• Passing Binary Data to a Stored Procedure in SQL Server 2008

  I'm trying to figure out a way to store files in a database. I know it's recommended to store files on the file system rather than the database, but the job I'm working on would highly prefer using the database to store these images (files). There are also some constraints. I'm not an admin user, and I have to make stored procedures to execute all the commands. This hasn't been of much difficulty so far, but I cannot for the life of me establish a way to store a file (image) in the database. When I try to use the BULK command, I get an error saying "You do not have permission to use the bulk load statement." The bulk utility seemed like the easy way to upload files to the database, but without permissions I have to figure a work-a-round. I decided to use an HTML form with a file upload input type and handle it with PHP. The PHP calls the stored procedure and passes in the contents of the file. The problem is that now it's saying that the max length of a parameter can only be 128 characters. Now I'm completely stuck. I don't have permissions to use the bulk command and it appears that the max length of a parameter that I can pass to the SP is 128 characters. I expected to run into problems because binary characters and ascii characters don't mix well together, but I'm at a dead end... Thanks

• modify the way files get opened from finder by shift-clicking (etc) as in windows

  In the windows shell it is possible to modify the default action for opening any document type when holding down a modifier key such as shift or option when double clicking. So for example I can open a jpeg in irfanview if I just double click it, in firefox if I shift-double click it or in potatoshop if I option-double click it. However on a mac I have to right click, and choose "open with..", which can be annoying when there are a lot of possible candidates (such as with jpegs) or if I want to open the file with somehting like an applescript, which won't show up on the list and will have to be found in the file system and specified manually, every.. single.. time. Is there a way of making the mac open files differently by holding down modifier keys when double clicking?

• Limiting ssh user account only to access his home directory!

  By reading some tutorials online I used these commands: Make a local group: net localgroup CopsshUsers /ADD Deny access to this group at top level: cacls c:\ /c /e /t /d CopsshUsers Open access to the copSSH installation directory: cacls copssh-inst-dir /c /e /t /r CopsshUsers Add Copssh user to the group above: net localgroup CopsshUsers mysshuser /add simply put these commands will try to create a usergroup that has no permission on your computer and it only have access to the copSSH Installation directory. This is not true, since you cannot change the permission on your windows directory, the third command won't remove access to windows folder (it says access denied on his log). Somehow I achieved that by taking ownership of Windows folder and then i execute the third command so CopsshUsers has no permissions on windows folder from now on. Now i tried to SSH to the server and it simply can't login! this is kind of funny because with permission on windows directory you can login and without it you can't!! So if you CAN SSH to the server somehow you know that you have access to the windows directory! (Is this really true??) Simple task: Limiting ssh user account only to access his home directory on WINDOWS and nothing else! Guys please help!

• Monitor Processes' Memory Usage

  We have an IBM P series box running AIX 5.3. This is our application server, whereby our J2EE application is running in Oracle's Applications Server (version 10g r2). At around 11pm till the next day 7am, we have shell scripts running, which executes Java class programs. Recently, this server has been experiencing some high memory usage, which caused some of the Java class programs throwing "Out of memory" exception . We normally use NMON to monitor the server's resources, such as CPU, I/O, memory, etc. But because of this OOM issue, we would like to know throughout the day, what are the processes which are running and how much memory each process consumed. NMON is not able to show this. Even with the "-T" parameter, it only shows the top processes and not all. Is there any thing we can use to monitor all the processes' memory?

• Can I make ssh tell me which control file it would use for multiplexing?

  I am using the following options in my ~/.ssh/config in order to enable connection multiplexing: ControlMaster auto ControlPath ~/.ssh/control/master-%r@%h:%p However, this has the annoying problem that the first shell to connect to a particular server must be the last to disconnect, because it is the master connection that all the other connections are using. So if you log out of the master, it appears to just hang. To solve this, I would like to wrap ssh with a script that checks if the control master file exists, and if not, starts a master ssh process in the background. Then it would start a slave ssh session. In order to accomplish this, my script would have to determine the path to the control file that ssh would use. This would entail parsing the ssh command line options and config files and implementing the logic for determining the ControlPath. Is there any way to just ask ssh what path it would use, so I can check it?

• Using physical disk with VMware Workstation

  I am using VMware Workstation 9.0 under Windows 7 and trying to load my Linux from Physicaldisk0. And it boots, grub sees the two partitions on the disk (I checked in command line) and the kernel and the initrd loads and then it stops saying "device not found"and drops me into an emergency shell. Indeed there is absolutely nothing in /dev not the /sda device it expects not /hda nothing that looks like a disk. Edit: I can boot the Linux disk just fine if I boot it from BIOS and not as a VM. Edit2: The question is, how can I make this setup work?

• On Windows, what filename extensions denote an executable?

