• Finding a good University [closed]

  I've currently been searching for good Universities to study Software Engineering or Computer Science at. The three Universities I've chosen so far are: Brighton University (This is my main pick so far) Plymouth Uni Manchester Metropolitan I would just like to know from people who have actually studied at these places to see if there all that there cracked up to be and I'm not going to be wasting up to four years of my life with a course that isn't very well taught. Would love to hear from people and if there are any Universities in the UK that you are/have studied at and are finding really good for learning Programming that would be nice too. Thanks!

• DrRacket icon doesnt work?

  I installed DrRacket from the Ubuntu Software Center. All went well and an icon appeared however nothing happened when I clicked the icon so I removed it. Then went to the Developer website and downloaded full-5.3.0.21-bin-x86_64-linux-debian-squeeze.sh. I installed this via Terminal with sudo apt-get install racket. The DrRacket icon came back in Dash Home but again clicking it nothing appears to happen. How do I start DrRacket? I am running Ubuntu 12.04 LTS dual boot on a 64 bit Dell

• Why is (Ogg) Vorbis not automatically supported by Windows?

  Vorbis was never threatened by MPEG LA, so it is undoubtedly completely patent free. (MPEG LA never misses a chance to spread patent FUD) Windows supports mp3, so it isn’t because they want to push their crappy wma. The GPL allows distribution alongside commercial products, and Even if they fear to ship GPL software, they can still load it automatically, like they do with XviD So why can’t a windows customer not simply drop a ogg vorbis file into his/her music library and listen to it via WMP? PS: To counter misconceptions: They already download the GPL’d XviD codec on demand, so they already have 99% of what it takes to do the same with Vorbis. It would take me about 5 minutes to do this, if I were familiar with the WMP code base and directshow filter system. PSS: I was told to ask this here rather than on stackoverflow, so i do.

  I am choosing a license for my open source software and I've learned about GPL, EBMS and BSD. GPL seems to be most popular one. The problems are: Would anybody kindly name a few popular opensource licenses? Since I do not see any EBMS BSD license is popular.   When I try to start Ubuntu one (after the registration) I receive the this error. Plus it keeps saying "loading.." I am using Ubuntu 11.10 freshly installed. I've try to reinstall ubuntuone after remove them from "ubuntu software center" and remove all the entri ubuntuone* from synaptic. Only the last slice of the ubuntu one control panel seems responding and display "Value could not be retrieved. (ValueError: cannot convert float NaN to integer)". • Unrecognized Display

  I just installed a fresh copy of Ubuntu 12.04, and before I installed drivers, I was able to get my two monitor setup working just fine. However, after updating all my drivers and installing all the recommended software, my second display is no longer detected. My main display is called "Laptop" (which it was detected as the monitor name previously), but it is the only display listed. I tried to detect displays, nothing happened. The monitor is plugged in, and should be working fine - after all, it just was. How can I fix the problem of Ubuntu not listing my second monitor in the display settings?

  After I installed some updates I restarted my computer. Some days later I wanted to check for updates because the update-manager shows me the following: "The packet information has been updated last 24 days ago." and a window appeared. They have been ignored, or old ones used instead. But my Internet connection works fine. I downloaded and installed and run the banish404 software and it does not work.   I made a game, and I am currently making a game engine. I want them both to be completely free and open source. What license should I choose? I was reading a bit on GPL, but that seems to be more suited for system code and libraries, AFAIK, as it doesn't permit the use of code for proprietorial software - which, in turn, implies that the code can be used in the first place. I can see that, obviously, game engines can be considered libraries, and therefor be used, but what about game code? Is there an alternative to GPL?

• Play videos with libwebkit in Ubuntu 11.10 server

  I'm using libwebkit (with python-webkit) to render a page that plays a video. This application works fine in a Ubuntu 11.04 Desktop, Nvidia card and lots of libraries and software installed, but in a fresh Ubuntu 11.10 Server with intel 82945G/GZ card the video does not play. I guess either some codec package is missing or it's a driver problem. What could be missing for this to play? I'm trying with this video: http://video.eustasy.co.uk/480/ EDIT: doesn't look like a driver problem. With chromium I can play the video, but with libwebkit + python-webkit the video just shows the first frame and doesn't play. Any hints on what package could be missing? SOLVED: apparently it had to do with lack of audio. While chrome would play the video with no sound, libwebkit wouldn't start video. Adding user to audio and video groups solved the problem.

• How can I make sure my website will be available during a presentation?

  I have an online presentation to do next week and I have it all ready to go. The website is HTML and CSS only (no DB), and currently resides on my shared hosting account. Now, although my shared hosting is (relatively) reliable, I have noticed that recently they have been making some changes and my website has been unavailable at times. I don't want this to happen to me on the morning of my presentation, so I am asking what is the best way to prepare for such a thing? My domain is www.presentation.mydomain.com and I would like to keep this if possible (even if issues arise). I have been thinking of a few alternatives: Host my site on two different domains or servers (but what about the domain name?) Have a portable XAMPP version on a USB stick (again, domain name?) Possible failover site/location Update: The presentation will be carried out on their laptop, not mine. So I am unable to install any software.

• Can you change a license once you pick one?

  I am working on a product that I don't feel is completely ready but I have a set of users that are very interested in using it now as "alpha" testers. I would like to give them the product now for free as "alpha" testers, but I would like to later license the software. Is this possible? Can anyone point me to any links/books/articles/etc? Thanks. EDIT: Due to the lack of my clarity and the reponses to the question I thought I should add this statement. I haven't decided if I am going to close-source or open-source this project yet. The user base that wants to get their hands on it now has kind of surprised me and I was concerned about what my options are as far as being able to give it to them now as open-source and later change to closed-source, or even vice versa. More often not - and this is by design - those discussions are stewarded by community volunteers, many of whom are Oracle ACEs (who in fact earned their ACE stripes that way). • Handling array passed to object at creation

  When creating my object I pass it an array of a row from my database. (everything in the array we will need, disregarding unnecessary elements at sql query level) When I need to access certain array elements from within my class, I do so like $this->row['element'] However, As I continue development, I sometimes forget what exactly is in this passed array.(this itself doesn't seem good) I am wondering if their is a professional approach to dealing with this, Or am I the only one who has these "I wonder whats in the array" thoughts. One approach to tackling this could be that when we originally pass the array, in the constructor, we assign each element of the array to its own variable, but is this considered professional practice? Additionally by doing this, we could make those variables constants, in a attempt at immutability. Overall I am trying to adhere to good software craftsmanship. Regards.

• Will learning programming be as fundamental as learning reading/writing to the kids of the future?

  It seems I encounter more and more economists, scientists, and miscellaneous other professionals that have jobs that involve programming on some level. More and more, the jobs that my peers have in many many technical professions involve at least some simple scripting if not something more involved. It seems it used to be that "software engineer" was a distinct profession, now its becoming just another skill like writing -- something that any serious technical professional should be able to use for their job. I see a future where programming is essential to getting any kind of technical/mathematical job. Extrapolating on my anecdotal view of my colleagues... Will the kids of the future become literate in programming in the same way they become readers/writers? Will it become so fundamental to our economy and society that it will be taught at an early age? Will interacting with computers be as important as interacting with other people?
