  • Explorer.EXE ordinal 423 not found in urlmon.dll after updates/IE8 install

    Setting up a brand new Dell Optiplex 980 with Windows XP SP3, and everything started up fine on the first boot. My first task was to install system updates, including IE8 and WGA. After the required reboot after installing updates, I now get this error message: Explorer.EXE Ordinal not found. The ordinal 423 could not be located in the dynamic link library urlmon.dll Per my cursory Google search, this forum thread places the blame squarely on IE8. The solution provided is to enter safe mode and remove IE8. Unfortunately, when I press F8 to choose to boot safe mode, I only have the option of "Windows XP SP3 Professional" and no safe mode options. Any other ideas? Thanks in advance. FYI, I can get to the Windows Task Manager by holding down Control-Alt-Delete, but programs don't seem to run properly if you select them. I tried chatting with Dell Support, and we tried to initiate the system restore at c:\windows\system32\restore\rstrui.exe, but that had a similar "ordinal 423 not found in urlmon.dll" error.

  • Failing Windows Updates with Error Code 800719e4

    On a number of Vista machines I have now come across the same error - when installing updates everything works fine, until it after it reboots and the rolls back during step 3. On all occasions (where a simple retry hasn't worked) the error code has been 800719e4. On my own laptop I have so far tried the following:- Installed the updates one by one manually - I started on the smallest and one by one have worked towards the largest one which has left me with "Security Update for Windows (KB2286198)" that refuses to install. Renamed all the files in "C:\Windows\Logs\CBS" to "xxx.old" where xxx was the original name with windows update turned off - no change Renamed all the folders in "C:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution" in the same manner - no change Attempted to install it manually "Windows6.0-KB2286198-x86.msu" - no change Tried to un-install IE8 - doesn't work, rolls back at the end (Installing the IE9 Beta when it launched was what alerted me to the issue on this laptop) Ran a "Fix It" thing from the Microsoft Website - no help (Can't find the link now). Tried to recover from the disk - but alas my laptop only has a recovery partition (and was unservice packed original). Ran with nothing running on startup, and only MS services - again no change. Google is being useless with a load of posts trying to get me to call a telephone number with letters in (presumably an American number) The error code appears to mean error log full but no one has any idea which log!     Hello there, after reading the announcements about Mac OS X "Lion" and Apples political decision, I've had enough. I'm a longtime Apple User since 1992, have always felt at home there, but am trying to switch to alternative Operating System since a year. I've also been working with Unix machines since 2001, so I'm looking in one of the free Unices or a Linux. Since I last looked at the desktop in 2002 choke much has changed, it seems. So I'm lost once more in the war between desktop environments and software. To be honest: I don't care what it's name is, I want to get my job done. Here's what I set me as landmark for an operating system/software to be considered: Has to be atleast four years old Has to supply security updates for current release for atleast a year Production quality stability for the whole desktop environment (!) No f****g commercial stuff that tends to supply me with privacy invading App Store or Cloud space So far I'm running a MacBook from 2007, 4 Gig memory, 250 Gig disk and I need: IMAPs for Mail since 1995 Webbrowser sic Shell Keeping current with Updates/Upgrades with no more than 5 Minutes spent in entering commands (makes it hard for OpenBSD ;-) ) A desktop filemanger would be nice, but is a bonus. What can you suggest as operating system? The one with the longest support cycles and best chance to survive the next 10 years will win a new user, even sending patches when needed :-) Greets

    I've got a solution which I setup / cleanup using batch files ... - there are a pair of MSMQ ports, send and receive, with another application on the end of the queues I'm finding I can't properly stop the orchestration in the batch file ... the error is the send port is unenlisted - I'm using the StopOrch.vbs script from the SDK samples But I can go into BizTalk Admin Console and manually stop the orchestration with Full Terminate Ok The setup / cleanup works Ok if I don't actually push any messages down the MSMQ queues

  • Flex Drag & Drop: Detecting when all data has been moved from source to destination

