• What's a good web-based application for storing your book collection?

  Hi all! I'm looking for a (better if web-based; i.e., something I can install in my home server on my LAN) software to keep track of my books/DVDs/etc. I already know of Readerware offerings, which I find quite interesting, but I'd like something that is Web-based, so I can run it on my MacMini on the living room, and access it from any of the comuputers in the house. I've been googling around, and I've been quite surprised to NOT find any clear option. Alternatively, good "native" software for Windows/MacOSX will be more than welcome. Thanks a lot PS: Given the # of interesting suggestions for Web 2.0, ASP-Hosted type sites, I've clarified the question a bit: I'd prefer some software that I can install and use in my systems, not something "in the cloud" (although I'll check the suggestions out!)

• Show floor-plans online like a map

  Given a floor-plan, which is too big for any screen, even if it is a 17" one, how can I show it online like a map? It would need further functionality that a browser alone does not have (just zoom in/out the entire image won't do the trick). The image will be breaked down into smaller jpgs, so the user will not have to download the whole floorplan at once.It will need some zoom in/zoom out button, and some way or bookmarking position (x,y). open-source solutions prefered.

• DVD (vob file) to online video viewer?

  I've been sent a DVD which needs to be put onto a website, but I honestly don't even know where to start. Do I simply convert the file using some software to MP4(?!) and then use something like http://videojs.com/ to view it online? I'm really sorry for the vague question, but I want to produce the best quality results, with good compression, good quality and a nice video player interface.   I would like to try the book question a little bit differently. My goal is to know what the community thinks are the quintessential computer science textbooks. <beginsadstory>I lost all of my computer science and math books from college in Hurricane Katrina in 2005. I greatly miss having my familiar tomes to refer to when topics and problems come up, so I am looking to rebuild my library.<endsadstory> What are your recommendations for the best examples of academic caliber books for the field of computer science and its associated mathematics? I am looking for books on subjects like computational theory, programming languages, compilers, operating systems, algorithms and so on. Don't limit your suggestions to your textbooks only. If there is a book you have read that covers computer science or a related math in a formal way, but is not strictly a textbook, I would be love to hear about them as well. Finally, for the sake of creating a good reference for all of us, may I suggest posting one book per answer so they can be rated individually.

• Which Stroustrup book should I use?

  I'm a C# programmer that is looking to branch out. I'm bored of writing business software and want to start getting into graphics programming and games/simulators. So I figured, although writing that stuff isn't impossible in managed code, the "right" way to do that would be to look to C++, of course focussing on the language first, then getting into OpenGL or DirectX (or whatever). Way way back ('98? '99?) I had tried and failed to really grasp Stroustrup's The C++ Programming Language. I know that this book is often not recommended for the beginner. Anyway, I picked it back up (in a much more recent printing) and I'm actually getting it and enjoying it. I also have a copy of his textbook, Programming: Principles and Practice Using C++, which, as I understand it, is really geared toward teaching programming, not necessarily C++. I'm certainly not arrogant enough to claim I don't have anything more to learn about programming, data structures, algoriths, etc., however I'm not a novice there either. So my question is, with the goal of gaining the broader and more real-world-useful understanding of C++ and given my background, on which should I focus? The denser (as I perceive it) TCPPPL or the gentler Programming? EDIT: I thank everyone for the responses. However, I've got a personal choice here to make between these two books. Granted there are other very good books out there, but I'm already a good length into both of the books I mention and I'd like to finish one. So, can anyone respond on which would be the better and why? Time is not an issue; I'm not looking (at this point) at an "accelerated" read.

  I am the only developer at a non-profit organization(~200 employees) where we are a M$ shop and 90% of the things I develop are specific to our company and are internal only. I am given a lot of latitude on how I accomplish my goals so using new technologies is in my best interest. So far I have developed all winform & asp.net applications. I would now like to focus on XAML driven development(WPF & Silverlight) and would like your help. I am subscribed to numerous Silverlight blogs and I have went through a few good tutorials however, I would really appreciate a GOOD SOLID book in my hands going forward. I prefer learning books versus reference books and I REALLY would like one from a Business standpoint as well. Shameless, self-promoting is welcomed if you happen to be an author or reviewer for one that meets my criteria. I would, however, prefer that recomendations were based on first-hand experience(no, 'my friend as this awesome book he told me about', please). Though, I don't mind un-released books if say they are an updated version of an existing. disclaimer -- I know there are an insane amount of Book posts here(SO) but none I believe for my specific need. • keeping xmphp bot always online

  I created a simple xmpp bot in PHP which connects to google talk server. I basically modified the cli_longrun example. When I run the script in browser the bot comes online and stays online for a while even after I close the tab on which the script was running (as it is just an infinite loop listening for events on the stream). But after a while the bot becomes offline. The question is how do I keep the bot always online. One way I can think of is to run a cron that would disconnect the earlier one and start a new session. But is there a better approch?

