• EJB-QL query never returning unless another query is run

  I have a strange strange problem. When executing the following EJB-QL query, my ENTIRE application will stop responding to requests, as the query never finishes executing. Query q = em.createQuery("SELECT o from RoomReservation as o WHERE o.deleted = FALSE AND o.room.id IN (Select r.id from Room as r where r.deleted = FALSE AND r.type.name = 'CLASSROOM')"); However, if I execute this query before I execute the other query, it runs without issue. Query dumbQuery = em.createQuery("SELECT o from Room as o WHERE o.deleted = FALSE"); Any idea what in the world is going on?

• Is there any use for Bash scripting anymore?

  I just finished my second year as a university CS student, so my "real-world" knowledge is lacking. I learned Java my first year, continued with Java and picked up C and simple Bash scripting my second. This summer I'm trying to learn Perl (God help me). I've dabbled with Python a bit in the past. My question is, now that we have very readable, very writable scripting languages like Python, Ruby, Perl, etc, why does anyone write Bash scripts? Is there something I'm missing? I know my linux box has perl and python. Are they not ubiquitous enough? Is there really something that's easier to do in Bash than in some other hll?

• How to create multiple SOAP webservice clients in same netbeans 6.8 project

  I have a project that is largely just to help one application make connections to an SAP server, for real-time updates. So the first web service client works fine, but I try to create a second and it seems to hang and I expect part of the problem is that it is trying to create a new Service class, but the namespace for all the webservices are identical, but the wsdl is obviously different, so it can't create the client. I can do it manually, by just having Service1, Service2, etc, or making some other change, but the issue is that Netbeans should be able to do this easily. I can't use Eclipse as the wsimport parameters that Netbeans uses works, in Eclipse I would need to do too much to make it work, so I will go with the easier tool. I don't want to create a new project for each webservice, as that just seems to be perpetuating a design error. So, how can I easily create multiple webservice clients that will all have the same target namespace, using Netbeans 6.8+?

• Ideas for web development practical jokes?

  I am a web developer for a Django-based site for a student organization, and I have the opportunity to make the website temporarily absurd for a day of general campus-wide debauchery and chaos (long story, doesn't matter.) What are your best ideas for web development practical jokes (that you could never use in the real world)? For example, one idea we had was to use a client-side script to convert each character to its upside down equivalent in Unicode, si?? ??i? ?ui????os. I'm not necessarily looking for Django-specific solutions. I imagine most of these things would happen on the front-end. I am also quite aware that usability will suffer considerably--the point is to be fun for a day, and there will always be a link to the normal version of the site. Also, everything must be relatively cosmetic and easily reversible--I'm happy to swap out static CSS/JS/HTML/templates/images, and even temporarily add a django view, but no messing with the data level!

• Named pipe is not flushing in Python

  I have a named pipe created via the os.mkfifo() command. I have two different Python processes accessing this named pipe, process A is reading, and process B is writing. Process A uses the select function to determine when there is data available in the fifo/pipe. Despite the fact that process B flushes after each write call, process A's select function does not always return (it keeps blocking as if there is no new data). After looking into this issue extensively, I finally just programmed process B to add 5KB of garbage writes before and after my real call, and likewise process A is programmed to ignore those 5KB. Now everything works fine, and select is always returning appropriately. I came to this hack-ish solution by noticing that process A's select would return if process B were to be killed (after it was writing and flushing, it would sleep on a read pipe). Is there a problem with flush in Python for named pipes?

• Python's subprocess.Popen object hangs gathering child output when child process does not exit

  When a process exits abnormally or not at all, I still want to be able to gather what output it may have generated up until that point. • Python - Linux - Connecting to MS SQL with Windows Credentials - FreeTDS+UnixODBC + pyodbc or pymssq

  There doesn't seem to be any great instructions for setting this up. Does anyone have any good instructions? I am a linux noob so be gentle. I did see another post that is similar, but no real answer. I have a couple of problems. FreeTDS doesn't "seem" to be working. I am trying to connect and I get the following message using the "tsql" command: "Default database being set to databaseName There was a problem connecting to the server" but it doesn't mention what the problem is. The error I get when I try to connect using pyodbc is: "pyodbc.Error: ('08S01', '[08S01] [unixODBC][FreeTDS][SQL Server]Unable to connect: Adaptive Server is unavailable or does not exist (20009) (SQLDriverConnectW)')" I tried something similar with pymssql, but I ran into similar issues. I keep getting errors that I can't connect, but it doesn't tell me why.

