• Wifi network undetectable on a Lenovo G470

  I have a WPA2 secured network with a visible SSID at home that works perfectly fine with a Dell laptop,a HP netbook and sundry mobile phones. When I try connecting my sister's Lenovo G470, it refuses to detect the wifi network no matter what, but shows up the neighbors' networks. The Lenovo also works correctly at her office. Both laptops run Windows 7. Already tried/checked the following: Manually configure wifi network settings (copied over from the Dell) Ensure there is no MAC address filtering on the router. Ensure router DHCP server is not running out of addresses to assign (I have set it to allocate upto 10). Reboot laptop, router etc. Is this a known problem, and is there anything else one could try? Update - The problematic Lenovo uses Windows 7 Home Basic while the Dell that works uses Home Premium and the HP netbook uses Starter edition - if that makes any difference. Further update - It is able to connect if I reboot into safe mode with networking. However in 'normal' mode it shows up the network sporadically, and then says there was an error connecting to it. All the network parameters, password, encryption, etc etc are EXACTLY the same as they are on the Dell.

• DVI splitter not working as expected/confusion between DVI-D and -I

  Hey guys, thanks for looking. I have an ATI FirePro™ V3700 in my desktop machine, and I have been running a dual-monitor setup quite effortlessly, thanks to the two DVI ports on the card. I came upon a third monitor, and wanted to extend my desktop to 3 screens, so I purchased a DVI splitter from Amazon. Now, I can only duplicate the second monitor onto the third, not extend it. I've tried all possible combinations of input to no avail. Here's the setup: The ATI FirePro™ V3700 has two Dual-Link DVI-I outputs The splitter splits a single Dual-Link DVI-I port into two Dual-Link DVI-I outputs Two of the monitors are NEC E222W, and the third monitor is a Dell 2001FP. Each monitor has one D-Sub and one Dual-Link DVI-D input. Cables going from the video card to the monitors are two Dual-Link DVI-D to the NECs and one Single-Link DVI-D to the Dell. Is the problem likely with the DVI-D/DVI-I mismatch? Or is it with the cable on the Dell that is only a Single-Link? The cables are easily replaceable, the monitors not so much. • Windows 7: Dual Monitor Issue

  I have a Dell laptop with a docking station and two external monitors hooked up. I'm running Windows 7 64 bit. Originally, the two monitors were the same - Dell 1908FP. I have replaced one of them with an HP LA2405. I have set the HP 24" (1920 x 1200 connected via DVI port) as montior 1 and extended to use the Dell 19" (12080 x 1024 connected via VGA port) as monitor 2. I have set my power plan so that when the laptop is plugged in, it will turn the monitors off after 10 minutes, but it will not put my laptop to sleep. However, now that I have the HP monitor, when I unlock my laptop and the monitors come back on, all my windows are resized and shifted to the top left corner of the HP monitor as if they had been resized for display on the smaller Dell monitor. A co-worker has the exact same laptop and monitor configuration but doesn't experience this issue, so I figure there's some configuration that's different but we can't find it. I haven't been able to find any mention of a similar problem doing an internet search, but I'm not really sure what terms to use in my search. Anybody have any suggestions as to what may be causing the issue? OS setting? Monitor setting? EDIT: My laptop is using the Intel Graphics and Media Control Panel/drivers.

• Ubutu 14.04 triple screen, third screen black and X cursor

  I am having some issues getting my third screen working properly. I had triple screens working fine on 12.04, using 2 nvidia cards. Did a fresh install of 14.04 and having no end of problems getting it working. It either will just be disabled, or the screen is black with the cursor as an X. I can only enable it from the nvidia server settings tool. The Ubuntu native display settings won't even show the 3rd screen. I tried copying the xorg.conf from my old install, which upon restarting X worked fine on the login screen, but then it just sat there after I logged in and didn’t do anything (mouse was still working). I am using gnome-session-fallback instead of unity if that makes any difference. Still having these issues if I try unity though. How do I get my 3rd screen working and displaying a desktop? • Building a Store Locator ASP.NET Application Using Google Maps API

  The past couple of projects I've been working on have included the use of the Google Maps API and geocoding service in websites for various reasons. I decided to tie together some of the lessons learned, build an ASP.NETstore locator demo, and write about it on 4Guys. Last week I published the first article in what I think will be a three-part series: Building a Store Locator ASP.NET Application Using Google Maps (Part 1). Part 1 walks through creating a demo where a user can type in an address and any stores within a (roughly) 15 mile area will be displayed in a grid.The article begins with a look at the database used to power the store locator (namely, a single table that contains one row for every location, with each location storing its store number, address, and, most important, latitude and longitude coordinates) and then turns to usingGoogle's geocoding service to translatea user-entered address into latitude and longitude coordinates. The latitude and longitude coordinates are used to find nearby stores, which are then displayed in a grid. Part 2 looks at enhancing the search results to include a map with markers indicating the position of each nearby store location. The Google Maps API, along with a bit of client-side script and server-side logic, make this actually pretty straightforward and easy to implement. Here's a screen shot of the improved store locator results. Part 3, which I plan on publishing next week, looks at how to enhance the map by using information windows to display address information when clicking a marker. Additionally, I'll show how to use custom icons for the markers so that instead of having the same marker for each nearby location the markers will be images numbered 1, 2, 3, and so on, which will correspond to a number assigned to each search result in the grid. The idea here is that by numbering the search results in the grid and the markers on the map visitors will quickly be able to see what marker corresponds to what search result. This article and demo has been a lot of fun to write and create, and I hope you enjoy reading it, too. • setTimeout in javascript not giving browser 'breathing room'

