    Say I have a web site with a master page and an aspx page. In my ASPX page, I am pointing to my masterpage with the MasterType tag. <%@ MasterType VirtualPath="~/mymasterpage.master" % Say, I've defined a label in the markup of my master page. If you look at the designer code, this label should be something like this. protected global::System.Web.UI.WebControls.Label label1; Now in my content page, I would like to reference this label. If I type in this "Master.label1", the complier will complain that the control is inaccessible due to the protection level" and rightly so, as label1 is automatically defined as "protected". My question is, if I define controls in my markup page, is it possible to set these controls as public instead of protected? I do not see an attribute for it. thanks in advance.

  • Why would it be a bad idea to have database connection open between client requests?

    1) Book I’m reading argues that connections shouldn’t be opened between client requests, since they are a finite resource. I realize that max pool size can quickly be reached and thus any further attempts to open a connection will be queued until connection becomes available and for that reason it would be imperative that we release connection as soon as possible. But assuming all request will open connection to the same DB, then I’m not sure how having a connection open between two client requests would be any less efficient than having each request first acquiring a connection from connection pool and later returning that object to connection pool? 2) Book also recommends that when database code is encapsulated in a dedicated data access class, then method M opening a database connection should also close that connection. a) I assume one reason why M should also close it, is because if method M opening the connection doesn’t also close it, but instead this connection object is used inside several methods, then it’s more likely that a programmer will forget to close it. b) Are there any other reasons why a method opening the connection should also close it? thanx

  • How do I unit test controllers for an asp.net mvc site that uses StructureMap and NHibernate?

    I have an asp.net mvc2 application that is using StructureMap 2.6 and NHibernate 3.x. I would like to add unit tests to the application but am sort of at a loss for how to accomplish it. Say I have a basic controller called Posts that has an action called Index. The controller looks something like: public class PostsController : Controller { private readonly IPostService _postService; public PostsController(IPostService postService) { _postService = postService; } public ActionResult Index() { return View(_postService.QueryOver<Post>().Future()); } } If I wanted to create an nunit test that would verify that the index action is returning all of the posts, how do I go about that? If mocking is recommended, do you just assume that interaction with the database will work? Sorry for asking such a broad question, but my web searches haven't turned up anything decent for how to unit test asp.net mvc actions that use StructureMap (or any other IOC) and NHibernate. btw, if you don't like that I return a QueryOver object from my post service, pretend it is an IQueryable object. I'm using it essentially in the same way.

    Hi, could you please help me find the reason of the mystery I've found? In the below code, I create a DataTable and filter it. When I use filter1, everything works as expected. When I use filter2, everything works as expected only if the SubsectionAmount variable is less than 10. As soon as I set SubsectionAmount=10, the dr2 array returns Nothing. I can't find what is wrong.   • Linking buttion to jQuery through service

    I have a small problem that should be very easy to overcome. For some reason I cant work this out. So the problem is I cannot get a button to link to some jquery.     Driving me mad on a personal project; I know I've done this before but elsewhere and don't have the code. As far as I can see, I'm setting the parameter, I'm setting its value, the connection is open, yet when I try to fill the dataset I get the error 'Procedure or function expects parameter "@test" which was not supplied'. (This is obviously a simplified test! Same error on this or the real, rather longer code though.)     I am using the Elmah Logged event in my Global.asax file to transfer users to a feedback form when an unhandled exception occurs. Sometimes I log other handled exceptions. For example: ErrorSignal.FromCurrentContext().Raise(new System.ApplicationException("Program code not found: " + Student.MostRecentApplication.ProgramCode)); // more code that should execute after logging this exception The problem I am having is that the Logged event gets fired for both unhandled and these handled, raised exceptions. Is there a way to determine, in the Logged event handler, whether the exception was raised via ErrorSignal class or was simply unhandled? Are there other Elmah events that I can take advantage of?

    Hi, I have a dataset that has two datatables. In the first datatable I have EmpNo,EmpName and EmpAddress In the second datatable I have Empno,EmpJoindate, EmpSalary. I want a result where I should show EmpName as the label and his/her details in the gridview I populate a datalist with the first table, and have EmpNo as the datakeys. Then I populate the gridview inside the datatable which has EmpNo,EmpJoinDate and EmpAddress. My code is some what as below Datalist1.DataSource = dt; Datalist1.DataBind(); for (int i = 0; i < Datalist1.Items.Count; i++) { int EmpNo = Convert.ToInt32(Datalist1.DataKeys[i]); GridView gv = (GridView)Datalist1.FindControl("gv"); gv.DataSource = dt2; gv.DataBind(); } Now I have a problem, I have to bind the Details of the corresponding Employee to the gridview. Whereas the above code will display all the details of all employees in the gridview. If we use IEnumerable we give a condition where(a=a.eno=EmpNo), and bind that list to the gridview. How do I do this in datatable. kindly do not give me suggestions of altering the stored procedure which results the values in two tables, because that cannot be altered.     Fairly simple issue which is solved in PHP by using a static variable. private static $pages; public function Pages() { if($pages == null) { $pages = new PageCollection(); $pages->findAll(); } } Everywhere in my code I use Pages()::someFindFunction() to make sure the results are fetched only once, and I use that same collection. I want the same in my .NET MVC application: use something like: <%=MySite.Pages.findById(1).Title%> In the code below, if I use a private variable, or if I use a public class with shared variables (doesn't matter) they are both persisted during the entire application. I want them to load the same way PHP does, once per request. Now where do I store the .NET equivalent of private static $pages, so that the code below works? //what to do with $pages??     I have attempted to make my first 3 tier application. In the process I have run into one problem I am yet to find an optimal solution for. Basically all my objects use an IFillable interface which forces the implementation of a sub as follows Public Sub Fill(ByVal Datareader As Data.IDataReader) Implements IFillable.Fill This sub then expects the Ids from the datareader will be identical to the properties of the object as such. Me.m_StockID = Datareader.GetGuid(Datareader.GetOrdinal("StockID")) In the end I end up with a datalayer that looks something like this. Public Shared Function GetStockByID(ByVal ConnectionString As String, ByVal StockID As Guid) As Stock Dim res As New Stock Using sqlConn As New SqlConnection(ConnectionString) sqlConn.Open() res.Fill(StockDataLayer.GetStockByIDQuery(sqlConn, StockID)) End Using Return res End Function Mostly this pattern seems to make sense. However my problem is, lets say I want to implement a property for Stock called StockBarcodeList. Under the above mentioned pattern any way I implement this property I will need to pass a connectionstring to it which obviously breaks my attempt at layer separation. Does anyone have any suggestions on how I might be able to solve this problem or am I going about this the completely wrong way? Does anyone have any suggestions on how I might improve my implementation? Please note however I am deliberately trying to avoid using the dataset in any form.

  • Why would a error get thrown inside my try-catch?

    I'm pushing a copy of our application over to a new dev server (IIS7) and the application is blowing up on a line inside of a try-catch block. It doesn't happen locally, it actually obey's the rules of a try-catch block, go figure. Any idea why this would be happening? Shouldn't it just be failing silently? Is there something environmental I need to enable/disable? Exception Details: System.NullReferenceException: Object reference not set to an instance of an object.
