• mysql settings - using the available resources

  I've got a lot of processing work I need to run on a mysql server. I've installed mysql 5.1.45-community on a Win 2007 64bit. Its running on a xenon, 3ghz 6 processors with 8 gig ram. It doesn't seem to matter what queries I run (or the number I run at the same time), when I look in task manager, I'll see one processor is out at 100%. The other 5 are idol. Memory is static at 1.54 gig. When I installed mysql, I used the wizard and selected the default "server" (not workstation) option. I feel like I should be getting more bang for my buck. Is there something else I should be monitoring or something I should change to use the other system resources???

• Unlocking AMD Phenom II X2 550 Black Edition cores - what are the risks?

  I've got the above mentioned CPU and a GigaByte GA-MA790XT-UD4P motherboard, which should be capable of unlocking the extra two cores - if I'm lucky and they're not faulty. The Internet is full of instructions on how to do that. What I don't have is spare money to buy new hardware if I brick something. What are the risks when attempting to do this? Is it completely safe, or can I be left with an expensive pile of junk? What should I keep in mind when doing so? Bigger cooler maybe (I'm running with the default box cooler)? Should I lower the frequencies too? I've never done any OC before.

  I'm want install Xen Server 6.2 though ipxe, I tried different configurations, no luck making to work until now. I found some may example to boot from pxe using TFTP server, and here is an example: default xenserver-auto label xenserver-auto kernel mboot.c32 append xenserver/xen.gz dom0_max_vcpus=1-2 dom0_mem=752M,max:752M com1=115200,8n1 console=com1,vga --- xenserver/vmlinuz xencons=hvc console=hvc0 console=tty0 answerfile=http://[pxehost]/answerfile.xml remotelog=[SYSLOG] install --- xenserver/install.img The problem is that ipxe uses different syntax, I could not figure out how to convert this configuration to work on ipxe. • How to set up dual quadro cards on RHEL 5.5?

  I have a RHEL 5 workstation with 2 nvidia Quadro FX4500 cards, with one display attached to each card. After doing a clean install of RHEL 5.5, the second display doesnt work (it worked ok in RHEL 5.2). Neither separate X screens nor Xinerama are working. The kernel version is 2.6.18-194.el5 I've tried nvidia drivers 185.18.36 (the ones that i was using on 5.2) and the latest 260.19.36 and neither works.   I have banshee 2.2.1 with Ubuntu 11.10 I have been trying to update banshee to 2.4 (released yesterday) but it just isnt working, I have been using sudo add-apt-repository ppa:banshee-team/ppa in terminal, from the Banshee.fm website. but after running through terminal it says this: sudo add-apt-repository ppa:banshee-team/ppa You are about to add the following PPA to your system: PPA for Banshee Team This PPA contains the latest stable debs of Banshee for Ubuntu. I have my IPv4 Default gateway set to 192.168.2.1 (my router) and Nameserver 1 as 8.8.8.8 (google's public). Under my email tab I have from email ***@gmail.com outgoing mail server smtp.google.com port to connect to 465 tls/ssl SSL use smtp auth checked username ***@gmail.com password **** I then went into accounts and changed the root email to ***@gmail.com. When I try and send a test email, I get Your test email could not be sent: timed out So what am I doing wrong?

• Qmail does not forward mail to a specific domain

  Hi I have a dedicated hosting account with GoDaddy.com. I've pointed my domain's email to work with Google apps. The server has qmail running and it forwards email to all domains just fine except for MY domain (mydomain.com) - it says 550 User xxx not found in mydomain.com I believe it thinks I've hosted email on the server itself (not gmail) and it's trying to validate if [email protected] exists on my server (which is not the case since it's all handled by google apps). How do I make it forward mail to all domains? Thank you :) EDIT: I would only need it forwarding emails if the connection originates from 127.0.0.1 - which I believe is the default way it's configured. So to clarify: I just need a purely forwarded configuration so my PHP scripts have the ability to send email.

