  What are the shortest licenses with aims for programmers/code. I have found only MIT that is page-long. What are other licenses that have approximately the same length or even shorter? Edit: Ok, length is not only criteria(I haven't expected one-line licenses, I have understaminate you people). I need easy to read and short licenses. It is meant for people who want to use my code not for lawyers who want to read long licenses. I am creating small codes to use by most people probably free of charge. I don't want useless information to be required, for example: what is X(for example: what is software, source code etc.) very specific information(for example: you can use it shop, opera, school... free of charge; but instead "use it everywhere but don't take money" Depending on type of code I would like to allow/disallow commercial usage.

• Suggestion for a Non-CSE developer

  Due to financial problems, I couldn't go for CSE in my country and had to settle for a BCIS honors degree. Now, after quite some time, when I want to go for a higher position in software development then I get asked about algorithms and basics that I have missed back in uni. This is affecting my chances of getting selected and I cannot afford that any longer. My question would be that what you would suggest smn like me to do in order to cover the 'basics' without any university or educational institute e.g. books,learn C++,etc? Any suggestion (including -ve) is welcomed and appreciated.

• Problems booting Ubuntu 10.10 with Nvdia GeForce 6600gt

  I am quite new to Ubuntu and I already stumbled upon a problem. I run Ubuntu 10.10 Maverick Meerkat now and Install went fine, when trying to boot the screen popped black and I faced this message "gpu lockup - switching to software fbcon." When setting the display to onboard VGA through BIOS Ubuntu has no problem at all, but when I switch back to my AGP card (which is a Nvidia GeForce 6600GT) I get that message again. I do not use VGA for that card I use my DVI cable for it. Does anyone have an answer for me to make this work? Thank you

  I installed Ubuntu 14.04 on my computer : i3/4G/750G/VGA Intel HD3000 & 1GB NVidia with CUDA GT540M. I've some problems with Ubuntu 14.04 : Does Ubuntu 14.04 support Emerald Theme Manager? Emerald Theme Manager is not available in Ubuntu Software Center? I installed Compiz and Compiz Setting Manager, it works ok, but the Windows 3D plugin is not work? The Shutdown/Restart function on Right-Top Panel is not work, is there any solution for this problem? The mouse theme I installed only work in current session, next time i restart computer it change back to default mouse theme? How can i resize the spacing between Desktop Icon? Waiting for everyone respond. Thankyou so much. P/s : My English is not good, expect you understand. :)

• Managing a remote ubuntu server

  I hire an Ubuntu server which I access remotely and I purchased a domain for my webpage. I am totally new to this server thing and to Ubuntu as well. What applications should I install on the server? I need to transfer files to the server, I guess I would use FileZilla the same way I use it to upload files to my free website. But to have a username and password should I install an ftp server and create a user on Ubuntu? My website will send automated messages to users, so do I need to install a mail server as well? What other software should I install on the server apart from a firewall and an anti-virus? Should I partition the hard drive (3TB) and how? How partitions should I create and in what size for what applications? Btw I use Windows 7 on my computer, so I am basically a windows user.

• See how one goal leads to another (i.e., how often downloading the demo leads to purchasing)

  I have two goals set up for my site in Google Analytics: one to download the demo of my software, and the other to buy the full version. I'm having trouble getting statistics on how often the download leads to a purchase. This seems like something the multi-channel funnel is perfect for (as in this question)---I expect that it takes multiple visits for the demo download to convert into an order. However, I can't seem to narrow down the multi-channel funnel data into only those that have one goal followed by another. If it matters, I'm tracking the ordering action as a page view (i.e., someone views the "Thanks for ordering" page) and the demo download as an action (which fires when someone clicks the "download" button). • What is the most secure environment for multiple CMS sites? [closed]

  I wish to run about 50 Joomla or WordPress low-traffic websites on 1 server, or part of a server. Each website will be managed by its own, naive owner who will have be able to access the Joomla or Wordpress backend of the website. I am concerned about security and isolation as my users will periodically get into trouble by not protecting their sites properly. Two alternatives I know of exist: Run one Linux system with multiple websites under Apache. Follow current Joomla and WordPress security tips. Increase the isolation of the individual sites by using mpm-itk, which will allow each website to run as its own user. The alternative to this is to run virtualization software such as the Xen hypervisor. Each site would have its own, virtual Linux system. I lack the experience needed to make this decision and I am asking which path to take. Obviously, there may be other alternatives that I haven't considered.

