  • Does lshw list the "factory" speed of a memory module or the effective speed and how to find the former?

    I hope I phrased this correctly. lshw gives: description: DIMM Synchronous 400 MHz (2.5 ns) product: M378B5773CH0-CH9 vendor: Samsung physical id: 0 slot: DIMM0 size: 2GiB width: 64 bits clock: 400MHz (2.5ns) And indeed the memory speed is set is set to 800MHz in the BIOS, which I think makes sense since it is a double rate. On the other hand, Googling strongly suggests that to this product number corresponds the PC3-10600 type, which is 1333MHz, not 800MHz. And this seems to be confirmed in the BIOS, where if I select Auto for memory bus speed, 1333MHz is selected "based on SPD settings". However in the latter case, the computer does not boot, i.e. the kernel panics, complaining that something attempted to kill the Idle process. So, I am I am beginning to suspect that I have been given defective memory, the technician that installed saw this, and lowered the bus speed. Is this a possibility?

  • Is paravirtualization evil?

    I have an VMWare ESX Server v3.5 with a few virtualized Debian Lenny VMs (kernel 2.6.22 with vmi) running Apache Tomcat 5.5. I enabled paravirtualization, and Disk IO increased from about 240MB/s to 380MB/s, making me a happy admin. The problem now is that my apache tomcat becomes deadlocked during startup, running with 200% CPU (I have 2 CPUS assigned to the VM), and don't know how to get both: A stable system and a fast system. I somewhere heared that paravirtualization is legacy anyway and won't be available on newer ESX servers. Is there a replacement for this seemingly performance-improving option, or is it discontinued becauses it is just unstable? What is the state of paravirtualization? Should I ignore it completely?   • Unable to access internet if wireless enabled

    The following is my route output. eth0 is my wired network and eth1 is my wireless network. Only wired one has access to internet. If I enable wireless, I am not able to access internet, it tries to access via eth1 and I get 404 page of the wireless router. Why does eth1 have higher preference though default is eth0 (link)?   • Kill xserver from command line (init 3/5 does not work)

    I'm running Linux Mint 10, although I've had this same issue with other variants of Linux. I've been told/found while researching that if the X server hangs or otherwise errors, one can drop to a root prompt, usually at another tty, and execute init 3 (to drop to single user mode) and then init 5 to return to the default, graphical session. Needless to say, I've tried this before in multiple configurations on multiple machines to no avail. The only feedback I receive form executing those two commands is a listing of VMWare services (from a kernel module) that are stopped and then restarted. Note: If I run startx (either before or after init 3), then I am told that the xserver is still running and that I should remove /tmp/.X0-lock. Having tried that, it removes that error message, but claims that the xserver cannot be attached as another instance is running. How do I kill the xserver completely? Can I killall some process name?

  • slow disk writes between host and guest

    I've got a ubuntu (server kernel) on a amd x4, 4gb ram, 2x seagate sata 1 tb disks for testing virtual machines and the write performance is very slow. The two disks are in a software raid1 array, one small boot ext3 partition, 10gb system partition and the rest is a xfs partition (about 980) gb for data (virtual machines). If I'm copying files from the virtual machine to the host with rsync or scp the copy frequently stalls or goes at about 1mb/s. What's wrong? I've tried disabling barriers on xfs, increased logbufs, allocsize, but it seems nothing helps. The strange thing is that await (for example during copying) for sda is usually under 100, while for sdb is around 400. Any ideas on what could be wrong / what could I do to improve this setup?

  • Entire filesystem restore from rdiff-backup snapshot

    I'm trying to make a complete system restore from an rdiff-backup. The cli for backing was: rdiff-backup --exclude-special-files --exclude /tmp --exclude /mnt --exclude /proc --exclude /sys / /mnt/backup/ebox/ I created a new partition mounted the partition at /mnt/gentoo and did: rdiff-backup -r /mnt/vol2 /mnt/gentoo However when I try to chroot to this system (following gentoo's manual, which means mounting /dev/ and /proc) I get the following error: chroot: failed to run command/bin/bash': No such file or directory` All this takes place on a Parallels (virtual machine) Debian installation. Any ideas on how to proceed in order to fully restore the system? Best Regards ps. /mnt/gentoo/bin/bash works fine if I execute it. All files and permissions are in place rdiff-backup seems to work just fine. However the system cannot neither boot (exits with kernel panic - cannot find init) or be chrooted.

    I am new to xen and I am trying to get a domU running but I am having problems with it. I think my network card might not support bridging which is bizarre.   • HAProxy being killed with more that 54,000 connections

    I am trying to run HAProxy (1.4.8) on a EC2 machine running Ubuntu 10.04. I need HAProxy to be able to handle many thousands of long-running persistent connections (websockets). With the current setup HAProxy gets killed at around 54,300 connections (roughly). If I am running HAProxy in the foreground, the only output is "Killed". Am I right in thinking this is the Kernel killing the process? Is this because it is out of resources? Can I increase the resources? The CPU and memory consumption are low with 50,000 connections, so I don't suspect either of these. How can I prevent this from happening?
