• Advice on developing a social network [on hold]

  I am doing research on assembling a team, using the right tools, and the cost to develop a highly responsive social network that is capable of dealing with a lot of users. Similar to the Facebook concept but using the basics package for now. Profile, friends, posts, updates, media upload/download, streaming, chat and Inbox messaging are all in the package. We certainly do not expect it to be as popular as Facebook or handle the same number of users and requests, but in its own game it has to be a monster, and expandable for later on. Neglecting the hosting, and servers part, i am looking for technical advise and opinions, on what kind of team i need ? how many developers ? their expertise ? What are the right tools ? languages ? frameworks ? environments ? Any random ideas about the infrastructure ? Quick thoughts on the development process ? Please use references, if you have any to support your ideas. Development cost mere estimation ? NEGLECTING THE COST OF SERVERS I know my question is too broad but my knowledge is very limited and i need detailed help, for any help you can offer i thank you in advance.

  Here is where you can find the sources of the latest and greatest NetBeans Gradle plugin: http://java.net/projects/nb-api-samples/sources/api-samples/show/versions/7.1/misc/GradleSupport To use it, download the sources above, open the sources into the IDE (which must be 7.1.1 or above), then you'll have a NetBeans module. Right-click it to run the module into a new instance of NetBeans IDE. In the Options window's Miscellaneous tab, there's a Gradle subtab for setting the Gradle location. In the New File dialog, in the Other category, you'll find a template named "Empty Gradle file". Make sure to name it "build" and to put it in the root directory of the application (by leaving the Folder field empty, you're specifying it should be created in the root directory). You'll then be able to expand the build.gradle file: Double-click a task to run it. When you open the file, it opens in the Groovy editor, if the Groovy editor is installed. When you make changes in the file, the list of tasks, shown above, is automatically recreated. It's at a really early stage of development and it would be great if developers out there would be interested in adding more features to it.

• Rhythmbox in Unity: sometimes cannot access GUI if run from command line, no command line support for .m3u/ .pls

  I previously was using Rhythmbox in 10.04 and recently installed it (version 2.90.1) in my system now running 11.10. I've discovered the following issues: Sometimes if I start Rhythmbox from the command line e.g. rhythmbox [uri of radio station], the GUI does not appear although I get the audio stream and I am not able to access the GUI when I click on the icon in the Unity launcher. Previously in 10.04, I was able to access the GUI after starting from command line by clicking the icon in the notification tray but it no longer appears there. Sometimes after running Rhythmbox from command line, when I click on the icon in the Unity launcher the GUI does not appear (even though I am clicking with the middle button on my mouse) and an icon-sized space appears under the Rhythmbox icon in the launcher. When I right click this space, I get a menu with a blank line followed by "Keep in launcher". Although I can play the uri's linking to .m3u and .pls files for radio streams in the GUI, they do not work in the command line. Instead I have to download the .m3u & .pls files to get the uri inside those files and use that as the argument instead when running from command line. Is there any way to fix these issues?

• Unresponsive Script window pops up all the time now. Why and what to do?

  I don't know that it's for the exact same script each time, it may be. A script on this page may be busy, or it may have stopped responding. You can stop the script now, or you can continue to see if the script will complete. Script: chrome://messenger/content/folderPane.js:721 This is in association with Thunderbird I think. This doesn't just happen after I've stepped away for a long time. It happens every time I click on anything. Things keep running that I'm clicking on. Just before this started as a constant problem, I was looking at addons etc, and something in Thunderbird deactivated an old or expired JavaScript. I clicked on the update for that and after a while I found the best choice on the list and clicked download. I don't know that anything happened with that and I moved away from addons etc area. The unresponsive script window started coming back all the time. Every time I clicked on something in Thunderbird and sometimes with Firefox. I turned off Firefox and restarted, but it didn't change. Shut down Firefox and computer restarted didn't change. The unresponsive script window is persistent now.

