  • text options for seo-minded web developer

    I've been asked by a client if i could jazz up their tagline on their website i'm developing/designing. I've thought about the options and want to stay as SEO minded as i can but i'm struggling to think of a way i could strike a balance between having a really smart, anti-aliased looking heading at the top of their site under the logo but have it searchable/crawlable by the big G (google). Sifr? Cufon? Images? What do people recommend in terms of SEO and visual niceties?

  • Looking for a lean WYSIWYG inline editor for CMS projects that includes an image upload feature?

    Hey guys, I am looking to find a lean WYSIWYG inline editor. The main required feature is image uploading. A simple way to upload an image to the server and use it in the content being editted. I have come across a whole bunch of editors but nothing I liked so far. I am looking for something open source and free. So far I have checked out TinyMCE which is free.. untill you need image uploading capabilities. Ckeditor looks great.. uses jquery.. but requires you to have your own server side script to upload images. They barely give any documentation on how to do this. There were a few others, but the bottom line was that I cant find anything that is simple with out of the box image uploading capabilities. Thanks for any advice you may give!

  • Checkbox vs Two Radio Buttons - Which one is more usable?

    I'm currently working on some setting screens, most of which contain a 2 column form with a preference question on the left, and a form element on the right. The questions are things like: Can add/edit other users? Can delete clients? Obviously this setting is a binary setting and most UI "experts" would insist that a checkbox is the appropriate form element to use. However, when I mocked up the form with the checkboxes it looked unfriendly and it seemed hard to relate the state of the checkbox back to the question. I changed the form to use two radio buttons instead: Yes o No Personally I find this easier to process, as the options are actually answers to the question posed on the left. In terms of clicking it makes no difference to the user, it's a single click each time to change the setting. What do you think of this use of radio buttons? Is this better or worse than a checkbox and why?

I'm getting a little exhausted using numerous IDE's for development (VS, XCode, Eclipse/Netbeans, and TextMate) and am looking for a replacement I can use on all the different machines I interact with. What are some of the pros of Vim/Emacs for things like Languages supported Syntax highlighting (for things such as c, objc-c, c#, java, python, haskell, html, javascript, xml etc...) Code completion Code folding Working with a directory of files (like have a solution/project opened) Possible debugger support What are some of the main things you like about (Emacs/Vim, and please no flames only what you really like) Thanks =) *(yes.. I have scoured the net reading this vs that etc. but I'd like more of a 'why you love it' vs 'this is better than that because...')

    Is there still an injection risk when using prepared statements and mysqli_stmt_bind_param? For example: $malicious_input = 'bob"; drop table users'; mysqli_stmt_bind_param($stmt, 's', $malicious_input); Behind the scenes does mysqli_stmt_bind_param pass this query string to mysql: SET @username = "bob"; drop table users"; Or does it perform the SET command through the API, or use some type of protection to keep this from happening?

  • Trying to write up a C daemon, but don't know enough C to continue

    Okay, so I want this daemon to run in the background with little to no interaction. I plan to have it work with Apache, lighttpd, etc to send the session & request information to allow C to generate a website from an object DB, saving will have to be an option so, you can start the daemon with an existing DB but will not save to it unless you login to the admin area and enable, and restart the daemon. Summary of the daemon: Load a database from file. Have a function to restart the daemon. Allow Apache, lighttpd, etc to get necessary data about the request and session. A varible to allow the database to be saved to the file, otherwise it will only be stored in ram. If it is set to save back to the file, then only have neccessary data in ram. Use sql-light for the database file. Build a webpage from some template files. $(myVar) for getting variables. ( php is quite fast, but the fact that making a few mySQL requests for every webpage is quite unefficent and I'm sure that it can be far better, so an object that we can recall data from in C would have to be faster ) P.S I am using Arch-Linux not MS-Windows, with the package group base-devel for the common developer tools such as make and makepgk.     I have a url, the data of which page i need as a json object. I ve tried xmlhttprequest and ajaxobject both but doesnt work.   • slideDown() Makes Everything in Wrapper Shift