• Workflow of sharing code for small teams

  Problem is, we have developed a small CMS, that is different per implementation (currently). Of course development of this is never complete. Sometimes, we are working on more than one project that implements it (by copying-pasting the code files of the CMS to each project), and we add a new feature that we want to share on other projects as well (these can be small ones too, ie a custom ajax JSON controller - we use MVC) What we want to do is quickly and uniformly share the code with all other projects, via a version control system (or something similar), and generally organize the workflow as we know this isn't a very good workflow that we have. What would you suggest? Also, at the momment, the software we use is Visual Studio 2010, so we are strongly considering TFS, but even if we get it we still don't know the ideal workflow, or even if TFS supports what we want to do. Edit: Also note, we have specific implementations that have modifications over the CMS base that we want to KEEP only in the project area. (ie: a specific feature that we DONT want to share with the base CMS code)

• How do i allow non-root access to /ttyUSB0 on 12.04?

  Since i updated from 10.04 to 12.04, i am unable to acces the device connected in /ttyUSB0 if i dont have root access. To be more specific, i use a usb-to-serial com port converter to acces and configure Cisco equipment with a software called Putty. It happens that, since i upgraded to 12.04, Putty only sees the connected device when i run it as "gksudo putty". If not, it says "unable to connect to port /ttyUSB0". I have managed to change the permissions via chmod 666, and it works, but if i disconnect the usb and reconnect, it goes back to root only. How do i permanently allow non-root access? I have a clue it might be via udev rules, but i have NO IDEIA how to do it. obs. Manufacturer and drivers "PROLIFIC"

• "Sorry, Ubuntu 12.04 has experienced an internal error."

  I have recently upgraded to Precise and had some errors. It seems to be quite random and with differences in the error reports. I have duly sent the reports hoping the system will have found the problem and sorted itself out. After the second error I am following the wizards (software...) advice and seeking help. The 1st time it happened I jotted down the following: ExecutablePath /usr/lib/tracker/tracker-extract LaunchPad bug 950765 AMD64 The second time the following: ExecutablePath /usr/share/appart/appart-gpu-error-intel.py "Possible GPU hang........" sandybridge-m-gt2 LaunchPad bug 981261 If there is anyone that can help it is much appreciated. I did not really want to upgrade at this stage, but was forced to due to the latest version of python-numpy in precise. You win some, you loose some.... • Ubuntu is not showing in LightDM menu list

  I am using using ubuntu 11.10. Everything was working perfectly this morning. At a moment "Ubuntu software center" application was unable to get started. So I restarted by system and when I logged in it started under GNOME. Again when I try to start in ubuntu session then it was not showing in menu list but Ubuntu 2D is coming. I don't come to know why this is happening. please let me know any fix for this issue. Thanks!

• What could a kernel mode driver be possibly useful to?

  This might sound weird but there's an explanation for my question: I want to write something to impress a potential recruiter, and I want (to strenghten my skills) to create a program which should communicate with kernel mode driver(s). I'm not starting from a goal and trying to design the system to achieve it, I'm doing the opposite: designing the system and trying to justify it with a meaningful goal. So here comes the question: what could a kernel mode driver be possibly useful to? The answers that come to my mind right now are: I might want to communicate with hardware (not really my case, it's a software project mainly) I might want to mess around with the OS (security/hooking?) ?? I need some other examples like those

  Hey guys, I'm rewriting my game now using software designing patterns and want to do the code, most correct I can. While implementing MVC(Model View Controller) I got a question which I would like to discuss or to hear some opinions of experts. The question is about management of unused frames... For example next sequence of windows: ResourceLoadingWindow - LoginWindow - GameWindow Definetly that I don't want to reuse ResourceLoadingWindow , since I'm using Java Applet and I don't see any situation when I will need to reuse it. The different story is about LoginWindow, which can be reused a lot of times, because some player would want to Logout and come back again in few minutes for example. I would like to know, following the MVC structure, should I destroy window, removing it from ContentPane or just hide? Maybe I need to unregister it from controller or I shouldn't do so? • Nvidia x server setting no specific option

