• Pinning ipython3 qtconlsole to launcher

  I've installed both ipython (which uses Python 2.7) and ipython3, and the respective qtconsole packages. Both work when I call them from the terminal like ipython qtconsole. However, when I search for them in the dash home, only the 2.7 versions (of both the shell and qtconsole) appear, as executables. Searching for ipython3 only yields the ipython3 file from /usr/bin. Changing to the "application lens" doesn't affect the results. Also, even if I can start both from the terminal, I can only pin the running 2.7 version to the launcher -- or, to be more exact, I can pin the v3 console, but the icon looks somehow blurred, and it doesn't start anything when I click it. So, whats happening here? Is the v3 package hidden somehow?

• How do I make the correct career decision in regards to product manager/QA vs programmer?

  I'm curious about how to approach the issue of whether I should focus on programming or on QA/testing/product management. I know that the latter seems like a broad category( if so, think of it as "general IT support" for now). At the moment I'm stronger in QA/prod. mgt ; however I'd like to switch more to programming, and I see I may have this opportunity. Wouldn't it be easier to switch to QA/prod. mgt in the future, if I go into programming now; rather than trying the reverse-order(i.e. if I decided later to go into coding.. say around mid-30s then it'd likely be harder). Just looking for any advice or tips about how to see more clearly. Part of me is scared I can't handle the programming side, but part of me says since there's demand and I'm interested that it's still worth a shot.

• Programmer's career path

  I've been working as a programmer for the last few years - different companies and freelancing, mostly developing internal-business web applications (well, that's the current model of development, it seems). Besides simple coding I was working on specs, designing applications, and all those around-like things. My question is, what's the career path I should be aiming for? Is it like working on code for the rest of my life? :) Or do programmers make a good manager-position people (I know, those require quite different set of skills) and I should try to improve myself to this direction? I know it's very subjective. Thing is, lately I find myself much more into the designing/working on specs part of the development project then the coding itself. How do you see it? Would you like to go from development to management? Would you like to work on a project with a manager that used to be a coder? Would you like to hire one? :)

• Not enough space left in the hard drive. How to proceed?

  Where do I begin... I can hardly do anything on Ubuntu 12.04. I am very close to removing and returning to Windows. First I could not load it because the graphics appeared to be running low but somehow that stopped happening and I could log on. Now I can not download anything or I get this message Cannot write: No space left on device. I tried trouble shooting this issue but every time I try and fix the problem I am blocked by this message E: Write error - write (28: No space left on device) E: Can't mmap an empty file E: Failed to truncate file - ftruncate (9: Bad file descriptor) E: The package lists or status file could not be parsed or opened. $ OLD=$(ls -tr /boot/vmlinuz-* | head -n -2 | cut -d- -f2- | awk '{print "linux-image-" $0}') Ubuntu is also running incredibly slow and I cant get anything done! Please help this is driving me mad!

• Laptop won't get to grub after meddling with kernels

  I recently found out I had different kernel versions installed, so I removed the 3.9 kernel as proposed in this answer on my earlier question. After that, I updated my grub, but My laptop won't seem to reach it. • Creating meaningful and engaging quests

  Kill X number of monsters. Gather Y number of items (usually by killing X number of monsters). Deliver this NPC's package to this other NPC who is far far away. etc. Yeah. These quests are easy to implement, easy to complete, but also very boring after the first few times. It's kind of disingenuous to call them quests really; they're more like chores or errands. What ideas for quests have people seen that were well designed, immersive, and rewarding? What specific things did the developers do that made it so? What are some ideas you would use (or have used) to make quests more interesting?

• Comparing my version with the clean install

  I've been using and upgrading Ubuntu since the version 9. Of course, I have 13.04 now and after installing a clean 13.04 to another computer, I've noticed quite a few differences (plymouth, lightdm, some software behaves differently, etc.). I've done quite a few customizations during the period so it's probably due to that. So I wonder if there is a way to see what's different between my and the clean version. Not the complete file list diff, but perhaps software package differences (synaptic?) or something that will be easier to read and compare. Is there a way?