    I have two mx:TileList controls that I'm using to allow editing of objects in batch. The first contains a collection of all available data, and the 2nd contains the current batch. Both are bound to ArrayCollections, and using the native drag-n-drop functionality of the TileList control the data is moved from one ArrayCollection to the other when an object is dragged between them. I need to change the currentState to show & reset the batch manipulation controls when the batch count goes from 0 to n or n to 0 items. Based on the documentation, I would have thought that I should listen to the dragComplete event, but my testing shows that instead of firing after the data has been removed from the source ArrayCollection and added to the destination ArrayCollection, it fires (consistently) between these two actions. Both lists are similar to this: <mx:TileList id="srcList" dragEnabled="true" dropEnabled="true" dragMoveEnabled="true" dataProvider="{images}" dragComplete="handleDragComplete(event)" allowMultipleSelection="true" /> And here's the source of the handleDragComplete function: private function handleDragComplete(e:DragEvent):void{ trace(e.dragInitiator.name + '.dragComplete: batch.length=' + batch.length.toString()); trace(e.dragInitiator.name + '.dragComplete: images.length=' + images.length.toString()); if (batch.length > 0){ currentState = 'show'; }else{ currentState = ''; } } And lastly, here's some example output from running the code. These are all run one after the other. Case 1: The application loads with 10 objects in the first list and the batch is empty. I dragged 1 object from the source list to the batch list. srcList.dragComplete: batch.length=1 srcList.dragComplete: images.length=10 (Expected: 1,9) Clearly, the object has been added to the batch ArrayCollection but not removed from the source. Case 2: Now, I'll drag a 2nd object into the batch. srcList.dragComplete: batch.length=2 srcList.dragComplete: images.length=9 (Expected: 2,8) Firstly, we can see that images.length has changed, showing that the object that I dragged from the source list to the batch list was removed AFTER the dragComplete event fired. The same thing happens this time: The new object is added to the batch ArrayCollection (batch.length=2), the dragComplete event fires (running these traces), and then the object is removed from the source ArrayCollection. Case 3: Now, I'll drag both images from the batch list back to their original location in the source list. batchList.dragComplete: batch.length=2 batchList.dragComplete: images.length=10 (Expected: 0,10) We can see that batch.length hasn't gone down, but the source images array is back at its original length of 10. QUESTION: Am I doing something wrong? Is there another event I could listen for? (Note: I tried both DragExit and DragDrop, just to be sure, and those behave as expected, but are not what I need.) Or is there another way to get the data that I want? Or... have I found a bug in the SDK?

    I am VERY new to rsync and cygwin and I'm pretty sure I've installed everything correctly. I am trying to (for now) just rsync two Windows XP Laptops to tranfer files across from the one to the other to get a feel of it before I tackle bigger projects. This is the code I try use to transfer the files but I always get the same error. $ rsync -zrptL -v -e 'ssh -p 222' /tmp/rawr/ [email protected]:/tmp/play [email protected]'s password: 'rsync' is not recognized as an internal or external command, operable program or batch file. rsync: connection unexpectedly closed (0 bytes received so far) [sender] rsync error: error in rsync protocol data stream (code 12) at /home/lapo/package/rsync-3.0.9-1/src/rsync-3.0.9/io.c(605) [sender=3.0.9] What could be the problem? I am really stuck at the moment.

    I'd like to use eventcreate from a batch file to log the results of a file copy job (robocopy). What I'd really like to do is use the output of the file copy job as the description of the event (/D of createevent). The trouble is, there are multiple lines in the file copy output, and I've only been able to get one line into a local variable or a pipe command. I've tried reading a local variable in from file, like set /P myVar=<temp.txt but it only gets the first line. How can I write multiple lines to the description of an event from a batch file?

  • Scheduled task to map a network drive runs, but doesn't map the drive

    I have a task set up to run whenever the computer is logged onto that deletes all network folders and maps a network drive. Here is what is in the batch file: @echo off net use * /delete /y net use b: \\Server\Share /user:DOMAIN\Username password exit When the computer is restarted or logged off and back on, the task runs fine (according to the scheduled tasks window saying when it ran last) but the mapped drive doesn't show up. I'll open the command prompt and type "net use" and it simply says "There are no entries in the list". If I then right click on the task and run it, it works and the mapped drive shows up. I've checked the log and nothing shows up. I've tried adding a timer in the batch file so it waits 10 seconds (ping 1.1.1.1 -n 1 -w 10000nul) thinking that maybe the network wasn't connected, but that didn't work. What else can I try? Thanks!

