  The newest OPN Competency Center (OPN CC) enhancements are now available. This release is focused on a new look and simplified navigation, and Resell Competency Tracking functionality. Some of the key features released include: 1. New Look and Feel with Simplified Navigation Users are now one click away from the most valuable resources. Additionally, there are now focused areas which allow users to navigate more effectively. Users can review their individual achievements, create a dedicated Training Plan to broaden their knowledge, or use the new Company Corner to view their company’s achievements. Your view as an Oracle employee has been modified and the Company Corner will provide links to allow access to Partner Workgroups and other links specific to your partner data. 2. Resell Competency Tracker This new functionality has been created to allow partners to track their progress toward becoming Resell Authorized. The Resell Competency Tracker highlights those Knowledge Zones where additional requirements must be achieved prior to Distribution Rights being granted and allows the partners to track their progress. This tracker is available to all users badged to a company ID and also to Internal Oracle employees who have existing access to Partner Workgroups. 3.   I recently wrote about the Life Insurance Conference held in Washington, DC last month. This week I was both an attendee and guest speaker the 13th Annual Future of Life Assurance Conference held at The Guoman Tower in London, UK. It's amazing that these two conferences were held on opposition sides of the Atlantic Ocean and addressed many of the same session topics and themes. Insurance is certainly a global industry! This year's conference was attended by many of the leading carriers and CEOs in the UK and across Europe.The sessions included a strong lineup of keynote speakers and panel discussions from carriers such as Legal & General, Skandia, Aviva, Standard Life, Friends Provident, LV=, Zurich UK, Barclays and Scottish Life. Sessions topics addressed a variety of business and regulatory issues including: Ensuring a profitable future Key priorities in regulation The future of advice The impact of the RDR on distribution Bancassurance Gaining control of the customer relationship Revitalizing product offerings In addition, Oracle speakers (Glenn Lottering and myself) led specific sessions on gearing up for Solvency II and speeding product development through adaptive rules-based systems. • Triangulation A* (TA*) pathfinding algorithm

  I need help understanding the Triangle A* (TA*) algorithm that is described by Demyen in his paper Efficient Triangulation-Based Pathfinding, on pages 76-81. He describes how to adapt the regular A* algorithm for triangulation, to search for other possibly more optimal paths, even after the final node is reached/expanded. Regular A* stops when the final node is expanded, but this is not always the best path when used in a triangulated graph. This is exactly the problem I'm having. The problem is illustrated on page 78, Figure 5.4: I understand how to calculate the g and h values presented in the paper (page 80). And I think the search stop condition is: if (currentNode.fCost > shortestDistanceFound) { // stop break; } where currentNode is the search node popped from the open list (priority queue), which has the lowest f-score. shortestDistanceFound is the actual distance of the shortest path found so far. But how do I exclude the previously found paths from future searches? Because if I do the search again, it will obviously find the same path. Do I reset the closed list? I need to modify something, but I don't know what it is I need to change. The paper lacks pseudocode, so that would be helpful.

• Ubuntu: The Movie

  Since Ubuntu is the most popular distribution and has made a lot of changes in many places around the globe and in different industries up to the point where even people that do not know what Linux is, they know what Ubuntu is (go figure? ) there might be a movie coming someday (like the social network for Facebook or Revolution OS for Linux/Red Hat) i wanted to know how it all came to be from the actual players in the show. UBUNTU: The Movie Since i have seen several of the primary characters of the movie here, this might be a good place to start on how it all came to be. Not in the traditional wikipedia way or the ubuntu help section, but in the what the actual developers have in mind on how it all went down to the point of having a huge amount of users, an incredible level sophistication in the forum, help sections, installers, etc.. This is just to have the KNOW HOW before the actual movie makes it out some day in the future. As a fan of Ubuntu this is a MOST KNOW! ;) Hope i made some people happy and some other shy hehe.

