  • Which Windows 8 edition should I update to from Windows 7 Home Premium?

    I have Windows 7 Home Premium on my laptop, need to upgrade to Windows 8. If there were a Windows 8 Home Premium midway between those two I would've chosen that... but there are only two Windows 8 or Windows 8 Pro, so I'm a bit confused, as I don't want the former to be like Windows 7 Basic. My usage is mostly coding, game development, mid-performance gaming and some benchmarking and video editing. Your recommendations please?

  • Unix: softlinks, hardlinks

    I am somewhat confused what the differences between a softlink, and a hardlink are (on unix). It seems like a softlink is the same as a shortcut in windows or an alias on Mac OS X. (Can someone confirm this?) Softlinks can link to both directories and files. I am uncertain of what a hardlink does or if it is useful.. Is it better to use one instead of the other? Thanks.

    The understanding about Host-only: I use VMware 7, Vmnet1 is the host-only adapter for host and it's IP is 192.168.209.1 . I'm really confused about this , does it connect to Vmnet 1 switch and Vmnet has DHCP also, it provieds IP range: Why it has virtual host adapter ( Vmnet 1) has IP which isn't in range while it's just an adapter in virtual network, it connects through switch Vmnet like the guest adapter Waiting for your answers , thanks in advance :)

    I was curious and confused that what exactly is the behaviour of CTRl+Z. I know, If a process in running in foreground, and we press ctrl+z, it goes to background. But what exactly happens. Does it keep doing it's job, or does it get suspended, and stopped at the point where it was. Can someone please explain.   • I have problems printing from gedit in windows

    Gedit in linux works like a champ. For me, in two installations Gedit in Windows xp works well except that it will not print properly on HP laser jets or toshibas laser printers. It will make a 90 page project out of two pages of text composed in gedit. It puts one or two confused lines of text at the top of a sheet and then ejects the page. Any suggestions? jac

  • postfix system "mail name"

    I am installing postfix and I am confused what to put for the system mail name. It has an exmaple that sais use "example.org" if a mail address on the system is "[email protected]" but it also sais that the mail name should be the FQDN. my hostname is "mercury" and my FQDN is "mercury.pacificseatheat.org", so should I use "pacificseatheat.org" or "mercury.pacificseatheat.org" for the system mail name?   • Monitor occasionally doesn't display properly

    Hi, I am using dual monitors, and this behavior has occured on 2 different computers (using the same monitors). When I turn the monitors off, and then on again after a while, 1 monitor turns on, displays the Dell logo etc. but doesn't display the windows login. It is just a blank page, and then the green light turns orange. Turning it on/off many times or just waiting a while eventually results in it working again, but I am very confused why!

  • Seeking (somewhat) better explanations about supporting > 2.1 TB hard drives.

    Today while Googling about I stumbled across posts claiming that Seagate plans to ship a 3TB drive sometime later in 2010. Unfortunately, the stuff I looked at all seemed to contain tidbits of info which I didn't think fit together properly. (I would link to some examples, but I'm only allowed 1 link per post at the moment). Now I really don't have any "need" to better understand the underlying tedious details of this. I am just curious. And confused. So ... some questions I'm hoping someone better informed than I might answer. The talk about a potential addressing problem in both the hardware and the software confused me. The assertion is that something called something called Long LBA addressing (LLBA) is needed in the Command Descriptor Block as a way to get around the current limits to access a hard drive bigger than ~2.1 (or ~2.2?) TB. OK, fine. But I thought the last time this problem came up it was solved by extending the length of the LBA field from 28 to 48 bits. (Remember this website? www.48bitlba.com) A 6 byte LBA is clearly large enough, so what's up with this LLBA talk. I thought this was all fixed back by Win XP SP2, if not sooner? And certainly all the hardware should be up to the task, shouldn't it? The real problem as I understand it with drives much bigger than 2 TB are the 4 byte LBA fields in the Master Boot Record (MBR) used to partition just about all hard drives at the moment. The most likely solution is to migrate to Intel's GUID Partition Table (GPT). A GPT uses 8 byte fields for the LBA. What I don't understand in this context is what is the problem with booting say Windows from a 3TB drive that uses a GPT. Granted, the current PC BIOS wouldn't know how to recognize or work with a GPT. But every GPT comes with a so-called "Safety" or "Guarding" MBR in sector 0.Apple already uses a hybrid version of the MBR to allow them to boot Windows on their Intel Macs (aka Boot Camp). Couldn't something similar be done to allow the PC BIOS to recognize and boot from a partition in, say, the first 1 GB of a 3GB or larger drive? I've got more questions such as where do 4K sectors fit into all of this. But it's probably time I just shut up and posted this. ;-) -irrational john

Recently i had switched to chrome to find that its much faster than Firefox, but addons like greasemonkey, adblock plus, tweeterfox etc. keeps me wanting to use Firefox. Now I am confused between which of the two to use. Can someone provide some advice on how to be as productive in Chrome as when using FireFox?

  • Qemu not installed on ubuntu with xen 4.0.1 ?

I've installed Xen on a fresh/clean ubuntu 10.10 server (x64) using : hg clone xen-4.0-testing.hg make world make install-kernels Trying to launch qemu; first "not found" Then I installed from source (from tarballs at qemu.org) But then qemu complains about not finding /dev/kvm Am I missing something here ? I thought that qemu was part of xen install (at least it was from 3.x series). All i have is qemu-img-xen and qemu-nbd-xen.

    Hi. I'm confused. I have two users in system: u1 and u2, and group u1. both u1 and u2 belong to g1. I've created directory /opt/d with properties: drwxrwxr-x 2 u1 u1 512B May 26 17:55 d AFAIK, this configuration allows both users write to directory. But, from u2: touch /opt/d/x touch: /opt/d/x: Permission denied And same configuration on RHEL5 works fine. What i've missed? Thanks.

  • Will running CSF & Bastille cause any conflicts?

The most recent advice I have been given is to install both CSF and Bastille on my server (used to serve a consumer-facing ecommerce site and act as the business' email server), but my understanding was that both of these tools were an abstraction layer above netfilter / iptables.     I followed the steps here to set up Sharepoint integration with reporting services (SSRS) using native mode. (i.e., get a report explorer and viewer web parts) However after adding the cabinet file e.g., STSADM.EXE -o addwppack -filename "C:\ Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\100\Tools\Reporting Services\SharePoint\RSWebParts.cab" -globalinstall I still don't see report explorer in the web parts list. I'm very stuck and confused :-(
