• How can I set a network connection as metered?

  I would like to set a network connection as metered. I can't find how to do this; it seems to have changed in the upgrade from Windows 8 to 8.1. I tried following the steps in the official metered connection FAQ. However, when I open the connection, there is no Data Usage heading nor a Set as a metered connection option. I tried this on two different computers, both running Windows 8.1. I also tried doing this for both wireless and ethernet adaptors. Here's what the connection screen looks like. I've cropped the empty space from the image. How can I set the connection to metered?

• Touchpad not working after connecting hdmi cable

  I had installed Ubuntu 14.04 2 weeks back on my new laptop along side Windows 8. 1. And it was working fine. But yesterday after I connected Ubuntu with my TV using the HDMI cable, the cursor/ pointer stopped working. The pointer is not visible and my touchpad is not working. I connected the hdmi cable with youtube in Firefox. But only the wallpaper was visible on the TV. Also the right click menu, alt tab window, etc was also visible. But the side menu and the Firefox window was not visible. The pointer was visible on the tv and the touchpad was working, I was able to move the pointer. After I removed the HDMI cable, my cursor/pointer disappeared and my touchpad is not responding! ! I tried to restart many times, but still no luck. Its still not visible in the desktop. The pointer is visible in the login screen, but is not responding to the touchpad. I tried to login to my KDE session, there too the pointer is visible but is not responding to the touchpad. It is not moving.

• Can't access computer

  I'm running Ubuntu 14.04 on an Intel NUC and it won't boot! The last successful boot was earlier today but now each time I try it gets stuck on the Grub menu where it prompts for memory check etc. This is not a dual boot system, so this screen shouldn't ever appear, and it never has before. It's GRUB version 2.02~beta2-9, which is a little disconcerting, as I'm on the stable sources. Unfortunately the keyboard (I've tried 2 keyboards just in case) is not responding at this point in the boot process, so I can't select the "Ubuntu" menu option in Grub. The keyboard works during the bios stage, so I can configure it to boot from USB, and I tried a flash drive with 14.04 on it. The flash drive works in my laptop but is completely ignored by the NUC (I tried all 3 USB ports!). It seems that I have no way of getting into the machine at all! The Intel support site was my first option, but the site is down. I expect it's a long shot, but if anyone has any ideas I'd be very grateful.

• What to do about "system running in low-graphics mode"?

  My Dell which was 5 years old suddenly karked it and I had the "low graphics" black screen and useless dialogue box. As I believed it was a dead graphics card I went out and bought a brand new machine. I put aside the new machine and tried again in vain to open the Dell. I eventually got to the command line via Ctrl+Alt+F1. I logged into my account from there, and simply started a series of sudo apt-get remove of various softwares that I knew were installed on my PC (software without any great consequence like Google earth, tweak, Skype etc). Lo and behold after a sudo reboot my computer was fine again! So now I have 2 computers. BUT one week after buying the other one and installing 12.04 because I love Ubuntu, the SAME PROBLEM arrived! I once again deleted Google earth, Skype, and did a sudo reboot and everything worked as before. I think there is a bug or something in 12.04 as this problem has never arisen with any other versions of Ubuntu.

  TrueCrypt - "Warning! Password locked: Fixed disk0" error message on boot. When i start my laptop (Acer TravelMate 2410). after the starting memory check, the screen goes full black, and a message appears for about 3 seconds: Warning! Password locked: Fixed disk0 and after that, disappears, and next message comes out: Operating System Not Found and all stops here. Windows Xp was installed on it, before this came. TrueCrypt cd (witch was made during the process of full encryption) is not working, not in restoring MBR, no even in decrypting my drive - completely useless. Note: I detected some short of boot sector errors (i dont know the amount) on my drive before this happened. Please, i would greatfully thank every comment, or suggestion, because my computer is unusable now. The HDD is a Samsung HDD, 160Gb. Other preferences: Acer TravelMate 2410 Notebook, 2 Gb RAM, 1500 Mhz Intel Celeron M processor. Regards

• Default Window Size and Positions

  I'm running Vista Home Premium 32-Bit, though I doubt that matters, in this case. So, how do you set the default windows size/positions? Is there a registry tweak for this? Going to Tools->Folder Options...->View Apply to Folders or Reset Folders doesn't work. So, whenever I open a new window to a random new folder I haven't opened before, I don't want it to take 75% of the screen. Is there any way I could make it open smaller? (So it opens correctly the first time.)