• How can I exceed the 60% Memory Limit of IIS7

  Pardon if this is more stackoverflow vs. serverfault. It seems to be on the border. We have an application that caches a large amount of product data for an e-commerce application using ASP.NET caching. This is a dictionary object with 65K elements, and our calculations put the object's size at ~10GB. Problem: The amount of memory the object consumes seems to be far in excess of our 10GB calculation. BIGGEST CONCERN: We can't seem to use over 60% of the 32GB in the server. What we've tried so far: In machine.config/system.web (sf doesn't allow the tags, pardon the formatting): processModel autoConfig="true" memoryLimit="80" In web.config/system.web/caching/cache (sf doesn't allow the tags, pardon the formatting): privateBytesLimit = "20000000000" (and 0, the default of course) percentagePhysicalMemoryUsedLimit = "90" Environment: Windows 2008R2 x64 32GB RAM IIS7 Nothing seems to allow us to exceed the 60% value. • VMware networking - PortChannel or not?

  My ESX hosts each have 8 NICS. I have set up 2 NICs for our iSCSI SAN - each is connected to a different SAN switch. 2 NICs are set up for vMotion and Service Console - these are each connected to a different core switch (ports are trunked with VLANs dedicated to vMotion and Management) I now have four ports left over. Currently we have these set up each going into our default VLAN. Two NICs are connected to one core-switch and two are connected to the other. We decided to aggregate the connections to each switch - so they are teamed at the vswitch end, and port channelled at the physical switch end. I am now reading that port channelling these connections is not particularly useful, perhaps even over complicating things. Is there a particular problem with using port channels for VMware? What method provides the best balance between redundancy and performance?

  I have two ASUS laptops running Windows 7 connected wirelessly via 802.11n at 150 Mbit, as reported by Task Manager. The router is Netgear WNDR3700. • Should websites live in /var/ or /usr/ according to recommended usage?

  According to a guide on the Linux directory structure, /usr/ is for application files, and /var/ is for files that change (I assume this means "files that belong to the applications"). Is this correct? If this is the case then I'm a little torn between using either. A website is an application (if it's dynamic, so to speak), but in other cases it is just a collection of files used by Apache. The default www dir lives in /var/www/, so should we follow suit by using /var/websites/ (or something similar), or choose /usr/websites/ since they could be applications? This is a very trivial question, but it's bugging me nonetheless. For our case, I'm leaning toward /usr/web or something like that, since our websites are all applications. Update: This is for our company websites; it's not a shared hosting server, so we don't need to worry about separating them in /home/ or anything like that.

• Monogame - Shader parameters missing

  I am currently working on a simple game that I am building in Windows 8 using MonoGame (develop3d). I am using some shader code from a tutorial (made by Charles Humphrey) and having an issue populating a 'texture' parameter. I'm not well versed writing shaders, so this might be caused by a more obvious problem. I have debugged through MonoGame's Content processor to see how this shader is being parsed, all the non 'texture' parameters are there and look to be loading correctly.   In the man pages for sshd_config, for the AllowTCPForwarding option, it states: AllowTcpForwarding Specifies whether TCP forwarding is permitted. The default is “yes”. Note that disabling TCP forwarding does not improve security unless users are also denied shell access, as they can always install their own forwarders. How do I install my own forwarder? I have a remote server in which I disabled TCPForwarding a long while ago. I would like to "enable" it for myself only, by using my own forwarder, while keeping the forwarding closed to the other users. I've looked around, but cannot seem to find the right pkgs to accomplish this. Can anyone please elaborate? Thanks! Eric

• KVM CLI install for CentOS 6.3 defaults to Minimal Install

  So I now I've installed KVM (and its associated tools and packages- libvirt, VMM etc.). On the GUI (i.e using the VMM), installation works as its supposed to. However, when I try to create a VM using the command line interface, the OS (I am working with CentOS 6.3) defaults to a Minimal Install instead of giving me options to choose from at the time of installation. I am trying to install using the following command: virt-install \ --connect qemu:///system \ --virt-type kvm --name testVM2 \ --ram 512 --disk path=/var/lib/libvirt/images/testVM2.img,size=8 --vnc \ --cdrom /media/db18de8e-0853-49fb-80de-5c794d58a46f/CentOS-6.3- x86_64-bin-DVD1.iso \ --network network=default Specifying the OS-type or the OS-variant parameters doesn't make a difference. • Can I manually map a file extension to an IFilter?

  I'm working with Microsoft Indexing Service. I have purchased a third-party IFilter to extract XMP metadata from Adobe products. I'm having trouble getting it to work, and it occurs to me that the problem is that I don't actually have the Adobe software installed on my server, so the IFilters are not mapped. Put another way, there's nothing to tell the indexer that ".psd" files should use this DLL rather than the default DLL. Is it possible to manually map file extensions to the IFilter you want to use?

