• Using pip to install modules in python failing

  I'm having trouble installing python modules using pip. Below is the output from the command window: Note that I installed pip immediately before trying to install GDAL module. • UITableView: Juxtaposing row, header, and footer insertions/deletions

  Consider a very simple UITableView with one of two states. First state: One (overall) table footer One section containing two rows, a section header, and a section footer Second state: No table footer One section containing four rows and no section header/footer In both cases, each row is essentially one of four possible UITableViewCell objects, each containing its own UITextField. We don't even bother with reuse or caching, since we're only dealing with four known cells in this case. They've been created in an accompanying XIB, so we already have them all wired up and ready to go. Now consider we want to toggle between the two states. Sounds easy enough. Let's suppose our view controller's right bar button item provides the toggling support. We'll also track the current state with an ivar and enumeration. To be explicit for a sec, here's how one might go from state 1 to 2. (Presume we handle the bar button item's title as well.) In short, we want to clear out our table's footer view, then insert the third and fourth rows. The first two cells are the same in both cases. Only the last two appear/disappear depending on the state. The state ivar is consulted when the Table View asks for things like number of rows in a section, height for header/footer in a section, or view for header/footer in a section. This last bit is also where I'm running into trouble. Using the above logic, section 0's header/footer does not disappear. Specifically, the footer stays below the inserted rows, but the header now overlays the topmost row. If we switch back to state one, the section footer is removed, but the section header remains. How about using [self.tableView reloadData] then? Sure, why not. We take care not to use it inside the update block, per Apple's advisement, and simply add it after endUpdates. This time, good news! The section 0 header/footer disappears. :) However ... Toggling back to state one results in a most exquisite mess! The section 0 header returns, only to overlay the first row once again (instead of appear above it). The section 0 footer is placed below the last row just fine, but the overall table footer - now reinstated - overlays the section footer. Waaaaaah … now what? Just to be sure, let's toggle back to state two again. Yep, that looks fine. Coming back to state one? Yecccch. I also tried sprinkling in a few other stunts like using reloadSections:withRowAnimation:, but that only serves to make things worse. NSRange range = {0, 1}; NSIndexSet *indexSet = [NSIndexSet indexSetWithIndexesInRange:range]; ... [self.tableView reloadSections:indexSet withRowAnimation:UITableViewRowAnimationFade]; Case in point: If we invoke reloadSections... just before the end of the update block, changing to state two hides the first two rows from view, even though the space they would otherwise occupy remains. Switching back to state one returns section 0's header/footer to normal, but those first two rows remain invisible. Case two: Moving reloadSections... to just after the update block but before reloadData results in all rows becoming invisible! (I refer to the row as being invisible because, during tracing, tableView:cellForRowAtIndexPath: is returning bona-fide cell objects for those rows.) Case three: Moving reloadSections... after tableView:cellForRowAtIndexPath: brings us a bit closer, but the section 0 header/footer never returns when switching back to state one. Hmm. Perhaps it's a faux pas using both reloadSections... and reloadData, based on what I'm seeing at trace-time, which brings us to: Case four: Replacing reloadData with reloadSections... outright. All cells in state two disappear. All cells in state one remain missing as well (though the space is kept). So much for that theory. :) Tracing through the code, the cell and view objects, as well as the section heights, are all where they should be at the opportune times. They just aren't rendering sanely. So, how to crack this case? Clues welcome/appreciated!

• Should I refactor this code?

  The code is for a view debate page. The code is supposed to determine whether or not to show an add reply form to the viewing user. If the user is logged in, and the user is not the creator of the debate, then check if the user already replied to the debate. If the user did not already reply to the debate then show the form... Otherwise, Check If the user wants to edit their already existing reply by looking in the url for the reply id If any of these tests dont pass, Then I save the reason as an int and pass that to a switch statement in the view. The logic seems easy enough, but my code seems a little sloppy. Here's the code.. • Cannot set ILMerge path to console

  I install ILMerge.exe; path is C:\Program Files\Microsoft\ILMerge\ILMerge.exe. I want to set the command to the Path so I can type ilmerge anywhere to use the application. • SQL SERVER – Shrinking NDF and MDF Files – Readers’ Opinion