Object obj; PropertyDescriptorCollection A = TypeDescriptor.GetProperties(obj); PropertyInfo[] B = obj.GetType().GetProperties(); // EDIT* I'm trying to understand the difference between A and B. From what I understand TypeDescriptor.GetProperties() will return custom TypeDescriptor properties, where as Type.GetProperties() will only return intrinsic "real" properties of the object. Is this right?   I'd like to try writing my own minimal NT subsystem on Windows 7 for purely educational purposes -- something like a bare-bones equivalent of the posix.exe in Microsoft's Subsystem for Unix-based Applications. But I can't seem to find any public documentation on this topic. What API does a subsystem need to implement? How does it get registered with Windows? How does the subsystem image need to be built (what flags need to be set in the PE header, etc.)? I'd most like to find a book or web site with an overview of the entire subject, or even the source code for a "hello world" NT subsystem that someone else has written. But anything at all would be appreciated if you can point me in the right direction here...

• Getting started with Windows Azure

  Hi All, I'm going to sound like a complete newbie here but here goes... I've just signed up for a Windows Azure account and was hoping to get a simple hello world aspx page up and running in a browser to see how it all works but I can't seem to find a simple guide to getting a very simple web application running. I've got as far as setting up a "service" and going onto the "deploy" page but it's asking me upload an "application package". I've looked on MSDN but there aren't any simple guides, just reams of documentation talking about "roles" and "development fabric". For somebody that is proficient in HTML/CSS and knows a little abit about asp.net it may just as well be in another language. So, does anybody know how to upload a simple aspx page and then access it in a browser? Jon

  I have been developing a toy editor, and I want my editor to look like the VS2010 text editor which can be dragged out of the main window to become a independent window and the dragged-out window can be maximized when it's dragged to the top of the screen, and can be docked by being dragged to the left or right side of the screen(which is a new feature in Win7). So I tried to use AvalonDock(a codeplex project) to do that.But I found the dragged-out DocumentContent(a class in AvalonDock,it inherits from ContentControl) is not treated like a real window in Win7. So I wanna know that What kind of window can be docked by being dragged to the left/right side or the top of the screen in Win7? Thanks!!

• Seam/JSF/Facelets Compiler or Validator (equivalent of JspC for JSP)

  Is there such a thing as JspC in the Seam/JSF/Facelets world? I used the Tomcat's JspC to validate a JSP/Struts application to validate if there are typos in the JSPs or some JSP was calling a Java function that didn't exist, etc. etc. From time to time I come across bugs in my current project (Seam/Facelets/RichFaces) where it's caused by a typo in action/value binding. And I think bugs like these can be caught using a program. Just wondering if someone has already written one. Basically a tool that can validate if the method/value binding are correct. I know this would be specially hard in Seam since names are Context sensitive and the tool should somehow figure out what the context is. But I think it should be easier to just check if the names are valid and the Objects bound to those names have the methods and/or properties being referred to in the JSF page. Thanks

• Is it possible to interop with Thunderbird using C#?

  Here's the latest hurdle in my ongoing quest to automate my job: All email in the company goes through 4 different email adresses, switching randomly back and forth (with a note attached in the global share: please set "keep email on server") All logic related to email is contained in a nice big Thunderbird profile, which gets copied back and forth to new machines; this includes sorting invoices into 5 different "folders", the list of VIP adresses to send notifications, and the VIP level of those customers I only need the contents of those folders (the attachments, anyway) The question: is there a way to ask Thunderbird for those attachments and lists from C#? Alternatively, can Outlook be set up to synchronize with Thunderbird? Where do I start reading? Ditching Thunderbird is not an option right now, I need to keep up with changes to the VIP list. P.S. I will set up a real email server right after Monkey saves me enough time to convince people about it.

• Why isn't pyinstaller making me an .exe file?

  I am attempting to follow this guide to make a simple Hello World script into an .exe file. I have Windows Vista with an AMD 64-bit processor I have installed Python 2.6.5 (Windows AMD64 version) I have set the PATH (if that's the right word) so that the command line recognizes Python I have installed UPX (there only seems to be a 32-bit version for Windows) and pasted a copy of upx.exe into the Python26 folder as instructed. I have installed Pywin (Windows AMD 64 Python 2.6 version) I have run Pyinstaller's Configure.py. It gives some error messages but seems to complete. • Best way to implement a Parsing/Editable Richtextbox in WPF

  I'm trying to implement (as a prototype initially), a richtextbox control which can be parsed in real time to apply certain formatting options to it. This is being done in WPF so I thought the best way to go about it would be to extend the existing rich text box control. I've run into the issue where it isn't documented well and the examples are quite slow (the ones I found have parse the whole document on every keystroke). The way I've currently decided to go about it is to create a custom Inline element which can hold the formatting tags, and the contents. Hence I only have to parse the current paragraph and the runs in that paragraph for formatting tags. Is there a better way to achieve this? Note this isn't for code/syntax based documents (so AvalonEdit isn't appropriate). Cheers

