• mod-rewrite to ignore the subdomain

  I'm using a mod-rewrite for pretty URLs, meant to run on the domain root. Working fine but now I'm trying to make it run on a subdomain and it keeps giving "500 Internal Server Error". The subdomain automatically redirects to the folder with that name on my hosting account (sub.domain.com shows the content of domain.com/sub/). Does it fail because this request is already being mod-rewritten automatically or can I simply change something in the htaccess to address the subdomain instead? • NoClassDefFoundError points to the wrong class.

  I'm validating the installation of a program that consists of a few separate modules. They are not co-dependent. I have apple.jar and orange.jar, they are placed in the same folder and were developed in the same project, but run independent of each other. Running apple.jar goes fine, but orange.jar gives me a NoClassDefFoundError pointing to apple.jar. /usr/java/jre1.6.0_14/bin/java -jar validator.jar Exception in thread "main" java.lang.NoClassDefFoundError: orange/client/Apple Caused by: java.lang.ClassNotFoundException: orange.client.Apple at java.net.URLClassLoader$1.run(Unknown Source) at java.security.AccessController.doPrivileged(Native Method) at java.net.URLClassLoader.findClass(Unknown Source) at java.lang.ClassLoader.loadClass(Unknown Source) at sun.misc.Launcher$AppClassLoader.loadClass(Unknown Source) at java.lang.ClassLoader.loadClass(Unknown Source) at java.lang.ClassLoader.loadClassInternal(Unknown Source) Could not find the main class: validator/client/StormDataXMLGenerator. • How and why do I set up a C# build machine?

  Hi all, I'm working with a small (4 person) development team on a C# project. I've proposed setting up a build machine which will do nightly builds and tests of the project, because I understand that this is a Good Thing. Trouble is, we don't have a whole lot of budget here, so I have to justify the expense to the powers that be. So I want to know: What kind of tools/licenses will I need? Right now, we use Visual Studio and Smart Assembly to build, and Perforce for source control. Will I need something else, or is there an equivalent of a cron job for running automated scripts? What, exactly, will this get me, other than an indication of a broken build? Should I set up test projects in this solution (sln file) that will be run by these scripts, so I can have particular functions tested? We have, at the moment, two such tests, because we haven't had the time (or frankly, the experience) to make good unit tests. What kind of hardware will I need for this? Once a build has been finished and tested, is it a common practice to put that build up on an ftp site or have some other way for internal access? The idea is that this machine makes the build, and we all go to it, but can make debug builds if we have to. How often should we make this kind of build? How is space managed? If we make nightly builds, should we keep around all the old builds, or start to ditch them after about a week or so? Is there anything else I'm not seeing here? I realize that this is a very large topic, and I'm just starting out. I couldn't find a duplicate of this question here, and if there's a book out there I should just get, please let me know. EDIT: I finally got it to work! Hudson is completely fantastic, and FxCop is showing that some features we thought were implemented were actually incomplete. We also had to change the installer type from Old-And-Busted vdproj to New Hotness WiX. Basically, for those who are paying attention, if you can run your build from the command line, then you can put it into hudson. Making the build run from the command line via MSBuild is a useful exercise in itself, because it forces your tools to be current.

• Silverlight data-driven application with NHibernate

  Hi Guys, this is more of a subjective Question, but I'll ask it anyway. I'm about to develop a very data-centric application that has to run inside the browser. The frontend will be Silverlight, backed by a Fluent NHibernate service that runs server side. The problem here is: Wherever I look for data-driven silverlight app I wind up finding Silverlight RIA services examples, but nothing on how to build this without some ADO.NET stuff involved. I have little to no knowledge in WCF so far, but from the limited research I did it seems like WCF is pretty much the only way to let the client talk to the server. Are there any tutorials/best practices on how to write a Silverlight MVVM app that provides CRUD for a non-EF database? Suggestions would be very much appreciated. Thanks PS: I can't use .NET remoting. The backend has to run on IIS6 :(

• SQL Server 2000 DTS Package Failing with "The number of failing rows exceeds the maximum specified"

  I have inherited a SQL Server 2000 DTS package that migrates data from SQL Server to Oracle. This package moves about 20 tables' data to Oracle every night with no transformations, and it is then transformed by a set of SPs and used by a GIS application. Twice this week, during the migration between SQL Server and Oracle, the package has failed with "The number of failing rows exceeds the maximum specified". It has failed on a different table each time, though. Each time it's failed, we've rerun the process the next morning and it has worked. Because the process works the second time it's run, it makes me think the data is being changed by someone or something between the initial failure and our successful second run. I would like to change the DTS package to log the failing rows in a text document so we can compare them later. Can someone help me with that? I can't seem to figure that part out. Scott