• Securing ClickOnce hosted with Amazon S3 Storage

  Well, since my post on hosting ClickOnce with Amazon S3 Storage, I've received quite a few emails asking how to secure the deployment. At the time of this post I regret to say that there is no way to secure your ClickOnce deployment hosted with Amazon S3. The S3 storage is secured by ACL meaning that a username and password will have to be provided before access. The Amazon CloudFront, which sits on top of S3, allows you to apply security settings to your CloudFront distribution by Applying an encryption to the URL. Restricting by IP. The problem with the CloudFront is that the encryption of the URL is mandatory. ClickOnce does not provide a way to pass the "Amazon Public Key" to the CloudFront URL (you probably can if you start editing the XML and HTML files ClickOnce generate but that defeats the porpose of ClickOnce all together). What would be nice is if Amazon can allow users to restrict by IP addresses or IP Blocks. I'd sent them an email and received a response that this is something they are looking into...I won't hold my breadth though. Alternative I suggest you look at Rack Space Cloud hosting http://www.rackspacecloud.com they have very competitive pricing and recently started hosting Windows Virtual Servers. What you can do is rent a virtual server, setup IIS to host your ClickOnce applications. You can then use IIS security setting to restrict what IP/Blocks can access your ClickOnce payloads. Note: You don't really need Windows Server to host ClickOnce. Any web server can do. If you are familiar with Linux you can run that VM with rackspace for half the price of Windows.   I tried to install minidlna on my machine but it appeared to me that it's not in repositories anymore. Well then I decided to compile it myself. After downloading version 1.1.3 I tried to compile but I needed libav headers which I couldn't install via apt - no idea why there has been a lot of broken packages: $ sudo apt-get install libavcodec-dev Reading package lists... Done Building dependency tree Reading state information... Done Some packages could not be installed. This may mean that you have requested an impossible situation or if you are using the unstable distribution that some required packages have not yet been created or been moved out of Incoming. The following information may help to resolve the situation: The following packages have unmet dependencies: libavcodec-dev : Depends: libavutil-dev (= 6:9.13-0ubuntu0.14.04.1) but it is not going to be installed E: Unable to correct problems, you have held broken packages. • Disable the Old Adobe Flash Plugin in Google Chrome

  If you’ve just updated to the Dev or Beta release of Google Chrome, you might have noticed that a special version of Adobe Flash is now integrated into the default distribution of Chrome. But what about your old plug-in? As it turns out, the old plug-in is generally still installed… but you can easily disable Chrome plug-ins in the latest version, so let’s get to work. Disable the Extra Flash Plug-in Head over to about:plugins and look through the list—you should notice two Shockwave Flash plugins. The first one should be in your Google Chrome installation folder, and has the filename gcswf32.dll. This is the NEW one, so don’t disable it! If you keep scrollling down, you’ll see the old one, with the file name NPSWF32.dll. This is the OLD plugin, and you can safely disable it. Of course, if you only use Chrome you could just completely uninstall Adobe Flash from your system by heading into Control Panel’s Uninstall Programs screen, and then finding and uninstalling Adobe Flash Player Plugin. The ActiveX version is for Internet Explorer. We’ve not done any testing to see if the old Flash plugin is even still active or not, but may as well disable it just to be sure, right?   Many years ago I wrote article SQL SERVER – Get a List of Fixed Hard Drive and Free Space on Server where I demonstrated using undocumented Stored Procedure to find the drive letter in local system and available free space. I received question in email from reader asking if there any way he can list directory structure within the T-SQL. When I inquired more he suggested that he needs this because he wanted set up backup of the data in certain structure. Well, there is one undocumented stored procedure exists which can do the same. However, please be vary to use any undocumented procedures. xp_dirtree 'C:\Windows' Execution of the above stored procedure will give following result. If you prefer you can insert the data in the temptable and use the same for further use. Here is the quick script which will insert the data into the temptable and retrieve from the same. • How to Create a New Signature in Outlook 2013

  If you sign your emails the same way most of the time, you can create signatures in Outlook that you can attach to your emails. Easily create a signature for business emails and a different one for personal emails. To create a new signature, open Outlook and click the File tab. Click Options in the menu list on the left side of the Account Information screen. On the Outlook Options dialog box, click Mail in the list of options on the left side of the dialog box. On the Mail screen, click Signatures in the Compose messages section. Click New under the Select signature to edit box on the Signatures and Stationery dialog box. A dialog box displays asking for a name for this signature. Enter a descriptive name in the edit box and click OK. You are returned to the Signatures and Stationery dialog box and the name you entered displays in the Select signature to edit box. If it’s the only signature, it will be automatically selected. Enter the text for your signature in the Edit signature box. Select the text and apply font, size, and other character and paragraph formatting as desired. Click OK to accept your changes and close the dialog box. Click OK on the Outlook Options dialog box to close it. Now, when you create a new email message, the default signature is added to the body of your email automatically. If you only have one signature set up, that will be the default signature. • How do I stop XNA/Visual Studio from rebuilding my content project every time I build?

