  • How to build a programmer's wiki

    - by Llistes Sugra
For years I've missed a wiki so everyone could describe the new tools programmed, the servers where they are running, svn information, the internal rules of programming, how-tos, code samples, etc. The wiki might be used for the dozen of programmers in the company and the externals. I've been using a pmwiki (easy install) and now I want a better approach. What wiki do you use? What plug-ins? Do you think there are better systems than wiki for this?

  • Sharepoint database connection issue after upgrade to SQL Server 2008 R2

    - by Neil Hoff
I took a backup of all our Sharepoint WSS 3.0 databases and restored them to a new Windows 2008 R2 server. The new SQL server has the same name and IP address as the old one. The only difference between the two is the new one has SQL 2008 R2 and the old one has SQL 2005. When I navigate to the sharepoint url I get this error: Cannot connect to the configuration database. I checked the logs at this location: "%commonprogramfiles%/Microsoft Shared/web server extensions/12/Logs" and found this error: System.Data.SqlClient.SqlException: Login failed. The login is from an untrusted domain and cannot be used with Windows authentication. Any ideas?

  • Where would you document standardized complex data that is passed between many objects and methods?

    - by Eli
Hi All, I often find myself with fairly complex data that represents something that my objects will be working on. For example, in a task-list app, several objects might work with an array of tasks, each of which has attributes, temporal expressions, sub tasks and sub sub tasks, etc. One object will collect data from web forms, standardize it into a format consumable by the class that will save them to the database, another object will pull them from the database, put them in the standard format and pass them to the display object, or the update object, etc. The data itself can become a fairly complex series of arrays and sub arrays, representing a 'task' or list of tasks. For example, the below might be one entry in a task list, in the format that is consumable by the various objects that will work on it. Normally, I just document this in a file somewhere with an example. However, I am thinking about the best way to add it to something like PHPDoc, or another standard doc system. Where would you document your consumable data formats that are for many or all of the objects / methods in your app? Array ( [Meta] => Array ( //etc. ) [Sched] => Array ( [SchedID] => 32 [OwnerID] => 2 [StatusID] => 1 [DateFirstTask] => 2011-02-28 [DateLastTask] => [MarginMonths] => 3 ) [TemporalExpressions] => Array ( [0] => Array ( [type] => dw [TemporalExpID] => 3 [ord] => 2 [day] => 6 [month] => 4 ) [1] => Array ( [type] => dm [TemporalExpID] => 32 [day] => 28 [month] => 2 ) ) [Task] => Array ( [SchedTaskID] => 32 [SchedID] => 32 [OwnerID] => 2 [UserID] => 5 [ClientID] => 9 [Title] => Close Prior Year [Body] => [DueTime] => ) [SubTasks] => Array ( [101] => Array ( [SchedSubTaskID] => 101 [ParentST] => [RootT] => 32 [UserID] => 2 [Title] => Review Profit and Loss by Class [Body] => [DueDiff] => 0 ) [102] => Array ( [SchedSubTaskID] => 102 [ParentST] => [RootT] => 32 [UserID] => 2 [Title] => Review Balance Sheet [Body] => [DueDiff] => 0 ) [103] => Array ( [SchedSubTaskID] => 103 [ParentST] => [RootT] => 32 [UserID] => 2 [Title] => Review Current Year for Prior Year Expenses to Accrue [Body] => Look at Journal Entries that are templates as well. • How to optimize this SQL query for a rectangular region?

    - by Andrew B.
I'm trying to optimize the following query, but it's not clear to me what index or indexes would be best. I'm storing tiles in a two-dimensional plane and querying for rectangular regions of that plane. The table has, for the purposes of this question, the following columns: id: a primary key integer world_id: an integer foreign key which acts as a namespace for a subset of tiles tileY: the Y-coordinate integer tileX: the X-coordinate integer value: the contents of this tile, a varchar if it matters. I have the following indexes: "ywot_tile_pkey" PRIMARY KEY, btree (id) "ywot_tile_world_id_key" UNIQUE, btree (world_id, "tileY", "tileX") "ywot_tile_world_id" btree (world_id) And this is the query I'm trying to optimize: ywot=> EXPLAIN ANALYZE SELECT * FROM "ywot_tile" WHERE ("world_id" = 27685 AND "tileY" <= 6 AND "tileX" <= 9 AND "tileX" >= -2 AND "tileY" >= -1 ); QUERY PLAN ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Bitmap Heap Scan on ywot_tile (cost=11384.13..149421.27 rows=65989 width=168) (actual time=79.646..80.075 rows=96 loops=1) Recheck Cond: ((world_id = 27685) AND ("tileY" <= 6) AND ("tileY" >= (-1)) AND ("tileX" <= 9) AND ("tileX" >= (-2))) -> Bitmap Index Scan on ywot_tile_world_id_key (cost=0.00..11367.63 rows=65989 width=0) (actual time=79.615..79.615 rows=125 loops=1) Index Cond: ((world_id = 27685) AND ("tileY" <= 6) AND ("tileY" >= (-1)) AND ("tileX" <= 9) AND ("tileX" >= (-2))) Total runtime: 80.194 ms So the world is fixed, and we are querying for a rectangular region of tiles. Some more information that might be relevant: All the tiles for a queried region may or may not be present The height and width of a queried rectangle are typically about 10x10-20x20 For any given (world, X) or (world, Y) pair, there may be an unbounded number of matching tiles, but the worst case is currently around 10,000, and typically there are far fewer. New tiles are created far less frequently than existing ones are updated (changing the 'value'), and that itself is far less frequent that just reading as in the query above. The only thing I can think of would be to index on (world, X) and (world, Y). My guess is that the database would be able to take those two sets and intersect them. The problem is that there is a potentially unbounded number of matches for either for either of those. Is there some other kind of index that would be more appropriate?