• archiva/jetty with nginx ssl proxy: getting http responses

  I've been banging my head against this for awhile now. I have an archiva repository server I'm trying to proxy through nginx with ssl offloading. archiva has a jetty server built in that is listening on port 8008 of the localhost. I'm able to get to the archiva server through the proxy, but it wants to return http responses and not https responses. I thought that setting the following headers was supposed to tell the server to respond with https: proxy_set_header X-Forwarded-For $proxy_add_x_forwarded_for; proxy_set_header X-Forwarded-Proto https; proxy_redirect off; I also tried "proxy_redirect default;". It seems that the jetty/archiva server is not recognizing these or there needs to be something more. I've been scouring forums and as far as I can tell, everything is set as it should be. I'm not sure where else to check at this point. Has anyone had any success with this?

  I build a basic WCF service that I now want to host in IIS7 under Windows Server 2008 R2. I added the service as an application under the default web site but whenever i try to run the application I get the following error: HTTP Error 500.19 - Internal Server Error The requested page cannot be accessed because the related configuration data for the page is invalid. Config Error - Cannot read configuration file due to insufficient permissions The only way I can get this service working is if i choose to "connect as" the server Administrator when adding the service. the "application user (pass-through authentication)" option does not seem to work. Could anyone help me out, I've just started using IIS7 and have no idea what to do... Thanks

• Change Gnome-Panel profile at startup according to number of displays

  I'm running Ubuntu 10.04 on a Laptop. I have a startup script which enables external displays, if they are connected. It runs at GDM startup, configured in /etc/gdm/Init/Default. When i'm running without external displays, Gnome should use 2 Panels. When i'm using 2 external displays, Gnome should add an additional Panel to the second display. But this should of course be removed again if i detach the external displays (and restart). Can i configure this use case by using Gnome Panel-profiles? I read that there is a startup option "--profile" for gnome-panel, but i don't know how and where i could switch the profile, especially because this has to be done after recognizing the number of displays. Or can i add a general Gnome profile and switch between those profiles somehow to achieve this behavior?

• HP Recovery Manager failed creating a backup disc

  I had to restore my computer (running Windows 7) back to its factory default, so I ran the HP recovery manager disc and chose to reformat my computer. Before doing this I was given an option to backup my current files to a DVD, and I did so; getting the confirmation of a successful DVD burn. Booting up my computer everything looks like it did when I first purchased it (like expected). But when I pop in the backup DVD and run the recovery EXE inside it, the application creates a directory inside C:\System Recovery Files which contains the empty directories: [(^_^)] and Program Data. So essentially what I'm getting out of this is a failure in creating a back-up. Which is not only confusing but incredibly frusterating. Is there any way that I can recover the files lost in the

• Security risk of JIRA standalone installation running JRE version 1.6.0_26 vs 1.6.0_29 (latest)

  Atlassian recently introduced a standalone installer that installs JIRA, along with its own JRE. Unfortunately the JRE Atlassian bundles with this installer is 1.6.0_26, whereas the current version of the JRE is 1.6.0_29. This is potentially concerning given there were vulnerabilities in _26 that were fixed in the subsequent versions. We are currently using the bundled-installer version of JIRA and one contractor has recommended we ditch this for the system-installed JRE. My question is this: what is the actual security risk of continuing to use the _26 version of the JRE included in the bundled installer? There is no public access to our install of JIRA (only about 20 employees and contractors can login to our JIRA) and it's only accessible on a subdomain of a domain at which there's no publicly-available website. If there's a not insignificant risk inherent in sticking with the older JRE, why hasn't Atlassian upgraded the default JRE?

  We have installed and configured TFS, we have connected to it using Visual Studio.  Now it is time to get a project created. From Team Explorer, we will right click on the servername\Collection item in the tree to select New Team Project. Once selected, this will open the New Team Project dialog.  Provide a name, then click Next.   The next step is to select a Project Template.  By default you will have 2 available (but there are many downloadable options).  It is important to understand what the templates bring and what options we will live with in the Lifecycle Management option we select. Once selected, click Next. Now we are at the point to specify where our code will be collected, Source Code settings part of the wizard.  Since we are starting new, we will select an empty folder. Click Next. Next we get a Summary view of the options selected. Click Finish. Once the template is downloaded, applied and our choices processed, we have completed the project creation.   This should be our final product …