  Alright, I thought I had this whole setTimeout thing perfect but I seem to be horribly mistaken. I'm using excanvas and javascript to draw a map of my home state, however the drawing procedure chokes the browser. Right now I'm forced to pander to IE6 because I'm in a big organisation, which is probably a large part of the slowness. So what I thought I'd do is build a procedure called distributedDrawPolys (I'm probably using the wrong word there, so don't focus on the word distributed) which basically pops the polygons off of a global array in order to draw 50 of them at a time. This is the method that pushes the polygons on to the global array and runs the setTimeout: for (var x = 0; x < polygon.length; x++) { coordsObject.push(polygon[x]); fifty++; if (fifty > 49) { timeOutID = setTimeout(distributedDrawPolys, 5000); fifty = 0; } } I put an alert at the end of that method, it runs in practically a second. • On Server Disk Storage VS SAN Storage

  Hello, I am looking at buying three servers, and trying to figure out which storage solution makes the most sense in terms of performance and cost. Total budget is around: $10,000. OPTION 1: Dell servers with RAID 10 (4 Drives) each 7200RPM SAS 500GB, for a total capacity of 1TB. Each server is approx: $3000. Total storage then across all three servers is 3TB. OPTION 2: Same Dell servers with a cheap single drive no RAID for $2000 and go with a centralized SAN solution. The biggest problem is that I haven't been able to even find a SAN solution that is a reasonable price. Dell entry level storage servers are like $15,000. I am thinking just iSCSI, not fiber (too expensive). What do you guys recommend?

• Xeon X5550 vs Six-core Opteron for database server

  I'm specing out a database server, and the price works out to be reasonably close between an Intel X5550 Quad-core and an AMD 2425HE (2.1Ghz) Six-core Opteron. I've been looking for some comparisons between the two, but the only thing useful I've found is an AnandTech Review of the 2435 which compares it to Intel Xeons, but concludes they both have their place. My load is MS SQL Server 2008, with an OLTP database that has about an equal amount of reading/writing (and it's a reasonably heavy load). So my question is, what is going to work better in this situation, assuming the drives are the same: Xeon X5550, with 16GB 1333Mhz RAM (Dell R510) or an Opteron 2425HE (2.1Ghz) or 2439SE (2.8Ghz) with 16GB of 800Mhz RAM? (Dell 2970) Note: the 2439 adds $500, but the overall pricing works out that it's not that much more than the R510. Using the 2425HE, the Dell 2970 server is slightly less than the similarly-equipped R510). If it adds a decent amount of performance, it's worthwhile to go faster. (single CPU, in both cases).

  I had removed my HD from a Dell laptop and accessed it with an external HD port on another computer. Though after returning it to the Dell laptop, it will no longer boot. The PC came pre-installed with Windows 7 and I do not have an installation disk. None of the contents of the original install have been removed or modified. If I use another laptop running Windows 7 to create a repair/recovery disk, would I be able to use it on my Dell to repair the boot sector? How can I repair the bootmgr? It's frustrating knowing there's a perfectly good operating system there that wont boot. Thanks for your time!

  We are in the process of setting up two virtualization servers (DELL R710, Dual Quadcore Xeon CPUs at 2.3 Ghz, 48 GB RAM) for VMware VSphere with storage on a SAN (DELL Powervault MD3000i, 10x 500 GB SAS drives, RAID 5) which will be attached via iSCSI on a Gbit Ethernet Switch (DELL Powerconnect 5424, they call it "iSCSI-optimized"). Can anyone give an estimate how much faster a fiber channel based solution would be (or better "feel")? I don't mean the nominal speed advantage, I mean how much faster will virtual machines effectively work? Are we talking twice the speed, five times, 10 times faster? Does it justify the price? PS: We are not talking about heavily used database servers or exchange servers. Most of the virtualized servers run below 3-5% average CPU load.

• Winlogon.exe causes C++ runtime error

  Recently I've become unable to log into my Dell Precision M2400. It uses the Dell Controlpoint login GUI instead of the typical windows one, and has now started giving me a runtime error on winlogon.exe that ends with a c000021a BSOD. I have tried running through safe mode and a restore to the last known good setting with no success. Unfortunately by BIOS password is locked and the one IT guy with the password is on vacation and unreachable until after I leave for a business trip. Is there anyway to bypass the Dell logon screen and get to the default windows one? Thanks.

