• Some Oracle VM 3 updates

  Today we did another patch set update for Oracle VM 3 (3.0.3-build 227). This can be downloaded from My Oracle Support as patch ID 14736185. There are quite a few updates in here and I highly recommend any Oracle VM 3 customer or user to install this update. This patch can be installed on top of Oracle VM 3.0 versions 3.0.2 and 3.0.3. The patch is cumulative for 3.0.3. So if you already installed patch update 1 (3.0.3-150) then this will just be incremental on top of that and brings you to 3.0.3-build 227. There is a readme file which contains the patchlist in the patch info. Or you will find them here. I also did an update of my Oracle VM utilities to 0.4.0. They are also available from My Oracle Support, patch ID 14736239. These utils can be unzipped and installed on the server running Oracle VM Manager. Typically in /u01/app/oracle/ovm-manager-3/ovm_utils. There is a set of man pages in /u01/app/oracle/ovm-manager-3/ovm_utils/man/man8. There now are 6 commands : ovm_vmcontrol : VM level operations ovm_servercontrol : server level operations ovm_vmdisks : virtual disk/physical location mapping for VM disks ovm_vmmessage : message passing utility between the manager and the VM tools (in the Oracle VM templates) ovm_repocontrol : repository level operations ovm_poolcontrol : pool level operations Some of the new changes : at a pool level, acknowledge events and cascade to servers and virtual machines with outstanding events at a pool level, do a rescan of the storage for fibrechannel/iscsi disks if you add new devices (it does this operation then on every running server) at a repository level, fixup a device if it had a failed create repository at a repository level, refresh the repository and this will update the free space in the UI for ocfs2 repositories at a server level, acknowledge server events and cascade to virtual machines if needed at a VM level, acknowledge VM events at a VM level, bind vcpus to cores with vcpuset/vcpuget Please see the man pages and remember that these tools are just written As Is - no SRs... • A Consol Application or Windows Application in VS 2010 for Sharepoint 2010 : A common Error

  I have seen many Sharepoint Newbies cracking their head to create a Console/Windows  application in VS2010 and make it talk to Sharepoint 2010 Server. I had the same problem when i started with Sharepoint in the begining. It is important for you to acknowledge that SharePoint 2010 is based on .NET Framework version 3.5 and not version 4.0. In VS 2010 when you create a Console/Windows application, Make Sure you select .Net Framework 3.5 in the New Project Dialog Window.If you have missed while creating new Project Go to the Application tab of project properties and verify that .NET Framework Version 3.5 is select as the Target Framework. Now that you have selected the correct framework, will it work? Nope if the application is configured as x86 one it will not work. Sharepoint is a 64 Bit application and when you create a windows application to talk to Sharepoint it should also be a 64 Bit one. Go to Configuration Manager, Select x64. If x64 is not available select <New…> and in the New Solution Platform dialog box select x64 as the new platform copying settings from x86 and checking the Create new project platforms check box. This is not applicable if you are making a console application to talk to sharepoint with Client Object Model.

• Database Security: The First Step in Pre-Emptive Data Leak Prevention

  With WikiLeaks raising awareness around information leaks and the harm they can cause, many organization are taking stock of their own information leak protection (ILP) strategies in 2011. A report by IDC on data leak prevention stated: Increasing database security is one of the most efficient and cost-effective measures an organization can take to prevent data leaks. By utilizing the data protection, access control, account management, encryption, log management, and other security controls inherent in the database management system, entities can institute first-level control over the widest range of protected information. As a central repository for unstructured data, which is growing at leaps and bounds, the database should be the first layer providing information leakage protection. Unfortunately, most organizations are not taking sufficient steps to protect their databases according to a survey of the Independent Oracle User Group. For example, any operating system administrator or database administrator can access the all the data stored in the database in most organizations. Without any kind of auditing or monitoring. And it's not just administrators, database users can typically access the database with ad-hoc query tools from their desktop and by-pass any application level controls. Despite numerous regulations calling for controls to limit the powers of insiders, most organizations still put too many privileges in the hands of their employees. Time and time again these excess privileges have backfired. Internal agents were implicated in almost half of data breaches according to the Verizon Data Breach Investigations Report and the rate is rising. Hackers also took advantage of these excess privileges very successfully using stolen credentials and SQL injection attacks. But back to the insiders. Who are these insiders and why do they do it? In 2002, the U.S. Secret Service (USSS) behavioral psychologists and CERT information security experts formed the Insider Threat Study team to examine insider threat cases that occurred in US critical infrastructure sectors, and examined them from both a technical and a behavioral perspective. A series of fascinating reports has been published as a result of this work. You can learn more by watching the ISSA Insider Threat Web Conference. So as your organization starts to look at data leak prevention over the coming year, start off by protecting your data at the source - your databases. • VS2010 Launch Presentations

