• small IIS web farm-create an Active Directory domain or no?

  We have a smallish web farm of < 5 Windows 2008 servers. Some do data, most do IIS hosting. Is it a good/bad idea to set up a domain controller and put all in the same "production" domain? We want to avoid a world where we have to sync multiple admin passwords between the boxes (or share admin credentials among the team). Presumably, the DC would be just another VM, so hardware cost doesn't enter into the discussion.

• Run a command as another user within apache

  I have a web application that runs a program which needs X. I'm using xvfb to launch it; I want to run it as another user. I could probably do sudo -u username -p password my command. However, I'm not feeling too good about storing the users password in plain text. Is there a "smarter" way of doing this?

  Hello, I'm looking for a nice way to add / remote ips (and possibly interact with an asset inventory system to track where ips are), start / stop processes, download logs, and all around genearal system admin duties from one place. It's okay if I require more than 1 program. That would still be better than having 50 million terminals open and trying to trace ip assignments etc on whiteboards.   Hi, I am trying to setup a secure vpn server (Ipsec l2tp) on windows so I can connect to it using my mobile mac or any other windows pc. It seems it is quite a hassle to do this.   Ok, i have cisco ePC 3208 router, and cable internet goes in router via cable and router is emiting wireless. It can work without computer and it is working fine. Now i want to have capiteve portal with home page for my buisness and user logins. Is it possible that i use computer as gateway for captive portal, so when user goes to wireless it will redirected to computer local server for authorization and then passed by if user and pass is good, or i need another router or wifi acess point?

• SConfig - option 12). restore graphical user interface - not present

  Started off with a Server Core install to which I then added the GUI with: Install-WindowsFeature Server-Gui-Shell, Server-Gui-Mgmt-Infra So far so good, I then removed the GUI again to get back to text only mode with: Remove-WindowsFeature Server-Gui-Shell, Server-Gui-Mgmt-Infra Now at this point I should beable to use SConfig option 12 to reinstall the GUI again but that SConfig option is missing: "12) Restore Graphical User Interface (GUI)" not present, how can I get SConfig to display this option? Has anyone else noticed that this option is missing. Thanks, Nick

• Index a set of files to search their text quickly?

  I have a unique need: I am frequently searching a large set of text files for a keyword. Right now, I open up Notepad++ and use the "Find in files" feature. It works just fine, but with the amount of files, each search takes several minutes to complete. Is there a good program more suited for this purpose, perhaps that indexes a set of files and then lets you search the set repeatedly and very quickly? It would greatly speed up my workflow.

  I'm setting up a freebsd router and want certain IPs on my network to be forwarded to our local webserver if they make port 80 requests. An example would be - banned user tries to surf the web, but all his requests are forwarded to the web page which notifies him that he is banned. As I understand I can use IPFW for this and maybe NATD. I would be grateful if someone could show me a good example on how to do it.

I'm moreso looking for suggestions for Intellisense-type plugins...code completion...maybe easy directory browsing (other than the standard 'edit.' command).   Trying to setup django to take subdomains and use different settings file based on subdomain dns is setup as wildcards apache mod_vhost_alias sounded like good option, it did not work SetEnv DJANGO_SETTINGS_MODULE site.settings.%1 gets this error ImportError: Could not import settings 'site.settings.%1' can mod_vhost_alias be made to work somehow? can rewrite module be used to pass along subdomain to django settings? is there any other way to pick up different settings files based on subdomain

My configuration like this: 1-) I configured my domain to total dns control by setting nameservers to total dns control's. 2-) In total dns control panel i set A host to directly my VPS's ip address. 3-) Also i configured mx records to google apps. Everythings looks good but i am thinking that is this technuqie has any negative effects ? Thanks