• Only two monitor ports are detected on nVidia Quadro NVS 450

  I have an nVidia Quadro NVS 450 installed in a Dell Optiron 380. Only DisplayPort #1 and DisplayPort #4 are detected by windows. The machine has a BIOS setting to automatically choose the primary video card, or to disable the primary when a PCI-e card is installed (which it is). Windows cannot see DisplayPort #2 and #3 no matter what I do. I have tried the Windows Drivers, latest nVidia Drivers - no dice. I am assured that this video card cannot break in this way. I'm plum out of ideas. I've tried reseating the video card. I've contacted Dell and they've remoted in and looked around - threw their arms up after two hours. Any ideas? I'm running Windows 7 64-bit. All four monitors are 1600x1200 Dell monitors.

The macbook pro has a resolution of 1440x900 so when I VNC into it, I can only see 1440x900 box with black borders on full resolution. The macbook pro can drive resolutions of 2560x1440. What program do I use to connect to the macbook at full (1920x1080) resolution. I can use remote desktop and connect from the dell laptop to another dell laptop that has a 1440x900 max. resolution. However in case of Remote desktop connection I can expand the window to be 1920x1080. I'm using TightVNC viewer on Windows. Thanks

  Will this increase my Virtual private Server failing rate if i :- install Microsoft Window Server 2008 Enterprise install SQL server enterprise 2008 install IIS 7.5 install ASP.Net Mvc 2 install Microsoft Exchange install Team foundation server on one mini VPS with specification of DELL Poweredge R710 shared plan DDR3 ECC RAMs 16GB and -- 1GB for this VPS using DELL PERC 6i raid controller (this thing alone about 1.5k-2k) and the SAS HDD (15K RPM) (146GB) -- 33GB to this VPS each hdd is freaking fast over 300MB read / write possible with proper tuning the motherboard is a DELL and it has twin redundant PSU (870watt 85%eff) its running on Intel Xeon 5502 (Quad Core) x2 so about 8 physical proc (fairly share) is there any ruler for this about one VPS can only install what what what service ? • Using old RAID configured disk after new disk has been used in the controller

  I have Dell Poweredge T100 server with Dell SAS 6 and two hard disk on RAID 1. Last week the server died including one RAID 1 hard disk. We sent the server for repair and the problem with PSU was fixed. But the repair guys also checked the RAID controller by configuring new RAID with their test hard disk. Now if I install one working RAID 1 disk and one new disk, will the RAID controller let me continue my old RAID 1 and resync the new disk and continue? What I fear is the RAID controller will want the test hard from repair guys. Thus I have to re configure RAID 1 forcing me to wipe the working disc. If so, I've to backup the working disc, reconfigure RAID 1 and reinstall? Or is there better way? Note: I'm using DELL SAS confiugratio utility to manage RAID. (Press CTRL+C after BIOS)

• ATI Catalyst setting to stretch Windows XP start bar across both displays

This works fine, but I'm used to NVIDIA multi-desktop that let me control the "Start bar" to either exist on only 1 screen... be duplicated on both, or (what I want), stretched across both. • Cheap machine with Xen to have more than one personal dev servers with RAID option?

  I do not have a lot of money so when I need a personal dev servers I decided I will use Xen on one machine to run various OS's. Although, I really like Dell Zino (http://www.dell.com/us/en/home/desktops/inspiron-zino-hd/pd.aspx?refid=inspiron-zino-hd&cs=19&s=dhs) as a very economical and compact PC which can be scaled to 8GB of RAM, I do not know how to have a RAID setup, for the backup. Is there an economical way to add a RAID setup to Dell Zino or I would have to invest in a proper box for that? • Network Printer Issue.

  Hello, I have a Windows-7 Desktop at office. There is a network printer Dell MFP2335dn which is installed on this dekstop. The printer worked fine for me(I could print from my desktop), sometime back but recently i am not been able to print. When i give a print job, it stays in the queue for a long time, nothing gets printed. When i see the status of the printer in "Devices and Printers", it says - Offline. I removed the printer installed on my Desktop, and tried to install the drivers downloaded from Dell website: http://support.euro.dell.com/support/downloads/download.aspx?c=uk&l=en&s=gen&releaseid=R241894&formatcnt=0&libid=0&typeid=-1&dateid=-1&formatid=-1&source=-1&fileid=349205 But still the same problem.   I have two Dell PCs. And each PC has a Windows Vista disc and a Windows 7 upgrade disc which Dell gave me for free. And each disc has a product key. There are 4 product keys in total. I'm going to sell one of the Dell PCs. But unfortunately I don't know which product key of Windows 7 corresponds to which product key of Windows Vista. If I sell the PC with wrong combination of a Windows Vista and a Windows 7, error will occur and I will get in trouble. How can I know which Windows 7 corresponds to which Windows Vista?