• Windows 7 stopped booting

  I have a laptop which after shutdown it stopped booting. I tried repair, safe mode, and even start with Windows 7 Installation. The screen just goes blank with a mouse pointer that I can move around. I removed the harddrive from the laptop and connected it to my desktop using an External HD casing. The computer recognizes the disk, but it seems like it can't read it. If I go to My Computer it shows up, but it doesn't display usage information. When I double click on the drive it sits there as if it was loading something and eventually shows "G:\ is not accessible. The parameter is incorrect." Disk Management and Diskpart also take forever to load and when it does it shows the drive. My question, do you think this is a hardware problem or some corrupted sector? How can I try to fix the drive without formatting it? Thanks...

• Will buy simple Cocos2D bubbles iPad game for private use (source)

  Hi, First of all, sorry if this is the wrong place for posting this kind of request. IDK if is there already a marketplace on the stack community. I'm a fairly experienced iPhone/iPad developer with several Apps already published. I have a deep understanding of Objective-C and the Cocoa framework, as well as with the iPhone development tools. However, I have never used Cocos2d (or any other gaming engine for that matter) as I've mostly specialized in utilities/productivity Apps. I am in the urgent need of developing a really simple iPad game (for which I will provide all of the media assets - graphics and sounds) that needs to be deployed in about a week from now. Basically the game should allow the user to pop bubbles of different size and speed as they move from the bottom to the top of the screen. While I could take the time to read the documentation and start working on this game myself, I'm currently with a couple of other projects that I need to finish soon, so I would like to ask for the help of some other more experienced Cocos2D developer which could develop this game on its basic form for me. If you think you can help, please send me your quote, timing and, if possible, samples of previous work done with Cocos2D that would be similar to what I need. I can provide more detail upon request.   I have a long text on powerpoint slide. Instead of separating it on multiple slides, I made an animation that moves it up using animation path, so that text hidden at bottom appears while text on top goes off screen. However, I need more move animations to reaveal more text (the text takes more than 2 screens). This means, I need two (or more) animation paths (of the same length) and I want them to move obejct from position, where the last path has left it.   Problem Starting Outlook shows only the splash screen with comment “loading profile”. I could cancel the startup but restarting shows the same. I verified with Task Manager that no hidden outlook process is bother me. Solution Scanpst Normally with Outlook the tool “Microsoft Outlook Inbox Repair Tool” (scanpst.exe) is additionally installed. Some people could access it via Startmenu, but not me. My lovely Launchy found it under "C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft Office\Office14\SCANPST.EXE" Scanpst first ask you for the pst file which you would like to scan. I started with the first default offer: C:\Users\…\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Outlook\….ost And this brings up the information, that another application uses this file. Handle To investigate the causer Handle from Sysinternals is your friend in such cases. Start it from an administrative console and pipe the output to a file. handle > c:\temp\handle.txt Now you could open this file with the editor of your choose and search for the blocked file (your pst file). On top of the section you see the application which has a handle to this file opened (SfdcMsO1.exe). Task Manager Kill this application and start Outlook again. And voila – everything starts up fine … by me

• Smoothwall: How to stop live network traffic displayed in terminal?