• Oracle R Distribution 2-13.2 Update Available

  Oracle has released an update to the Oracle R Distribution, an Oracle-supported distribution of open source R. Oracle R Distribution 2-13.2 now contains the ability to dynamically link the following libraries on both Windows and Linux: The Intel Math Kernel Library (MKL) on Intel chips The AMD Core Math Library (ACML) on AMD chips To take advantage of the performance enhancements provided by Intel MKL or AMD ACML in Oracle R Distribution, simply add the MKL or ACML shared library directory to the LD_LIBRARY_PATH system environment variable. This automatically enables MKL or ACML to make use of all available processors, vastly speeding up linear algebra computations and eliminating the need to recompile R.  Even on a single core, the optimized algorithms in the Intel MKL libraries are faster than using R's standard BLAS library. Open-source R is linked to NetLib's BLAS libraries, but they are not multi-threaded and only use one core. While R's internal BLAS are efficient for most computations, it's possible to recompile R to link to a different, multi-threaded BLAS library to improve performance on eligible calculations. Compiling and linking to R yourself can be involved, but for many, the significantly improved calculation speed justifies the effort. Oracle R Distribution notably simplifies the process of using external math libraries by enabling R to auto-load MKL or ACML. For R commands that don't link to BLAS code, taking advantage of database parallelism using embedded R execution in Oracle R Enterprise is the route to improved performance.   i recently tried installed java 7 on ubuntu 12.04 and i think i screwed something up I followed the instructions given here. First you need to remove openjdk for this run the following command from your terminal sudo apt-get purge openjdk* Now you can install Java7 by adding the following repository: sudo add-apt-repository ppa:eugenesan/java sudo apt-get update sudo apt-get install oracle-java7-installer Now everytime i install a new program i get the following error: Download done. sha256sum mismatch jdk-7u3-linux-x64.tar.gz Oracle JDK 7 is NOT installed. dpkg: error processing oracle-java7-installer (--configure): subprocess installed post-installation script returned error exit status 1 Setting up python-central (0.6.17ubuntu1) ... Setting up python-eggtrayicon (2.25.3-11) ... Setting up gmail-notify (1.6.1.1-1ubuntu1) ... Processing triggers for python-central ... Errors were encountered while processing: oracle-java7-installer Error in function: However.The program seems to install and work just fine so it doesn't seem to be a problem preventing me from doing anything So then i reinstalled openjdk by going: sudo apt-get install openjdk* But i still get the same error. going: sudo apt-get install oracle-java7-installer gives me the same error. What is going on? Please let me know if this is clear or not and ill try to explain my issue better

• HTML5 media loading sometimes suspends or aborts: misconfigured Apache?

  Recently, some code that has been working fine for months started to run unexpectedly. That code is just a media files loading JavaScript function, that uses jQuery. It's pretty long, but in essence it is like this: var $audio=$('<audio>'); $audio.on('canplaythrough',function(e){ $audio[0].play(); }); $audio.attr('src','song.ogg'); Basically, the file only loads sometimes, and sometimes stops loading with a suspend or even an abort event. I have uploaded a little testing HTML to http://www.joanbotella.com/tests/loading , where you can see what's happening. You can download the test files from http://www.joanbotella.com/tests/loading/loadingTest.zip for local testing. I have just checked that opening the test index.html file directly into Firefox, and not through my localhost Apache server, makes the audio files perfectly playable. So, I assume, my hosting and I have the Apache server misconfigured for serving media files. My software versions are: Apache 2.2.22-1ubuntu1.7 , Mozilla Firefox 31.0 , Chromium 36.0.1985.125 and jQuery 1.11.0. Can you help me? Thanks in advance!

• Can't install Skype on Ubuntu 12.04 64 bit

  I have written a shutdown script for transmission. Transmission calls the script after a torrent download finishes. The script runs perfectly on my machine (Ubuntu 11.04 & 12.04). #!/bin/bash sleep 300s # default display on current host DISPLAY=:0.0 # find out if monitor is on. Default timeout can be configured from screensaver/Power configuration. I would like to do that but after all downloads are completed. I want to put a 2nd check ( right after monitor check) if it is still downloading another torrent. Is there any way to do this?

