• Is it possible to make customizable WPF styles?

  I really like WPF because of its awesome skinning support by changing resourcedictionaries on the fly, but the catch is, the styles must be made by designers in XAML. My client needs a skinnable UI where the end users can make skins themselves. My question is - In Photoshop, you can take any image, and add a color overlay to change all the colors to that hue. Can you do something similar in WPF? I'm just a beginner, and looking at several WPF styles, it seems like all the color values are hard-coded. Here's a sample scenario - user selects two colors from color pickers, and all the controls have a gradient background from Color1 to Color2.

• Reputable geo-ip location Services

  Who are some of the reputable and/or stable geo-ip location service providers? I'm specing out an application that needs this functionality, and whenever I google geo-ip I get a ton of hits, but it's hard to tell who the legit providers are and who the fly-by-night folks are. Ideally I'd like something that can run without a call to an external API (i.e. regular database updates), but would be interested in hearing about experience with providers who offer live/http services. If it ran in PHP that would be great, but so long as it could run in a *nix environment that's fine. I'd prefer a paid service from a reputable provider than an awesome free service that could vanish tomorrow (free services are welcome, just convince me they're not going to vanish).

• Best XPath tools

  What tools are you guys using for XPath and why? Right now I'm using SketchPath because its totally awesome, but its a windows app that needs to be installed WhiteBeam online XPath test bedbecause you can test expressions from the website SketchPath seems to stand out the most to me because it actually helps you create the xpath and it is very advanced. If you haven't tried it you should. Cons to SketchPath: you have to install it on the machine, otherwise it is fantastic. Cons to WhiteBeam: you have to upload your file which I don't always want to do for security reasons and the file size you can upload has some limit on it, and uploading a file is annoying anyways. Also I think there might be some subtle differences between the xpath used for that tool and when running a .NET app. But don't remember any right now. Just keep it in mind.

• CSS Frameworks like 960 and Blueprint?

  This is at the framework level, not dealing directly with CSS, so posting to SO. I just learned about the existence of CSS frameworks. 960 Grid System seems pretty awesome, then I found Blueprint, which seems to do the same thing and more. Is there a better word than "framework" to categorize this? Are there any other products in this category? In response to one of the comments http://stackoverflow.com/questions/1483565/link-to-a-site-designed-using-a-css-framework-blueprint-960-etc, "how many example frameworks do you want? he just listed two of them.", I'd love to have more than two examples, unless those are the only two in the running. Blueprint, which is "the original CSS framework" 960 Grid System, which is a tool to have a grid underlying your screen. YUI 2: Grids, similar to 960? The rest of YUI is more similar to JQuery?

• BSD Sockets don't behave in a iPhone 3G environment

  I noticed that many times while developing for an iPhone 3G, BSD socket functions will simply fail. I also noticed at the time, the 3G antenna wasn't even ON, nor was there WIFI Access to back up the network call (So it seems ridiculous that it doesn't turn on to support the network request).. This information was verified with an app from Apple in the SDK called Connectivity Test, or something of the sort. Basically if you load Safari or something, then quickly load up the App it would be fine.. Of course that's not ideal. Apparently, to apple, gethostbyname() or something of the sort is by no means a reason to turn on the Antenna. I contacted Apple about this, and they said that the BSD functions do not switch the Antenna on, but calling all of the Objective-C CFNetwork functions do. I want portable code, so is there a way to keep my existing BSD setup? I really dislike coding in Objective-C, so if anyone knows a work around, that would be awesome.

• Discussions on software architecture - Is StackOverflow appropriate place?

