• Disable RAID Controller

  I have some decent HP Proliants server that come with "HP Smart Array P410i Controller" enabled, I am using these boxes to set up a Hadoop cluster and I know, RAID is for sure a no-no for Hadoop since the application itself will take care of data redundancy and extra intelligence provided by RAID won't be helpful and might turn down the performance. I tried to disable the devices at the BIOS and the box cannot even access the disk afterwards. So I am assuming the controller is sitting between disks and mother board, and we have to turn it on and configure it to "level0" or something like that. I am wondering what should I do to "disable" the RAID functionality so it will fit into the Hadoop environment.

• ssh Prompts For Password After Account Unlocked - Despite ssh key?

  Here's what happened: I set up ssh key so that user could ssh from A to B without a password. I got user's password wrong in some other context too many times, and user's account got locked out. (IT uses Active Directory here) IT unlocked the account. Concurrent to the unlocking, a script was running, calling something like ssh user@B some-health-check-command every 5 seconds or so -- which seemed to work fine before I caused user to get locked out in step 2. IT reports user reliably gets locked out a short time after each unlock attempt. I thought the ssh key would allow ssh user@B some-command as long as the account is not locked. But it behaves as if, when user gets unlocked, B suddenly asks for a password and since my command repeatedly runs without supplying a password, the account gets locked out after 5 attempts. Account cannot be accessed at this time. Please contact your system administrator. My questions are... Is that what's happening? Or: what's happening? More importantly: How can I reconfigure things such that my script doesn't cause problems? Can I accomplish what I want without having to install Expect? (I don't know if I have permission to do so) Other notes: Not using ssh-agent currently. The ssh command is running on our Jenkins master, a linux box. A and B are Mac OS X. user is managed in Active Directory and normally can sign into all three machines. Other than these things and the ssh key I set up, everything else has the default configuration as far as I know.

• Booting Ubuntu as VM with KVM on Ubuntu 12.04

  I am trying to boot my very first VM using KVM. I have Ubuntu 12.04 installed, i made sure the BIOS had the right virtualization flag enabled for intel processor by running kvm-ok. I have researched this on google and all the instructions that i have found so far are outdated. for e.g. most instructions talk about booting a virtual machine with the following commands qemu-img create -f qcow2 foo.img 100G --- create a virtual disk for your VM kvm --name foo -m 1024 -hda foo.img -cdrom whatever.iso -boot d -- This runs kvm. This command line is incomplete. First you need to be root to run this. Second- it is missing option for the video device. When you run this command you get the following error "Could not initialize SDL(No available video device) - exiting" Googled this error and looked it up on stackover flow http://stackoverflow.com/questions/4841908/sdl-init-failure-reason-is-no-available-video-device The answer provided here does not work on Ubuntu 12.04 Googled this problem further and found out that i need to specify a video device so I finally ran the following command sudo kvm --name mymachine -m 8096 -hda myimage.img --cdrom ubuntu.iso -boot d -vga cirruss -k en-us -vmc :0 This was after I had created the myimage.img image on the drive. Now this command does not give me an error but it just hangs. Does anyone have clear instructions on how to run a VM using KVM on Ubuntu?

• Linux bonded Interfaces hanging periodically

  I've several hosts that are showing problems with connectivity. When working from the command line, for example, typing is frozen for a second or so, then recovers - then it does it again. The most egregious example host would freeze (input) for 15-30 seconds, then recover and go out 5 seconds later. Switching cables didn't do anything - but removing one of the physical cables caused everything to clear up instantly (which why I think this is a network problem). Looking at the network I couldn't see any packets floating that would explain this. These ethernet interfaces (Gigabit Dell) were working normally previously, but since we moved the systems - and put them on a new set of switches - this has been a problem on multiple theoretically identically-configured hosts. The original switches were an HP Procurve 1810-24G and an HP Procurve 1800-24G connected with LLDP; the new switches are both Cisco SG 200-26, which I understand are rebranded Linksys switches. Is this caused by a problem with the switches? Is it the switch configurations? Are the Cisco switches incapable of handling this? I don't see where the configuration is located; I searched the usual /etc/sysconfig/network/devices but there's nothing in there about options (like mii polling) and nothing about the method of balancing the two. Searching scripts, I can't find anything in /etc/init.d/network either. The hosts are almost all Red Hat Enterprise Linux 5.x systems (5.6, 5.7) but some are Ubuntu Server 10.04.3 Lucid Lynx. I need help with both if it comes to that. UPDATE: We're also seeing some problems with servers on the original switches. The HP switches and the Cisco switches are also interconnected (temporarily); there is a cable run from one switch to the next. Pings on any of these hosts show about one ICMP packet out of every 5-6 getting dropped (timed out). Could there be an interaction between the two switches? Oh, and the hosts are using bonding with Balance-RR as the method.