  I've worked with folks who are chatting online with their peers, constantly batting around ideas. I've also worked with folks who adamantly refuse and think it's a waste of time. Are online live chatting forums of particular use to you? Why or why not? Internal to your company, or external and world-wide? Does your employer encourage or discourage their use? Update: I see some people are voting this question down, yet so far all the answers have been positive, if with some reservations. If someone has a strong negative opinion (I hate online chatting and think it should be banned etc.) I'd really like to hear why.

  Hi, I'm trying to build some kind of a social game in facebook, where I need that every user that has approved my APP is able to receive notifications from me. When the user approves my App, I save his UID in the DB for future reference. At some later time, I want to make it possible for other users find partners for a game - so I need a way to pick randomly some user from my DB and check if he's online. Then, send him a message and propose to play with the current player. So 2 questions: How can I check if some user is online, using Javascript SDK? It seems that in the new Graph API I can't get the users' online status. How can I then send him a message and propose to play the game? • Programmatically pushing data to Quickbooks Online?

  Our company uses Quickbooks Online to track our books. When our application bills a customer, it would be nice to have that information recorded automatically in QB rather than logging in to QB Online to fill in the info. Is there a way to accomplish this using Quickbook's APIs? The Intuit developer information is very confusing; it is mainly oriented towards extending the desktop version of Quickbooks or developing apps to publish in Intuit's app store. Have you successfully created a web or other service-side app that was able to pull data to or from QB Online?

• Online remount btrfs of root filesystem with different subvolume (snapshot) [migrated]

  Let's say you have a btrfs root filesystem on an online system. You want to revert the filesystem to an earlier state, of which you have a snapshot: remount /dev/sdaX / -o remount,subvol=snapshots/Y For the record, I've done this in a test system, and it does not work. The command returns with no errors, but the subvolume mounted is the same. If this did work, what would be the consequences? My guess is that open file descriptors would still point to the old subvolume, thus possibly leading to "data loss" on the new subvolume, if one was not careful. Assuming one goes to the trouble of closing and reopening all open file descriptors, does this sound feasible? Or are there other types of problems?

• RAID5 on SmartArray P410i online resize

  I have P410i+256M Cache without battery backup. My RAID5 was build over 3*136GB disks, now all disks were replaced to a 3*300GB array. How can I extend it to use the whole space? HPacucli doesn't allows that, I think this might be because no battery is present. I have a redundant power supply. All data is mirrored over DRBD to a secondary server, so I can try to resize with a chance of loss of data in case of power failure, but I prefer to have an online resize.

• Move MySQL database while instance is online

  I have a MySQL instance containing a number of databases, one of which is an archive database (although using the INNODB rather than ARCHIVE storage engine) that is not queried or written to in normal operation. The data filesystem is filling up and I'd like to move the archive database's data directory to a different filesystem (and then symlink it back, obviously). If there are no SQL statements attempting to query or update the data during the move, can I safely do this while the MySQL instance and the other databases stay online and in use? I plan to rsync the database directory to the new filesystem, then rename the old one on the original filesystem to something different and create the new symlink. lsof reports that MySQL does have the .ibd files open, so presumably it would have to reopen them.

  Ill keep it brief, I have an HP Ultrium 1 in a server currently running CA ArcServe r11.1. I have 5 daily backup tapes, each of which are new. 3 of the 5 work fine without intervention but 2 of them stop at varying points through the backup asking for a new tape, even though that tape is not full. The way I have found around this is to switch the tape drive offline for 10 minutes then switch it back online, whilst the backup is still running. Has anyone ever seen this before? If so, any ideas how to permanently fix this. If all else fails just some pointers in the right direction. Thanks

• Having Troubles Getting My Apache Server Online(NodeJS and Apache)

  I am new here. This is my situation. I am using nodejs modules, serialport2 and socket.io, because I am trying to forward the data from my arduino hardware through serialports. In my server side script, I read the data then forward it to the client side. Now I am using Apache to serve the html page,which is the client side. I am running Nodejs on port 8000 and Apache on port 80. It is running OKAY when I view it in my browser typing localhost:80. The data is appearing and seems fine. Now when I tried to get my Apache server online using a Free DDNS provider(http://www.noip.com/) and my port80, it loaded the webpage but there are no data appearing on the page. What seems to be the problem here? Really need your expertise and advice. Thanks in advanced!