  For our network we are working on building a new firewall box and we just installed Smoothwall on it to test it out. When I start up the box, before the login prompt even appears, all of the live IP traffic is appearing in the terminal (source/destination IPs, MACs, Ports, etc). I wait for the boot sequence to finish, but all I see is this IP traffic. The login prompt never comes up. I finally get sick of waiting and press CTRL + C and it says "Entering Run Level 3" and then I get a login prompt finally. Once I login, the IP traffic continues to fly through the terminal even as I'm trying to type commands. How do I turn this stuff off? Is this the default setting for Smoothwall to have all this IP traffic going by on the screen? It essentially renders using the terminal to being useless.

• how do I fix 12.04 which has crashed after the latest update

  I added a new drive to my system because the old one was full and stopped. I installed 12.04 at the same time, onto the new drive using a flash disk while off line. The system performs fine on 12.04 from the flash disk and it booted from the new drive OK and I was able to recover all my old data. The updater suggested that I update, so I went ahead and did so. At the end of which it wanted to reboot. I went ahead but on reboot I get to the log in prompt and then the whole system crashes. It tries to recover and then performs a bug report during which it tells me that a whole bunch of files are out of date (these would be the new ones I just updated!) and the screen goes black. Game over. I've tried to reboot several times ... same result. I can boot off the flash drive OK. How do I restore the system I had before the update, without over writing all my hard earned recovered data? Or how do I identify the "new updates" that are causing me grief?

  im facing a problem. after installing Ubuntu 12.04 LTS using boot from CD, when reboot there is no boot option to choose the OS. i directly log in to my Windows 7. before this im having an issue with the 'nomodeset' if not mistaken. after tick [x] on the nomodeset, i can install my Ubuntu, and stuck again at choosing the partition. so i had done 2 partitions for ubuntu, 1 partition for ubuntu ( ext3, mount /) and the other 1 for swap. then i can proceed until finished the installation. and after the system want to reboot. it take some times and just stuck at the screen doing nothing. not rebooting at all. i force to shutdown then restart again then directly go into windows 7 without boot option. in win7 the partitions for ubuntu is gone. i had tried the boot-repair thing and still doesn't help. it just show up the _ (terminal thing i guess). i typed boot repair and still the same. im using acer aspire 4736z. please anybody help me with this issue.

  Is anyone else seeing this problem? A solution would be great (hey, it's Windows, it's gonna blue screen, just gotta deal with it), but it's also nice to know if it's something specific to my configuration, or if a lot of folks are having the same issue. Here's the details: * MacBook Pro 15" unibody, 4 GB, 2.4 GHz, 10.5.8 * Fusion 3.0.1 * Windows 7 Pro, 32-bit (clean install, not migrated from Boot Camp or anything) Blue screens happen nearly every time the MBP cover is closed for a short period of time (< 3 minutes). If the cover is closed for a half hour or longer, the VM is fine. I'm guessing it might be related to sleep, but that's hard to tell, and the Windows crash dump logs are pretty useless. Thanks!

• Mouse selects everything on its own

  I have a strange problem that my mouse keeps selecting everything I point to. For example, if I open Rhythmbox, then at the top of the screen there is a text which says which song is playing. If I move my mouse over this text, then it will select this text; but I am not clicking. This behaviour does not happen in all programs. For example in Firefox I have no problem at all. Maybe it is Gtk related? Nautilus also behaves strangely; I cannot open files by clicking on them, I have to select and make a box around the file and then press enter to open it. If I click, then nothing happens. Similar problems also happen with other Gtk software. I think the problem might be related to touchscreen issues (I have a touchscreen). I run Gnome 3 on Ubuntu 12.04. I have a HP touchsmart 610 desktop computer. Any help is greatly appreciated. UPDATE: I just did a fresh reinstall, and I am 90% certain that it is related to the touchscreen drivers. Here is what happens when I reinstall. At first boot, so exactly after install, everything works fine, except the touchscreen: The touchscreen does not respond. I update ubuntu, because I installed from an old CD (CD with ub. 12.04). Then on next reboot I have touchscreen working , but the working touchscreen comes together with the mouse selecting everything on its own. SECOND QUESTION: Would anybody know how I could figure out what those touchscreen drivers are (so that I can disable them) ?