• Network Sharing Issues

  I have two computers I want to have on a network share together (so the laptop can print through the desktop's printer). These are both connected to the same router. (One wired and one wireless) And they both have the same workgroup name. However, when I type "net view" in the command prompt, the only computer that shows up is the computer I type the command into. How do I get these computers to be shared with each other? Update: The tower is running Windows XP, the Laptop is running Windows 7. I have disabled the Firewall on both until I get this set up. Update 2: Typing the command net view on my desktop is acting very strangely. Noe sometimes it only shows itself on the list of computers, sometimes it shows itself and the laptop and sometimes it doesn't work at all and displays system error 6118. I typed net view into the command prompt on the Windows 7 laptop and both computers showed up, so I went to connect to the desktop from the laptop and it said the dekptop could not be found, even though it is showing up int he list of shared computers. • Ubuntu karmic 9.10 Live image on USB - not working.

  This is my configuration 4GB pendrive, HP ubuntu-9.10-desktop-i386 image file for live USB install pendrivelinux (u910p) and ubetbootin (unetbootin.sourceforge.net) machine T61 Earlier I have installed ubuntu live image using above two mentioned utilities, numerous times. But, on a 2gb kingston flash-drive. Today, i am trying to install the live-image on 4gb HP flash-drive. Both the utilities install, i can see the files in the drive, even the wubi-installer is working, it say press "reboot" to boot in live-ubuntu. But, when i press "reboot" it does not reboot my win7. Now, when i reboot, select boot-usb in bios, it say "no boot record". I am making my usb bootable, using the utility, even then nothing is working out. Did this a few times. Is 4GB usb a prob, does anyone knows how to partition my usb in 2-2gb and install it on one partition, and then use the live image. Is it possible.

• How do I start the Workstation Service so I can use `net use`?

  I have a Windows 7 machine that logs into a domain. The machine can net view and see the different shares, but when I try to use, net use * \\name\share, I get an error stating that the service is not started. Yet when I issue a net start, it states the service is already started. My other win7 machines work fine; they can see and use any of the shares. Is there a security setting that needs to be disabled or enabled? I really need to get this working, and I have no other ideas as the other machines have no problem accessing the shares on different systems. The error I am getting is , "The Workstation Service Has Not Been Started", but like I said other machines can connect fine, and when I issue a, "net start workstation", it states the service is already started. In addition the error number I am receiving is 2138. UPDATE: On the machine that is having issues. From the troubled machine if I issue a Net View \\name I can see all the shares on the machine I want to connect to. When I try to net use * \\name\sharename I get the error The Workstation service has not started. I have set both settings sc config lanmanworkstation start = auto and sc config lanmanserver start = auto on the Windows7 computer that is having issues. I have rebooted the computer and still no dice. I can net view any computer on the network and see all shares, but I cannot access any of the shares in which I can see. In the registry under the HKLM\System\CurrentControlSet\Services Both LanmanServer and LanmanWorkstation start is set to 2. Screen capture of net use and view: The Services: This is really weird. • Window 7 not recognizing printer for driver (re)installation

  OK I am having this printer problem. I had a user delete her printer. Please don't ask, I don't know. She is using an HP deskjet 6940 printer, and for her desktop she has an HP dx2400, with Windows 7. When I plug in the USB cable it should install the new drivers, but it does not. I believe you guys don't need to know my network setup. I could be wrong. If you guys here at serverfault could help that will be great. :)

• How do I enable Ubuntu Gnome system tools

  I am running Ubuntu 10 with Gnome 2.30.2. This is a VMWare workstation image provided by another company that I do not have support in this regard. I am trying to access the graphical tools for configuring the network, users, and services but the System-Administration menu does not have these options listed. The main issue I am trying to solve is to correct the problems with the gnome menu options and network settings I have the gnome-system-tools package installed, and I am unable to run command-line versions of the tools, such as nm-applet (I get no GUI if I run that command, the process is running in the background). I realize that I can perform many tasks command-line, but I would like to use the GUI for administrative functions as I am not overly proficient for all command for restarting services and setting a static IP with a specific gateway. Further, I can run gnome-nettool, but I cannot change the IP, I can only see my network card. nm-connection-editor does not show any network cards that I can configure to change the IP. Currently, I am getting a DHCP through my NAT in VMWare, I want to set it to a specific IP address though. • Can I use dis-similar HW for Win2008r2 DFS-R

