• Canon MF3200 Printer Problems

  I bought a Canon MF3200 and used it on an old Windows laptop. The laptop broke, and now I'm trying to setup the printer on a laptop with Windows 7. I downloaded the new driver, and Windows was able to install it and mark it "Ready to Go." But whenever I try to print, an error comes up and it doesn't print. I tried to troubleshoot, to no avail. What else can I do? Any ideas on what the error might be?

• Ubuntu - changing another users file permissions

  I have setup Ubuntu as a development web server - however I am experiencing problems with file permissions. I have 2 users, user1 and user2, and they both have been put into the group www-data. I have uploaded a new file with user1 so the file is owned by user1 and the www-data group. At present if user2 wants to modify the permissions on that file to say 777 - they cannot. Is there a way to allow any users within a group to be able to modifiy permissions etc.. on this file? I have tried changing umask to 002 and a few other combinations that were suggested without luck.

• Software restriction policies set in the registry don't update Local Group Policy

  The joys of a Samba domain... First off Domain Group policy can't be used until Samba 4 arrives. We need to setup Software Restriction Policies (SRPs) on most of the computers in our Samba domain and I would dearly like to automate this. (We are moving away from just disabling the Windows installer). The traditional way is to set SRPs using Local Group Policy (LGP) Computer Conf-Windows Settings-SRP but this involves visiting every machine as it can't be set using in NTConfig.pol. It is possible to attempt to create the SRPs directly in the registry: [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\Windows\Safer\CodeIdentifiers\262144\Paths\{30628f61-eb47-4d87-823b-6683a09eda87}] "LastModified"=hex(b):40,a2,94,09,b5,5d,ca,01 "Description"="" "SaferFlags"=dword:00000000 "ItemData"="C:\\location\\subfolder" SaferFlags DWORD seems to be what turns it on or off, but although this seems to work it does not update the Local Group Policy - SRPs still show as "No SRPs Defined". Where does the LGP store this setting - is it even in the registry and more importantly - Is there a cleverer way of setting up SRPs?

• configure Reverse DNS for VPS with amazon route 53, ISP or Amazon Route 53 issue?

  i have a VPS hosted with myhosting.com, the domain is hosted in godaddy and the DNS records are managed in AMAZON route 53. i was told by myhosting support that i should create a PTR record on my DNS but i have read that in order to reverse DNS for an IP this record should be created in the ISP records wich sounds have sense. because if i want to get the domain name via an IP the request will never be forwarded to AMAZON instead it will ask the ISP for it am i rigth or MyHosting support is correct and i should setup PTR record on Amazon which i already did THANKS Oscar

• How do I configure an interface to have *both* a DHCP address and a static address in Ubuntu?

  In a lab setup, I want eth0 on a Ubuntu server box to get a DHCP address for talking to the outside world, and I also want to assign it a static 10.x.y.z address for talking to other boxes on the local network that have 10.x.y.z addresses. I want to do this by editing /etc/network/interfaces. The man page for /etc/network/interfaces is modeled after "here's a bunch of examples, I hope you can figure out the actual rules on your own". I don't see a way to give one interface two addresses using two different methods (static and dhcp), and initial fumbling didn't produce useful results.

• ODI 11g – Scripting Repository Creation

  Here’s a quick post on how to create both master and work repositories in one simple dialog, its using the groovy capabilities in ODI 11g and the groovy swing builder components. So if you want more/less take the groovy script and change, its easy stuff. The groovy script odi_create_repos.groovy is here, just open it in ODI before connecting and you will be able to create both master and work repositories with ease – or check the groovy out and script your own automation – you can construct the master, work and runtime repositories, so if you are embedding ODI as your DI engine this may be very useful. When you click ‘Create Repository’ you will see the following in the log as the master repository starts to be created; ====================================================== Repository Creation Started.... ====================================================== Master Repository Creation Started.... Then the completion message followed by the work repository creation and final completion message. Master Repository Creation Completed. Work Repository Creation Started. Work Repository Creation Completed. ====================================================== Repository Creation Completed Successfully ====================================================== Script exited. If any error is hit, the script just exits and prints any error to the log. • Multiple URLs Single Server

