    I want to check if a word is in a list of words. word = "with" word_list = ["without", "bla", "foo", "bar"] I tried if word in set(list), but it is not yielding the wanted result due to the fact in is matching string rather than item. That is to say, "with" is a match in any of the words in the word_list but still if "with" in set(list) will say True. What is a simpler way for doing this check than manually iterate over the list?

    I have this data: Game 1: 7.0/10.0, Reviewed: 1000 times Game 2: 7.5/10.0, Reviewed: 3000 times Game 3: 8.9/10.0, Reviewed: 140,000 times Game 4: 10.0/10.0 Reviewed: 5 times . . . I want to manipulate this data in a way to make each rating reflective of how many times it has been reviewed. For example Game 3 should have a little heavier weight than than Game 4, since it has been reviewed way more. And Game 2's 7 should be weighted more than Game 1's 7. Is there a proper function to do this scaling? In such a way that ScaledGameRating = OldGameRating * (some exponential function?)

  • Is it me or is pygame.key.get_pressed() not working?

    okay, so I am making a basic space-ship game. I can't get rotation to work because it scrambles the bitmap, but that's for another question.Should I even use a gif? any other filetype suggestions? back to the actual point here, so: k = pygame.key.get_pressed() yeah, self explanatory. this doesn't work, as it returns each key as pressed. so, somewhere else: d = k[pygame.K_d] and another line: print d and another: if d: So, k returns as each key on the keyboard pressed. d returns 0 indefinitely, whether or not d is pressed. d is always 0. the statement about d therefore is never true. Why is this happening?

    I have a list of lists sorted by the second value of the list (the groups). I now need to iterate through this to work on each "group" at a time. the data is [name, group, data1, data2, data3, data4].   • How do you know where macports installs python packages to?

    I am running macports to install scipy and such on OS X leopard with python 2.7. The install runs successfully, but running python and trying to import the packages I've installed, they're not found. What I'm running is: sudo python_select python27 sudo port install py27-wxpython py27-numpy py27-matplotlib sudo port install py27-scipy py27-ipython Opening up python in interactive mode (it is the correct version of python), I type 'import scipy' and get a module not found error. What gives? How can I find out where it is installing the packages to instead?

  • Why is Python 3.1.3 in the header listed as a syntax error?

    Hi, I'm a newbie programmer so I'll do my best to clearly ask my question. I'm running Python scripts in Mac 10.6.5 and now trying to write and save to a text file (following instructions in HeadsUp Python book). Whenever I hit function+F5 (as instructed) I get the same "invalid syntax" error and Idle highlights the "1" in "Python 3.1.3" of the header. Here's the header to which I'm referring: Python 3.1.3 (r313:86882M, Nov 30 2010, 09:55:56) [GCC 4.0.1 (Apple Inc. build 5494)] on darwin Type "copyright", "credits" or "license()" for more information. Extremely frustrating. I've checked and rechecked the code but this doesn't seem to be code related because the "syntax error" is in regards to the header text that posts in every Idle/Python session. Help anyone?     Something doesn't seem right about the source code for Flash Remoting's Date(AS3) <- DateTime(.NET) stream reader/writer methods, when it comes to handling UTC <- Local times.     I'm trying to select and de-select dates on a C# Web Calendar control. The problem I have is that I can select or deselect dates except when there is only a single date selected. Clicking on it does not trigger the selection changed event, so Ineed to do something on the dayrender event but I'm not sure what or how. Edit: Added the Pre_Render event code. Question is using C# 3.0 feature like Linq, Lambda etc. can I rewrite the program. Why? Because I am learning linq and lambda and want to implement the same.     I have a Game in which there is a timer involved. For each two minutes that passes a new round between different players begins. So, I have a text box starting from 00:00 and changes each second until it is equal to 02:00. Now, I want to save the state of the game in the middle of a round if the user closes the form. What I need to do is that upon loading, the textbox starts at the time that the user left the game the last time and continue up till 02:00 normally. How can I do this? The Lucene Query is using a index named "ExpenseTransactions" for getting the result set. In RavenDB, Indexes are LINQ queries stored in the RavenDB server and would be  executed on the background and will perform query against the JSON documents. Indexes will be working with a lucene query expression or a set operation. Indexes are composed using a Map and Reduce function. Check out Ayende's blog post on Map/Reduce We can create index using RavenDB web admin tool as well as programmitically using its Client API. The below shows the screen shot of creating index using web admin tool. We can also create Indexes using Raven Cleint API as shown in the following code documentStore.DatabaseCommands.PutIndex("ExpenseTransactions",     new IndexDefinition<Expense,Expense>() {     Map = Expenses => from exp in Expenses                     select new { exp.Date } });  In the Map function, we used a Linq expression as shown in the following from exp in docs.Expensesselect new { exp.Date };We have not used a Reduce function for the above index. A Reduce function is useful while performing aggregate functions based on the results from the Map function. Indexes can be use with set operations of RavenDB.SET OperationsUnlike other document databases, RavenDB supports set based operations that lets you to perform updates, deletes and inserts to the bulk_docs endpoint of RavenDB. For doing this, you just pass a query to a Index as shown in the following commandDELETE http://localhost:8080/bulk_docs/ExpenseTransactions?query=Date:20100531The above command using the Index named "ExpenseTransactions" for querying the documents with Date filter and  will delete all the documents that match the query criteria.   • Is there any reason to use C++ instead of C, Perl, Python, etc.?

    As a Linux (server side) developer, I don't know where and why should I use C++. When I'm going to performance, the first and last choice is C. When "performance" isn't the main issue, programming languages like Perl and Python would be good choices. Almost all of open source applications I know in this area has been written in C, Perl and Python, Bash script, AWK and even PHP, but no one goes to use C++. I'm not discussing about some other areas like GUI or web application, I'm just talking about Linux and about CLI and daemons. Is there any satisfiable reason to use C++?
