• Could Ajax + Caching be seen as cloaking?

  I have a website where we use a technique to speed up loading times based in a combination of AJAX + caching. Basically, when we have a section in a page with content which is slow to retrieve, we first look if it's cached. If it is, then we serve the content, if it's not, we serve a placeholder and then make an AJAX call in the client to retrieve the content, wich is now cached for subsequent requests. As a consecuence, sometimes you get the entire page content in the first request, and sometimes you get those placeholders, wich get filled inmediatly with the responses of the AJAX request.   I have a thin client with 112mb RAM which boots ubuntu server 12.04.1 from a usb drive with openbox and it is to be used by students to communicate with cisco equipment. And because of this the students need to be able to reconfigure the network interface and then restart it without a reboot using the only user - cisco. This is what I have so far: adduser cisco usermod -a -G dialout cisco chown root:cisco /etc/network/interfaces chmod 664 /etc/network/interfaces chmod u+s /sbin/shutdown chmod u+s /sbin/reboot chmod u+s /sbin/poweroff chmod u+s /run/network/if* chmod u+s /sbin/ifdown chmod u+s /sbin/ifup And when I run /etc/init.d/networking restart as cisco I get: *Reconfiguring network interfaces... rm: cannot remove `eth0.dhclient': Permission denied Failed to send flush request: Operation not permitted RTNETLINK answers: Operation not permitted Any ideas on how to get this working?   I am planning on writing a small browser game. The webserver is a shared server, with no root / install possible. I want to use AJAX for client/server communication. There will be 12 players. So each player would be polling the server for the current game status every X milliseconds (let's say 200ms). So that would be 200ms x 12 players x 5 = 60 requests per second Can Apache handle those requests? What might be the bottlenecks when using this attempt?

  As part of my job as a web developer, I spend an amount of time doing UI prototypes to show the client. It's a pain in the behind but sometimes it has to be done. I've seen Shuttleworth (and the design team) pump out images like this: That's made by something called Balsamiq Mockups... Something that balances on top of Adobe Air (yack!) and costs $79. I've tried it but it kept falling over. I think it had something to do with Air not the app itself. My point is if I'm paying out for something, I want it to be native.

  Why ISO/ANSI didn't standardize C++ at the binary level? There are many portability issues with C++, which is only because of lack of it's standardization at the binary level. Don Box writes, (quoting from his book Essential COM, chapter COM As A Better C++) C++ and Portability Once the decision is made to distribute a C++ class as a DLL, one is faced with one of the fundamental weaknesses of C++, that is, lack of standardization at the binary level. Although the ISO/ANSI C++ Draft Working Paper attempts to codify which programs will compile and what the semantic effects of running them will be, it makes no attempt to standardize the binary runtime model of C++. The first time this problem will become evident is when a client tries to link against the FastString DLL's import library from a C++ developement environment other than the one used to build the FastString DLL. • Black screen appears when booting new install of Ubuntu 11.10 on my desktop, cannot access Grub menu to fix

  I installed 11.10 on my desktop PC but get a black screen after the BIOS screen when I try to boot it. I was able to run 10.04.04 on my hard drive before installing 11.10 and I am also able to use 11.10 on my usb pendrive and CD ROM. I've tried unplugging all USB devices before booting and also upgrading from 11.10 to 11.10. Holding the shift key from the BIOS screen doesn't allow me to access the GRUB menu to try: Highlight the first entry, press “e” to edit it. Navigate to words “quiet splash”, delete them and type “nomodeset” in their place (without quotes). Press Ctrl + X to continue boot. Once on the desktop, go to System Administration Additional Drivers and activate the recommended drivers. So running 11.10 on my pendrive, I tried editing /etc/default/grub, commenting out the GRUB_HIDDEN_TIMEOUT setting by putting a '#' in front of it to display the grub menu and setting GRUB_TIMEOUT setting to a value greater than or equal to 1 e.g. GRUB_TIMEOUT=10. However, when I run sudo update-grub, I get: /usr/sbin/grub-probe: error: cannot find a device for / (is /dev mounted?) I get the same error with update-grub after: sudo mount /dev/sda1 /mnt and after: sudo grub-install --root-directory=/mnt /dev/sda reboot sudo update-grub Other suggestions to fix the update-grub problem: Open synaptic, then purge all the related grub installed packages and reinstall grub-pc then and finally: sudo update-grub Or use Grub Customizer http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1195275 What would be the best way to approach this? I'm concerned about purging "all the related grub installed packages" but if it's true some files are corrupted this would seem necessary. Also, was I executing the correct commands i.e. with mount and grub-install, before running grub-update?

