• Run Windows in Ubuntu with VMware Player

- by Matthew Guay
Are you an enthusiast who loves their Ubuntu Linux experience but still needs to use Windows programs? Here’s how you can get the full Windows experience on Ubuntu with the free VMware Player. Linux has become increasingly consumer friendly, but still, the wide majority of commercial software is only available for Windows and Macs. Dual-booting between Windows and Linux has been a popular option for years, but this is a frustrating solution since you have to reboot into the other operating system each time you want to run a specific application. With virtualization, you’ll never have to make this tradeoff. VMware Player makes it quick and easy to install any edition of Windows in a virtual machine. With VMware’s great integration tools, you can copy and paste between your Linux and Windows programs and even run native Windows applications side-by-side with Linux ones. Getting Started Download the latest version of VMware Player for Linux, and select either the 32-bit or 64-bit version, depending on your system. VMware Player is a free download, but requires registration. Sign in with your VMware account, or create a new one if you don’t already have one. VMware Player is fairly easy to install on Linux, but you will need to start out the installation from the terminal. First, enter the following to make sure the installer is marked as executable, substituting version/build_number for the version number on the end of the file you downloaded. chmod +x ./VMware-Player-version/build_number.bundle Then, enter the following to start the install, again substituting your version number: gksudo bash ./VMware-Player-version/build_number.bundle You may have to enter your administrator password to start the installation, and then the VMware Player graphical installer will open. Choose whether you want to check for product updates and submit usage data to VMware, and then proceed with the install as normal. VMware Player installed in only a few minutes in our tests, and was immediately ready to run, no reboot required. You can now launch it from your Ubuntu menu: click Applications \ System Tools \ VMware Player. You’ll need to accept the license agreement the first time you run it. Welcome to VMware Player! Now you can create new virtual machines and run pre-built ones on your Ubuntu desktop. Install Windows in VMware Player on Ubuntu Now that you’ve got VMware setup, it’s time to put it to work. Click the Create a New Virtual Machine as above to start making a Windows virtual machine. In the dialog that opens, select your installer disk or ISO image file that you want to install Windows from. In this example, we’re select a Windows 7 ISO. VMware will automatically detect the operating system on the disk or image. Click Next to continue. Enter your Windows product key, select the edition of Windows to install, and enter your name and password. You can leave the product key field blank and enter it later. VMware will ask if you want to continue without a product key, so just click Yes to continue. Now enter a name for your virtual machine and select where you want to save it. Note: This will take up at least 15Gb of space on your hard drive during the install, so make sure to save it on a drive with sufficient storage space. You can choose how large you want your virtual hard drive to be; the default is 40Gb, but you can choose a different size if you wish. The entire amount will not be used up on your hard drive initially, but the virtual drive will increase in size up to your maximum as you add files. Additionally, you can choose if you want the virtual disk stored as a single file or as multiple files. You will see the best performance by keeping the virtual disk as one file, but the virtual machine will be more portable if it is broken into smaller files, so choose the option that will work best for your needs. Finally, review your settings, and if everything looks good, click Finish to create the virtual machine. VMware will take over now, and install Windows without any further input using its Easy Install. This is one of VMware’s best features, and is the main reason we find it the easiest desktop virtualization solution to use. Installing VMware Tools VMware Player doesn’t include the VMware Tools by default; instead, it automatically downloads them for the operating system you’re installing. Once you’ve downloaded them, it will use those tools anytime you install that OS. If this is your first Windows virtual machine to install, you may be prompted to download and install them while Windows is installing. Click Download and Install so your Easy Install will finish successfully. VMware will then download and install the tools. You may need to enter your administrative password to complete the install. Other than this, you can leave your Windows install unattended; VMware will get everything installed and running on its own. Our test setup took about 30 minutes, and when it was done we were greeted with the Windows desktop ready to use, complete with drivers and the VMware tools. The only thing missing was the Aero glass feature. VMware Player is supposed to support the Aero glass effects in virtual machines, and although this works every time when we use VMware Player on Windows, we could not get it to work in Linux. Other than that, Windows is fully ready to use. You can copy and paste text, images, or files between Ubuntu and Windows, or simply drag-and-drop files between the two. Unity Mode Using Windows in a window is awkward, and makes your Windows programs feel out of place and hard to use. This is where Unity mode comes in. Click Virtual Machine in VMware’s menu, and select Enter Unity. Your Windows desktop will now disappear, and you’ll see a new Windows menu underneath your Ubuntu menu. This works the same as your Windows Start Menu, and you can open your Windows applications and files directly from it. By default, programs from Windows will have a colored border and a VMware badge in the corner. You can turn this off from the VMware settings pane. Click Virtual Machine in VMware’s menu and select Virtual Machine Settings. Select Unity under the Options tab, and uncheck the Show borders and Show badges boxes if you don’t want them. Unity makes your Windows programs feel at home in Ubuntu. Here we have Word 2010 and IE8 open beside the Ubuntu Help application. Notice that the Windows applications show up in the taskbar on the bottom just like the Linux programs. If you’re using the Compiz graphics effects in Ubuntu, your Windows programs will use them too, including the popular wobbly windows effect. You can switch back to running Windows inside VMware Player’s window by clicking the Exit Unity button in the VMware window. Now, whenever you want to run Windows applications in Linux, you can quickly launch it from VMware Player. Conclusion VMware Player is a great way to run Windows on your Linux computer. It makes it extremely easy to get Windows installed and running, lets you run your Windows programs seamlessly alongside your Linux ones. VMware products work great in our experience, and VMware Player on Linux was no exception. • Why am I getting this "Connection to PulseAudio failed" error?