  On Windows, *.exe, *.bat, *.cmd, and *.com all represent programs or shell scripts that can be run, simply by double-clicking them. Are there any other filename extensions that indicate a file is executable? EDIT: When I jump into a new project (or back into an old project!), one of the common things I want to do when looking around is to find out what tools there are. On Unix (which I've used for decades), there's an execute bit, so this is as simple as: find . -executable -type f I figured that on Windows, which seems to have a much more complex mechanism for "is this executable (and how do I execute it)", there would be a relatively small number of file name extensions which would serve roughly the same purpose. For my current project, *.exe *.bat *.cmd is almost certainly sufficient, but I figured I'd ask if there was an authoritative list.

So I tried removing the 2 fields from detailsview and shows error Cannot insert the value NULL into column 'CreatedBy', table 'D:\OAS\OAS\APP_DATA\ASPNETDB.MDF.dbo.OASTest'; column does not allow nulls. INSERT fails. The statement has been terminated. For some reason parameters value is not being set. Can anybody bother to understand this and help?

• Perl Module from relative path not working in IIS6

  Disclaimer: I am not a PERL developer and am learning by the seat of my pants. I am using a Perl module called from a CGI scipt in IIS 6 that is bombing. The identical folder structure on an XP machine (IIS 5.1) works fantastic. If I remove the module loading command at line 9, it will print "about to load" and "ok", but When I try to run use Language::Guess; I receive The specified CGI application misbehaved by not returning a complete set of HTTP headers. in the browser. The folder structure is /cgi-bin/test.pl /PerlModules/Language/Guess.pm I have tried adjusting the file/folder permissions and have reviewed my IIS configuration time and again. It runs fine from the command line on the IIS machine or if I copy the module into \Perl\site\lib, but I don't have permission to load modules on the shared server this script is destined for. Am I missing something simple? • chmod -R 777 /. - RHEL 5.5

  A shell script testing went bad and it issued chmod -R 777 /. to the system, instead of chmod -R 777 ./ and as expected it wiped the critical meta data. We have turned off the system and it will not function properly the next time it is turned on. I am told that rpm --setperms -a rpm --setugids -a should atleast fix the permission of the packages maintained by rpm. Is it worth doing? And is there any script available which will copy the permission from an identical system? To atleast get the box working. The Box is running RHEL5.5 Thanks!

• Problem changing Java version using alternatives

  I'm not quite sure how I got into this mess, but for some reason I'm not able to change the current version of Java using alternatives. I can run alternatives --config java and type my selection but when I echo the version number for either java or javac, it spits back out 1.5 every time (despite alternatives showing the current version is 1.6). The server I'm working with is running RHEL5, by the way. I have verified that the paths used in alternatives are pointing to the correct directories. • Selecting a whole database over an individual table to output to file

• How to get rid of diacritics on my keyboard?

  I searched Google and SU for my problem, but everybody seems to want to add diacritics, while I don't want them. I'm using Windows 7 and have a US keyboard installed, not the international version. Despite that some keys, like ", ^ and ~ are used for diacritics, which means that I have to type "SPACE to get a double quote. How do I get rid of this? My other PC, with the same settings, doesn't show this behavior. edit re Stefan's answer I don't see the icon Stefan refers to in my taskbar, probably because I have Classic Shell installed. • Showing protocol specific mini icons for Jabber/XMPP gateway contacts

  Since a short while I'm using Ubuntu Oneiric Ocelot (11.10) with gnome-shell (Gnome 3) and I'm trying to get accustomed to the default Empathy Instant Messaging client. I'm using a gateway service on the side of my Jabber/XMPP server to communicate with lots of contacts over proprietary networks like ICQ or MSN. So I don't use Empathy's native support for ICQ and MSN, and I don't want to change back to using such a thing for various reasons. One thing that annoys me is that Empathy does not make it clear to me that these contacts are from another instant messaging network. If I enable the View Show Protocols option they are all recognized as Jabber/XMPP contacts. Although I perfectly understand why that happens, I would like to be able to change this behavior to make Empathy mark these contacts correctly. Is there a configuration option or a plugin for this? Or may this feature still be in development and will be available later?

I want to copy it to the documents folder at installation and then, every time the app launches, get the newest version of this file from the Internet. • TypeScript - separating code output

  i'm trying typescript and I find it very useful. I've a quite large project and i was considering rewriting it using typescript. The main problem here is the following: file A.ts: class A extends B { // A stuff } file B.ts: class B { // B stuff } If I compile A.ts with this command: tsc --out compiledA.js A.ts I'll get error from the compiler cause he doesn't know how to threat the "B" after extends. So, a "solution" would be including in A.ts (as first line of code): /// <reference path="./B.ts" /> Compiling again A.ts with the same command tsc --out compiledA.js A.ts Will result in compiledA.js containing both B.ts and A.ts code. ( which could be very nice ) In my case, I only need to compile the A.ts code in the compiledA.js file and I don't want the B.ts stuff to be in there. Indeed, what I want is: tsc --out A.js A.ts = compile only the A.ts stuff tsc --out B.js B.ts = compile only the B.ts stuff I can do it by removing the "extends" keyword but doing that I'll loose most of the typescript goodness. Can someone telll me if there's a way to do this ?