• Virtualbox: host only networking - proxy internet connection

  I'll ask my question first, then give details about where I am coming from: Is it possible to use host only, then have ubuntu act as a proxy to provide internet access to windows? If so, how? I am trying to get the right combination of networking for my virtualbox windows client VM (win7). My host is ubuntu 10.10 (maverick). I believe I understand the basic network options (please correct me if I am incorrect): NAT - Host can't communicate with guest but guest has access to all host's adapters Host only - Separate adapter but guest has no net access Bridged - bridge an adapter in the host with the virtual adapter to give the host access to the host adapter I am trying to give my win guest internet access, but also access the host in a separate network. Bridged only works when the host is connected to the internet (this is a laptop) so when it's not connected the network is down. Thanks I appreciate your help.

• Universal navigation menu across domains - would it be considered duplicate content?

  Across different sites on different second-level domains exists a universal navigation bar with a collection of roughly 30 links. This universal bar is exactly the same for every page on each domain. The bar's HTML, CSS and JavaScript are all stored in a subfolder for each domain and the HTML is embedded upon serving the page and is not being injected on the client side. None of the links use any rel directives and are as vanilla as can be. My question is about Google's duplicate content rule. Would something like this be considered duplicate content? Matt Cutt's blog post about duplicate content mentions boilerplate repetition, but then he mentions lengthy legalese. Since the text in this universal bar is brief and uses common terms, I wonder if this same rule applies. If this is considered duplicate content, what would be a good way to correct the problem?

  Hi, I setup ghettoVCB script in order to backup 3 VM. I put it in a crontab but I have an issue. In my backup folder I have 3 different folder, one for each VM. It seems that a backup didn't finished the process. • Windows file locks allowing multiple users to write to open file over network

  I have 6 windows computers (xp,vista,7) that need to access a samba share (Ubuntu 12.04). I am trying to make it so only one client can open a file at a given time. I thought this was pretty standard behavior of file locks, but I can't get it to work. The way it is right now a file can be open by two users, and changed and saved by either one of them. The last file saved overwrites what ever changes the other user made. At first I thought this was a Samba configuration problem, but I get this behavior even between two windows machines. So far I have only tested: Windows Xp Windows Vista Windows XP Samba << Windows Vista and both give the same behavior. When I tested the Samba configuration, I had set strict locking = yes and get errors logged like this: close_remove_share_mode: Could not get share mode lock for file _prod/part_number_list_COPY.xlsx Eventually all of the files are going to be moved onto the Samba share, so that is the configuration I am most concerned about fixing. Any ideas? Thanks in advance. EDIT: I tested an excel file again, and it is now working properly in both above mentioned cases, I am also no longer getting the above mentioned error. I don't know what happened, perhaps a restart fixed it? (also works with strict locking = no) Although I still need to find a solution for the CAD/CAM files we use, the software is Vector and it does not seem to be using file locks. Is there any software that I can use to manage these files, so two people can't open/edit them at a time? Maybe a windows application that forces file locks? Or a dirt simple version control system? (the only ones I have seen at are too complicated for our needs).

• Red Hat 5.3 on HP Proliant DL380 G5 and failed drive on RAID controller

  I have a development ERP server here in my office that I assist with support on, and originally the DBA requested a single drive setup for some of the drives on the server. Thus the hardware RAID controller (an HP embedded controller) looks like: c0d0 (2 drive) RAID-1 c0d1 (2 drive) RAID-1 c0d2 (1 drive) No RAID <-- Failed c0d3 (1 drive) No RAID c0d4 (1 drive) No RAID c0d5 (1 drive) No RAID c0d2 has failed. I replaced the drive immediately with a spare using the hot-swap, but the c0d2 continues to mark itself as failed, even when I umount the partition. I'm loathe to reboot the server since I'm concerned about the server coming back up in rescue mode but I'm afraid that's the only way to get the system to re-read the drive. I assumed there was some sort of auto-detection routine for this, but I haven't been able to figure out the proper procedure. I have installed the HP ACU CLI utilties, so I can see the hardware RAID setup. I'd really like to find out what the proper procedure should have been, where I went wrong, and how to correct it now. Obviously this goes without saying I should NOT have listened to the DBA and set the drives up as RAID-1 throughout as was my first instinct. He wasn't worried about data loss, but it sure would have been easier to replace the failed drive. :)