• Operating system not found after downloading skin pack

  My brother has downloaded a executable file from Skin Pack — I believe it was the Mountain Lion IO6 skin pack. He's using an Acer Aspire 553G. And now his operating system won't start (Windows 7). It gets to the BIOS and then goes to load up the OS but the screen goes blank and it just goes back to the BIOS over and over again. He decided to play with the bootup settings and tried different options and got the error message "Operating System not found." Does anyone have any idea how to solve this?

• Used mountmanager now Ubuntu hangs on boot

  I was using MountManager in Ubuntu 12.04 to set user permissions in mounting hard drives. I set each partititon to be mountable by everyone instead of admin only. Then I clicked Apply in the file menu and it gave me the message successfully updated. Upon restarting Ubuntu, just hangs on the splash screen and does not boot any further. Windows still boots fine. • after upgrade from 10.04 to 12.04 cannot boot with linux 3.2.0-24-generic-pae

  After upgrade from 10.04 to 12.04, I cannot boot with linux 3.2.0-24-generic-pae: process gets frozen in a xubuntu initialization screen (I had qimo installed). If I try the recovery mode (with the same Linux version), booting freezes after this message: Begin: Mounting root file system. If in grub menu I choose Previous Linux versions, I can boot using Linux 2.6.32-41-generic-pae. But once logged in, some things don't seem to work (apt-get update fails, update manager fails, HID menu does not provide suggestions...) (to be honest, I have no idea whether this is part of the bigger issue) Reading in Ask Ubuntu through apparently similar problems, I decided to follow some advices: got boot-repair and run it. The problem remains & I got this report. I also run as root in terminal $ sudo update-initramfs -u and this is what I got: update-initramfs: Generating /boot/initrd.img-3.2.0-24-generic-pae cryptsetup: WARNING: failed to detect canonical device of /dev/sda1 cryptsetup: WARNING: could not determine root device from /etc/fstab /tmp/mkinitramfs_EIDlHy/scripts/classmate-bottom/45xconfig: 9: .: Can't open /scripts/casper-functions What else?   In my .bash_profile, executed for both my interactive and non-interactive logins are BASH_ENV=$HOME/.myinteractivestuff export BASH_ENV doing this for bash on Linux works fine, but on Solaris is not sourced: bash --version GNU bash, version 3.00.16(1)-release (sparc-sun-solaris2.10) Curiously, if I invoke screen within my login shell, BASH_ENV is then read. Are any restrictions on when $BASH_ENV is respected on Solaris? In my case I'm logging in with ssh using putty, but also tried unix to unix ssh, and telnet and see the same. Note that I know that my BASH_ENV variable assignment is being executed since I can echo this variable after login without any trouble (ie: ruling out the obvious possibility that my .bash_profile is also not being read).

• Dual displays not working - NVidia - Ubuntu 12.4

  Graphics Card: NVidia 460 GTX. Driver: NVIDIA accelerated graphics driver (version current) I have one DVI monitor, an old Dell LCD from 2005, and one VGA monitor, an Asus ML238H from 2010 whose HDMI port broke. The Asus is plugged into my graphics card's primary monitor slot and is the better monitor even though it is VGA but my computer defaults to the Dell. This happens when I boot as well; the loading screens, the motherboard brand image, etc. are all displayed on the Dell monitor until Windows loads. Then both monitors work. The same thing happened when I booted up Ubuntu 12.4 but I did not see the second monitor when the log-in screen popped up, nor did I when I logged in. I went to System Settings/Displays and my Asus monitor is not an option. I clicked Detect Displays and the Asus is not detected. I looked at the other questions regarding NVIDIA drivers and recalled my problems with Ubuntu a few years ago and decided to check the driver. I went to Additional Drivers to install the proprietary driver and it looks like it's installed and active but I'm still having this problem. There is another driver option, the post-release NVIDIA driver, but that does not fix the problem either. Also, under System Details/Graphics the graphics device is listed as Unknown, which might indicate that it is using an open source generic driver and not the proprietary NVidia driver. But under Additional Drivers it says that I am using the NVidia driver. Any help is appreciated.

