  • SATA HDD stuttering on reads (LED on)

    I hope I can get some new ideas to solve the issue. What I have: AMD Phenom II X4 905e Box, Sockel AM3 Gigabyte GA-MA790XTA-UD4, AMD 790X, AM3 ATX WD Caviar GreenPower 1,5TB SATA II 4GB Kit OCZ DDR3 PC3-10666 Platinum Low-Voltage CL7 HIS HD 4670 iSilence4 DDR3 1024MB Native HDMI Dual-DVI, PCI-Express Behavior: Everything works normally excepting the HDD accesses. The drive seems to get stuck in reading data (LED drive by Mainboard is on for a while) then recovers and goes on. There is a delay of more than 30s sometimes. Often it is a matter of 5-10s. This does not seem related to the workload of the disk. What I tried so far: Use different SATA port: I switched from the SATA3 to SATA2 then the SATA driven by the CPU, no difference. Turned AHCI off, drove the SATA in IDE mode, same behavior, now I felt like the HDD has problems Deactivated energy saving settings (BeQuiet, ...), disabled 3 CPUs (msconfig) supposing some race condition or trouble with changing freqs, same trouble With Windows7 Professional 64Bit, I installed the hotfix http://support.microsoft.com/?scid=kb%3Ben-us%3B976418&x=8&y=9 with no success. The problem description matches what I experienced, so I felt lucky but was quite in a sad mood after being deceived. Burned the DLG 5.04f DataLifeGuard CD from WD to check the drive. All tests passed, to my surprise! Installed an Ubuntu on the same drive i386 flavour. Drive still in IDE mode, exactly the same behavior. So the OS does not matter. What I did not try yet: http://www.gigabyte.eu/Support/Motherboard/BIOS_Model.aspx?ProductID=3263 I have a F2 BIOS and there is a F3a Beta, did someone have similar issues that were solved by this update? It is a beta so I fear upgrading a bit and I could find no release notes at all on the net, not really serious work maybe they had issues translating from Chinese??? Using another HDD drive Does someone have other hints or a similar issue? Maybe it is neither the HDD nor the Mainboard/BIOS?

So, I have to use Microsoft Install Clean Up to uninstall Microsoft Office. When I tried to install it back, I received this message: Microsoft Office 2007 encountered an error during setup. Error 1402. Setup cannot open the registry key. {a bunch of long keys}. Verify that you have sufficient permissions to access the registry or contact Microsoft Product Support Service for assistance. For information about how to contact PSS, see {a *chm file}. After that, I tried to run the setup as admin but I ended up woth the same error. So, what should I do to solve this problem?

  • How to edit CSV file without changing or formatting values (ideally in Neo/Open-Office)?

    I often need to edit CSV files that will later be imported into databases. I need to reorder columns, change values, delete lines, etc. I use NeoOffice for this now - it's basically Open Office with some Mac UI stuff tweaked. Often, though NeoOffice tries to be "helpful" and reformats fields it thinks are dates, rounds numbers to some number of decimals, etc. This breaks the file import and/or changes important data values. How can I prevent this from happening? I need to edit the fields exactly as they would appear in a text editor, with absolutely no changes to the data in the fields.

  • Broken fonts in Konsole KDE 4.3.4

    I have a strange situation - after some upgrades a couple of days ago fonts in KDE Konsole broke. To make it more specific - standard fonts look more or less OK, but when I use my national characters (like acelnsózz) they all look broken - like from another font, or badly scaled. The same problem doesn't exist in GNOME Terminal. I usually use the Terminus font, so I used this for demonstration, but it shows in other fonts as well - if that will be necessary I will provide list. So, say I have foo.txt and bar.txt in C:\Windows\Documents and Settings\Nathaniel. I want symlinks of those files to automatically be made in /home/nathaniel/ (while I'm running Linux, of course).

  • Firefox in popup window (no address search bar) ctrl-k navigates to google

    In firefox hitting Ctrl+K takes you to the search bar (all fine and good). However in my webmail client (Zimbra) it pops open windows without the address/search bar. Hitting Ctrl+K there (muscle memory from Outlook Web Access) navigates immediately to google.com - hitting back doesn't work from there (Zimbra's all screwed). Is there anyway to disable Ctrl+K navigating to the search provider without changing the normal Ctrl+K to the search-bar behaviour when the search-bar is present? Or better yet force it to actually pop up the search-bar - or highlight in my main browser window's search bar?