    I've installed Steam on an external hard drive so I can play games on different computers by just moving the drive around. Since save games are often saved in My Documents or AppData, but I want them to move with the external hard drive, I wrote a batch file that sets environment variables before starting steam. setocal set USERPROFILE=%EXTERNAL_LETTER%\Profile\Me set APPDATA=%USERPROFILE%\AppData\Roaming ... start %TARGETAPP% endlocal I'm not sure if this is the right way to do this on Windows, but it seems to work. However, one game saves its games in the Shared Documents folder. I've tried setting %PUBLIC% and %ALLUSERSPROFILE% but that does not seem to affect where the game looks. Is it possible to make this one program use a different Shared Documents folder, either by environment variables or some other means? The change in Shared Documents should only affect the one program, I do not want it to be a permanent or system wide change to Windows.

  • Strange Windows DIR command behavior

    I discovered this quite by accident while looking for a file with a number in the name. When I type: dir *number* (where number represents any number from 0 to 9 and with no spaces between the asterisks and the number) at the cmd.exe command prompt, it returns various files do not appear in any to fit the search criteria. What's weird, is that depending on the directory, some numbers will work and not others. An example is, in a directory associated with a website, I type the following: dir *4* and what is returned is: Directory of C:\Ampps\www\includes\pages 04/30/2012 03:55 PM 153 inventory_list_retrieve.php 06/18/2012 11:17 AM 6,756 ix.html 06/19/2012 01:47 PM 257,501 jquery.1.7.1.js 3 File(s) 264,410 bytes 0 Dir(s) 362,280,906,752 bytes free That just doesn't make any sense to me. Any clue? The question is posed on stackOverflow because the DIR command is often combined with FOR in batch programs. The strange DIR behavior would seem to make batch programs potentially unreliable if they use the DIR command.

When I execute the same via batch file, I get an error saying The network path was not found I am running as Administrator with full privileges.     I know I can create a batch file to initiate a VPN connection followed by an RDP session, however I want to know if it's possible (in Windows 7 and ideally Windows XP as well) to have the VPN connection tied to the RDP session status. Scenario: user has to VPN first in order to be able to RDP. Ideally user would click one icon (batch file?) to initiate VPN connection and load RDP session. When they close the RDP session I want the VPN to then automatically disconnect so they don't accidentally route their subsequent non-RDP browsing + Internet activity through the VPN.

    I am automating the uninstall of IE9 through executing the command in these instructions inside a batch file: http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/ie/forum/ie9-windows_7/how-to-uninstall-ie9-beta-64-bit-it-is-not-in-the/863d8f3d-c4ab-43e6-9d57-e163ea3baddd The instructions say to run the command twice. The first time the command runs, I get the following error window (3 times): "Windows Package Manager Operation failed with 0x80070005 Access id denied." I click OK for each of these windows, and the rest of the script runs fine and IE8 is usable after restart. Is there a way to suppress these windows? I want this to be fully automated and these windows block the script until the user presses "OK".

    I'm looking for a way to convert thousands of pdf's to searchable pdf's. I've used a program called "PDF Create Assistant" that came with Nuance's ecopy software. However, you can't select a folder, you have to go into each sub folder, select the files to convert, and then go to the next folder. What is another way to convert a large number of pdf's to searchable pdf's? Haven't had any suggestions. Surely there must be a way to batch convert pdf's(?).

    We are using inkscape to convert SVG images uploaded to our server via a web form. For this inkscape offers a batch mode via the -z option, but this batch mode has a flaw: When inkscape is run by the apache user, it breaks saying $ inkscape -z -W drawing.svg X11 connection rejected because of wrong authentication. The application 'inkscape' lost its connection to the display localhost:11.0; most likely the X server was shut down or you killed/destroyed the application. If you do the same as a normal user you also get errors: Xlib: connection to "localhost:11.0" refused by server Xlib: PuTTY X11 proxy: MIT-MAGIC-COOKIE-1 data did not match (inkscape:24050): Gdk-CRITICAL **: gdk_display_list_devices: assertion `GDK_IS_DISPLAY (display)' failed 301.27942 But at least inkscape gives the correct answer (here the number stating the width of the image). Does somebody know how to make this also work for the apache user? Does it make sense to authorize apache to use X (if so how)? In any case it doesn't feel like the right solution...