  Previously, I had written a blog post about SQL SERVER – Shrinking NDF and MDF Files – A Safe Operation. After that, I have written the following blog post that talks about the advantage and disadvantage of Shrinking and why one should not be Shrinking a file SQL SERVER – SHRINKFILE and TRUNCATE Log File in SQL Server 2008. On this subject, SQL Server Expert Imran Mohammed left an excellent comment. I just feel that his comment is worth a big article itself. For everybody to read his wonderful explanation, I am posting this blog post here. Thanks Imran! Shrinking Database always creates performance degradation and increases fragmentation in the database. I suggest that you keep that in mind before you start reading the following comment. If you are going to say Shrinking Database is bad and evil, here I am saying it first and loud. Now, the comment of Imran is written while keeping in mind only the process showing how the Shrinking Database Operation works. Imran has already explained his understanding and requests further explanation. I have removed the Best Practices section from Imran’s comments, as there are a few corrections. Comments from Imran - Before I explain to you the concept of Shrink Database, let us understand the concept of Database Files. When we create a new database inside the SQL Server, it is typical that SQl Server creates two physical files in the Operating System: one with .MDF Extension, and another with .LDF Extension. .MDF is called as Primary Data File. .LDF is called as Transactional Log file. If you add one or more data files to a database, the physical file that will be created in the Operating System will have an extension of .NDF, which is called as Secondary Data File; whereas, when you add one or more log files to a database, the physical file that will be created in the Operating System will have the same extension as .LDF. The questions now are, “Why does a new data file have a different extension (.NDF)?”, “Why is it called as a secondary data file?” and, “Why is .MDF file called as a primary data file?” Answers: Note: The following explanation is based on my limited knowledge of SQL Server, so experts please do comment. A data file with a .MDF extension is called a Primary Data File, and the reason behind it is that it contains Database Catalogs. Catalogs mean Meta Data. Meta Data is “Data about Data”. An example for Meta Data includes system objects that store information about other objects, except the data stored by the users. sysobjects stores information about all objects in that database. sysindexes stores information about all indexes and rows of every table in that database. syscolumns stores information about all columns that each table has in that database. sysusers stores how many users that database has. Although Meta Data stores information about other objects, it is not the transactional data that a user enters; rather, it’s a system data about the data. Because Primary Data File (.MDF) contains important information about the database, it is treated as a special file. It is given the name Primary Data file because it contains the Database Catalogs. This file is present in the Primary File Group. You can always create additional objects (Tables, indexes etc.) in the Primary data file (This file is present in the Primary File group), by mentioning that you want to create this object under the Primary File Group. Any additional data file that you add to the database will have only transactional data but no Meta Data, so that’s why it is called as the Secondary Data File. It is given the extension name .NDF so that the user can easily identify whether a specific data file is a Primary Data File or a Secondary Data File(s). There are many advantages of storing data in different files that are under different file groups. You can put your read only in the tables in one file (file group) and read-write tables in another file (file group) and take a backup of only the file group that has read the write data, so that you can avoid taking the backup of a read-only data that cannot be altered. Creating additional files in different physical hard disks also improves I/O performance. A real-time scenario where we use Files could be this one: Let’s say you have created a database called MYDB in the D-Drive which has a 50 GB space. You also have 1 Database File (.MDF) and 1 Log File on D-Drive and suppose that all of that 50 GB space has been used up and you do not have any free space left but you still want to add an additional space to the database. One easy option would be to add one more physical hard disk to the server, add new data file to MYDB database and create this new data file in a new hard disk then move some of the objects from one file to another, and put the file group under which you added new file as default File group, so that any new object that is created gets into the new files, unless specified. Now that we got a basic idea of what data files are, what type of data they store and why they are named the way they are, let’s move on to the next topic, Shrinking. First of all, I disagree with the Microsoft terminology for naming this feature as “Shrinking”. Shrinking, in regular terms, means to reduce the size of a file by means of compressing it. BUT in SQL Server, Shrinking DOES NOT mean compressing. Shrinking in SQL Server means to remove an empty space from database files and release the empty space either to the Operating System or to SQL Server. Let’s examine this through an example. Let’s say you have a database “MYDB” with a size of 50 GB that has a free space of about 20 GB, which means 30GB in the database is filled with data and the 20 GB of space is free in the database because it is not currently utilized by the SQL Server (Database); it is reserved and not yet in use. If you choose to shrink the database and to release an empty space to Operating System, and MIND YOU, you can only shrink the database size to 30 GB (in our example). You cannot shrink the database to a size less than what is filled with data. So, if you have a database that is full and has no empty space in the data file and log file (you don’t have an extra disk space to set Auto growth option ON), YOU CANNOT issue the SHRINK Database/File command, because of two reasons: There is no empty space to be released because the Shrink command does not compress the database; it only removes the empty space from the database files and there is no empty space. Remember, the Shrink command is a logged operation. When we perform the Shrink operation, this information is logged in the log file. If there is no empty space in the log file, SQL Server cannot write to the log file and you cannot shrink a database. Now answering your questions: (1) Q: What are the USEDPAGES & ESTIMATEDPAGES that appear on the Results Pane after using the DBCC SHRINKDATABASE (NorthWind, 10) ? A: According to Books Online (For SQL Server 2000): UsedPages: the number of 8-KB pages currently used by the file. EstimatedPages: the number of 8-KB pages that SQL Server estimates the file could be shrunk down to. Important Note: Before asking any question, make sure you go through Books Online or search on the Google once. The reasons for doing so have many advantages: 1. If someone else already has had this question before, chances that it is already answered are more than 50 %. 2. This reduces your waiting time for the answer. (2) Q: What is the difference between Shrinking the Database using DBCC command like the one above & shrinking it from the Enterprise Manager Console by Right-Clicking the database, going to TASKS & then selecting SHRINK Option, on a SQL Server 2000 environment? A: As far as my knowledge goes, there is no difference, both will work the same way, one advantage of using this command from query analyzer is, your console won’t be freezed. You can do perform your regular activities using Enterprise Manager. (3) Q: What is this .NDF file that is discussed above? I have never heard of it. What is it used for? Is it used by end-users, DBAs or the SERVER/SYSTEM itself? A: .NDF File is a secondary data file. You never heard of it because when database is created, SQL Server creates database by default with only 1 data file (.MDF) and 1 log file (.LDF) or however your model database has been setup, because a model database is a template used every time you create a new database using the CREATE DATABASE Command. Unless you have added an extra data file, you will not see it. This file is used by the SQL Server to store data which are saved by the users. Hope this information helps. • Postfix - suspend domain from which deferred status was received?