• Windows 8 App Downloads Increasing + Over 5,000 Apps Available

  Windows 8 will be unleashed on the general public tomorrow and I thought it would be a good time to review some of the numbers I have been tracking over the last month. Downloads of Windows 8 Apps have been steadily increasing over the last month.  Below is screenshot from the App Summary page for my Windows 8 app.  The blue line is my app, while the orange line is average for the top 5 apps in that subcategory.  Considering the large gap between the 2, I think it is safe to assume that my app is NOT in the top 5 in the subcategory. The spike in the last couple of days is fairly dramatic and I am a little surprised by that.  I would have expected that kind of spike on the days following the official release as opposed to the days leading up to the release.   Finally, the all important App count.  There have been some stories floating around that the Window 8 Store is a ghost town and that there are no apps available.  I think these might be exaggerating the situation a little.  As of this morning, in the US store there are over 5000 apps available for download.  Obviously a far cry from the hundreds of thousands available in other app stores, but we are seeing solid growth in this number. Less than a month ago, that number was 2000. That means the store more than doubled in less than a month. If the growth continues, it won’t be long before the Widows 8 Store is filled with all the apps you need (and a whole lot you don’t need).

• Methodology To Determine Cause Of User Specific Error

  We have software that for certain clients fails to download a file. The software is developed in Python and compiled into an Windows Executable. The cause of the error is still unknown but we have established that the client has an active internet connection. We suspect that the cause is due to the clients network setup. This error cannot be replicated in house. What technique or methodology should be applied to this kind of specific error that cannot be replicated in house. The end goal is to determine the cause of this error so we can move onto the solution. For example; Remote Debugging: Produce a debug version of the software and ask the client to send back a debug output file. This involves alot of time (back and forth communication) and requires the client to work and act in a timely manor to be successful. In-house debugging: Visit the client and determine their network setup, etc. Possibly develop a series of script tests before hand to run on the clients computer under the same network. Other methodologies and techniques I am not aware of?

  As part of the Visual Studio 2012 CTP for September, Visual Studio got a little sexier at helping you discover and visualize your code. The introduction of the Code Map feature helps compliment the variety of other tools that are included with Visual Studio to help you analyze and visualize your projects and solutions. Code Map leverages the dgml format within Visual Studio that is currently used b the Architecture and Modeling tools. This is a nice addition that gets us from point A to point B a little faster. The great thing about Code Map is that you can gain access to the functionality from directly within your code from the context menu. This Code Map functionality is also context specific based on your cursor. You can evaluate and add items such as methods and variables directly to the Code Map window. As you add items the Code Map surface is updated to show your new item plus any relationships and dependencies that have been introduced in your code. Something that is also very nice is that the Code Map surface is interactive and allows you to use the F12 button (Go To Definition) which can help you navigate your code especially is you are adding items that span multiple files or projects. • How can I use the dualforward parameter in my unity shader to use lightmaps and normal maps together?

  I'm using the free version of unity and I would like to combine lightmaps with specularity and normal maps. After doing a -bunch- of research, I've figured out that there doesn't seem to be any easy way to do this in the free version of unity, which doesn't support deferred rendering/easy use of dual lightmaps. However, it looks like it's possible, by writing a custom shader, using the "dualforward" parameter in a shader, switching the lightmapping mode to "dual lightmaps" and turning on "Use in forward ren."   Would you like an easy way to minimize apps to the System Tray in Windows and keep your Taskbar clear of clutter? Then all you need is the MoveToTray app to make it happen. MoveToTray does not require installation. Just double click on the exe file or create a shortcut to the app to activate it. When you see the icon for MoveToTray appear in the System Tray you are ready to minimize those apps. To minimize the active app window use the keyboard shortcut “Ctrl + Alt + M” and watch it instantly disappear to the System Tray. To maximize the window simply double click on the app’s icon in the System Tray. Sometimes an app’s regular icon will not display in the System Tray and a copy of MoveToTray’s icon will appear in its’ place (i.e. Paint.NET in our example). • Deleting Unused Swaps Partions

  Good evening everyone , I got a little issue with Swap Partitions. Due to some issues after installing Ubuntu first time, I reinstalled it and now I have 3 Swaps.