  Hi, In the DNS I have setup multiple URLs for my website (all pointing to same server). The entries in DNS looks like as below: Host TTL Numeric IP www .mysite.net 7200 192.168.31.12 @ (None) .mysite.net 7200 192.168.31.12 mycompany .mysite.net 7200 192.168.31.12 I wrote a code on Login.aspx page to check the URL and navigate to appropriate company login page. So if I type www.mysite.net or mysite.net then I am getting navigated to standard login page. But when I type mycompany.mysite.net still I am getting navigated to standard login page. But when I type https://mycompany.mysite.net then I am getting navigated to company specific login page. Why I need to type complete URL with https to get navigated to compay specific login page? Why it is not working just with mycompany.mysite.net? Any help of this is highly appriciated. Thanks, Amit

• My VS 2010 and ASP.NET 4 Talks Online

  The past 7 years I’ve done an annual all day event in Arizona – organized by the most excellent Scott Cate (who always does a phenomenal job organizing the event and making it a great one). Earlier this month I visited and presented 4+ hours of content covering VS 2010, ASP.NET 4 and ASP.NET MVC 2.  NextSlide.com – a great .NET shop local to Arizona who has a great product for sharing presentations – volunteered to record the talks and publish them for free using their online presentation tool.  The recordings they did turned out really, really great – and their online player (which combines slides + camera of me + demos in one experience) is awesome.  Below you can watch the first two segments of my event – which cover VS 2010 and ASP.NET 4 – for free online using the NextSlide.com player experience.  I’ll post a link to my ASP.NET MVC 2 segment a little later in a separate blog post.  If you’ve never seen my present these talks before and are interested in the content then I’d recommend checking them out – as these recordings do a really good job capturing them. • Using apache reverse proxy for Domino inotes 8.5

  I have setup access for the users to their mailfiles on Domino 8.5.1 using Inotes. The reverse proxy in use is Apache. It works fine. This is the current configuration i am using. • XenServer 5.5 Error adding additional Server to Ressource Pool

  I'm running Citrix XenServer 5.5 as a testsetup, with Openfiler providing Storage via NFS. I tried to setup a Ressource Pool to test Live migration but I'm unable to a my 2. Server to the Pool. It fails after about 10sec with the Error: 4/26/2010 2:54:52 PM Error: Adding server 'u-173-c047.XXX.XXX' to pool 'Portland' - Internal error: Stunnel.Stunnel_error("") I'm kind of lost right now where to look whats causing this, and the Error is not really of any help. Are there logs availible somewhere besides in XenCenter, which might be helpful? Any Ideas what is causing this? Thanks

• Restrict iPhone messaging to corprate osx server messaging service

  I have not found much information about this. We have company owned iPhone and iPads. We would like our employees to be able to message but require all messaging traffic to go through our local mountain lion osx server (not setup yet). How would the phones and server need to be configured to accomplish this. Specifically is it possible to restrict the user from adding additional accounts? How about another app that would use the server? Do you know of any good documentation on setting up this service on osx server and iPhone? I am open to other solutions, opensource messaging servers.....

• Windows XP SP3 on Macbook Has Limited Disk Space

  Hi Guys, I setup Windows XP SP3 on a 40 GB partition using bootcamp (partition formatted for NTFS). For some reason, the hard drive properties only show ~3 GB of space available. Funny thing is though, I've hardly installed anything on the system... and if I open the windows explorer, select all directories, and check properties, it appears that I'm only using 11 GB of space. What gives? I thought there might be hidden files/folders so I enabled the option to show it but still nada. Has anyone come across this before? Any suggestions for how to proceed here?

• Receiving SSL certificate errors only from some clients

  I am receiving SSL certificate errors from Chrome (latest version (23.0.1271.52 beta-m) and Internet Explorer 6 (not used) on my home desktop machine (Windows XP SP2). In Firefox, it works fine on this PC. My laptop and work desktop (both Windows 7) work fine. Most SSL website checking sites report that the certificate and chain up to the root CA are setup correctly, but I have come across 2 that that say I have an invalid certificate but don't give much information on what part is failing. I know it used to work properly on this desktop (in Chrome and IE) in the past, but I'm not sure what has changed that is causing the site to fail in these browsers. • SQL Server 2005 jobs running twice in a row - using LiteSpeed

  Howdy! I have a SQL server (2005) backing up to a network share, who has a group of maintenance plans setup through LiteSpeed to backup different DBs. They were just set up to run two sub plans on different schedules for full/diff backups and did that just fine for a couple of months. Then I added "Clean Up" task to the subplans. Ever since that point, the backup creates another bak right after the first bak job is completed. I removed the clean up item from the subplan, and it still creates two baks when ran. Both the SQL Activity Monitor and the machine's windows application log show just one job being executed. I did this same thing to a couple of other servers backing up to the same location, and they are behaving correctly. Thoughts?