  Last week I was in Vegas to present at the DevConnections / VS2010 Launch event.  The show was well-attended and everybody I spoke to agreed it was educational and enjoyable.  My three talks were all on Wednesday, 14 April 2010, including one at 8am for which I was impressed to see a large turnout in attendance.   Pragmatic ASP.NET Tips, Tricks, and Tools My first session was on tips, tricks, and tools for ASP.NET developers.  This is a talk Ive given in past years, but which I refine every time.  I usually like to have a full session to devote to tools, and a separate talk just for Tips and Tricks, but for this show I was only given the one 75-minute slot, so I had to cut some materials to make things fit.  The talk went well, all the demos work, and the attendees seemed to enjoy it, and I like giving it, so hopefully I can continue to present on this topic in future DevConnections shows. • repo sync "CyanogenMod/android_prebuilt" size and resume capability.?

  I'm downloading CyanogenMod-10.1 source on a low speed broadband. About 4GB of source is downloaded . In that 4GB, there is a big project "CyanogenMod/android_frameworks_base" which alone took 1GB of download without any interruption. Ok now, after 4GB of download, my internet got disconnected and I had to stop (ctrl + z) repo sync while it was downloading the project "CyanogenMod/android_prebuilt". Before I stopped repo sync the android_prebuilt got downloaded till 250MB and is at 42percent. I checked the working folder and there is a file "tmp_pack_df5CKb" of size 250MB in the path "$WORKING_DIR/.repo/projects/prebuilt.git/objects/pack/" . Then I restarted repo sync and it was downloading the android_prebuilt project. But I'm not sure if it was downloading from start or resuming from 250MB. While downloading this time , the previous "tmp_pack_df5CKb" isn't deleted and the content is being downloaded to a new file "tmp_pack_HPfvFG". I heard repo sync cannot be resumed for a project. But here, since the previous file isn't deleted I want to ask if android_prebuilt is resuming or downloading from start again? Now that my high speed internet is over (current speed 256kbps), I'm not sure if I can download the remaining ~4GB if single project is in size 500 MB.

• Which Open Source Licenses can address concerns for an Open Source Game Engine?

  I am on a team that is looking to open source an engine we are building. It's intended as an engine for Online RPG style games. We're writing it to work on both desktops and android platforms. I've been over to the OSI http://opensource.org/licenses/category to check out the most common licenses. However, this will be my first time going into an open source project and I wanted to know if the community had some insight into which licenses might be best suited. Key licensing concerns: Removing or limiting our liability (most already seem to cover this, but stating for completeness). We want other developers to be able to take part or all of our project and use it in their own projects with proper accreditation to our project. Licensing should not hinder someone's ability to quickly use the engine. They should be able to download a release and start using it without needing to wait on licensing issues. Game content (gfx, sound, etc.) that is not part of the engine should be allowed to be licensed separately. If someone is using our engine, they can retain full copy right of their content, including engine generated data. Our primary goal is exposure, which is why we're going open source to start with. Both for the project and for the individuals developing it. Are there any licenses that can require accreditation visible to players? While I'd put our primary goal as exposure, for licensing the accreditation is less of a concern. From what I've read through (and have been able to understand) it doesn't seem like any of the licenses cover anything that is produced by the licensed software. Are there any that state this specifically, or does simply not mentioning it leave it open for other licensing? Are there any other concerns that we should consider? Has anyone had any issues using any of these licenses?