  Hi guys, I am using StackOverFlow for sometime, and its absolutely absolutely awesome for discussions on coding issues. But I don't see discussions on software architecture and designs. What I mean is, I don't see discussions where people put their design ideas and architecture of their software for discussions and ask for reviews and comments. So my question is, is StackOverFlow not the place for such discussions and is there any other place specialized for such discussions. (Like http://serverfault.com for system administrators or http://superuser.com). I am asking this question because, I am a beginner and am coding a piece of software for a course project and am too enthusiastic about it (and passionate too) and want to release it as OpenSource. And I want the code to be highly modular and highly extensible. But as a beginner I am not sure if the design I have comeup is good or not. So want to discuss it with people. • PHP eval issue with PHP + HTML code

  Hi, I've got PHP and HTML code stored in a database table. When I get this data, I need to echo the HTML and process the PHP. I thought I could use eval() for this, which works, if I do this eval("echo 'dlsj'; ? EVALED "); I get dlsjEVALED printed out. The problem is, I get a fatal error when I run longer scripts. Things like: Parse error: syntax error, unexpected '<' in /home/content.php(18) : eval()'d code on line 1 Any advice = awesome. Thanks.

• Intellij + GWT 2: Development Mode ignores changes to static content

  The new Development Mode in GWT 2 is awesome, but unfortunately as launched from Intellij IDEA 9, it does not seem to notice changes made to static files such as html, css, etc. It immediately see changes in *.java files, but not the static ones. If I make a change in a static file I need to quite the Development Mode tool and re-launch it. This is painfully slow, and negates much of the point of using dev mode in the first place I assume this is some artifact resulting from the way the Intellij runner launches it- it creates an out/artifacts/project_war_exploded directory with the static content and class files. How can I get Intellij Dev Mode tool to follow changes made to the original static source files?

• Embedding Facebook Connect In A Facebook Page

  Our site allows users to register using Facebook Connect. We also have a Facebook page. We'd like to include the "Connect with Facebook" button in our page so a user could instantly connect (aka register) and then be forwarded on to their account on our site. I was hoping to use the Static FBML page application and the FBML iFrame tag to simply embed the button but it looks like the iFrame tag isn't allowed in Facebook pages. Facebook Connect uses JavaScript so I'm wondering if there is some kind of trick I could use like popping up a page in a new window that would automatically display the connect dialog box. Any ideas on how I would include a Facebook Connect button on our Facebook page would awesome! Thanks in advance for your help.

  Few weeks ago I tried Intellij and I found it really awesome. Now, at my project there's two programmers (including me) using Intellij and few other programmers gonna still be using Eclipse. Since this project is already very large and it gonna be growing a lot, we need to use compatible Code Style and Code Formatting between Intellij and Eclipse. We do not want to have problems when one user edit one file and reformat it before save. With Eclipse "alone" we used to have some exported configuration, and before anybody starts to work, the first step is just to import this configuration. We already tried to use External Code Formatter, but it didn't work on Intellij 9. So, I have a bunch of questions here: 1 - Is there any way to import eclipse formatting configuration on Intellij 9? 2 - Anybody could share their experience managing this kind of situation? Do you guys have any other suggestion to manage this situation?

• Setting borders around tbody, thead and tfoot with IE8

  Hi, I've designed a table in html that uses tbody, tfoot and thead. I would like to put a border-bottom and border-top on my tbody. Which works perfectly well with Firefox and Google Chrome. However Internet Explorer 8 does not display the borders at all. After searching on the internet I haven't found any solution that did not involve some javascript; which I am not keen on using for that task. Has anyone faced this problem before and came up with a solution that does not require javascript? Ideally I wouldn't want to start messing around with the html too much, a solution just with css would be awesome. Thanks for that.

  Like many web developers I'm looking forward to streaming video that utilizes the new HTML 5 <video> tag. Browser support definitely isn't wide enough yet, so using a Flash/SWF fallback is a must. This got me thinking: in Flash it's possible to highly customize the playback controls (pause, play, stop, seek, volume, etc.) in HTML 5?. What options are there for customizing the glyphs, icons and colors of video controls? Is Javascript required?   Is there a way getting all countries, states,cities zipcodes/ in one single database. I have been looking all over. I discovered geonames.org, which has I guess all of the content. But there is no way to fetch that data directly. I am using rails. If there any helpers or Plugins, it'd be great. It would be awesome if there is a complete resource in any parsable format which I can use to get this database in place. • iPad Orientation Paradigm

  I'm not a super awesome designer so this new paradigm has me a little cranky. The iPad is not supposed to have a standard orientation, and should/shall display screen contents at whichever orientation the user decides. This has me sort of stumped. I can keep my UI designed the way I want it in landscape mode, but switching to portrait, I just can't determine the best way to present app content. I know it's all speculation at this point, but what are the chances we can override the autoRotateToOrientation to only include the orientation of our choice? Apple ignored the HIG on a lot of issues for iPhone, including splash screens, saving state, etc. I know we can't really argue with Apple, but doesn't it sound slightly ridiculous to reject an app because it won't rotate to portrait? I've come a long way porting some code to iPad and it works great in landscape mode. I guess only time will tell. What do you all think?

