  • CSS to Make 2 Column Content Areas

    I'm trying to stray away from using tables to form the layout of my content, and I can think of two alternatives that I'd like to better learn: (1) styling list items to be side-by-side, and (2) using div blocks that float onto the same line. Both of these would have their own uses for what I'm working on. I'm already using div tags to form the entire layout of my three-column template, but what I need to do now is a bit different. In case it helps, my project can be found here. In short, here's my question; how would I style a div so that the width of it is 50% of the width of the area it occupies, rather than 50% of the width of the page? As for my other question, what would be the best approach to styling list items so that they are side-by-side? I'm working on a registration script now, and instead of using a table with "Username" on the left and the input text on the right, I can use two list items. It's late and I've been working on this project of mine for about 8 hours straight now, so I apologize if I'm asking anything confusing. Feel free to ask me any questions about what I'm trying to do.     I have a scenario where I need to show a different page to a user for the same url based on a probability distribution, so for e.g. for 3 pages the distribution might be page 1 - 30% of all users page 2 - 50% of all users page 3 - 20% of all users When deciding what page to load for a given user, what technique can I use to ensure that the overall distribution matches the above? I am thinking I need a way to choose an object at "random" from a set X { x1, x2....xn } except that instead of all objects being equally likely the probability of an object being selected is defined beforehand.

    I have a static collection of objects that will be frequently updated from multiple threads. Is it possible to lock individual objects in a collection instead of locking the entire collection so that only threads trying to access the same object in the collection would get blocked instead of every thread? If there is a better way to update objects in a collection from multiple threads, I'm all ears.

The user can decide if they would like the results ordered asc or desc.     Please see the warning below taken from the StreamWriter class specification (http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/system.io.streamwriter.aspx): "Any public static (Shared in Visual Basic) members of this type are thread safe. Any instance members are not guaranteed to be thread safe." I understand that a W3WC process contains two thread pools i.e. worker threads and I/O threads. A worker thread could contain many threads of its own (if the application creates its own System.Thread instances). Does the warning only relate to System.Threads or does it relate to worker threads and I/O threads as well I.e. as the instance variables of the streamwriter class are not thread safe then does this mean that there would be problems if multiple worker threads access it eg if two users on two different web clients attempt to write to the log file at the same time, then could one lock out the other?

    I have an HttpModule that looks at the query string for a parameter called "cmd" and executes one of a small set of predefined commands that display server stats in XML. For example, http://server01?cmd=globalstats. Now, on rare occasions, like once out of hundreds of times, I will get corrupt output like this: <!-- the stats start displaying fine... --> <stats> <ServerName>SERVER01</ServerName> <StackName>Search</StackName> <TotalRequests>945</TotalRequests> <!-- ...until something has gone awry and now we're getting the markup of the home page! --> <!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC "-//W3C//DTD XHTML 1.0 Transitional//EN" "http://www.w3.org/TR/xhtml1/DTD/xhtml1-transitional.dtd"> <html xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1999/xhtml"> <head> ...the rest of the home page markup...   • Mouse Events lost on zoom in silverlight

    Hi All, I'm running into an issue where I seem to be losing mouse events. Essentially I have a grid with a bunch of controls that get refreshed (removed/re-added via Grid.Children.Clear and Grid.Children.Add(control) ) via a WCF_Service. If I zoom in to a part of the grid where no control exists, I'm unable to zoom out. I have implemented zoom to mouse position but have logic to ensure the coordinates of the grid are never beyond the window of screen. (Eg: Grid.ActualWidth must be 0 and Translate.X must be < Grid.ActualWidth - 200) I have also experienced this where I can still see a section of one of the controls, but it still is not able to zoom out (unless I'm over the control). Appreciate any and all help.

    I use SPs and this isn't an SP vs code-behind "Build your SQL command" question. I'm looking for a high-throughput method for a backend app that handles many small transactions. I use SQLDataReader for most of the returns since forward only works in most cases for me. I've seen it done many ways, and used most of them myself. Methods that define and accept the stored procedure parameters as parameters themselves and build using cmd.Parameters.Add (with or without specifying the DB value type and/or length) Assembling your SP params and their values into an array or hashtable, then passing to a more abstract method that parses the collection and then runs cmd.Parameters.Add Classes that represent tables, initializing the class upon need, setting the public properties that represent the table fields, and calling methods like Save, Load, etc I'm sure there are others I've seen but can't think of at the moment as well. I'm open to all suggestions.

    I'm replacing a website that was previously HTML only. I put a GridView on the French and the English page and I'm getting 2 fields: A date and a currency. For the date, I need to transform it into a long date format. The English part isn't very hard, but when I get to the French page, I can't transform it into a long date format with French words (i.e.:Mardi instead of Tuesday). Is there any way to format the string with French date words instead?