- by Dave M G
I have a computer that runs Mythbuntu 11.10. It has an external USB Kenwood Digital Audio device. When I open up pavucontrol, I get this message: If I do as the message suggests and run start-pulseaudio-x11, I get this output: $ start-pulseaudio-x11 Connection failure: Connection refused pa_context_connect() failed: Connection refused How do I correct this error? Update: Somewhere during the course of doing the suggested tests in the comments, a new audio device has now become visible in my sound settings. I have not attached or made any new device, so this must be the result of of some setting change. The device I use and know about is the Kenwood Audio device. The "GF108" device will play sound through the Kenwood anyway, but not reliably: Command line output as requested in the comments: $ ls -l ~/.pulse* -rw------- 1 mythbuntu mythbuntu 256 Feb 28 2011 /home/mythbuntu/.pulse-cookie /home/mythbuntu/.pulse: total 200 -rw-r--r-- 1 mythbuntu mythbuntu 8192 Oct 23 01:38 2b98330d36bf53bb85c97fc300000008-card-database.tdb -rw-r--r-- 1 mythbuntu mythbuntu 69 Nov 16 22:51 2b98330d36bf53bb85c97fc300000008-default-sink -rw-r--r-- 1 mythbuntu mythbuntu 68 Nov 16 22:51 2b98330d36bf53bb85c97fc300000008-default-source -rw-r--r-- 1 mythbuntu mythbuntu 49152 Oct 14 12:30 2b98330d36bf53bb85c97fc300000008-device-manager.tdb -rw-r--r-- 1 mythbuntu mythbuntu 61440 Oct 23 01:40 2b98330d36bf53bb85c97fc300000008-device-volumes.tdb lrwxrwxrwx 1 mythbuntu mythbuntu 23 Nov 16 22:50 2b98330d36bf53bb85c97fc300000008-runtime -> /tmp/pulse-EAwvLIQZn7e8 -rw-r--r-- 1 mythbuntu mythbuntu 77824 Nov 1 12:54 2b98330d36bf53bb85c97fc300000008-stream-volumes.tdb And yet more requested command line output: $ ps auxw|grep pulse 1000 2266 0.5 0.2 294184 9152 ? • Problems with mounting .ISO files