    Is it possible to set up a PC so it can Wake on Lan and then have the option of which OS to boot into? I want to have a secondary PC with Windows and a *nix variant installed. I want the PC to be in a remote room so I can connect via a wireless hub to it and then boot it up as and when required and choose which OS to boot into. If it is possible how would I go about it? Any recommendations on how to do it or where I can get more info on how to do it? Thanks.. Ian

  • Windows 7: How to place SuperFetch cache on an SSD?

    I'm thinking of adding a solid state drive (SSD) to my existing Windows 7 installation. I know I can (and should) move my paging file to the SSD: Should the pagefile be placed on SSDs? Yes. Most pagefile operations are small random reads or larger sequential writes, both of which are types of operations that SSDs handle well. In looking at telemetry data from thousands of traces and focusing on pagefile reads and writes, we find that Pagefile.sys reads outnumber pagefile.sys writes by about 40 to 1, Pagefile.sys read sizes are typically quite small, with 67% less than or equal to 4 KB, and 88% less than 16 KB. Pagefile.sys writes are relatively large, with 62% greater than or equal to 128 KB and 45% being exactly 1 MB in size. In fact, given typical pagefile reference patterns and the favorable performance characteristics SSDs have on those patterns, there are few files better than the pagefile to place on an SSD. What I don't know is if I even can put a SuperFetch cache (i.e. ReadyBoost cache) on the solid state drive. I want to get the benefit of Windows being able to cache gigabytes of frequently accessed data on a relativly small (e.g. 30GB) solid state drive. This is exactly what SuperFetch+ReadyBoost (or SuperFetch+ReadyDrive) was designed for. Will Windows offer (or let) me place a ReadyBoost cache on a solid state flash drive connected via SATA? A problem with the ReadyBoost cache over the ReadyDrive cache is that the ReadyBoost cache does not survive between reboots. The cache is encrypted with a per-session key, making its existing contents unusable during boot and SuperFetch pre-fetching during login. Update One I know that Windows Vista limited you to only one ReadyBoost.sfcache file (I do not know if Windows 7 removed that limitation): Q: Can use use multiple devices for EMDs? A: Nope. We've limited Vista to one ReadyBoost per machine Q: Why just one device? A: Time and quality. Since this is the first revision of the feature, we decided to focus on making the single device exceptional, without the difficulties of managing multiple caches. We like the idea, though, and it's under consideration for future versions. I also know that the 4GB limit on the cache file was a limitation of the FAT filesystem used on most USB sticks - an SSD drive would be formatted with NTFS: Q: What's the largest amount of flash that I can use for ReadyBoost? A: You can use up to 4GB of flash for ReadyBoost (which turns out to be 8GB of cache w/ the compression) Q: Why can't I use more than 4GB of flash? A: The FAT32 filesystem limits our ReadyBoost.sfcache file to 4GB Can a ReadyBoost cache on an NTFS volume be larger than 4GB? Update Two The ReadyBoost cache is encrypted with a per-boot session key. This means that the cache has to be re-built after each boot, and cannot be used to help speed boot times, or latency from login to usable. Windows ReadyDrive technology takes advantage of non-volatile (NV) memory (i.e. flash) that is incorporated with some hybrid hard drives. This flash cache can be used to help Windows boot, or resume from hibernate faster. Will Windows 7 use an internal SSD drive as a ReadyBoost/*ReadyDrive*/SuperFetch cache? Is it possible to make Windows store a SuperFetch cache (i.e. ReadyBoost) on a non-removable SSD?   • Displays tabs in Firefox 3.6 across multiple rows?

    Hello, After upgrading to Firefox 3.6, I noticed that there no longer seems to be a way to have tabs all displayed in several rows when there are too many to fit in the window: http://www.ghacks.net/wp-content/uploads/2008/08/firefox_tabs_multiple_rows-500x179.jpg I find it very inconvenient to have to click on the down arrow at the far-right side to go through the list of open tabs. The TabMixPlus add-on is incompatible with ReloadEvery 3.6.2, so that's not a good solution either. Does someone know if it's possible to either configure FireFox 3.6 to go back to the previous way of displaying multiple tabs, or if there's an add-on that's compatible with ReloadEvery that would do the trick?   • Why does Windows 7 always automatically change the input or keyboard language?