  • documenting black-box test cases

    - by Blux
Hi everyone, I want to write an initial (black box) test cases for one of my university projects. I haven't started coding yet, I'm still in completing the SRS document and i should specify the test cases i'm going to implement after the coding. The project is web based, and i should follow this template in each test case: +++++ Test case ID: Author: Initial state: Preconditions: Use Case: Test input: Expected output: ++++++ The thing is, i don't know what is the difference between "initial state" and "preconditions". In some of the test cases it's hard to differentiate between them. Like in "Edit Page" what should be the initial state and what should be the preconditions? any help will appreciated.=)

  • How do I get a linq to sql group by query into the asp.net mvc view?

    - by Brad Wetli
Sorry for the newbie question, but I have the following query that groups parking spaces by their garage, but I can't figure out how to iterate the data in the view. I guess I should strongly type the view but am a newbie and having lots of problems figuring this out. Any help would be appreciated. Public Function FindAllSpaces() Implements ISpaceRepository.FindAllSpaces Dim query = _ From s In db.spaces _ Order By s.name Ascending _ Group By s.garageid Into spaces = Group _ Order By garageid Ascending Return query End Function The controller is taking the query object as is and putting it into the viewdata.model and as stated the view is not currently strongly typed as I haven't been able to figure out how to do this. I have run the query successfully in linqpad.

  • What's the best way to select max over multiple fields in SQL?

    - by allyourcode
The I kind of want to do is select max(f1, f2, f3). I know this doesn't work, but I think what I want should be pretty clear (see update 1). I was thinking of doing select max(concat(f1, '--', f2 ...)), but this has various disadvantages. In particular, doing concat will probably slow things down. What's the best way to get what I want? update 1: The answers I've gotten so far aren't what I'm after. max works over a set of records, but it compares them using only one value; I want max to consider several values, just like the way order by can consider several values. update 2: Suppose I have the following table: id class_name order_by1 order_by_2 1 a 0 0 2 a 0 1 3 b 1 0 4 b 0 9 I want a query that will group the records by class_name. Then, within each "class", select the record that would come first if you ordered by order_by1 ascending then order_by2 ascending. The result set would consist of records 2 and 3. In my magical query language, it would look something like this: select max(* order by order_by1 ASC, order_by2 ASC) from table group by class_name

  • How do I do a where clause in sql and return a count back?

    - by chobo2
Hi I am using mssql and I want to make a query that returns a count back with a where clause. Like say I have a product Table ProductId ProductName Active So how would I make it I have like Select Count(*) From Product now I don't know how to filter it so it only could if Active = true; So if there are 3 active products then it would return a count of 3 even if there is a hundred rows in the db and the other 97 are only not active. so the where clause would be probably like where active = true I am not sure how to put them together though.

  • How to properly document programming languages?

    - by roydukkey
Where can I find information on how to properly document a programming language? What I mean is that there seems to be a standard way to document code. php.net and api.jquery.com seem to document there code the a similar way. For example, the trim() description on php.net. string trim ( string $str [, string $charlist ] ) And likewise on jquery.com .animate( properties, [ duration ], [ easing ], [ callback ] ) Does anyone even know what this syntax is called?

  • SQL Server: How to call a UDF, if available?