- by user89599
I'm using Precise, with GNOME. I've attempted to install some retro, multi-cd games (KOTOR1) via .ISO images and WINE, but I can't get the ISO's to mount correctly. First I tried GMountISO, which showed a read-only warning but worked - until I went to unmount. When the installation program asked for CD 2 I couldn't unmount from the /cdrom folder because neither GMountISO or umount from terminal could detect the mount. After a reboot, I changed to GISOMount (different somehow, I guess?), but when I attempt to mount the ISO I get an error window explaining the syntax of the mount command and, which is also what I get when I attempt to use mount from terminal. After checking /media from terminal on a lark I see the disc mounted there twice over, but umount won't recognize it, even when I specify the full path sudo umount /media/KOTOR_1.iso. It cleared up upon reboot. Can someone please assist? UPDATE :: Thanks for the quick response. What's weird, is the images are like stuck in limbo... I'll show you: sc@sc-HP-110-3700:/media$ ls cdrom KOTOR_1(0)(vcd) KOTOR_1(vcd) sc@sc-HP-110-3700:/media$ cd cdrom sc@sc-HP-110-3700:/media/cdrom$ ls sc@sc-HP-110-3700:/media/cdrom$ cd .. sc@sc-HP-110-3700:/media$ umount KOTOR_1(vcd) bash: syntax error near unexpected token `(' sc@sc-HP-110-3700:/media$ umount KOTOR_1.ISO umount: KOTOR_1.ISO is not mounted (according to mtab) sc@sc-HP-110-3700:/media$ sudo umount -a umount: /run/shm: device is busy. • My sound stopped working today, how can I fix it?

- by Oli
This seems to be a problem with pulseaudio. I was logged in over VNC on my phone and started playing a video this caused X to crash (as sometimes happens). I restarted and suddenly the sound doesn't work. I have a Intel HDA/Realtek ALC889 00:1b.0 Audio device: Intel Corporation 82801JI (ICH10 Family) HD Audio Controller alsamixer is detecting this just fine. PulseAudio doesn't detect this alsa device so is using auto_null as the default sink (logs below). When I properly kill PulseAudio (tell it not to auto-start) direct ALSA communication with the sound card works just fine. speaker-test, for example, works. So the hardware and ALSA layers are fine IMO. In the logs, it seems that the card might be "busy" but I really don't know how or why it would be now (and never before). Is there an ALSA lock file somewhere that it still there because of my crash? I just ran sudo fuser /dev/snd/* and saw this: oli@bert:~$ sudo fuser /dev/snd/* /dev/snd/controlC0: 1884 /dev/snd/pcmC0D0c: 1884m /dev/snd/timer: 1884 A look at the process list (ps aux | grep 1884) tells me process 1884 is arecord -c 1 -f S16_LE -r 8000 -t raw. No idea what this is or why it's running. When I try and kill arecord (as root), it just respawns and rebinds on the hardware. I'm in a very annoying situation where I don't know what is going on and don't know how to find out. I'm open to all suggestions to get this working again. Fire away. And here's what I get when I stop PA auto-loading, kill it and then start it with -vvvv. oli@bert:~$ pulseaudio -vvvvv I: main.c: setrlimit(RLIMIT_NICE, (31, 31)) failed: Operation not permitted I: main.c: setrlimit(RLIMIT_RTPRIO, (9, 9)) failed: Operation not permitted D: core-rtclock.c: Timer slack is set to 50 us. • How to run installation CD for second monitor?

- by dobsoft
I am running ubuntu 14 off of a live USB. I have a second monitor that I would like to use while using ubuntu. It has an installation cd that you have to install before using, and when I click on the .exe file the Archive Manager tries to open it and says an error occurred while loading the archive. Thanks for the help. Edit: additional information It just doesn't show up when when I'm in the display settings area. I press the locate(name is probably something else) monitor button too. I know it needs the CD because when I was using it with Windows it didn't work until I went through the installation process on the CD. If ubuntu doesn't use .exe files is there a way to use the CD still? • Slow boot on Ubuntu 12.04, probable cause the network connection

- by Ravi S Ghosh
I have been having rather slow boot on Ubuntu 12.04. Lately, I tried to figure out the reason and it seems to be the network connection which does not get connected and requires multiple attempts. Here is part of dmesg [ 2.174349] EXT4-fs (sda2): INFO: recovery required on readonly filesystem [ 2.174352] EXT4-fs (sda2): write access will be enabled during recovery [ 2.308172] firewire_core: created device fw0: GUID 384fc00005198d58, S400 [ 2.333457] usb 7-1.2: new low-speed USB device number 3 using uhci_hcd [ 2.465896] EXT4-fs (sda2): recovery complete [ 2.466406] EXT4-fs (sda2): mounted filesystem with ordered data mode. • Bluetooth not working on Acer 3820tg (Ubuntu 12.04)