  Good day, Thanks Bruno for the prompt response. First sorry for my bad writing. I'll try to clarify my problem. Now my system already update to version 13.10. The problem is my system always put on stop whenever there is no activity. Example: I open terminal then execute "sudo apt-get update" then I leave my laptop away, the update stop at 20%. After I move my mouse then the update continue. When I watch a movie using vlc. Play the movie and change to full screen. After a while like 30-40 seconds the movie pause, and again after I move my mouse or hit any button on my keyboard the movie continue to play. I downloading torrent file, a big file, I leave my laptop the whole night, the next morning the downloading just stop. the problem my laptop cannot be on idle. means when I downloading a file or updating my system I just cannot leave my laptop away. I have to kept my laptop busy like surfing the internet...playing games etc.

• Bringing Google Docs to the Desktop

  Is there a stable way of accessing Google Docs (application) from my desktop without having to use a browser on Windows? On my accepted answer... While I did stipulate that I wanted to not use my browser, I didn't really mean I wanted to avoid browser technology. I meant I didn't want to open my browser, type in the web address for google docs, etc. TheTXI's answer required me to download/install nothing more than what I already had (Chrome) to acheive this. It created a desktop icon (similar to an application) that launches me right into my docs (similar to an application), without extra browser-items on the screen. This was an excellent suggestion, and won by virtue of parsimony.

• Motherboard with embedded hdmi problems with Windows 8 Consumer Preview (64bit)

  I'm specifically referring to GIGABYTE GA-E7AUM-DS2H LGA 775 NVIDIA GeForce 9400 HDMI Micro ATX with a Core 2 Duo chip. This computer is connected to a Sharp Aquous TV using HDMI. It all worked fine with Windows 7 64 bit. In Device Manager I see GeForce 9400 and have installed the latest NVidia drivers (295.73 WHQL). However, when I click on the change the screen resolution to 1920x1080, I see that Windows 8 thinks that it's using some other graphics card with Microsoft Basic Display Driver. This was made clear, when I tried to launch the NVidia tools and it claimed that the current monitor (in this case my TV) wasn't attached to the GeForce 9400 card. In Device Manager, there's a "Coprocessor" and "Unknown device" without drivers, but I've no idea what they are. I've run the original CD that the motherboard came with no success. Any ideas?

  Well I got my Windows Vista .iso file , I put it on my USB Drive , Extracted , Then I restarted and went to "Boot Device Options" Clicked "Generic USB" (What I labeled when I formatted) Then it stood on a black screen for 15 minutes , Then just went to Ubuntu , Now I found out exactly what happened Why Windows WONT work on Ubuntu is a simple reason Not if you save it in NFTS Format or MSDOS (Both Windows Formats) , Not if you use anything special , This even applies to the Ubuntu downloader , One specific reason that I just noticed , Since WINE (Windows Application Loader) can't run while you click the USB , You can't open the Setup.exe file needed to install the Operating System , That means you can not install it at all if it is a .exe installer file , Then what can we do? Only other way is to make a partition with GParted , Put a partition , then install WINE , Then run your Windows Setup.exe file , Then Wine will load it up! Why not to open Setup.exe before you make a partition - Simple , It WONT WORK! I have tried , It says you need __ Amount of space and can be put on any partition , Yeah , Any partition NOT BEING USED Here is where I need your help! - I want to make a partition but they all show as locked when I open GParted , So How am I supposed to open them up? Get a hammer and tell HP my laptop didn't want to open its partitions?