• Replace .sln with MSBuild and wrap contained projects into targets

  I'd like to create a MSBuild project that reflects the project dependencies in a solution and wraps the VS projects inside reusable targets. The problem I like solve doing this is to svn-export, build and deploy a specific assembly (and its dependencies) in an BizTalk application. My question is: How can I make the targets for svn-exporting, building and deploying reusable and also reuse the wrapped projects when they are built for different dependencies? I know it would be simpler to just build the solution and deploy only the assemblies needed but I'd like to reuse the targets as much as possible. • Linux file permissions not being preserved

  I am deploying some custom software as root (a necessity for this situation). I set the owner/group to user1:user1 and set all the files to 644 beforehand in shell, then copy and deploy with ant. However, when files get copied over from the deployment directory, the ownership changes back to root and all the files install with 666 permissions. This seems to occur whether the file is overwritten or newly created. I believe there is a way to set an option in cp, mv commands to preserve permissions, but that would be a lot of commands to change. How can I fix this? Is there some setting I can change temporarily for root so the install always preserves the file permissions?

When I call "hitstation.PrepareHit", the event above gets called a couple times, then I wait and call "hitStation.HitBall", and the event above gets called a couple more times. private void HitBall() { try { try { Mouse.OverrideCursor = Cursors.Wait; //prepare hit hitStation.PrepareHit(hitSpeed); Thread.Wait(1000); PlayWarning(); //hit hitStation.HitBall(hitSpeed); } catch (TimeoutException ex) { MessageBox.Show("Timeout hitting ball: " + ex.Message); } } finally { Mouse.OverrideCursor = null; } } The problem I'm having is that the ListBox that is bound to my SerialLog gets updated only when the HitBall method finishes. I was expecting seeing a bunch of updates from the PrepareHit, a pause and then a bunch more updates from the HitBall. I've tried a couple of DispatcherPriority arguments, but they don't seem to have any effect.

• Maven: properties not being substituted

  I'm using a maven plugin for install4j in my project, located here. That plugin lets you pass variables to install4j using the <compilerVariables> section. Here's the relevant section of my pom: <plugin> <groupId>com.google.code.maven-install4j</groupId> <artifactId>maven-install4j-plugin</artifactId> <version>0.1.1</version> <configuration> <executable>${devenv.install4jc}</executable> <configFile>${basedir}/newinstaller/ehd.install4j</configFile> <releaseId>${project.version}</releaseId> <attach>false</attach> <skipOnMissingExecutable>false</skipOnMissingExecutable> <compilerVariables> <property> <name>m2_home</name> <value>${settings.localRepository}</value> </property> </compilerVariables> </configuration> </plugin> The problem is that ${settings.localRepository} is not being substituted with the actual directory when I run the plugin. Here's the command line script that install4j is generating: [INFO] Running the following command for install4j compile: /bin/sh -c /home/zach/install4j/bin/install4jc --release=9.1-SNAPSHOT --destination="/home/zach/projects/java/ehdtrunk/target/install4j" -D m2_home=${settings.localRepository} /home/zach/projects/java/ehdtrunk/newinstaller/ehd.install4j Is this the fault of the plugin? If so, what needs to change to allow the substitution to happen?

• Nhibernate fires SQL commands

  Hi all, when updating an entity A, NHibernate also send an SQL update command for some other entity B. A and B are not related. Just before saving entity A, the parent of entity B is loaded via a SQLQuery. Then, when accessed, B is lazy loaded (part of a collection). If I save entity A an update statement for entity B is generated as well. How can that be, that when saving an entity, another entity loaded before but is not related to the entity saved, is updated as well?! Can I somehow track where the update comes from? Btw. I am using an save event listener. Could it be that this is always triggered for entity loaded, even though they are not saved explicitly? public class EntitySaveEventListener : NHibernate.Event.Default.DefaultSaveEventListener { protected override object PerformSaveOrUpdate(SaveOrUpdateEvent e) { //auditing return base.PerformSaveOrUpdate(e); } } Update (sorry for providing not enough info): I tracked it down a bit. A select stateement on a entity called address is executed (is it lazy loaded by a parent). Then I create a new entity called Request. Right before saving this entity a session flush is called which updates the address, even though I did not call save or update on the address. Would the address be updated automatically when it is manipulated somehow even though it is not explicitly saved via it's parent (cascade)?