    - by Ian Boyd
Most systems will have a user-defined function (UDF) available. Some will not. i want to use the UDF if it's there: SELECT Users.*, dbo.UserGroupMembershipNames(Users.UserID) AS MemberOfGroupNames FROM Users Otherwise fallback to the acceptable alternative SELECT Users.*, (SELECT TOP 1 thing FROM Something WHERE Something.ID = Users.UserID) AS MemberGroupNames FROM Users How do? My first attempt, using the obvious solution, of course failed: SELECT Users.*, CASE WHEN (OBJECT_ID('dbo.UserGroupMembershipNames') IS NOT NULL) THEN dbo.UserGroupMembershipNames(Users.UserID) ELSE (SELECT TOP 1 thing FROM Something WHERE Something.ID = Users.UserID) END AS MemberOfGroupNames FROM Users for reasons beyond me

  • How can I SELECT rows with MAX(Column value), DISTINCT by another column in SQL?

    - by Kaptah
    My table is: id home datetime player resource ---|-----|------------|--------|--------- 1 | 10 | 04/03/2009 | john | 399 2 | 11 | 04/03/2009 | juliet | 244 5 | 12 | 04/03/2009 | borat | 555 3 | 10 | 03/03/2009 | john | 300 4 | 11 | 03/03/2009 | juliet | 200 6 | 12 | 03/03/2009 | borat | 500 7 | 13 | 24/12/2008 | borat | 600 8 | 13 | 01/01/2009 | borat | 700 I need to select each distinct "home" holding the maximum value of "datetime". Result would be: id home datetime player resource ---|-----|------------|--------|--------- 1 | 10 | 04/03/2009 | john | 399 2 | 11 | 04/03/2009 | juliet | 244 5 | 12 | 04/03/2009 | borat | 555 7 | 13 | 24/12/2008 | borat | 600 8 | 13 | 01/01/2009 | borat | 700 I have tried: // 1 ..by the MySQL manual: SELECT DISTINCT home, id, datetime as dt, player, resource FROM topten t1 WHERE datetime = (SELECT MAX(t2.datetime) FROM topten t2 GROUP BY home ) GROUP BY daytime ORDER BY daytime DESC Doesn't work. Result-set has 130 rows although database holds 187. Result includes some dublicates of 'home'. // 2 ..join SELECT s1.id, s1.home, s1.datetime, s1.player, s1.resource FROM topten s1 JOIN (SELECT id, MAX(datetime) AS dt FROM topten GROUP BY id) AS s2 ON s1.id = s2.id ORDER BY daytime Nope. Gives all the records. // 3 ..something exotic: With various results.

  • Why does LINQ-to-SQL Paging fail inside a function?

    - by ssg
Here I have an arbitrary IEnumerable<T>. And I'd like to page it using a generic helper function instead of writing Skip/Take pairs every time. Here is my function: IEnumerable<T> GetPagedResults<T>(IEnumerable<T> query, int pageIndex, int pageSize) { return query.Skip((pageIndex - 1) * pageSize).Take(pageSize); } And my code is: result = GetPagedResults(query, 1, 10).ToList(); This produces a SELECT statement without TOP 10 keyword. But this code below produces the SELECT with it: result = query.Skip((pageIndex - 1) * pageSize).Take(pageSize).ToList(); What am I doing wrong in the function?

  • SQL Server 2008 BULK INSERT causes more reads than writes. Why?

    - by sh1ng
I've huge a table (a few billion rows) with a clustered index and two non-clustered indices. A BULK INSERT operation produces 112000 reads and only 383 writes (duration 19948ms). It's very confusing to me. Why do reads exceed writes? How can I reduce it? update query insert bulk DenormalizedPrice4 ([DP_ID] BigInt, [DP_CountryID] Int, [DP_OperatorID] SmallInt, [DP_OperatorPriceID] BigInt, [DP_SpoID] Int, [DP_TourTypeID] Int, [DP_CheckinDate] Date, [DP_CurrencyID] SmallInt, [DP_Cost] Decimal(9,2), [DP_FirstCityID] Int, [DP_FirstHotelID] Int, [DP_FirstBuildingID] Int, [DP_FirstHotelGlobalStarID] Int, [DP_FirstHotelGlobalMealID] Int, [DP_FirstHotelAccommodationTypeID] Int, [DP_FirstHotelRoomCategoryID] Int, [DP_FirstHotelRoomTypeID] Int, [DP_Days] TinyInt, [DP_Nights] TinyInt, [DP_ChildrenCount] TinyInt, [DP_AdultsCount] TinyInt, [DP_TariffID] Int, [DP_DepartureCityID] Int, [DP_DateCreated] SmallDateTime, [DP_DateDenormalized] SmallDateTime, [DP_IsHide] Bit, [DP_FirstHotelAccommodationID] Int) with (CHECK_CONSTRAINTS) No triggers & foreign keys Cluster Index by DP_ID and two non-unique indexes(with fillfactor=90%) And one more thing DB stored on RAID50 with stripe size 256K

  • What does really happen when we do a BEGIN TRAN in SQL Server 2005?