• Using listpreference and getting the key works but no ok button...

  I'm using listpreference in my android app and getting my key values and all is well and works good (now that you guys have helped me) BUT - when my listpreference menus popup, they only contain a cancel button. Let's say the user is choosing between red, blue, and green. When the listpreference dialog first pops-up, the dialog only shows a cancel button. Because of that, the dialog disappears as soon as the user selects their choice. I would like it so that when the user chooses their setting, they see the radio button get highlighted and then they go ahead and click the ok button...but I don't have an ok button and can't figure out why. Any help would be awesome...al

• C# Sequence Diagramm Reverse Engineering Tool?

  It's essential for me to find a tool that will reverse engineer sequence diagrams by integrating with the debugger. I suppose using the profiler could work also but less desirable. It's a key requirement that the tool in question will record all threads of execution since the app, TickZoom, is heavily parallelized. We just evaluated a most awesome tool from Sparx called Enterprise Architect which integrates with the debugger. It allows you to set a break point, start recording method traces from that break point. It's a lovely design and GUI. Hope it works for you but it only records a single thread of execution so that makes it unusable for us. I will put in a feature request to Sparx. But hope to find a similar tool that does this now since that's the only features we need--not all the other stuff that Sparx also does rather well. Sincerely, Wayne

• How do I specify the com+ server when registering a vb6 com+ application without using clireg?

  I've found lots of documentation on how to install com+ components with WiX or an exported msi from dcomcnfg but the problem with these approaches is I can't see where to specify the com+ server. Currently we register the components with clireg and the -s switch which allows us to specify the com+ server like so: clireg32.exe BLEH.VBR -s COMSERVER -t BLEH.TLB -d This is messy to say the least and I've been trying to get this into some automated form of installation that doesn't involve calling a batch file full of clireg32 calls. Currently WiX is the backbone of our packaging automation so a solution with WiX would be awesome. Thanks.

  You're working freelance with several small remote clients and you want to have a meeting via webcam. What do you use? Please consider price, video quality, and minimum hassle for the clients. I'd prefer my clients don't have to pay anything or install anything for it to work. I'm already serving VNC in a Java applet, so something like that would be nice. Skype is awesome, and oovoo looks great, but I'd like to have more than one client on the line at once without them having to pay a subscription too. • Where are config files for class libraries physically located?

  My guess is that this question will fall under the category of "duh", but, nevertheless, I'm confused. When using config files in, for example, a Windows Forms Application, the config file can be found in C:\Program files\CompanyName\ProductName\Application.exe.config. However, with the class library I'm developing I do not see a "ClassLibrary.dll.config" file in the install folder after installing it (in tandem with another project) from Visual Studio. Even though I do not see the file anywhere, retrieving data from it works correctly. Plus, running the following code from a method within the class library returns the path you would expect: C:\Program files\CompanyName\ProductName\ClassLibrary.dll.config.   Hello, I have looked for months now, for JavaScript-based HTML editor I can embed onto my web pages to replace a TEXTAREA, but to enable me to edit CODE in a friendly, closer to a real editor, way. All editors I've tried (RadEditor from Telerik, FCKEditor, TinyMCE, etc etc), do not trap the TAB key, very useful when editing HTML code onto a page, to help format the code properly.   I have a Java\Spring\Hibernate application - complete with domain classes which are basically Hibernate POJOs There is a piece of functionality that I think can be written well in Grails. I wish to reuse the domain classes that I have created in the main Java app What is the best way to do so ?