  Is there a possibility to make Postfix stop trying (for a period of time) to send emails to a domain from which it received a deferred response? Currently my Postfix goes through each address in the queue. Please see the below example. At 09:48:32 the status=deferred appears. After this Postfix should stop trying to send stuff to the yahoo.com domain. • Host AngularJS (Html5Mode) in ASP.NET vNext

Also it's cross platform which means I can host ASP.NET on Windows, Linux and OS X.   If you are following my blog you should knew that I'm currently working on a project which uses ASP.NET WebAPI, SignalR and AngularJS. Currently the AngularJS part is hosted by Express in Node.js while WebAPI and SignalR are hosted in ASP.NET. I was looking for a solution to host all of them in one platform so that my SignalR can utilize WebSocket. Currently AngularJS and SignalR are hosted in the same domain but different port so it has to use ServerSendEvent. It can be upgraded to WebSocket if I host both of them in the same port.   Host AngularJS in ASP.NET vNext Static File Middleware ASP.NET vNext utilizes middleware pattern to register feature it uses, which is very similar as Express in Node.js. Since AngularJS is a pure client side framework in theory what I need to do is to use ASP.NET vNext as a static file server. This is very easy as there's a build-in middleware shipped alone with ASP.NET vNext. Finally, use "k web" to start the application which will be a static file server on "app" sub folder in the local 22222 port.   Support AngularJS Html5Mode AngularJS works well in previous demo. But you will note that there is a "#" in the browser address. This is because by default AngularJS adds "#" next to its entry page so ensure all request will be handled by this entry page. For example, in this case my entry page is "index.html", so when I clicked "View 1" in the page the address will be changed to "/#/view1" which means it still tell the web server I'm still looking for "index.html". This works, but makes the address looks ugly. Hence AngularJS introduces a feature called Html5Mode, which will get rid off the annoying "#" from the address bar. But the problem is, if we hit F5 the browser will be turn to blank. This is because in this mode the browser told the web server I want static file named "view1" but there's no file on the server. So underlying our web server, which is built by ASP.NET vNext, responded 404. To fix this problem we need to create our own ASP.NET vNext middleware. What it needs to do is firstly try to respond the static file request with the default StaticFileMiddleware. The code below is just for demo purpose. I just tried to load "index.html" in all cases once the StaticFileMiddleware returned 404. I also demonstrated how to extend ASP.NET vNext, so that it supports AngularJS Html5Mode. • No Preview Images in File Open Dialogs on Windows 7

