  • Installing Ubuntu 12.04 on NUC intel i3 DC3217IYE

    System: NUC i3, 2 hdmi ports, ethernet, no wireless. UEFI boot 2x2gb ram 30gb mSATA internal drive Ubuntu 64bit 12.04.03 Hello i am having much trouble loading an OS on my NUC. I started out attempting another OS with various loaders (beast/hack) without much success,(various panics on boot or endless reboot loops, or graphics failures) after many tries i decided to attempt Ubuntu. Many years ago i loaded Ubuntu on an e-machine without an issue so i figured it would go smoothly, nothing could be further from the truth. The Live USB stick loads, but when i am installing the OS it always fails to load grub 2. Obviously it wont boot from SSD without grub2. I searched and found that Boot-repair should fix it...so i created a live usb with boot repair...it refuses to repair the grub because the install never finished and the needed partions are not fully created and flagged. It also demands an internet connection which i am unable to provide. I then ran gparted in an attempt to create the needed partitions manually, then re-ran boot repair turning off the "check internet" option. and disabling the re-install grub hoping it would create the missing directories and or fix the flags. it appeared to run successfully but upon return to the Ubuntu live USB it still fails at the grub2 install. also gparted doesnt have the same choices that Ubuntu install has when creating partitions, causing it to not recognize that i already had a root, or an EFI directory or it sometimes couldnt tell what the format of the partition was...all very annoying the reason i cant connect to internet (and cant upload the error logs) is the nuc only has Ethernet and the location i have to set up is too far away from modem. i can not move the monitor closer to modem as it is a 50inch LCD. I just want to do a basic install with one user acct and remote desktop (vnc) turned on so i can move the NUC to the modem connect via ethernet and then finish setting it up via Remote desktop/VNC chicken from my mac. While i await any assistance you maybe able to provide i am going to attempt to switch to the 32bit version and legacy boot to see if that can load grub. thnx again to anyone that can come up with a possible solution. i would love to hit "erase and install ubuntu" if anyone can figure out what is stopping that simple answer from working. Also disks (CD/DVD) are not an option as neither my Mac mini or my NUC have optical drives, and i have no desire to buy one for one task

    I'm using the following instruction to install and configure Hadoop on Ubuntu 10.10. http://www.michael-noll.com/tutorials/running-hadoop-on-ubuntu-linux-single-node-cluster/#installation I tried to save the compressed tar.gz file to /usr/local/ but it just won't save. I've tried saving the tar.gz in my home folder and desktop and copying the files to the desired folder, but I get an error that tells me I don't have permission. How do I save and extract a tar.gz folder to /usr/local/hadoop?

When I plug it into my Linux Mint 11 (katya), Gnome 32-bit computer, I get this error every I try to copy or move any file off of the card onto my desktop: Error splicing file: Input/output error I don't have the problem on a Windows Vista computer. It's looking for a ISO name of ubuntu-12.04.*dvd-i386.iso but the file I downloaded from the Ubuntu homepage is named ubuntu-12.04.1-desktop-i386.iso. Can I simply change the name of my ISO, or is there a difference in the ISO?

Now you can get a “sneak peak” at the real links behind those URLs with the View Thru extension for Google Chrome. The URL Shortening services officially supported at this time are: bit.ly, cli.gs, ff.im, goo.gl, is.gd, nyti.ms, ow.ly, post.ly, su.pr, & tinyurl.com. Before When you encounter a shortened URL you are pretty much on your own in deciding whether to trust that link or not. It would really be nice if you could just hover your mouse over those links and know where they will lead ahead of time. After Once you have the extension installed you are ready to access that link viewing goodness. Please note that you will need to reload any pages that were open prior to installing the extension. For our first example we chose a shortened URL from “bit.ly”. As you can see the entire link behind the shortened URL is displayed very nicely…no hidden surprises there!     Hi there, Over the weekend it looks like the DNS was hijacked on two of my domains. My set up is I have the sites registered on 1and1.co.uk, with dns nameservers pointing to Hostgator in the US where the sites are hosted. I also had cloudflare CDN running on the sites (via hostgator cpanel). My question is any ideas as to how this happened, and how I could either monitor it so I know if it occurs again, or strengthen the set up/service to minimise the risk. History: I received a ping from my site monitoring service that the sites were down. When I checked the sites were up so I assumed it was local to the monitoring service I received a ping last night the sites were up When I checked, one site was redirecting to download-manual.com (and checking that URL now, the home page is not the same as the one I saw, so they too may have been hijacked/hacked) The other site URL remained the same but had one of those standard site search pages which bounce you off to either phishing or paid for search sites I notified Hostgator who told me Cloudflare or 1and1 were the issue. I removed cloudflare, and contacted both them and hostgator, and am awaiting a response, but am not holding my breath. Is this common? I've never heard of this or come across this before. It's pretty scary that this can happen so easily. Appreciate any input. **Update: I've now spoken to support at 1and1, Hostgator, and Cloudflare, and each one claims it has nothing to do with them, and must be one of the others. Larry, curly, moe.

    If you're a Firefox user you know that if you have 10 tabs open and say you're in the tab #5. If you open a new tab which will become #11 in order and search something, after you finish and close this #11 tab Firefox will direct you the the last active tab you were in which is #5. Using Vimperator You won't get the similar effect. In the same scenario, while you're in tab #5 you can go t and search for something which will lead to opening a tab at #11. Now you press d and where you are now ? #10 and you need to ctrl+p all the way back to #5. So in this case I am looking for one of these solutions. to be able to open a tab straight after the current tab (which closing it will capital D will put me back to my active tab) a way to close a tab and being brought back to the last active tab that I worked on. Will appreciate it if somebody got a solution for this. thanks

  • How do I configure Ubuntu's web applications? [closed]

    Ubuntu 12.10 has introduced among other things web applications that add launcher widgets to show, for example, unread Gmail message counts, twitter tweets, etc. While sites that support those widgets show notifications offering to install them, I can't seem to find how to configure them. I'm particularly interested in configuring Google mail desktop notification widget to only display unread counts for my inbox, and dismiss all other labels.

  • A mechanism to include site title in every page, but not in <title> element

    Each site can have a name. For example, site x. Each page also can have a name (or a title) that should appear in <title> tag in the header. However, many websites out there use the combination site name - page name to provide the value for <title> tag. I find it a little far from being semantic. On the other hand, if you only include page title in <title> tag, search engines won't find your site by its name. For example, if your site's name is Thought Results and you don't include it in page titles, then if you search for Thought Results, you won't find your site in SERPs. Thus I'm searching for a mechanism to both include site title (not page title) in every page, and also only include page title in <title> tag to get more semantic results. Is there any way to achieve this?
