  • What are some ways to accomplish a dynamic array?

    - by Ted
I'm going to start working on a new game and one of the things I'd like to accomplish is a dynamic array sort of system that would hold map data. The game will be top-down 2d and made with XNA 4.0 and C#. You will begin in a randomized area which will essentially be tile based. As such a 2 dimensional array would be one way to accomplish this by holding numerical values which would correspond to a list of textures and that would be how it would draw this randomly created map. The problem is I would kind of only like to create the area around where you start and they could venture in which ever direction they wanted to. This would mean I'd have to populate the map array with more randomized data in the direction they go. I could make a really large array and use the center of it and the rest would be in anticipation of new content to be made, but that just seems very inefficient. I suppose when they start a new game I could have a one time map creation process that would go through and create a large randomly generated map array, but holding all of in memory at all times seems also inefficient. Perhaps if there was a way that I'd only hold parts of that map data in memory at one time and somehow not hold the rest in memory. In the end I only need to have a chunk of the map somewhat close to them in memory so perhaps some of you might have suggestions on good ways to approach this kind of randomized map and dynamic array problem. It wouldn't need to be a dynamic array type of thing if I made it so that it pulled in map data nearby that is needed and then once off the screen and not needed it could somehow get rid of that memory that way I wouldn't have a huge array taking up a bunch of memory.

  • Problem Initializing an Array Of Structs

    - by FallSe7en
I am trying to initialize the following array of the following struct, but my code isn't compiling. Can anybody help me out? The struct/array: struct DiningCarSeat { int status; int order; int waiterNum; Lock customerLock; Condition customer; DiningCarSeat(seatNum) { char* tempLockName; sprintf(tempLockName, "diningCarSeatLock%d", seatNum); char* tempConditionName; sprintf(tempConditionName, "diningCarSeatCondition%d", seatNum); status = 0; order = 0; waiterNum = -1; customerLock = new Lock(tempLockName); customer = new Condition(tempConditionName); } } diningCarSeat[DINING_CAR_CAPACITY]; The relevant errors: ../threads/threadtest.cc: In constructor `DiningCarSeat::DiningCarSeat(int)': ../threads/threadtest.cc:58: error: no matching function for call to `Lock::Lock()' ../threads/synch.h:66: note: candidates are: Lock::Lock(const Lock&) ../threads/synch.h:68: note: Lock::Lock(char*) ../threads/threadtest.cc:58: error: no matching function for call to `Condition::Condition()' ../threads/synch.h:119: note: candidates are: Condition::Condition(const Condition&) ../threads/synch.h:121: note: Condition::Condition(char*) ../threads/threadtest.cc:63: error: expected primary-expression before '.' token ../threads/threadtest.cc:64: error: expected primary-expression before '.' token ../threads/threadtest.cc: At global scope: ../threads/threadtest.cc:69: error: no matching function for call to `DiningCarSeat::DiningCarSeat()' ../threads/threadtest.cc:51: note: candidates are: DiningCarSeat::DiningCarSeat(const DiningCarSeat&) ../threads/threadtest.cc:58: note: DiningCarSeat::DiningCarSeat(int) Thanks in advance!

  • c++ optimize array of ints

    - by a432511
I have a 2D lookup table of int16_t. int16_t my_array[37][73] = {{**DATA HERE**}} I have a mixture of values that range from just above the range of int8_t to just below the range of int8_t and some of the values repeat themselves. I am trying to reduce the size of this lookup table. What I have done so far is split each int16_t value into two int8_t values to visualize the wasted bytes. int8_t part_1 = original_value >> 4; int8_t part_2 = original_value & 0x0000FFFF; // If the upper 4 bits of the original_value were empty if(part_1 == 0) wasted_bytes_count++; I can easily remove the zero value int8_t that are wasting a byte of space and I can also remove the duplicate values, but my question is how do I do remove those values while retaining the ability to lookup based on the two indices? I contemplated translating this into a 1D array and adding a number following each duplicated value that would represent the number of duplicates that were removed, but I am struggling with how I would then identify what is a lookup value and what is a duplicate count. Also, it is further complicated by stripping out the zero int8_t values that were wasted bytes. EDIT: This array is stored in ROM already. RAM is even more limited than ROM so it is already stored in ROM. EDIT: I am going to post a bounty for this question as soon as I can. I need a complete answer of how to store the information AND retrieve it. It does not need to be a 2D array as long as I can get the same values. EDIT: Adding the actual array below: • Managing many draw calls for dynamic objects