  I just freshly installed Ubuntu 14.04 and did only 4 things: 1) $ sudo add-apt-repository ppa:xorg-edgers/ppa $ sudo apt-get update $ sudo apt-get install nvidia-340 2) sudo apt-get install nvidia-current-updates nvidia-settings-updates 3) Went to Software & Updates/Additional drivers and chosen Using NVIDIA binary driver - version 340.32 from nvidia-340 (open source) I had to do part 3 because after part 1 I had driver version 304 Now to the main part. I cant set up custom resolution. When I had Ubuntu 12.04 year ago there was option in Nvidia x server setting called "Add custom resolution" or something like that and it was alright. Now this option is gone. How can I change/add custom resolution?

• Can it be a good idea to create a new table for each client of a webapp?

  This is semi-hypothetical, and as I've no experience in dealing with massive database tables, I have no idea if this is horrible for some reason. On to the situation: Imagine a web based application - lets say accounting software - which has 20,000 clients and each client has 1000+ entries in a table. That's 20 million rows which I know can certainly slow down complex queries. In a case like this, does it make more sense to create a new table in the database for each client? How do databases react to having 20k (or more!) tables?

• Scrum in a consulting environment?

  Is it possible to introduce scrum to a consulting environment? On any given week I might belong to 4 different teams, each with a different PM, BA and dev team (I am a designer). It doesn't seem feasible, time wise, to be able to be part of that many teams/projects as there would need to be daily stand-ups for each, sprint reviews, etc. I should add these projects are not necessarily software, but mainly ecommerce web projects. • Is it possible to boot Ubuntu using the Windows bootloader?

  As noted by many people, Windows 8's UEFI requirements might will won't get in the way of installing Linux (or whatever), as the replacement bootloader will also need to be signed somehow. Some systems All systems will let you disable the signature requirement, but the feature might be hidden to disable or you might not be willing to give up on the benefits of a secure bootloader. • android game: how to approach mutliplayer

  I'm making a single player game that is near completion, and I am already starting to think about giving the game multiplayer. The multiplayer would basically be finding someone to play against, likely in a waiting room or just have a match-making function, and then having a pokemon style battle between the people in real time. I think it would be relatively simple as I'm just sending information about each attack(move chosen and damage) and what it did back and forth, but I'm not sure what resources to consult for this. I am very new to Android/Java development and really just learning as I go. I have heard a bit about Skiller, but I'm still unfamiliar with using other SDK's and how easy it may be. Does anyone have any suggestions as to what SDK's or methods for accomplishing this. I currently have no money to spend on software development, but I'd like to get started on learning how to do this.

• Facing quality issues

  A workforce management software has complex GUI (for example values in a page depends on the status (closed or open) of other pages). Only latest and near past development has test coverage. During our last release, we received lots of bugs from customer in-spite of 2 weeks of testing Sprint . We don't have dedicated test team. The developers does the unit test & User acceptance test. Every day triggers automated regression test. I am afraid the developers are not testing the entire workflow because its time consuming also not able to automate it because of its complexity. Any suggestions ?. The legacy code (15 yrs development) has less code coverage. How can I improve quality ? Note: Now not possible to hire testers to have independent test team!!

• Do I own copyright of program I made in own time?

  I created a software package that aids electrical engineers with common calculations used on site (substations to be specific). I created the package in my own time, without being asked and without guidance. The package is now widely used within my company and I intend to distribute it nationally. Do I own the copyright? My contract does state that all work produced is theirs, but this was outside of work and outside of my 'scope of work'. My company is mainly a civil and construction company and had no influence in the creation of the program. From comments: This is the paragraph "During the course of your service, you will disclose to the company all information, formulae, processes, inventions or improvements which you have learned, discovered or evolved during the course of your service or in connection with the business of the company and will sign any necessary documents to enable the company to obtain patent protection whether still in the company service or not. " They are taking it seriously and have got their lawyers.