- by Iohannes
After upgrading to 12.04 (it was done by a complete reinstallation), bluetooth doesn't work anymore. Before (I think it was Ubuntu 11.04), I just followed instructions on this page and copied /lib/firmware/ath3k-2.fw to /lib/firmware/ath3k-1.fw and everything was fine. But in 12.04, there isn't any ath3k-2.fw in the /lib directory, so this method is not possible. Also, pressing Fn+F3 doesn't work. I would appreciate any help. • ATI Radeon 5800 series dual monitor unity not 3D accelerated

- by Victor S
When I had a single monitor setup, without Xinerama, with my current setup of Ubuntu 11.10, ATI 5800 series card, Unity showed transparencies, shadows, etc. (although graphics was reported as 'Standard' in the control/settings panel). Having switched to a dual monitor setup, dell 24" UltraSharp and a smaller Acer monitor, Unity shows only as 2d, even though I'm not loggin in to that display manager. WebGL performance is very sluggish, I'm getting the impression that the processor is doing all the work and the card isn't even accessible even though the drivers are installed (from the ubuntu repository, I did not compile custom drivers). Any tips on how to enable full 3D accelerationn and video card support. • ATI Radeon HD with Catalyst driver stuck mirroring screens

- by Mike Axiak
In 11.10 I replaced my aging Nvidia card with a new Radeon HD 6970 card. The single card has two DVI output ports which I've connected to two monitors. I installed Catalyst version 11.9 and I cannot get multiple monitors set up the way I want. I tried: $ sudo amdcccle and setting the mode to single desktop multiple monitors and whenever I do that Unity crashes and I get back to the login screen. Nothing shows up in the Xorg.*.log files for me to post here. There's only one card so I don't think xinerama would be any help here. Anyone have any ideas? • Ubuntu 13.10. After login, no desktop displayed. Two Nvidia Graphics Cards, Four Monitors

- by jmerkow
I am working on an issue with my Ubuntu 13.10 installation. I am attempting to get 4 monitors up and running but I am having some trouble. So far, I installed and updated to the latest NVIDIA drivers (331.20). Initially X would not start (after installation) so I replaced my xorg.conf with xorg.conf.failsafe. This fixed that problem, but then I tried to enable the other 2 monitors (other video card) and xorg fails to start once again (after I login there is no desktop). I am fairly new to linux but I am not a complete beginner, but I'm not comfortable poking around too much on my own to troubleshoot yet.... lspci -nn | grep VGA: 03:00.0 VGA compatible controller [0300]: NVIDIA Corporation GF110 [GeForce GTX 570 Rev. 2] [10de:1086] (rev a1) 05:00.0 VGA compatible controller [0300]: NVIDIA Corporation GF110 [GeForce GTX 580] [10de:1080] (rev a1) It seems that the nvidia-settings tool does not result in a good xorg.conf file. • How do I set up a virtual network interface with its own IP address?

- by Stefano Palazzo
I vaguely remember that it's possible to set up virtual network interfaces with their own IP addresses, using only one physical network connection. I can find a few guides on the internet that recommend setting these up in /etc/network/interfaces, but Ubuntu doesn't use this file. Therefore my question: What's the correct way of setting these up in recent versions of Ubuntu? As this is a laptop, and I need it to connect to all kinds of different networks, I want to keep the network manager and all its configuration. To be more clear: at the end of this, I want to have a new network interface (e.g. "eth42") with its own IP address, but using whatever is connected in network manager to send the actual packets. In NM, it should appear as if I just had a second ethernet adapter installed in my system.