    - by codetiger
We are developing a game (cross-platform) using Irrlicht. The game has many (around 200 - 500) dynamic objects flying around during the game. Most of these objects are static mesh and build from 20 - 50 unique Meshes. We created seperate scenenodes for each object and referring its mesh instance. But the output was very much unexpected. Menu screen: (150 tris - Just to show you the full speed rendering performance of 2 test computers) a) NVidia Quadro FX 3800 with 1GB: 1600 FPS DirectX and 2600 FPS on OpenGL b) Mac Mini with Geforce 9400M 256mb: 260 FPS in OpenGL Now inside the game in a test level: (160 dynamic objects counting around 10K tris): a) NVidia Quadro FX 3800 with 1GB: 45 FPS DirectX and 50 FPS on OpenGL b) Mac Mini with Geforce 9400M 256mb: 45 FPS in OpenGL Obviously we don't have the option of mesh batch rendering as most of the objects are dynamic. And the one big static terrain is already in single mesh buffer. To add more information, we use one 2048 png for texture for most of the dynamic objects. And our collision detection hardly and other calculations hardly make any impact on FPS. So we understood its the draw calls we make that eats up all FPS. Is there a way we can optimize the rendering, or are we missing something?

  • how to merge multiple url/path into multidimensional array ?

    I have array like this: $path = array ( [0] => site\projects\terrace_and_balcony\mexico.jpg [1] => site\projects\terrace_and_balcony\new_york.jpg [2] => site\projects\terrace_and_balcony\berlin.jpg [3] => site\projects\terrace_and_balcony\Kentucky.jpg [4] => site\projects\terrace_and_balcony\Utah.jpg [5] => site\projects\terrace_and_balcony\Hawaii.jpg [6] => site\projects\private_gardens\mexico.jpg [7] => site\projects\private_gardens\new_york.jpg [8] => site\projects\private_gardens\berlin.jpg [9] => site\projects\private_gardens\Kentucky.jpg [10] => site\projects\private_gardens\Utah.jpg [11] => site\projects\private_gardens\Hawaii.jpg ) How to convert it to that: $path11 = array ( "site"=>array ( "projects"=>array ( "terrace_and_balcony"=>array ( "mexico.jpg", "new_york.jpg", "berlin.jpg", "Kentucky.jpg", "Utah.jpg", "Hawaii.jpg" ), "private_gardens"=>array ( "mexico.jpg", "new_york.jpg", "berlin.jpg", "Kentucky.jpg", "Utah.jpg", "Hawaii.jpg" ) ) ) );

  • In C, is it possible do free only an array first ou last position?

    - by user354959
Hi there! I've an array, but I don't need its first (or last) position. So I point a new variable to the rest of the array, but I should free the array first/last position. For instance: p = read_csv_file(); q = p + 1; // I don't need the first CSV file field // Here I'd like to free only the first position of p return q; Otherwise I've to memcpy the array to other variable, excluding the first position, and then free the original array. Like this: p = read_csv_file(); q = (int*) malloc(sizeof(int) * (SOME_SIZE - 1)); memcpy(q, p+1, sizeof(int) * (SOME_SIZE - 1)); free(p); return q; But then I'll have the overhead of copying all the array. Is this possible to only free a single position of an array?

  • Can't make an array in C#

    - by Josh
I'm trying to make a dynamic array in C# but I get an annoying error message. Here's my code: private void Form1_Load(object sender, EventArgs e) { int[] dataArray; Random random = new Random(); for (int i = 0; i < random.Next(1, 10); i++) { dataArray[i] = random.Next(1, 1000); } } And the error: Use of unassigned local variable 'dataArray' This is just baffling my mind. I came from VB, so please me gentle, lol. Cheers.

  • Can I use array_push on a SESSION array in php?

    - by zeckdude
I have an array that I want on multiple pages, so I made it a SESSION array. I want to add a series of names and then on another page, I want to be able to use a foreach loop to echo out all the names in that array. This is the session: $_SESSION['names'] I want to add a series of names to that array using array_push like this: array_push($_SESSION['names'],$name); I am getting this error: array_push() [function.array-push]: First argument should be an array Can I use array_push to put multiple values into that array? Or perhaps there is a better, more efficient way of doing what I am trying to achieve?