• SVN, Samba and Symbolic Links. How to get them all to play together?

  I've got a website project under version control that relies on files from an unversioned directory on the same server via Symbolic Links. I'm currently storing the symbolic links in the repository. The idea is that if someone checks out a working copy on to the same server they can edit and test the working copy of the project before committing it back to the repository. When they checkout their working copy it successfully sets up the symlinks so that the entire site works when testing. The users that work on the project are Windows users, so I've set a samba shares on the server and then mapped them to network drives in Windows. People can edit their working copies directly on the server via network shares and then test them in the web browser before committing their changes back to the repository via TortoiseSVN. The Problem The problem I have is that Samba resolves the symlinks as expected but when a user tries to commit their changes back to the repository, TortoiseSVN thinks the linked files are part of the project and tries to commit the target files to the repository and not the symlinks themselves. I tried turning off symlink support in samba which means that the linked files cannot be resolved as I don't really want people to have access to the linked files nor do I want to import the linked files in the repository. The problem with this is that I get Can't stat '\webserver\projects\working\project\symlinked_file.php'. Access is denied Apart from the symlink problem everything else works 100% perfectly. Users can either checkout website projects to their machine and work on them (but can't test) or checkout them out to their space on the dev web server and work on them and fully test. So I don't want to change the workflow process, I just need a solution to the symbolic link issue. Many thanks. • How do you name your projects?

  Naming is hard. Really, really hard. Even StackExchange is a prime example of this -- remember the huge domain name controversy that occurred when SE sites first started graduating? Anyway, I've got a project I'm working on but I have no idea what to name it! This simple fact has caused production to cease, because I'm at the point where I want to create repositories and database tables, and I don't want to name everything "Untitled project" and have to change potentially hundreds of lines of code in the future. Also, I would like to collaborate with others but it's difficult to be taken seriously if I refer to this as "some project I'm working on." It makes it seem like a new project in its infancy and doesn't garner a lot of interest. Just the simple fact act of having a name will make a huge impact in how it registers in others' minds. How do you guys name your projects? This particular one is a website, so not only do I need to find a good name, I need to find one with an available domain, which is next to impossible these days. How do you brainstorm? Who do you talk to (or not talk to)? Is there an "eureka!" moment when you stumble across something that works?

• Apache refusing to change DocumentRoot

  I've installed Zend Server CE 5.1.0 on Windows 7 Ultimate 64 bit in its default location, meaning the path to my htdocs is C:\Program Files (x86)\Zend\Apache2\htdocs. Not something that I would like to type each time I check out a project from SVN in Eclipse or something. I'd like to set the DocumentRoot to a different folder, namely D:\www. What I've done I edited conf/httpd.conf, with the significant lines being: DocumentRoot "D:\www" <Directory "D:\www"> Options Indexes FollowSymLinks AllowOverride All Order allow,deny Allow from all </Directory> Include conf/extra/httpd-vhosts.conf I edited conf/extra/httpd-vhosts.conf to add a virtual host: NameVirtualHost *:80 <VirtualHost *:80> DocumentRoot D:\www ServerName localhost ServerAlias localhost SetEnv APPLICATION_ENV development SetEnv APPLICATION_DOMAIN localhost </VirtualHost> <VirtualHost *:80> DocumentRoot D:\www\UmbraCMS ServerName umbracms.local ServerAlias umbracms.local SetEnv APPLICATION_ENV development SetEnv APPLICATION_DOMAIN umbracms.local </VirtualHost> I edited C:\Windows\System32\drivers\etc\hosts to add this line: 127.0.0.1 umbracms.local And I also added a PHP project to D:\www\UmbraCMS. And restarted Apache. Actually, I restarted the computer, too, just in case. What's supposed to happen After typing http://umbracms.local/ in the browser's address bar, I want to see my PHP project launch, obviously. What's actually happening No matter whether whether I type http://umbracms.local/ or http://localhost/, I'm taken to the test zend page, located in C:\Program Files (x86)\Zend\Apache2\htdocs\index.html, as if neither DocumentRoot was changed nor name-based virtual hosting worked. Interestingly, when I put another project in C:\Program Files (x86)\Zend\Apache2\htdocs\bugraid\ and then, in the browser, typed http://localhost/bugraid, the project actually opened, or at least tried to, as it completely ignored the project's .htaccess file. Extra considerations Zend Server's Apache version is 2.2.16, PHP version is 5.3.0 I've installed MySQL CE 5.5.13 separately, and it works, both from command line and via MySQL Workbench. I have XAMPP installed, but none of its components are started up. It's got its own install of Apache 2.2.17 and MySQL 5.5.1. PHP version is 5.3.5 (I think). Question Have you had a similar situation before? What else might need taking care of in order to have Zend Server's Apache use D:\www as document root for my PHP projects?