• One Linux server has two timer

  The time on one of our Linux box is very weird. Whenever I call date 3 times, the 4th call will give a wrong time(usually 1 hour later). I have setup cron to sync with ntp server. We have 20+ similar servers, only this one has this problem. Any idea? Thanks. • Huawei E170 on Linux?

  Related to this question, I need to know if the specific combination of Ubuntu 9.10 + the Huawei E170 (HSDPA broadband modem USB stick) will work? Bonus points for a link to a webpage that decsribes exactly how it is done! Specifically, I'm in Austria and the telco is A1, but I hope that the setup would be the same regardless of location/provider. I have found these two pages that seem horribly complicated to a Linux noob. Is there a simpler way, or do I really need to dive into that? Your input is much appreciated! If I can get confirmation that it's supported, then I'd switch to Ubuntu Netbook Remix, because I'm already running Ubuntu on the main pc at home and I'd like to keep things simple.

• Postfix on IspCP cannot send to google apps mail if it is in the same domain

  In my vps setup I have ispcp omega 1.0.7 installed. Everything works fine except the fact that postfix cannot send to google apps mail when the domain of google apps is also registered in ispcp. Postfix sends an email to normal addresses (hotmail, yahoo, gmail etc). I use external dns. There is also a discussion I started in the ispcp forum here .mail.log file provides these messages: mail for exampledomain.gr loops back to myself". postfix/bounce: sender non-delivery notification. postfix/qmgr: removed Any help would be appreciated.

• Trying to configure DNS on a Godaddy Virtual Dedicated host, Mediatemple Domain Registration

  A client of mine purchased VD hosting with Godaddy and a domain name with Mediatemple. I've never configured DNS from scratch, and I'm finding it very difficult to find any sort of explanation on how to go about it. As of right now, Mediatemple is pointing to the Godaddy's ns1.domaincontrol.com and ns2.domaincontrol.com nameservers. The VD hosting on Godaddy (via their Simple Control Panel) has options to "Add a new domain", which brings you through a wizard of sorts that asks you if the domain has already been registered (yes), what it is (dclowd9901.com for this example), create a system username and password for it (with checkboxes for SSH and FTP access), which level of user can administer it, and whether a mail account should be setup. When complete, it also creates a zone file. In this zone file, the Primary nameserver is ns1.dclowd9901.com; the records are as follow (where 12.23.12.34 is the presumed host): @ A 12.23.12.34 @ NS ns1 @ NS ns2 ns1 A 12.23.12.34 ns2 A 12.23.12.34 @ MX mail www A 12.23.12.34 ftp A 12.23.12.34 ssh A 12.23.12.34 mail A 12.23.12.34 If anyone can shed any light on this for me, explain to me the interactions between the registrar and the host and so on, I'd be very grateful. • SnagIt Live Writer Plug-in updated

  I've updated my free SnagIt Live Writer plug-in again as there have been a few issues with the new release of SnagIt 11. It appears that TechSmith has trimmed the COM object and removed a bunch of redundant functionality which has broken the older plug-in. I also updated the layout and added SnagIt's latest icons to the form. Finally I've moved the source code to Github for easier browsing and downloading for anybody interested and easier updating for me. This plug-in is not new - I created it a number of years back, but I use the hell out it both for my blogging and for a few internal apps that with MetaWebLogApi to update online content. The plug-in makes it super easy to add captured image content directly into a post and upload it to the server. What does it do? Once installed the plug-in shows up in the list of plug-ins. When you click it launches a SnagIt Capture Dialog: Typically you set the capture settings once, and then save your settings. After that a single click or ENTER press gets you off capturing. If you choose the Show in SnagIt preview window option, the image you capture is is displayed in the preview editor to mark up images, which is one of SnagIt's great strengths IMHO. The image editor has a bunch of really nice effects for framing and marking up and highlighting of images that is really sweet. Here's a capture from a previous image in the SnagIt editor where I applied the saw tooth cutout effect: Images are saved to disk and can optionally be deleted immediately, since Live Writer creates copies of original images in its own folders before uploading the files. No need to keep the originals around typically. The plug-in works with SnagIt Versions 7 and later. It's a simple thing of course - nothing magic here, but incredibly useful at least to me. If you're using Live Writer and you own a copy of SnagIt do yourself a favor and grab this and install it as a plug-in.