• How to prevent script not to stop after apt-get?

  I keep some bash snippets and copy&paste them when I needed for management. But I discovered apt-get cancels script execution. Here's my script where problematic. apt-get -y install gcc g++ make cmake perl cd ~/ mkdir t1 cd t1 I copy & paste this script on OS X Terminal to Ubuntu 12.04 LTS server (fresh install on VM) Script always stop after apt-get finished. I run this command with root account like this. ssh user1@server <password…> sudo su <password…> apt-get -y install gcc g++ make cmake perl cd ~/ mkdir t1 cd t1 Can this be a problem? Or why my script stops after apt-get finished, and how to make it to continue?

• Trouble updating metapackage

  I'm having trouble downloading xfce4 metapackage. I don't have a desktop yet just cmd line and this is my first time on linux. sudo apt-get install xfce4 brings back Unable to locate package xfce4 Does that with all packages, leads me to sudo apt-get update Leaves me with temporary failure resolving 'downloads-distro.mongodb.org' Read some solutions to fix this but it had me going in circles with no avail. Need to get this working from cmd prompt. So I'm having trouble updating and am lost here without a desktop client. If anyone can help that would be great.

• Pidgin not present in 12.10 repositories, how do i get one?

  I want to install Pidgin on my 12.10 clean install system. When I go to the Software Center and try to install the client I get an error saying:- Not found There isn’t a software package called “pidgin” in your current software sources. Any ideas which repositories i need to import to get this done.   So far I've found very little information on the scheduling policy, resource management policy of Azure HPC Scheduler. I would appreciate any kind of information regarding some of these questions: What scheduling policy does a Head Node use to scatter jobs to Compute Nodes? Does Azure Scheduler use prior information about the jobs (compute time, memory demands ...) ? If 'yes', how it gets this information? Does Azure Scheduler split a job into several parallel jobs on one Compute node? Does it have any protection from Compute Node failures? (what it does when a compute node stops responding) Does it support addition/subtraction of Compute nodes? Is it possible to cancel a job? P.S. I'm aware of the MSDN resource Windows Azure HPC Scheduler. I found only information of how to use this Scheduler but almost nothing about how it works inside.

• Can I copy large files faster without using the file cache?

  After adding the preload package, my applications seem to speed up but if I copy a large file, the file cache grows by more than double the size of the file. By transferring a single 3-4 GB virtualbox image or video file to an external drive, this huge cache seems to remove all the preloaded applications from memory, leading to increased load times and general performance drops. Is there a way to copy large, multi-gigabyte files without caching them (i.e. bypassing the file cache)? Or a way to whitelist or blacklist specific folders from being cached?

• FatCow and iPage real deal?

  I need a cheap host that I can upgrade if needed for a startup. From searching, FatCow and iPage seem reliable and inexpensive web hosting services with a Unix OS and good bandwidth + disk space. I suspect they were bought from the same company. They propose to offer unlimited bandwidth/disc space and perks like AdSense/Facebook credit however, they're packages range from 1-3 years @ 3.15 USD/mo, there isn't a monthly package but they do allow you to cancel at anytime and there servers run on wind-mill generated energy which is a plus. I was suspicious because I couldnt seem to find one negative review about them, just affiliate pages until I read a review explaining they're strict policies on copywritten data. Has anyone experience with one of these two hosts?

Glenn Brookshear.And In chapter 7,there is one passage as follows: In fact, it is often within this phase(modification) that a piece of software is discarded under the pretense (too often true) that it is easier to develop a new system from scratch than to modify the existing package successfully. When I read this,an article by Joel occurred to me which mentions how Mozilla shouldn't have written its browser from scratch.(The article is here) So,Is it mostly true that it's easier to develop a new system from scratch than to modify the existing one?Or it's closely related to the complexity of the system?