  My group and I are working on a game in XNA 4.0 with Visual Studio 2010/2012. The main solution has 6 projects: 2 XNA game projects (1 executable/ 1 class library), 1 WPF executable for the level editor, 2 standard class libraries, and a content project. Originally, the editor and engine XNA game projects had a content reference to separate content projects. Recently, I consolidated the content projects into one to simplify asset additions. Since pushing these changes to our git repo, certain members of my group have been experiencing weird build issues. Every time they run the project, they have to re-build all of the assets. This happens regardless of whether any changes were made, even if they just run the project directly after building. I've taken a few steps to figure out why this is happening. Below is the MSBuild output set on Normal verbosity. • Trouble installing Rabbit VCS for nautilus

  I am using Ubuntu 11.10 and following instructions mentioned here to install Rabbit VCS. I added the PPA properly, did a sudo apt-get update and ran sudo apt-get install rabbitvcs-core rabbitvcs-nautilus rabbitvcs-thunar rabbitvcs-gedit rabbitvcs-cli There were dependency issues and I googled a bit and found out that I need to install RabbitVCS only for nautilus as that is the default file manager for Ubuntu. So I ran the install commands separately for rabbitvcs-core, rabbitvcs-gedit and rabbitvcs-cli. Now my understanding is that those are installed properly. However when I run the install command for rabbitvcs-nautilus, I still get a dependency issue. ranhiru@ranhiru-HP-HDX16-NoteBook-PC:~$ sudo apt-get install rabbitvcs-nautilus Reading package lists... Does anyone know of a step-by-step? Right now any attempt outside these result in the error message: google tasks list Did you specify the service correctly?   Oracle is pleased to announce that Bastian Fischer, vice president and general manager for EMEA, Oracle Utilities, will participate in the 2010 Organisation for Economic Co-Operation and Development (OECD) Urban Roundtable for Mayors and Ministers on 25 May in France. The roundtable, hosted by OECD Secretary General Angel Gurría, will help determine how cities can contribute to green growth incentives and address the challenges to success. The OECD is developing a global Green Growth Strategy that will identify policies and approaches that can shift production and consumption towards a clean, low-carbon and sustainable economy. Already, more than 500 European cities have signed up to the 2020 carbon pledge to reduce carbon emissions by 20 per cent in ten years. • Oracle ADF at Oracle OpenWorld 2012

  This year is going to be very busy for Oracle ADF developers who'll attend Oracle Open World. • Lexmark X5650 doesn't print (scanning works)

  I want to use a Lexmark X5650 under Ubuntu. When I connect it via USB, Ubuntu recognizes the device, but can't find a driver. On the Lexmark support site, you can select "Unix/Linux" and then "Ubuntu 9.04", "9.10", "10.04" and "10.10". However, all versions lead to the same driver: lexmark-08z-series-driver-1.0-1.i386.deb.sh.tar.gz (Last updated: 2012-04-13). While installing this driver, the installer asks me to connect the device. As soon as I connect it via USB, Ubuntu now adds the printer automatically. So after the installation completed, I had 2 printers set up. But I can't print anything (I tried it with both printer configurations). Scanning works fine, though. So I guess the driver installation and the device connection are successful. When I try to print something, the print job is listed in the printing queue, but nothing happens. After some time, I get an error message which starts a debug wizard, but in the end it reads something like "Sorry, couldn't find the reason". I had several different error messages (unfortunately, I didn't record them), one was approximately like "printer cannot communicate with computer". Another said that my color ink was low (which is true, but black is full). Another said there was an input/output error. I tried it with Ubuntu 11.10. Because I read that some people had success with 10.04., I installed it in QEMU and installed the driver there, too. Same problem, though. I'd like to upgrade to 12.04, if it should work there for any reason, but I read that for some people this printer stopped working in 12.04 :/ So, it would be best if the printer would work in 12.04. If that's not possible, I'd be fine with starting a QEMU virtual machine with any GNU/Linux distribution that works with my printer.
