• Manually closing a port from commandline

  Hi I want to close an open port which is in listening mode between my client and server application. Is there any manual command line option in Linux to close a port ?? NOTE: I came to know that "only the application which owns the connected socket should close it, which will happen when the application terminates." I dont understand why it is only possible by the application which opens it ... But still eager to know if there is any another way to do it ??

• Memory (flash) cards secure delete (have to use algorithms or just delete?)

  We all know that if you want to completely delete files from HDD, you have to use a special erase algorithm in order to make it impossible to read it back. But what with the memory cards? Do they need the same algorithms to ensure that no one could read it back? (it has a completely different structure to store data, and I don't know what the case here with secure delete)

• Immersed versus 'normal' version of chrome

  I installed chrome, and now I have 2 ways to open chrome: if I open chrome from the metro-tile menu, I get the full-screen, immersed, windows-8 style chrome. If I start the link I got on my desktop, I get the windowed version. Apart from the fact that I would like to know how I might do that on purpose, I also want to know what's going on so I can use the windowed version (I prefer that for a browser) from all links I have, especially the one in the menu.

  What is it that Windows is doing when it shuts down? Assuming I've saved everything, what negative impact does powering down instead of shutting down properly have?   Is there a command line tool that will simply evaluate a cron expression and return a bool response if it is supposed to be running right now? I'm looking for something I can use as a utility in another bash script. • Tool for logging NIC link state events.

  Intel NICs have a driver option (in Windows) that will log link state events to the system log, so if the network drops out periodically you can determine that fact. Does anyone know of a simple generic solution that does this, in other words one that is not part of the driver from a particular manufacturer?   Hi, I am translating some po-files and I would like to run a spell checker over them. I have Ubuntu 10.10 and use gtranslator. As far as I know, gtranslator can't spellcheck the whole file. I tried ispell: $ ispell lordsawar-0.2.0-pre4.de.po - this doesn't work, as English and German strings, as well as some programming-relevant comments appear in the .po-file. Do you know any program running on Ubuntu which can spell check po-files?