  I'm writing a very basic turn based strategy game which allows a player to select units and attack enemy units on their turn. The game is written in Java using the slick2d library and I plan to use kyronet for the networking api. I want the game to be networked, but I do not know how I should go about it. My current idea is to connect two users together, and the first one to join the game becomes the game host, while the other becomes the client. However after reading http://gafferongames.com/networking-for-game-programmers/what-every-programmer-needs-to-know-about-game-networking/ it seems my game would be suited to a peer to peer lockstep model. Would that make programming the networking side much easier? Any suggestions on how I should structure my networking would be greatly appreciated

• Upgrading from SQL2000 database to SQL Express 2008 R2

  Hi, We have a web application which uses a MSSQL 2000 backend database. We are currently paying a ridiculous amount for Shared Hosting, with the database costs alone costing us $150 per month (MSSQL 100mb extra space is $40 per month). Our database size is 896.38 MB I am looking at getting a Virtual Private Server and upgrading the database to a MSSQL2008 Express database. I am aware that the Express version is limited to a 10GB database (with R2), and is constrained to a single CPU. I have also been offered SQL Server 2008 Web Edition for $19/per month, but I cannot find many details on the difference between Express and Web. Any suggestions here? What I would also like to know is: If we upgrade the database to MSSQL 2008 database, is there any issues with possible data transformations in the future? I.e. Is it possible to download and mount it with SQL Server 2008 Standard edition? I'm more concerned about how to get data in and out of the database through SQL Management tools. Are there any other issues that I might face? Thanks, Mike

  Implementing remember me with Stripe, while not using their Checkout (not supported on PhoneGap), seems to be fine using the path: First time: Request token on the client side using card info. Create customer on server side using token. Upon confirm, charge customer. Second time: Check if current user is Stripe customer by requesting the info from our server. If is Stripe customer, show "use credit card on file" instead of regular CC form. Upon confirm, charge customer. However, there is one important convenience items missing--last four digits of card number. Most sites inform you of the card you're using before making the payment, pretty important in case you have to switch out cards. I have seen that you can retrieve charges which would allow me to get the last four digits. Is it bad practice to pull that and display it? Are there alternative solutions anyone has in mind?

• Why does my Perl CGI script raise an internal server error on Apache?

  I've installed apache2 on Ubuntu 11.04, and localhost is working. I created a simple printenv.pl script and put it in the following directory $ mv printenv.pl /usr/lib/cgi-bin/ $ chmod +rx /usr/lib/cgi-bin/printenv.pl However when I go to http://127.0.0.1/cgi-bin/printenv.pl, I get a 500 Internal Server Error I checked the error log at /var/log/apache2, and this is what it says: [Mon Oct 24 11:04:25 2011] [error] (13)Permission denied: exec of '/usr/lib/cgi-bin/printenv.pl' failed [Mon Oct 24 11:04:25 2011] [error] [client 127.0.0.1] Premature end of script headers: printenv.pl Any suggestions on how I can fix this and run CGI scripts on my localhost?

  One of the new features is URL-based navigation which is useful for creating intranet links or auto-generating email links (such as from workflow systems, etc). For IIS 6 and earlier, the format is as follows: http://machine/drm-client/Logon.aspx? app=<appname>&action=go&ver=<version name>&hier=<hier name>&node=<node name> Just replace the fields with their appropriate values (URL-encoded of course). <node name> is optional. If provided it will open the hierarchy and expand directly to the target node. Otherwise the hierarchy is opened to the top node. Note that if the specified version is not loaded it will be loaded automatically.

  A while ago Spotify (the streaming music service) came out with a preview for Linux of their client. I had succesfully run it throughout 10.04. Now I'm on 10.10, I can't seem to find it in the package manager, let alone install it. Software Sources gives me this; Failed to fetch http://repository.spotify.com/dists/stable/Release Unable to find expected entry non-free/source/Sources in Meta-index file (malformed Release file?) Some index files failed to download, they have been ignored, or old ones used instead. So...as I'm paying for Spotify what...umm...do I do? :P