• The best Windows 7 virtual desktop tool by far… Dexpot

- by Eric Nelson
[Oh – and Windows XP, Vista etc] Every so often I yearn for the virtual desktop functionality that is implemented so well under Linux. Unfortunately every time I start looking for a great tool for Windows I ultimately end up disappointed. But … I think this time around I have actually found one that will outlast the first day or two and become a must have. Check out http://www.dexpot.de/ So far this is 100% stable, 100% sensible and offers awesome functionality, yet still is very simple to use. There is a detailed look at the many features on the site but a couple that do it for me: Desktop Manager and next/previous tray icons make it easy to navigate around: Announcement of Desktop as a desktop takes focus: And best of all, Windows 7 preview integration And… it is FREE for private use and you get 30 days to try it out for professional use (e.g. me)

• How to search for packages that provides a virtual package?

- by netvope
How to search for packages that provides a virtual package? For example, I want to search for packages that provides "x-terminal-emulator" in the "main" repository of Ubuntu 12.04. One way to do this is to parse the package index: curl http://archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/dists/precise/main/binary-amd64/Packages.gz | zcat | grep -B12 '^Provides: x-terminal-emulator' | grep ^Package: which gives me the following results: Package: gnome-terminal Package: konsole Package: xterm Is that a better way to do this? Can it be done with any of the official tools (apt-get/apt-cache/etc)?

• Will making players pay a virtual currency before entering a match discourage them from playing?

- by Bane
I'm making a multiplayer match-making game, and by my current design, people will need to pay a small fee before joining a match. At the end of the match, the team that won will get the money. That will be a virtual currency, but still, will it discourage people to enter matches? I introduced it to make the matches matter more, because there's always a fear that you will loose your investments. I'm not talking about anything big here, but even a small amount might have a similar psychological effect as a bigger one.