    Hello everyone, I am currently creating a simple menu where there are several names of services and a user can click on one and jQuery will show it's corresponding paragraph describing it below it. My jQuery code is fine and does exactly what I want, however, I have one bug I have yet to iron out. Whenever I click one of these headings and it's description displays, everything in the wrapper for the page shifts to the left about 7 pixels in Firefox, it does the same thing is Google Chrome however I have not measured the amout but I am sure it is irrelevant. Anyways, I am using the slideToggle() command to show the hidden parragraph. I assume this is occuring because when the slideDown occurs it is somehow changing the width of everything and the "margin: 0 auto;" setting for the wrapper rule in my css is compensating for this change. Does anyone have any way I can remedy this problem? I have tried several other fixes I've found around the internet but to no avail. I do understand that it is not possible to completely stop users from printing. But atleast disable the context menu or just the print option and the copy option.   • Browser Side Photo Editing Library

    Hi! Currently I'm searching for a free solution to simple edit some photos at the users browser. Resizing and Cropping would be mandatory. I'm not searching for an online service (for example SUMO or PIXLR which are great), because I want to include the software into a WYSIWYG Editor. JavaScript would be really nice, but it would have to work in IE 8. Pixastic is a great example, but works only in modern browsers (not IE 8 :-/) Any suggestions what I could use? Maybe setting up some kind of image processing service with ImageMagick and communicating with it through AJAX could also be an solution? Has anyone gained some experience with such a solution?

  • Get wrong PATH_INFO after rewriting in lighttpd

    In my lighttpd config file, I have a rewrite rule like this: $HTTP["host"] == "sub.example.com" { url.rewrite = ( "^/(.*)" => "/sub/$1" ) } So when a user visits http://sub.example.com, she's actually visiting http://example.com/sub. The problem is that the PATH_INFO seems wrong, URL: http://sub.example.com/extra PATH_INFO: expected: /extra what I get: /sub/extra Now whenever I call request.get_path(), it returns something like http://sub.example.com/sub/extra, which is not what I want. Of course, I can just override the get_path method of the request class, but I wonder if there is a simpler way like changing the lighttpd config?

  • In Sinatra, best way to serve iPhone layout vs. normal layout?

    I'm writing a Sinatra app which needs to render different layouts based on whether the user is using an iPhone or a regular browser. I can detect the browser type using Rack-Mobile-Detect but I'm not sure of the best way to tell Sinatra which layout to use. Also, I have a feeling that how I choose to do this may also break page caching. Is that true?   • require_owner code to limit controller actions not recognizing current user as owner

    I am trying to restrict access to certain actions using a before_filter which seems easy enough. Somehow the ApplicationController is not recognizing that the current_user is the owner of the user edit action. When I take the filter off the controller correctly routes the current_user to their edit view information. Here is the code.   • Using AJAX to display error message Ruby on Rails

    I have built a blog using Ruby on Rails. New to both. I am implementing AJAX pretty effectively until I get to the error handling portion. I allow for comments on posts and do this by rendering a comment partial and remote form in the /views/posts/show.html.erb page. Upon successful save of a comment the show page is updated using views/comments/create.js.rjs and displays a flash notice. I am simply trying to flash a notice when it doesn't save. Searched around and worked this a bit on my own. Can't get it to fly.     I need to map to create controller what must response to two urls: "http://localhost/api/controller?id=1" (where only id value can change) "http://localhost/api/controller/anotherId/someconst" (where anotherId is the only one changing part) i map it to such route: routes.MapHttpRoute("Test", "api/{controller}/{id}/{someconst}", new { controller = "Test", someconst = RouteParameter.Optional }); And have to methods in my controller: public void Get(int id) { ... } public void Get(int anotherId, string someconst ) { ... } It works...But it doesn't look nice...cause "string someconst" is not a param, it's just a const part of url. But if i remove "string someconst" param second url wouldn't work. Is it possible to map one controller to two routes to resolve this urls to make it clear without fake param which is a const in fact?