  The setup: Windows 2008R2 Ent on two machines. The roles on each server will include File Servers and DC's. The machines come from two different vendors (Dell/HP) The Dell is an Athlon and the HP is an Intel. Both have roughly the same speed CPU and 8GB of RAM. They have different Raid controllers, and more or less the same amount of disk space (roughly 6TB.) Can the servers use different types of hardware? Is there any documentation about this? The last question I have is about the network. Can DFS-R be forced to use a differen subnet from the regular network?

• Where can I find a good, tab-less privacy filter for my monitor?

  Hi, I have an ASUS laptop with a 14" monitor (12" by 7" to be more specific), and I've been looking for a decent privacy filter that I can use with for, yet I couldn't find any. The problem with the filters I've found is that they all use those ugly "tabs" that you have to stick on the sides of your monitor in order to slip the filter in. I'm looking for ones that are like HP privacy filter, where parts of it goes under the frame of the monitor to hold it in place. Too bad HP doesn't sell filters that fit my screen. So, any idea where I can get a good privacy filter? Your help is so much appreciated

• How to automatically start VM created by virt-manager?

  I have created a virtual machine with virt-manager that runs on kvm/qemu. The machine works well when started through virt-manager. However, I would like to be able to start and stop the VM through a script in init.d, so that it comes up and down along with the host. I need to have virt-manager show that the machine is running, and to be able to connect to its console through there. When I use the command line that is produced by running ps -eaf | grep kvm after starting the vm through virt-manager, I get some console messages about redirected character devices, but the machine does start and runs properly. However, I do not get any indication from virt-manager that it has started. How can I modify the command line to get virt-manager to pick up the running VM? Is there anything else about the command line that should change when starting outside of virt-manager? • Portable Display doesn't work anymore

  My USB portable monitor will not work since I installed the hard drive onto an HP laptop. I have installed all the new hardware drivers and do not have any more device issues in device manager view. My old laptop was a lenovo. The new one is an HP. The system seems to recognize devices that I connect via, usb but the portable display still does not show anything on the screen. It is probably a conflict in the registry but I'm not sure how to find it and the Power User does not have the luxury of letting me troubleshoot for hours to isolate the problem.

• How to increase the volume gain when viewing online flash video?

  When watching online Flash videos on Youtube, Dailymotion, etc... sometimes the videos are recorded at low volume. The thing is that, I have a HP Notebook with good enough audio volume, but when I watch these "low volume" videos the sound level is really low, even when I have the volume at 100%. So I am looking for a way to increase the volume gain (like VLC player where you can increase it to 200%), BUT while watching it live on Youtube... that is, I don't want to download the video on my PC. Is there a software that can do that? Maybe an advanced flash video player that integrates to browser? or some other software to increase the volume gain overall on my laptop? My Specs: HP Pavilion Notebook, Audio: IDT High Definition Audio CODEC (integrated), Vista 64-bit, 4 GB RAM, etc.....

• Hardware question re Hauppauge WinTV-HVR 900 HD video/tv capture unit used with laptop with HDMI output laptop HDMI connection

  I've ordered a Hauppauge WinTV-HVR 900 HD video/tv capture unit. It is mainly for use with my HP desktop running Windows 7 Professional, but I will want to use it occasionally with my partner's HP laptop running Vista Home Premium. The latter has an HDMI output which works perfectly with my LG 42" LCD TV, enabling display of BBC iPlayer and other catchup services. Will the live or recorded HD signal from the WinTV-HVR 900 HD connected to the laptop's USB input be output on the laptop's HDMI socket as HD? Come to that, will SD content be output? The reason I ask is that I had a problem with a Pinnacle unit which displayed OK on the laptop's screen but not on the TV screen (which did display all the normal Windows material). I've tried the Hauppage website, but it doesn't even acknowledge the existence of the WinTV-HVR 900 HD!

• Why Windows Media Center (Vista 32-bit) unable to record TV Series?