• ZFS for Database Log Files

- by user12620111
I've been troubled by drop outs in CPU usage in my application server, characterized by the CPUs suddenly going from close to 90% CPU busy to almost completely CPU idle for a few seconds. Here is an example of a drop out as shown by a snippet of vmstat data taken while the application server is under a heavy workload. # vmstat 1 kthr memory page disk faults cpu r b w swap free re mf pi po fr de sr s3 s4 s5 s6 in sy cs us sy id 1 0 0 130160176 116381952 0 16 0 0 0 0 0 0 0 0 0 207377 117715 203884 70 21 9 12 0 0 130160160 116381936 0 25 0 0 0 0 0 0 0 0 0 200413 117162 197250 70 20 9 11 0 0 130160176 116381920 0 16 0 0 0 0 0 0 1 0 0 203150 119365 200249 72 21 7 8 0 0 130160176 116377808 0 19 0 0 0 0 0 0 0 0 0 169826 96144 165194 56 17 27 0 0 0 130160176 116377800 0 16 0 0 0 0 0 0 0 0 1 10245 9376 9164 2 1 97 0 0 0 130160176 116377792 0 16 0 0 0 0 0 0 0 0 2 15742 12401 14784 4 1 95 0 0 0 130160176 116377776 2 16 0 0 0 0 0 0 1 0 0 19972 17703 19612 6 2 92 14 0 0 130160176 116377696 0 16 0 0 0 0 0 0 0 0 0 202794 116793 199807 71 21 8 9 0 0 130160160 116373584 0 30 0 0 0 0 0 0 18 0 0 203123 117857 198825 69 20 11 This behavior occurred consistently while the application server was processing synthetic transactions: HTTP requests from JMeter running on an external machine. I explored many theories trying to explain the drop outs, including: Unexpected JMeter behavior Network contention Java Garbage Collection Application Server thread pool problems Connection pool problems Database transaction processing Database I/O contention Graphing the CPU %idle led to a breakthrough: Several of the drop outs were 30 seconds apart. With that insight, I went digging through the data again and looking for other outliers that were 30 seconds apart. In the database server statistics, I found spikes in the iostat "asvc_t" (average response time of disk transactions, in milliseconds) for the disk drive that was being used for the database log files. Here is an example: extended device statistics r/s w/s kr/s kw/s wait actv wsvc_t asvc_t %w %b device 0.0 2053.6 0.0 8234.3 0.0 0.2 0.0 0.1 0 24 c3t60080E5...F4F6d0s0 0.0 2162.2 0.0 8652.8 0.0 0.3 0.0 0.1 0 28 c3t60080E5...F4F6d0s0 0.0 1102.5 0.0 10012.8 0.0 4.5 0.0 4.1 0 69 c3t60080E5...F4F6d0s0 0.0 74.0 0.0 7920.6 0.0 10.0 0.0 135.1 0 100 c3t60080E5...F4F6d0s0 0.0 568.7 0.0 6674.0 0.0 6.4 0.0 11.2 0 90 c3t60080E5...F4F6d0s0 0.0 1358.0 0.0 5456.0 0.0 0.6 0.0 0.4 0 55 c3t60080E5...F4F6d0s0 0.0 1314.3 0.0 5285.2 0.0 0.7 0.0 0.5 0 70 c3t60080E5...F4F6d0s0 Here is a little more information about my database configuration: The database and application server were running on two different SPARC servers. Storage for the database was on a storage array connected via 8 gigabit Fibre Channel Data storage and log file were on different physical disk drives Reliable low latency I/O is provided by battery backed NVRAM Highly available: Two Fibre Channel links accessed via MPxIO Two Mirrored cache controllers The log file physical disks were mirrored in the storage device Database log files on a ZFS Filesystem with cutting-edge technologies, such as copy-on-write and end-to-end checksumming Why would I be getting service time spikes in my high-end storage? First, I wanted to verify that the database log disk service time spikes aligned with the application server CPU drop outs, and they did: At first, I guessed that the disk service time spikes might be related to flushing the write through cache on the storage device, but I was unable to validate that theory. After searching the WWW for a while, I decided to try using a separate log device: # zpool add ZFS-db-41 log c3t60080E500017D55C000015C150A9F8A7d0 The ZFS log device is configured in a similar manner as described above: two physical disks mirrored in the storage array. This change to the database storage configuration eliminated the application server CPU drop outs: Here is the zpool configuration: # zpool status ZFS-db-41 pool: ZFS-db-41 state: ONLINE scan: none requested config: NAME STATE ZFS-db-41 ONLINE c3t60080E5...F4F6d0 ONLINE logs c3t60080E5...F8A7d0 ONLINE Now, the I/O spikes look like this: extended device statistics r/s w/s kr/s kw/s wait actv wsvc_t asvc_t %w %b device 0.0 1053.5 0.0 4234.1 0.0 0.8 0.0 0.7 0 75 c3t60080E5...F8A7d0s0 extended device statistics r/s w/s kr/s kw/s wait actv wsvc_t asvc_t %w %b device 0.0 1131.8 0.0 4555.3 0.0 0.8 0.0 0.7 0 76 c3t60080E5...F8A7d0s0 extended device statistics r/s w/s kr/s kw/s wait actv wsvc_t asvc_t %w %b device 0.0 1167.6 0.0 4682.2 0.0 0.7 0.0 0.6 0 74 c3t60080E5...F8A7d0s0 0.0 162.2 0.0 19153.9 0.0 0.7 0.0 4.2 0 12 c3t60080E5...F4F6d0s0 extended device statistics r/s w/s kr/s kw/s wait actv wsvc_t asvc_t %w %b device 0.0 1247.2 0.0 4992.6 0.0 0.7 0.0 0.6 0 71 c3t60080E5...F8A7d0s0 0.0 41.0 0.0 70.0 0.0 0.1 0.0 1.6 0 2 c3t60080E5...F4F6d0s0 extended device statistics r/s w/s kr/s kw/s wait actv wsvc_t asvc_t %w %b device 0.0 1241.3 0.0 4989.3 0.0 0.8 0.0 0.6 0 75 c3t60080E5...F8A7d0s0 extended device statistics r/s w/s kr/s kw/s wait actv wsvc_t asvc_t %w %b device 0.0 1193.2 0.0 4772.9 0.0 0.7 0.0 0.6 0 71 c3t60080E5...F8A7d0s0 We can see the steady flow of 4k writes to the ZIL device from O_SYNC database log file writes. The spikes are from flushing the transaction group. Like almost all problems that I run into, once I thoroughly understand the problem, I find that other people have documented similar experiences. Thanks to all of you who have documented alternative approaches. Saved for another day: now that the problem is obvious, I should try "zfs:zfs_immediate_write_sz" as recommended in the ZFS Evil Tuning Guide.