  When your SharePoint Solution package include third party or external dlls , you will often see your solution fail to deploy due to the locking of the dlls. Today I will show you how to find which process locks your dlls using Process Explorer. 1. Here is an example that your solution fails to deploy due to dll being locked. 2. Start the explorer by double click the procexp.exe 3. From the find tab click Find Handle or DLL 4.Type the your dll name and click Search 5. I can see all the processes that use my dlls at the moment, it looks like the iis , visual studio and SharePoint timer services might be the trouble. From my experience , it could be Visual studio. 6. Close visual studio and redeploy my solution, it works like charm. Re-search the dll, you can see Visual studio is not in the results.

• High temperature on my laptop with Radeon Mobility HD4670

  As almost everyone here, I guess, in these days I downloaded Quantal Quetzal to give it a try. However I noticed that my laptop runs fairly hot with cooling fans almost always on, even sitting in the desktop doing nothing. I downloaded XSensor to read temperature sensors, and I saw that while CPU stays on about 65°C, so quiet normal I guess, the GPU sits at 75°C. In comparison my actual Windows 7 installation, which dual boots witb Quantal, stays at 59°C CPU and 65°C. So I went reading and learned that AMD dropped support for my video card from fglrx package, and that fglrx-legacy won't support 1.13 Xorg, so I'm basically stuck with OSS drivers. So I was guessing if there's anything I can try, and if it's possible that the OSS drivers could be the cause of the high temperature?

• How to get out of supporting deadend sales pitches?

  As part of being a programmer, you often are asked to provide estimates/ make slideware / do technical demos for Sales teams to present to end-clients. Sometimes we go along for the 'technical' discussions or 'strategic capability planning' or some similar mumbo-jumbo. Sometimes, you kind of know which ones are totally going to fail and are not worth pursuing but the Sales guys present fake optimism and extract 'few more slides' out of you or the 'last conference call'. These don't lead to anywhere and are just a waste of time from other tasks for the week. My question is how do you get out of these situations without coming across as non-cooperative. Updated after Kate Gregory's answer: The problem is related to projects we know are doomed (from the technical feedback we've received) But Sales ain't convinced since they've just had a call higher up the management chain - so it's definitely going ahead !

• Fixing a broken toolbox (In Visual Studio 2010 SP1)

  I was recently running into a situation where every time I opened Visual Studio 2010 SP1, the following message would appear for about 60 seconds or so: "Loading toolbox content from package Microsoft.VisualStudio.IDE.Toolbox.ControlInstaller.ToolboxInstallerPackage '{2C98B35-07DA-45F1-96A3-BE55D91C8D7A}'" After finally get fed up with the issue, I started researching it and decided that I’d share the steps that I took to resolve it below: I first made a complete backup of my registry. I then removed the following key: [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Wow6432Node\Microsoft\VisualStudio\10.0\Packages\{2c298b35-07da-45f1-96a3-be55d91c8d7a}] I went to the following directory: C:\Users\Your Name Here\AppData\Local\Microsoft\VisualStudio\10.0\ and created a folder called bk and moved the .tbd files to that folder (they are hidden so you will have to show all files). I then removed the .tbd files in the root directory. I then launched Visual Studio 2010 SP1 again and it recreated those files and the problem was gone.   Is there a debian/ubuntu policy on softlinking things to another location in opt once they're installed properly in usr/share or usr/lib? Here's a simple example: Packaging up dnsenum. It's a REALLY simple package (4 files). A perl script, two wordlists, and a readme. So from what I gather: The wordlists should go in usr/share/dnsenum/* The perl script itself would go in usr/lib/dnsenum/ The readme would go in usr/share/doc/dnsenum/ Add a wrapper bash script that goes in bin and just passes arguments to dnsenum.pl. The question is this: If there are various tools that provide wordlists or some other shared resource, is there a policy on linking all the wordlists from different packages in to /opt/wordlists/ ? It seems like the "right" thing to do respecting the directory structure while still making things convenient.
