Is it advisable to do what Im doing? can you give me advice on what i should do first to enhance my learning curve?   My friend is a project manager for a software company. The most frustrating thing for him is that his engineers frequently leave their jobs. The company works hard to recruit new engineers, transfer projects, and keep a stable quality product. When people leave, it drives my friend crazy. These engineers are quite young and ambitious, and they want higher salaries and better positions. The big boss only thinks about it in financial terms, and his theory is that “three newbies are always better than one veteran” (which, as an experienced engineer, I know is wrong). My friend hates that theory. Any advice for him?

• What technology to use for turn-based game server? [closed]

  If I create a mobile turn-based game which could consist from 2 up to 6 players. I expect the server to support for about hundreds of game. And I aim for something free and not costly technology. What software and hardware recommendation would be enough for me? I've found some game server engine such as photon. But is it too much for a simple game? I'm thinking of using REST technology with F3 PHP server and Mysql. Will it be adequate? Will only one physical server enough? What is the hardware recommendation for the server?

• Menu to let me choose OS to run in a dual boot machine

  I recently re-imaged my Dell PC to dual-install Windows 7 and Ubuntu 12.04.1 LTS. The dual-boot was a success, since I was able to start whichever OS I wanted. Now, I installed some software (the OpenJDK package) on the Ubuntu side of the PC. Upon restarting Ubuntu, I unfortunately lost the ability to choose the OS that I wanted to run (i.e., Ubuntu). Ordinarily, I'd expect to: 1. Hit the power button 2. A menu (Grub?) shows up listing all OSs installed in the PC (namely, Win7 and Ubuntu) 3. Choose which OS I want and hit enter. bingo. The problem is that I don't see that menu (step 2 above). Instead, windows automatically starts, even when I hit F12 to see the boot options, none of which I understand. Your help would be great! • Graphics problems: noise-like glitch, and screen freezes in Ubuntu 13.04

  I have recently upgraded to 13.04 and am using unity. I am experiencing two intermittent problems with the graphics: 1) All or part of the screen is taken up by 'noise', which lasts for about a second, see screenshot: 2) The launcher panel freezes. I can still move the mouse and the keyboard responds to function keys (I can dim the screen), but I cannot select anything. At the moment I recover by ctr-alt-f1, and restarting lightdm. My computer is a Samsung Chronos 7 laptop, model NP700Z5C, with Intel HD 4000 graphics The same problems occur with lightdm and gdm. I have attempted to install the intel drivers (as the screenshot hints) but these are not indicated as additional drivers in software & updates so I'm not sure whether they are in use. Any suggestions?

• ctrl + a doesn't work in browsers

  The combination for select all (ctrl+a) doesn't work in a browser (either if we speak about firefox or chromium). It doesn't work if I try to clik in to the adress bar nor if I try to use it to select what I've written in google search bar at google.com. When I press ctrl + a it simply takes the cursor before the first letter. This doesn't happen when I use a text editor software like Libre Office. There the shortcut does what's supposed to do, selecting all the text. What could be the problem?

• Is there a way to play music from a server through the network and have two computers as speakers?

  Hi, I have a server (Ubuntu 8.04 server) that I want to use as a music player. I want my laptop Ubuntu 10.04 to be one speaker and my mac pro (mac os x 10.6) to be the other. Okay software is found and setup is done, (thanks for the pictures @JorgeCastro.) all of the softwares in both computers and server is setup how should I continue? http://www.pulseaudio.org/wiki/FirstSteps well if the sound is bad, is there a solution like compressing the sound files before sending them to the speaker? then you could improve sound quality and lower the data stream.

• Size mismatch error while downloading packages [closed]

  I've been having this annoying problem lately since I upgraded from Linux Mint 9 to Ubuntu 12.04. It started when I was installing VLC from the Ubuntu Software Centre a few weeks ago. I kept getting this error with packages with "Size mismatch". This happened with many other programs later on. I just got around it by downloading the packages separately and installing them that way. Now I get two updates for packages I installed in that manner. I tried changing from where I download the packages, it didn't change anything. If anyone can help me with my issue it would be splendid.   I have a Voip Softphone software that I would like to start using on my Ubuntu 14.04 box. Here's the thing. My system sound right now goes through my HDMI to my speaker system so I can play music all day ;-) I have a bluetooth headset connected to the machine as well. What I am wondering is if there is a way to: Auto-mute the music when a call comes in Auto-switch the sound devices when a call comes in, from my hdmi sound device, to my headset Auto-switch back when the call ends, and auto-un-mute the music Or even just an auto-switch to the headset? I can always pause the music ;)

• Why do exclusively outsourcing projects as a company?

  A prospective employer told me they took a company level decision to only do outsourcing projects. I do not understand why did they take such a decision and the guy I talked to did not elaborate. He further said only that "their intention is to build software components". Since they are growing quite fast and reached around 300 employees, shouldn't they be at least open to the possibility of having a project of their own, maybe? All other companies I've had contact with were at least open to have one in the future.. I talked to a few of their employees and some are working in parallel on more than 2 outsourced projects (dividing time something like 4 + 4 hours / day). It seemed like a lot of projects with a period of a few months, maybe half an year come and go... Why would a company choose to provide only outsourcing services like that? How does it work to keep hundreds of people on outsourced projects with a seemingly high project turnover rate?