  Before I became a consultant all I cared about was becoming a highly skilled programmer. Now I believe that what my clients need is not a great hacker, coder, architect... or whatever. I am more and more convinced every day that there is something of greater value. Everywhere I go I discover practices where I used to roll my eyes in despair. I saw the software industry with pink glasses and laughed or cried at them depending on my mood. I was so convinced everything could be done better. Now I believe that what my clients desperately need is finding a balance between good engineering practices and desperate project execution. Although a great design can make a project cheap to maintain thought many years, usually it is more important to produce quick fast and cheap, just to see if the project can succeed. Before that, it does not really matters that much if the design is cheap to maintain, after that, it might be too late to improve things. They need people who get involved, who do some clandestine improvements into the project without their manager approval/consent/knowledge... because they are never given time for some tasks we all know are important. Not all good things can be done, some of them must come out of freewill, and some of them must be discussed in order to educate colleagues, managers, clients and ourselves. Now my big question is. What exactly are the skills and practices aside from great coding that can provide real value to the economical success of software projects? (and not the software architecture alone)

• Is anyone doing "real" TDD with Visual-C++, and if yes, how do they do it?

  Test Driven Development implies writing the test before the code and following a certain cycle: Write Test Check Test (run) Write Production Code Check Test (run) Clean up Production Code Check test (run) As far as I'm concerned, this is only possible if your development solution allows you to very quickly switch between the production and test code, and to execute the test for a certain production code part extremely quickly. Now, while there exist lots of Unit Testing Frameworks for C++ (I'm using Bost.Test atm.) it does seem that there doesn't really exist any decent (for native C++) Visual Studio (Plugin) solution that makes the TDD cycle bearable regardless of framework used. "Bearable" means that it's a one-click action to run a test for a certain cpp file without having to manually set up a separate testing project etc. "Bearable" also means that a simple test starts (linking!) and runs very quickly. So, what tools (plugins) and techniques are out there that make the TDD cycle possible for native C++ development with Visual Studio? Note: I'm fine with free or "commercial" tools. Please: No framework recommendations. (Unless the framework has a dedicated Visual Studio plugin and you want to recommend the plugin.) Edit Note: The answers so far have provided links on how to integrate a Unit Testing framework into Visual Studio. The resources more or less describe how to get the UT framework to compile and get your first Tests running. This is not what this question is about. I'm of the opinion that to really work productively, having the Unit Tests in a manually maintained(!), separate vcproj from your production classes will add so much overhead that TDD "isn't possible". As far as I am aware, you do not add extra "projects" to a Java or C# thing to enable Unit Tests and TDD, and for a good reason. This should be possible with C++ given the right tools, but it seems (this question is about) that there are very little tools for TDD/C++/VS. Googling around, I've found one tool, VisualAssert, that seems to aim in the right direction. However, afaiks, it doesn't seem to be in widespread use (compared to CppUnit, Boost.Test etc.). Edit: I would like to add a comment to the context for this question. I think it does a good summary of outlining (part of) the problem: (comment by Billy ONeal) Visual Studio does not use "build scripts" that are reasonably editable by the user. One project produces one binary. Moreover, Java has the property that Java never builds a complete binary -- the binary you build is just a ZIP of the class files. Therefore it's possible to compile separately then JAR together manually (using e.g. 7z). C++ and C# both actually link their binaries, so generally speaking you can't write a script like that. The closest you can get is to compile everything separately and then do two linkings (one for production, one for testing).