• SQL Encryption - Asymmetric Key - 2nd Server

  Hello, I created an asymmetric key on one of my SQL servers (2008). I encrypted a password field and I am able to retrieve that password just fine on my development server. The issue comes into play where I need to move this data to a production server. Here is the code for the key that was created: CREATE MASTER KEY ENCRYPTION BY PASSWORD='#########' CREATE ASYMMETRIC KEY UserEncryptionKey WITH ALGORITHM = RSA_2048 Now, when I run this on the production server, it creates the key just fine. However, when I run my sproc to get the password, it returns NULL. SQL: SELECT EncryptByAsymKey(AsymKey_ID('UserEncryptionKey'), Password ) FROM Users WHERE UserName = '######' Any thoughts on what I need to do to get the encrypted field to work on multiple SQL Servers? • Autoconf, Libtool shared and static library

  I am using autoconf gnu tools to build my product. It generates both the shared as well as static library for any library where *.la is mentioned. The issue is if you use .la to link your binary in Makefile.am. It links with the dynamic library but when you use ldd to the binary, it says "not a dynamic executable" although it links with shared library. I proved it by removing the shared library after the binary is built and then tried to run the binary. It didn't find the shared library and couldn't run. Another question is how to put library in a specified location using Makefile.am direction ?

• eclipse: how to debug a Java program as a .jar file?

  I use ant for creating .jar files in Eclipse. Works great. I have a .jar file I am working on that expects the code to be in a .jar file (it looks for .properties files in the same directory as the .jar file) -- the standard Eclipse "Run" and "Debug" menus execute the main() method of a specified Java class... but they do it from the directory containing the compiled class files, not a jar file. Is there a way to change this behavior so Eclipse runs code from the appropriate .jar file instead? (My workaround right now is to run the .jar file externally, with it suspended waiting for a debugger, per Dave Ray's answer to one of my other questions.)

• Is eclipse's Garbage Collector different than the default?

  From questions posted here and an old one of mine I have created the impression that you cannot explicitly run the Java Garbage Collector whenever you please. If you call it, you simply instruct the system to call it whenever it can or thinks is appropriate. But in eclipse, if you press the "Run Garbage Collector" button you see an immediate reduction in memory usage. How is that possible? Is eclipse using a different Garbage Collector, does it have access to some secret API that we don't or is my conception of how the GC works wrong?

• Record locking problem between linux and Windows

  I need to run a bunch of old DOS FoxPro / Clipper applications in linux under DOSEMU. The programs access their "databases" located on a network server (could be a Windows or Linux server) Actually, the programs ran fine, but I cannot manage to make the record locking work as supposed: I can run a program in two terminals (or the server and any terminal for instance) and lock the same record in both. Now, I'm using Tiny Core Linux as terminal and Windows XP as server, accesing the shared files via CIFS and the latest DOSEMU (1.4.0), but I tried with various combinations of server (Ubuntu 7 to 9, Damn Small Linux, XP) <- protocol (CIFS, samba, various versions of smbclient) <- client (same as server) with no luck I tried to configure the server part to work without oplocks in samba (after reading the entire O'Reilly Samba book locking chapter in http://oreilly.com/catalog/samba/chapter/book/ch05_05.html ) and in XP (\HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\LanmanServer\Parameters\UseOpportunisticLocking = 0) but the problem persist.   I want to perform "deep copies" of an STL container of pointers to polymorphic classes. I know about the Prototype design pattern, implemented by means of the Virtual Ctor Idiom, as explained in the C++ FAQ Lite, Item 20.8. It is simple and straightforward: struct ABC // Abstract Base Class { virtual ~ABC() {} virtual ABC * clone() = 0; }; struct D1 : public ABC { virtual D1 * clone() { return new D1( *this ); } // Covariant Return Type }; A deep copy is then: for( i = 0; i < oldVector.size(); ++i ) newVector.push_back( oldVector[i]->clone() ); Drawbacks As Andrei Alexandrescu states it: The clone() implementation must follow the same pattern in all derived classes; in spite of its repetitive structure, there is no reasonable way to automate defining the clone() member function (beyond macros, that is). Moreover, clients of ABC can possibly do something bad. (I mean, nothing prevents clients to do something bad, so, it will happen.) Better design? My question is: is there another way to make an abstract base class clonable without requiring derived classes to write clone-related code? (Helper class? Templates?) Following is my context. • RoR app running on mongrel development but not production

  Hello all, This is my first stab at Ruby on Rails. Just deployed a very simple app to Heroku. The thing is that my app runs flawlessly on mongrel development; When I run it with "mongrel_rails start -e production" however, I get the error "We're sorry, but something went wrong." For the life of me, I couldn't debug this. Heroku logs is not returning anything, the Exceptional addon in Heroku is not returning anything, and I cannot find mongrel.log on my Windows machine (when I run mongrel using: mongrel_rails start -e production -d" I'm using Rails 2.3.5 and sqlite3 with bundler to pack my gems. I was told that probably rails is not booting up correctly. I can't find any other way to diagnose this. Any ideas? Thanks, ANaimi