  I can record individual shows just fine, but trying to setup the recording of a Series throws an error (something like, "unable to schedule, try restarting Media Center", pops up in the bottom right of the screen). Trying to access the "Other Showings" menu causes Media Center to crash ("check for a solution online" dialog comes up). The machine is a fresh reinstall of 32-bit Windows Vista from the HP recovery CDs, plus all Microsoft updates and service packs. Hardware: HP s3220n, AMD X2 5000+, 2GB RAM, 300GB free space on disk. Media Center came bundled. The "Media Center update for Vista" failed to install (it says, not appropriate for my computer). Any ideas? Thanks

• Plesk Uninstall Memory issue

  I am trying to uninstall plesk from my VPS by running following command: yum remove sw-* psa-* plesk-* when i run this command i get following error: Running rpm_check_debug Running Transaction Test memory alloc (4 bytes) returned NULL. First time when i run above command, this mem alloc (4 bytes) was very big number like (67864987). then i googled it, got some clear/ulimit commands. executed them. rebooted my system. stopped all process and executed this command again. but still getting 4 byte issue. dont know how to get rid of it. I also tried ulimit after reboot but no success and Yes. • Windows backups to VM Esxi

  I'm very new to ESXi, so apologies if this is a silly question. I have ESXi 5.1 running running on HP Proliant Microserver with internal LUNs RAIDed with HP P410 Smart Array card. I have 2 Windows Server 2012 VMs running as Domain controllers. These are being backed-up up with GhettoVCB to a dedicated datastore hosted on LUNs on a eSata external device. I have several Windows 8 & 7 PC's connected to this domain. I want to back up these Windows PCs, via the built in backup software, ideally to the external eSata device as well. What do I need to do to have the Windows PC's see the datastore? I assume I could create a VM for FreeNas or something, or share out the datastore via one of the Windows Server 2012 VMs. Both those options seem a little bit of an over kill?

• ESXI 4.0 Slow response in opening anything accross the network on a Virtual Server running Win2008

  Hi I recently installed a HP ML350G6 Server with Windows Small Business Server 200864bit, Exchange 2007. The server was running fantastically and we transferred all user data onto the new server and no problems for 2 weeks! We then installed SQL2008 and transferred the accounts package onto the server and this is where the problems started. Users are now complaining to open a work document can take 2 minutes and the same with regard to anything else. The server itself seems fine, the virtual server seems fine! No disk performance problems (doesn't go above 50% unless i really copy lots of things), no memory, (12Gb only using 7Gb) cpu (usage is low average about 15%) etc on both the VM and in Windows Task manager. I have made sure disk caching is enabled on the raid controller (which made no difference). Network cards are running 1Gb and plugged into HP GB switch. Please help!

• Unable to read DVD on laptop

  I have a DVD disk that I created on an HP laptop. I believe it was setup to be accessed as a USB device. I do not have that laptop any longer and I still would like to access the files on that DVD from my current DELL laptop but it can not open the disk. My guess, the session nwas not closed on the disk and for some reason the new laptop can not read it. My question is, is there any way I can access the files using new laptop, of do I need to find similar HP to try to access the files and possibly close the session? Are there any utilities out there that could help me? Thanks.

  Is there any service available where you simply list the services, programs and versions you use, and when some CVE comes out about it, you automatically get alerted? Also, is there any other place to look for this kind of information. Do some people release security vulnerabilities to other places than CVE? So in general, how do you guys keep up to date with what might be vulnerable in your infrastructure? Edit: Since I've been asked, we are a Unix shop with mostly Red Hat and some HP-UX. I would still prefer a high level solution which are OS independent. What happens if we use software versions which are not in the official repositories of Red Hat/HP/... or simply not supported by them.

• Java process eating CPU; Why?

  I have a Linux server which I have installed Java on. Sometimes, and only sometimes when a large nr of visitors visit my website, the site hangs. When I open the terminal and enter the "top" command to see whats going on, I can see that "Java" process is eating CPU! Like 400%. I have also tried ps aux command, and can see that the command is from usr/bin/java I have little experience in troubleshooting this kind of things, so I turn to you guys for help. I have a java container installed (Jetty) which I must have in order to use SOLR (search engine) which is integrated into my website. I can start and stop SOLR by: etc/init.d/solr stop But this didn't remove the java process from the "Top" command. Still java was eating 400% CPU. Is there other methods to restart java only? This has happened twice to me, and each time I have now restarted my entire servers and everithing is fine. If you need more input let me know! Thanks
