get all the the files through http! (if I first try http before https followed by accepting the certificate, I get no answer..) I tried refreshing, hard refreshing a million times but this should not be working, right? Is there something wrong in my code? • Why can't I retrieve the entities I've just persisted?

  I've got this web service that basically queries the database and returns all persisted entities. For testing purposes, I've created a TestDataManager that persists 2 example entities after Spring context is loaded (BTW, I'm using JAX-WS, Spring, Hibernate and HSQLDB). The Hibernate invocation does not raise any exception, but the returned list is empty. The odd thing is, in TestDataManager, if I switch from sf.openSession() to sf.getCurrentSession(), I get an error message: "No Hibernate Session bound to thread, and configuration does not allow creation of non-transactional one here". What I am doing wrong here? Why is the query "not seeing" the persisted entities? Why do I need to invoke sf.openSession() on TestDataManager although it's annotated with @Transactional? I have done some tests with hibernate.current_session_context_class=thread in application.xml, but then I just switch problems in each class. I'd like not needing to manually invoke sf.openSession() and leave that for Hibernate to take care. Thanks a lot for any help!

• WPF - Listbox bound to collection acts as one item

  Hi, I have a listbox with the ItemsControl binding the ItemsSource to a readonly collection of strings. The ItemTemplate then declares the DataTemplate as a checkbox where its content is that of the name of the particular item in the collection and IsChecked bound to a property to determine whether or not the item is selected (it's just a listbox of checkboxes) This works fine with one exception - MouseOver the ListBox and it acts as if the collection of Strings is a single item; the whole box acts as if selected. This wouldn't be as much of a problem were it not for this also affecting the scrollbars where they won't get enabled - presumably because it considers the one item as being visible on the screen even though it in actual facts is x+ with only x-y showing on the screen. How do I get the listbox to act as if each individual string is its own item. I assume it acts this way because I declared a datatemplate in order to get a listbox of checkboxes?? Any help would be much appreciated!

Can someone tell me what's wrong here? And just to clarify - when I encrypt same value & salt in iOS code, the returned value is same as the value given by the converting site.

• RIA Services - Two entity models share an entity name

  I have two entity models hooked up to two different databases. However, the two databases both have a table named 'brand', for example. As such, there is a naming conflict in my models. Now, I've been able to add a namespace to each model, via Custom Tool Namespace in the model's properties, but the generated code in my Silverlight project will try to use both namespaces, and come up with this, Imports MyProject.ModelA Imports MyProject.ModelB Public ReadOnly Property brands() As EntitySet(Of brand) Get Return MyBase.EntityContainer.GetEntitySet(Of brand) End Get End Property giving me this exception: 'Error 1 'brand' is ambiguous, imported from the namespaces or types 'MyProject.ModelA,MyProject.ModelB'. Has anyone had experience with naming conflicts like this using RIA services? How did you solve it?

An ideas?