• Looking for an Open Source Project in need of help

  Hi StackOverflow! I'm a CS student on well on my way to graduate. I have had a difficult time of finding relevant student jobs (they seems to be taken merely hours after the notice gets on the board) , so instead I'm looking for an open source project in need of help. I'm aware that I should choose one that I use, but I'm not aware of any OS-project that I use that needs help. That's why I'm asking you. I don't have any deep experience, but I here are some of my biggest projects so far: BitTorrent-ish client in Python (a subset of BitTorrent) HTTP 1.1 webserver in Java Compiler from a subset of Java to run on JRE Flash-framework project to model an iPad look and feel (not to run actual iPad programs) complete with an API for programs. Complete MySQL database for a booking system, with departure and arrival times, so you could only book valid tickets (with a Java frontend). I know, Java and languages like AS3 and C# feels natural per se, Python, and have done a fair bit of hacking around in C, but I don't feel very comfortable with it. Mostly I'm afraid to make a fuckup because I have such a high degree of control. I would like to think I'm well aware of good software design practices, but in reality what I do is ask myself "would I like to use/maintain this?", and I love to refactor my code because I see optimizations. I love algorithms and to make them run in the best possible time. I don't have any preferred domain to work in, but I wouldn't mind it to be graphics or math heavy. Ideally I'm looking for a project in C++ to learn the in's and out's of it, but I'm well aware that I don't know that language very well. I would like to have a mentor-like figure until I'm confident enough to stand on my own, not one to review all my code (I'm sure someone will to start with anyway), but to ask questions about the project and language in question. I do have a wife and two children, so don't expect me to put in 10+ hours every week. In return I can work on my own, I strive to program modular and maintainable code. Know how to read an API, use Google, StackOverflow and online resources in general. If you have any questions, shoot. I'm looking forward to your suggestions.

• How to use startMethodTracing APIs on Android?

  I have recently started working on an app which has both Java and native components. I am trying to generate trace information for both components using Debug.startMethodTracing("myapp") and Debug.startNativeTracing() alternately. However, both are behaving unexpectedly. When I use Debug.startMethodTracing("myapp"), I can see a file /sdcard/myapp.trace being created but it is always empty no matter how long I run my app. When I use Debug.startNativeTracing() and start the emulator with the -trace <tracename> switch, I see a message saying "Trace started", but when I try to run my app, the emulator crashes. Am I missing something obvious here? How do I debug this problem?

  At work we currently have a custom in-house built winforms app for the business users to view reports. It has role-based security and several administrator functions. My boss is thinking about getting me to port this app to webforms. My question is, are there options other than custom built winforms and webforms apps for deploying/viewing/administrating Crystal Reports at an enterprise level (role-based security, easy report deployment, etc)? I'm thinking about third-party packages or perhaps applications provided by Microsoft/Business Objects/SAP? We are using Crystal Reports 11.5.

• Relative Position in PHP between 2 points (Lat/Long)

  I have a database of airports with Latitude and Longitude for each point. I want to run a PHP script to find all airports that are nearby a given airport, with their distance and relative direction. I.e. for Airport KLDJ (40-37-02.810N 074-14-40.539W) Airport Nearby KJFK - John F Kennedy Airport (21.2 nm NE) (40-38-23.104N 073-46-44.132W) I have used code from http://www.movable-type.co.uk/scripts/latlong.html to find distance, and tried to use it to find bearing, which might not be right. //BEARING RHUMB LINE $phi = log(tan($lat2/2+pi/4)/tan($lat1/2+pi/4)); $distance['bearing'] = (rad2deg(atan2($theta, $phi)) +180) % 360; I basically want to run all points through this script and find the distance, which I have already, but then the direction. (i.e. N, S, W, E, NW, SW, NE, SE)

• Restart Delphi Application Programmatically

  It should not be possible to run multiple instances of my application. Therefore the project source contains: CreateMutex (nil, False, PChar (ID)); if (GetLastError = ERROR_ALREADY_EXISTS) then Halt; Now I want to restart my application programmatically. The usual way would be: AppName := PChar(Application.ExeName) ; ShellExecute(Handle,'open', AppName, nil, nil, SW_SHOWNORMAL) ; Application.Terminate; But this won't work in my case because of the mutex. Even if I release the mutex before starting the second instace it won't work because shutdown takes some time and two instance cannot run in parallel (because of common resources and other effects). Is there a way to restart an application with such characteristics? (If possible without an additional executable) Thanks in advance.

• Possible to distribute an MPI (C++) program accross the internet rather than within a LAN cluster?

  Hi there, I've written some MPI code which works flawlessly on large clusters. Each node in the cluster has the same cpu architecture and has access to a networked (i.e. 'common') file system (so that each node can excecute the actual binary). But consider this scenario: I have a machine in my office with a dual core processor (intel). I have a machine at home with a dual core processor (amd). Both machines run linux, and both machines can successfully compile and run the MPI code locally (i.e. using 2 cores). Now, is it possible to link the two machines together via MPI, so that I can utilise all 4 cores, bearing in mind the different architectures, and bearing in mind the fact that there are no shared (networked) filesystems? If so, how? Thanks, Ben.