Literally just taking the credit card info and passing it to the gateway and processor.   I am planning to create an e-commerce website for users to buy products and services. In this website I want users to register and also participate in something like a browser game, where every user may receive some questions which they have to answer. For each question they successfully answered, they receive points and the number of collected points will decide on which rank they are. Edit 2 Currently I am considering using only HTML, CSS, JavaScript, PHP, SQL to design this e-commerce website. Together with this I was thinking about learning jQuery as it may help me, but I am not sure if I should code everything specifically by myself or just use the library to make it faster. 1) Could you tell me if those languages are sufficient enough for creating such a website described? 2) Could you tell me what kind of free software tools and frameworks are most appropriate to use when creating this e-commerce website?

• Cant find one particular wireless network. Worked before, but sudenly stopt working.

  My first question here. My problem is: I cant find my wireless network at home. Situation: It worked fine 7 days ago. It works with a cable(wierd). I find the network on my ipad/phone. I can connect to wireless hotspot network form my phone and wireless at my university, and it works fine. I can connect to the network in windows What I have tried: Tried this Strange network issue; works on windows, but not on ubuntu, works on campus wireless, but not at home (removing resolve.conf). Hardware and software: I have a Broadcom card Use dual boot ubuntu 12.04 - windows 7 Things I did to make wireless work: blacklist brcmsmac blacklist bcma blacklist b43 blacklist ssb Can anyone help me? • Great job offer..but I have uneasy feeling [closed]

  I just got an offer for a great opportunity, location, salary...but something seams odd. During my interview, for the position of software engineer, it was very relaxed and casual. Which was very nice. But I got the odd sense that I already had the job and that this was just a "getting to know you" conversation. Then, when they never did any code testing or assignment to demonstrate my skills I thought that really odd. It's like I got hired straight from my resume. I'm uncomfortable with this because I'd rather know now, that I don't meet their needs, rather than after 3 months. (Which is when benefits kick in and they say they'll convert me from temp. employee) This sounds like temp-to-hire or contract-to-hire.

• What's the most productive coding environment

  I was speaking with an ex-colleague the other day about the most productive way to write code and he said he found it best "to CIMP, or Code In My Pants". When I asked him exactly what he meant, he explained he found it best to work at home, coding at his own pace, dressed comfortably (in his pants), and communicating with his team through emails, IM, or the telephone. Digesting his approach (which he describes to clients as the Complete Integrated Method of Programming), I realised my coding is also more productive when working in an isolated environment, which made me wonder if the software industry has got it all wrong and should development be really done by dispersed teams of individuals, or are there advantages to geographical herding that make up for the added interruptions it brings? So has business got it wrong? Should development occur predominantly across geographically isolated individuals to increase productivity, or are there real reasons why herding developers together makes sense?

I have a bit of a passion for average end-users suggesting the kinds of software they want and they way they think their applications and computers could work. • Counting product releases if you work on the backend/online services?

  I am trying to update my resume, and I would like to count the number of "product releases" that I was directly involved in with a company. It would seem to serve as a performance metric. The problem is that I was working on the backend of a very large distributed system, like along the lines of Hadoop or other huge database. We had regular 6-month major releases and other minor releases. My manager kept saying that "shipped" these releases, but "shipping" a product to me sounds like releasing single pieces of software, like Microsoft would ship Office 11 or something. Any ideas on "product releases" for backend service engineers, or any other type of performance metric?

• My webcam stopped working, how do I fix it?

  I'm using Ubuntu 10.10 on a new Compaq Presario CQ56. The webcam was working fine for the first two days, in both Skype and Cheese, but simply turned black with thin vertical lines in the middle of a Skype call and now refuses to work in any program, including gstreamer-properties, Cheese, and VLC. It gives a black screen when rebooted into a live CD and tested. When tested, it either shows a plain black screen or black with thin vertical lines. Attached is an image of the video shown (it is static, there is no noise or static, and no response to variance in light). Also, when I play music or sounds, it makes a garbled noise related to the sound being played, which may or may not be connected to the webcam issue. If anyone has any ideas on what caused this, or whether it's a hardware or software issue, or how to fix it, I would appreciate them very much, Thanks

• In a team practicing Domain Driven Design, should the whole team participate in Stakeholder meetings?

  In my experience, a Software Development Team that comprises: 1 Project Manager 1 Tech Lead 1 - 2 Senior Dev 2 - 3 Junior Dev (Fresh grad) Only the Tech Lead & PM (and/or Senor Dev/s) will participate in a meeting with Clients, Domain Experts, Client's technical resource. I can think of the ff potential pitfalls: Important info gets lost Human error (TL/PM might forgot to disseminate info due to pressure or plain human error) Non-verbal info (maybe a presentation using a diagram presented by Domain Expert) Maintaining Ubiquitous language is harder to build since not all team members get to hear the non-dev persons Potential of creative minds are not fully realized (Personally, I am more motivated to think/explore when I am involved with these important meetings) Advantages of this approach: Only one point of contact Less time spent on meetings? Honestly, I am biased & against this approach. I would like to hear your opinions. Is this how you do it in your team? Thanks in advance!

• Handling (many) multiple projects in Git in an enterprise environment

  One of the advantages of older version control systems such as CVS and SVN in enterprise development is that anyone can connect to source control and see all the projects that the company has. This can make it easier to get a high level view of what kid of development is happening outside your sprint and also keeps everything in one place and easy to find. However, distributed version control systems (Git, specifically) use the repository as their base unit. They work best with one project (or several closely related projects) per repository. This makes repository management more difficult in most enterprise environments where it is not unusual to have more than 25-50 projects to support. As far as I have been able to determine, you have to keep a list somewhere else of all the repos you have. There is software available, like GitHub, that help, but that still is an extra step beyond a single connection string and listing the contents of the repository. What is the best way to deal with the complexity of multiple repositories?