  I’ve been updating some file uploader code in my photoalbum today and while I was working with the uploader I noticed that the File Open dialog using Silverlight that handles the file selections didn’t allow me to ever see an image preview for image files. It sure would be nice if I could preview the images I’m about to upload before selecting them from a list. Here’s what my list looked like: This is the Medium Icon view, but regardless of the views available including Content view only icons are showing up. Silverlight uses the standard Windows File Open Dialog so it uses all the same settings that apply to Explorer when displaying content. It turns out that the Customization options in particular are the problem here. Specifically the Always show icons, never thumbnails option: I had this option checked initially, because it’s one of the defenses against runaway random Explorer views that never stay set at my preferences. Alas, while this setting affects Explorer views apparently it also affects all dialog based views in the same way. Unchecking the option above brings back full thumbnailing for all content and icon views. Here’s the same Medium Icon view after turning the option off: which obviously works a whole lot better for selection of images. The bummer of this is that it’s not controllable at the dialog level – at least not in Silverlight. Dialogs obviously have different requirements than what you see in Explorer so the global configuration is a bit extreme especially when there are no overrides on the dialog interface. Certainly for Silverlight the ability to have previews is a key feature for many applications since it will be dealing with lots of media content most likely. Hope this helps somebody out. • Unable to install Eclipse manually

  I have just started Linux. I have a SBC(Atom processor) on which I have installed Ubuntu 12.04 and now I am trying to install Fortran IDE. For which I have learnt that I need to install OpenJDK first, then Eclipse Juno and at last the Phortran plugin for Eclipse. I have no Internet access so I had follow the below steps for manual installation. First download the eclipse tar.gz package (downloaded: eclipse-parallel-juno-linux-gtk.tar). • How to Load commands into your powershell profile to run on starting powershell

  Hi, I have found a way to load exchange 2010 powershell into powershell running on a windows xp workstation, however there are a few commands that need to run. I was wondering how I could load them into a profile somehow. These are the commands that I need to run before I can do any of the exchange things such as Get-Mailbox. COMMAND 1 $session = New-PSSession -Configurationname Microsoft.Exchange –ConnectionUri http://servername/powershell -Credential $user (it prompts you for a username and p/word then the next command) COMMAND 2 Import-PSSession $session Then I am able to run exchange 2010 commands such as Get-Mailbox. Anyway I can load these so that when I click on the powershell shortcut they preload the importing of exchange commands. Thanks

• New Walkthrough Capability in AutoVue 20

  New in AutoVue 20 is the capability to view a 3D model of a building from the inside - this is a very powerful tool for anyone who needs to work with models of plants, refineries, or other buildings. All of the standard AutoVue functionality is available, so you can click on any part of the building to get attribute data, manipulate the view, do measurement, etc. For example, in the image below we've made the Architectural model (Walls, Floors, etc.) transparent, but left the electrical and mechanical models opaque, so it's easy to see where the wires and piping run behind the walls. Additionally you can bring together different files and different types of files, using our digital mockup capability - in the image below the heating and air conditioning sytem on the left came from one file, and the electrical box on the right came from another wile, and the model of the room came from yet a third file, but with everything brought together into AutoVue you can do things like use our measurement capability to ensure there's enough space to get maintenance equipment down the hallway, before the building is even built.   I got "IOError: [Errno 32] Broken pipe" while writing files in linux. I am using python to read each line a of csv file and then write into a database table. My code is f = open(path,'r') command = command to connect to database p = Popen(command, shell=True, stdin=PIPE, stdout=PIPE, stderr=PIPE, env=env) query = " COPY myTable( id, name, address) FROM STDIN WITH DELIMITER ';' CSV QUOTE '"'; " p.stdin.write(query.encode('ascii')) *-->(Here exactly I got the error, p.stdin.write(query.encode('ascii')) IOError: [Errno 32] Broken pipe )* So when I run this program in linux, I got error "IOError: [Errno 32] Broken pipe" . However this works fine when I run in windows7. Do I need to do some configuration in Linux sever? Any suggestions will be appreciated. Thank you.

• Permission denied when using mv in Windows 7 Cygwin

  I have Cygwin installed on Windows 7 in a windows domain sign-on environment. I can run most typical commands without issue, but I cannot for the life of me use the "mv" command to move or rename files, regardless of the file or directory. I can copy and create files without issue. +-[12:27:57]-[mbutl2@MYHOSTNAME] +--> tmp $ >> pwd /tmp +-[12:27:58]-[mbutl2@MYHOSTNAME] +--> tmp $ >> touch test.txt +-[12:28:02]-[mbutl2@MYHOSTNAME] +--> tmp $ >> mv test.txt hello -bash: /usr/bin/mv: Permission denied I have already tried running Cygwin terminal as Administrator and the problem is the same. I'm open to workarounds, such as trying another exe for moving files and redirecting the mv command to it. Moving files works in the Windows Command Prompt.