    - by Misnomer
Hi all, I came across this issue or maybe something I didn't realize but I did a Begin Tran and had some code inside it and never ran a commit or rollback as I forgot about it. That caused all many of the database queries or even just a simple select top 1000 command were just sitting on loading..? Now it probably has put some locks on the tables I guess since it did not let me query them..but I just wanted to know what exactly happened and what are the practices to be followed here ?

  • linq-to-sql "an attempt has been made to attach or add an entity that is not new"?

    - by Curtis White
I've been getting several errors: cannot add an entity with a key that is already in use An attempt has been made to attach or add an entity that is not new, perhaps having been loaded from another datacontext In case 1, this stems from trying to set the key for an entity versus the entity. In case 2, I'm not attaching an entity but I am doing this: MyParent.Child = EntityFromOtherDataContext; I've been using using the pattern of wrap everything with a using datacontext. In my case, I am using this in a web forms scenario, and obviously moving the datacontext object to a class wide member variables solves this. My questions are thus 2 fold: How can I get rid of these errors and not have to structure my program in an odd way or pass the datacontext around while keeping the local-wrap pattern? I assume I could make another hit to the database but that seems very inefficient. Would most people recommend that moving the datacontext to the class wide scope is desirable for web pages?

  • How to document thrown exceptions in c#/.net

    - by Arnold Zokas
I am currently writing a small framework that will be used internally by other developers within the company. I want to provide good Intellisense information, but I am not sure how to document thrown exceptions. In the following example: public void MyMethod1() { MyMethod2(); // also may throw InvalidOperationException } public void MyMethod2() { System.IO.File.Open(somepath...); // this may throw FileNotFoundException // also may throw DivideByZeroException } I know the markup for documenting exceptions is: /// <exception cref="SomeException">when things go wrong.</exception> What I don't understand is how to document exceptions thrown by code called by MyMethod1()? Should I document exceptions thrown by MyMethod2() Should I document exceptions thrown by File.Open() ? What would be the best way to document possible exceptions?

  • T-SQL: How to use GROUP BY and getting the value which excesses 60%?

    - by Torben H.
    Hello, sorry for the bad title, I don't know how to describe my problem. I have the following table: | ItemID | Date | ------------------------- | 1 | 01.01.10 | | 1 | 03.01.10 | | 1 | 05.01.10 | | 1 | 06.01.10 | | 1 | 10.01.10 | | 2 | 05.01.10 | | 2 | 10.01.10 | | 2 | 20.01.10 | Now I want to GROUP BY ItemID and for the date I want to get the value, which excesses 60%. What I mean is, that for item 1 I've five rows, so each have a percentage of 20% and for item 2 I've three row, so each have a percentage of 33,33%. So for item 1 I need the 3rd and for item 2 the 2nd value, so that the result looks like that. | ItemID | Date | ------------------------- | 1 | 06.01.10 | | 2 | 10.01.10 | Is there a easy way so get this data? Maybe using OVER? Thank you Torben

  • How can I make this SQL query more efficient? PHP.

    - by Alan Grant
Hi all, I have a system whereby a user can view categories that they've subscribed to individually, and also those that are available in the region they belong in by default. So, the tables are as follows: Categories UsersCategories RegionsCategories I'm querying the db for all the categories within their region, and also all the individual categories that they've subscribed to. My query is as follows: Select * FROM (categories c) LEFT JOIN users_categories uc on uc.category_id = c.id LEFT JOIN regions_categories rc on rc.category_id = c.id WHERE (rc.region_id = ? OR uc.user_id = ?) At least I believe that's the query, I'm creating it using Cake's ORM layer, so the exact one is: $conditions = array( array( "OR" => array ( 'RegionsCategories.region_id' => $region_id, 'UsersCategories.user_id' => $user_id ) )); $this->find('all', $conditions); This turns out to be incredibly slow (sometimes around 20 seconds or so. Each table has around 5,000 rows). Is my design at fault here? How can I retrieve both the users' individual categories and those within their region all in one query without it taking ages? Thanks!

  • What to put in a python module docstring?

    - by 007brendan
Ok, so I've read both PEP 8 and PEP 257, and I've written lots of docstrings for functions and classes, but I'm a little unsure about what should go in a module docstring. I figured, at a minimum, it should document the functions and classes that the module exports, but I've also seen a few modules that list author names, copyright information, etc. Does anyone have an example of how a good python docstring should be structured?