• Content display problems when using Suckerfish menus with 960.gs and IE

  I'm using 960.gs layout and when I add the suckerfish menu as part of the content to one of the grids, the contents of adjacent siblings bleed through the menu in all versions of IE. In the listed html below, the text from 'belowFoldSection' will appear through the menu when it is visible and has enough items to make it span over 2nd section. However, the contents of 'introSummary' will be underneath the menu, as expected. I've set the z-index for #nav and #nav ul in my css and this of course makes it work in FF, Chrome and Safari, but not in IE (because IE incorrectly assigns child elements its own z-index). If I change the .grid_nn class 'position' attribute (set by default in the 960 template) from 'relative' to absolute, this fixes it in IE. However, it is my understanding that I don't want the child elements of the 'container_12' to be taken out of the flow of the document and want them positioned relative to the .container_12's starting point. (Changing the attribute to absolute causes other general layout problems) Can anyone suggest a work-around? • Transactions not working for SubSonic under Oracle?

  The following code sample works perfectly under SQL Server 2005: using (TransactionScope ts = new TransactionScope()) { using (SharedDbConnectionScope scope = new SharedDbConnectionScope()) { MyTable t = new MyTable(); t.Name = "Test"; t.Comments = "Comments 123"; t.Save(); ts.Complete(); } } But under Oracle 10g it throws a "ORA-02089: COMMIT is not allowed in a subordinate session" error. If I only execute the code inside the SharedDbConnectionScope block then everything works OK, but obviously I won't be able to execute operations under a transaction, thus risking data corruption. This is only a small sample of what my real application does. I'm not sure as to what may be causing this behavior; anyone out there care to shed some light on this issue please? • Umbraco or ASP.NET MVC

  I'm about to create a site that will act as public front site of company that sells furniture, but after user log in, he'll see much more options. Internal news, files to download, customized pricings, newsletters, etc. - stuff for wholesale clients. I want to make it quickly and maintain/extend it easily. I'm asp.net developer and while I could write it in python, php, whatever else (I know these too), I still prefer asp.net. I was thinking about umbraco, since it gives a real productivity boost and that I familiar with it ( and extending it). I've had a short romance with ASP.NET MVC, so I know what it's all about, but I would still spend some time learning it (but what a fun!). Of course, there's also webforms, but that's my last choice here. Last but not least to mention is the SEO. The question is, have anyone of you had similiar dilemma and what was your final choice?

• Audio Conversion C#

  What is the best way to convert various audio formats to PCM? For example: mp3, evrc, ogg vox. Is there a library out there that will allow me to implement this relatively easily? EDIT: I guess my initial question wasn't really what I needed. Most of the libs I have found are file converters. What I need is a block converter, where I pass in a 1Kb block of vox data and it returns its converted PCM block. Of course I’ll have to tell the converter what type of data it is and various pieces of codec information. The solution I am going for is to save and VOIP formats into a common wav format and to play that conformed file in real time. I thought there should be an easy way to do this because all audio is eventually turned into PCM before it is outputted anyways.

  Dear all, One notion that has been prevalent mostly as rumours for many aspiring programmers is that the testing phase of the SDLC(Software Development Life Cycle) is not that challenging and interesting as one's job as a tester after a period of time becomes monotonous because a person does the same thing repeatedly over and over again. Boredom is a very important issue a software tester has to deal with. With regard to this I have the following questions: How can one overcome this in their day to day activities of their job as a software tester? What are the possible new avenues a tester can explore on a general note in a s/w co. ? Could you also please highlight what challenge's a tester could also face in real life situations.Something that would make their job also interesting and fun-filled. Thanks..:)

• How to make it easy for users to install my software? Does the programming language matter?

  I'm a beginner to intermediate programmer and I've learned some java and C#. I want to start thinking about making some simple programs that I can release to the world. Just some basic stuff like calendar software that will probably be free. Users want the install process to be quick and easy. To install a java program, I have to tell them to have java installed. To install a C# program, I have to tell them to have .NET installed. I'm worried this might put off some potential users who just want to double click an exe file, choose a directory and be pretty much done. So, I guess this is an either/or two part question: 1) Is there a programming language that makes it easier to set up an installer without requiring users to have other stuff installed? or: 2) Is there some way to set up an installer that checks the system to see if it has java/.NET/whatever, and then includes java/.Net/whatever in the installation if it's not already there?