  • C++ Array of Variable sized Arrays

    - by adam
I am very new to C++ and I realise the following is not necessarily as easy as I'd like it to be, but I'd really appreciate a more expert opinion. I am essentially trying to achieve a dynamic iteration over a variable sized array of variable sized arrays similar to the following. String *2d_array[][] = {{"A1","A2"},{"B1","B2","B3"},{"C1"}}; for (int i=0; i<2d_array.length; i++) { for (int j=0; j<2d_array[i].length; j++) { print(2d_array[i][j]); } } Is there a reasonable way to do this? Perhaps by using a vector, or another struct? Thanks :)

  • What is array portability?

    - by bobo
From this page: http://www.doctrine-project.org/documentation/manual/1_2/en/working-with-models#dealing-with-relations:creating-related-records You can see that it says $obj['property']; is the recommended way of referring to an object's property in Doctrine for array portability purposes. I never heard about this term before and google did not come up with useful result. What is that?

  • Changing array values in a VBA dictionary

    - by Pawan Jain
Hi I have a piece of code that does not seem to do what it is expected to do. VBA Arrays are mutable by all means, but it seems that when they are stored into a Dictionary as values of some keys, they are not mutable anymore. Any ideas? Sub foo() Dim mydict As New Dictionary mydict.Add "A", Array(1, 2, 3) MsgBox mydict("A")(1) ' The above shows 2, which is fine mydict("A")(1) = 34 MsgBox mydict("A")(1) ' The above also shows 2, which is not fine End Sub

  • sort associative array in awk - help?

    - by Richard
Hi all, I have an associative array in awk that gets populated like this... chr_count[$3]++ When I try to print my chr_counts I use this: for (i in chr_count) { print i,":",chr_count[i]; } But not surprisingly, the order of i is not sorted in any way. Is there an easy way to iterate over the sorted "keys" of chr_count?

  • Creating array with constant

    - by wrongusername
I was working on a program in Netbeans on Linux using a gcc compiler when, upon switching to Visual C++ on Windows 7, the code failed to compile as Visual C++ says it expected constant expression on several lines. On Netbeans, I simply did something similar to char name[fullName.size()];, while on Visual C++, I tried, among other things, const int position = fullName.size(); char Name[position]; How can I create a constant to use for the array?

  • vb.net one dimensional string array manipulation difficulty

    - by Luay
Hi, I am having some problems with manipulating a one dimensional string array in vb.net and would like your assistance please. My objective is to get 4 variables (if possible) from a file path. these variables are: myCountry, myCity, myStreet, Filename. All declared as string. The file location is also declared as string. so I have: Dim filePath As String to illustrate my problem and what I am trying to do I have the following examples: 1- C:\my\location\is\UK\Birmingham\Summer Road\this house.txt. In this example myCountry would be= UK. myCity= Birmingham. myStreet=Summer Road. Filename=this house.txt 2- C:\my Location\is\France\Lyon\that house.txt. here myCountry=France. myCity=Lyon. There is no street. Filename=that house.txt 3- C:\my Location is\Germany\the other house.txt Here myCountry=Germany. No city. No street. Filename=the other house.txt What I am trying to say is I have no idea before hand about the lenght of the string or the position of the variables I want. I also don't know if I am going to find/get a city or street name in the path. However I do now that i will get myCountry and it will be one of 5 options: UK, France, Germany, Spain, Italy. To tackle my problem, the first thing I did was Dim pathArr() As String = filePath.Split("\") to get the FileName I did: FileName = pathArr.Last To get myCountry I did: If filePath.Contains("UK") Then myCountry = "UK" ElseIf filePath.Contains("France") Then myCountry = "France" ElseIf filePath.Contains("Germany") Then myCountry = "Germany" ElseIf filePath.Contains("Spain") Then myCountry = "Spain" ElseIf filePath.Contains("Italy") Then myCountry = "Italy" End If in trying to figure out myCity and myStreet (and whether they exist in the string in the first place) I started with: Dim ind As Integer = Array.IndexOf(pathArr, myCountry) to get the index of the myCountry string. I thought I could make my way from there but I am stuck and don't know what to do next. Any help will be appreciated. Thanks

  • weird array syntax

    - by dnagirl
I'm trying to figure how a function I've been given works -- or rather doesn't work. The problematic areas include array notation like this: $small[$end[$i]{0}] I think the idea is to append "0" to the value of $end[$i] and use that for the index of $small. But it doesn't work in PHP5.3. Is this a deprecated syntax and is it trying to do what I think it is?