    I am wondering why Windows 7 always automatically changes my input or keyboard language. I've a notebook with an integrated QWERTY keyboard English (United States). Traveling, I use that one but, additionally, I've my own as well as a much better keyboard at home which is a QWERTZ keyboard German (Germany). Thus, being at home, I'd like to use my QWERTZ keyboard. Unfortunately, Windows 7 does not play along at this one. Every time, I start up my notebook, it is usually set to English (United States) but that's not the problem. In case, I'd use my notebook QWERTY keyboard English (United States), that's fine. However, if I start up my notebook and I'd like to use my QWERTZ keyboard German (Germany), I usually press ALT + Left Shift in order to switch from English (United States) to German (Germany) and Windows 7 switches the input language but only for the program that is currently open. If my input language is set to German (Germany) and I, e.g., open NotePad, Windows 7 automatically switches my input language to English (United States). This is very annoying since I've to change the input or keyboard language to German (Germany) every time I open up a new program. Why doesn't Windows 7 stay with one input language if I changed it manually by pressing ALT + Left Shift? Why doesn't the manual change of the input or keyboard language apply for the whole Windows 7? Why does it only affect the currently opened program? Since I've two keyboards with two different layouts, I seriously need to have both of the keyboards languages installed. I tried both of the below settings in order to find a solution for my problem.   • Mutt seems to sync to Gmail IMAP only on quit

    I am using Mutt 1.5.20 in Mac OS X Terminal. I have a Google mail account whose mail I fetch via IMAP. I also use a Gmail notifier app to notify me of new e-mail messages. My experience with Mutt dates no later than 1 week. The trouble is this: When my Gmail notifier tells me about a new e-mail, I hit the Terminal to open Mutt. I can read the message and Mutt will mark it as read. However, Google's servers are not told that the message is read until Mutt is closed. Thus, my Gmail notifier continues to show a misleading unread count. How can I force Mutt to synchronize with IMAP without having to quit every time I finish reading my e-mail? Preferably the sync will occur instantaneously, but a periodic sync would be satisfactory as well.

I made local printers accessible over the RDP. I installed the xp drivers for the Brother printer. So my question is, " Is there a way that I can print from my win7 machine remotely connected to a xp sp3 system"? Or is there no way that I can put the correct drivers on the xp machine to have it redirect to my laptop(win7)

    Hi there, i have a really annoying behavior on my Windows XP System. Any PopUp Windows (e.g. asking me for my network signin) automatically steal the focus and i end up typing half of my last line of code into the username-field of the message box. Since i have no chance to prevent the message boxes themselve, i really would like to prevent the focus change! I searched the web and here too, but the only valid answers use TweakUI and some registry entries. None of them work. I guess, its because they prevent focus stealing from another application and not from within the active application itself. Anyone out there who knows a solution to this? Thanks anyway ;) Flo

  • over Windows terminal change cursor width or color in Vim depending on mode

    I am using PuTTY to connect over SSH to an Ubuntu server from my Windows 7 workstation. Once connected I am using the Vim installation from the Ubuntu server to edit files. I want the cursor to change when I go into and out of insert mode. Part of my .vimrc file is like this but it is not changing the cursor: if &term =~ "xterm" echo "xTerm!!inate!" let &t_SI = "\<Esc>]12;purple\x7" let &t_EI = "\<Esc>]12;blue\x7" endif I know that the if statement is executing because of the echo. EDIT: Actually I would prefer to change the cursor to be a vertical line like you can in the PuTTY settings rather than change the color, or maybe even do both. But just changing the color would be a lot better than nothing. Also I am willing to change terminals if there is another Windows 7 Professionsal 64 bit compatible terminal that can do this (preferably something free). Maybe Poderosa can do this?

  • Make isolinux 4.0.3 chainload itself in VMWare

    I have a bootable iso which boots into isolinux 4.0.3 and I want to make it chainload itself (my actual goal is to chainload isolinux.bin v4.0.1-debian, which should start up the Ubuntu10.10 Live CD, but for now I just want to make it chainload itself). I can't get isolinux to chainload any isolinux.bin, no matter what version. It either freezes or shows a "checksum error" message. I'm using VMWare to test the iso. Things I have tried: .com32 /boot/isolinux/chain.c32 /boot/isolinux/isolinux-debug.bin (chainload self) this shows Loading the boot file... Booting... ISOLINUX 4.03 2010-10-22 Copyright (C) 1994-2010 H. Peter Anvin et al isolinux: Starting up, DL = 9F isolinux: Loaded spec packet OK, drive = 9F isolinux: Main image LBA = 53F00100 ...and the machine freezes.     Trying to install MySQL via Homebrew. The install seems to work fine but i get an error: "Error: The linking step did not complete successfully The formula built, but is not symlinked into /usr/local You can try again using `brew link mysql'" Naturally, after this I ran: brew link mysql Which spat out: Error: Could not symlink file: /usr/local/Cellar/mysql/5.5.20/include/typelib.h /usr/local/include is not writable. You should change its permissions. So I ran it with sudo and got a "cowardly refusing to brew link mysql".
