• Linux file permissions not being preserved

  I am deploying some custom software as root (a necessity for this situation). I set the owner/group to user1:user1 and set all the files to 644 beforehand in shell, then copy and deploy with ant. However, when files get copied over from the deployment directory, the ownership changes back to root and all the files install with 666 permissions. This seems to occur whether the file is overwritten or newly created. I believe there is a way to set an option in cp, mv commands to preserve permissions, but that would be a lot of commands to change. How can I fix this? Is there some setting I can change temporarily for root so the install always preserves the file permissions?

• Windows file sharing connects over WiFi instead of LAN

  I have a laptop and a desktop computer, and I need to sync lots of files to the laptop and back whenever I go on a trip, etc. I've got a LAN cable connected into an extra port on the desktop that I plug into the laptop so I can get gigabit file transfers instead of wireless G. They connect fine. If I do an FTP transfer, for instance, using the LAN IP addresses, it goes at ~40MB/s, as it should. However when I copy files using explorer and native windows file sharing it detects the other computer by name, not IP (eg \\DESKTOP-PC\ instead of \\192.168.0.100\) and always connects to it by its wireless IP address instead of the faster LAN address. Both computers are running Windows 7. I have tried editing the priorities of the adapters in Advanced Settings and putting the LAN adapters above the wifi ones, but this didn't have any effect

• Fixing/Extending Standard Windows File Open/Save Dialog [closed]

  Possible Duplicate: Change left side link of the Save As Dialog for a DropBox one? Almost every time I use the standard Windows (XP) File Open/Save Dialog I get frustrated in how long it takes me to navigate to where I want to go. :-( (I won't even get into the MS Office dialog that makes things even worse) This is the dialog I'm referring to (with some notes) Notes: Wouldn't a Drive list be handy in here? C:\, D:\, E:\, etc. What about a breadcrumb URI? (the magenta list of links) Why isn't Program Files one of the icons on the left? (green) I'm always going in there for something Why can't I type "../../../" to navigate up multiple directories in the File name box? (blue) There has got to be some utilities out there that can "hijack" or "overwrite" this core windows dialog to provide a much better set of options. I'm looking for any/all solutions to help fix this dialog.

• Windows 7 can't copy file - Error 0x800700DF: The file size exceeds the limit allowed and cannot be saved

  Any attempt to copy files larger than about 40 MB from a network share (a SAN running open filer / Samba) to my local machine running Windows 7 always results in the following error and the copy fails: Error 0x800700DF: The file size exceeds the limit allowed and cannot be saved. I've tried copying to my C: drive and a USB drive with the same results. Smaller files copy just fine. Clearly 40 MB is not that big of a file so I'm assuming it is some buggy interaction between windows 7 and Samba perhaps. Google has so far turned up nothing. Can anyone point me in the right direction?

• Copying single files into a folder that changes name every time the batch file is executed

  Can you please help, I am using this to put the text files made by the batch file into the folder created by the batch file as well. but my problem is that the name is changed of the new folder every time because it is named by the date and time it was created. • How to use File History with Recovery partition?

  I formatted the recovery partition right after installing Windows 8. I'm curious as to why File history only allow the use of external HDD. Instead of using the Recovery Partition. I can't find a way to use it. I decided to use it exclusively for Restore Points. Is there any way to make the Recovery Partition exclusively for the use of File History? Or should I use 3rd Party programs instead, (Easeus Todo Backup, Macrium Reflect, etc)?

• Batch file to ZIP only files in directory or sub directory

  I wanted to know if possible how to create a command line to do the following - if a directory exist ZIP only the contents into a ZIP file. If a directory has sub-directories ZIP only the contents into another ZIP file. Example: C:\Directory\sample.txt ZIP only sample.txt C:\Directory\Directory1\sample1.txt ZIP only sample1.txt C:\Directory\Directory1\Directory2\sample2.txt ZIP only sample2.txt So it would have created 3 zip files in C:\Directory and sub-directories. I will not know the name of the sub-directories so can I also assign some sort of variable that says if there are directories or sub-directories in C:\Directory then start above ZIP(s)? • Stupid question: prevent file from being changed under linux

  Ok. Stupid question. I have forgotten what this is called and without remembering the name the search function on the site and on google is failing me. What's the command under linux to mark a file as "locked"/to prevent any changes from being made to it? I'm not talking about chmod. There's a property that can be set (again the name escapes me at the moment) which prevents even processes running as root from changing a file. What is this called and how do I set it?

• Windows' "open with" with java and a jar file

  I use the rest-client to test REST APIs. It is basically just a .jar file, that is called via java -jar rest-client.jar. The rest-client uses two file extensions, in my case .rcq, to store data in files. I want to let the explorer open .rcq files with java -jar rest-client.jar <infile>, however, if I configure it (via GUI) to use the JAR alone, it obviously doesn't work. I'd be fine with touching HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT for this, as well, but don't know the exact syntax. By the way: It's WinXP.

• Starting services in batch file on windows 7

  I have a fairly simple batch file which does just one thing - "net start myservice". This batch file gets shortcut-ed in a program group by installer so that users can simply click on the icon and get things started (or stopped). All works well in XP for the users with admin rights. But things get hairy on Win7 as the batch need to be run "as administrator" explicitly and often users don't know this. So my question is how to make this friendly? Telling users to right click and run as admin on Win7 and simply click on XP is kind of weird twist. I need a smart automatic simple thingy. I could probably use "runas/user:administrator" in the batch itself, but this "administrator" account might not be available on some machines. I'm looking for a universal solution for installing things like this on any Windows box. Ideas? How would you do this?

• List existing file server permission groups/users

  So we have taken over a new client and their existing file server is frankly a mess. We have migrated their old file server from a 2k box to a 2k8 DFS cluster and now I'm looking at rebuilding both the folder structure and their permissions. Unfortunately its been half done with AD groups (poorly named/no description/notes) and half with individuals named in security on the folders themselves. What I'm looking to do is to dump a complete list of all the folders with their security permissions (ideally I'd like to ignore files but not essential). CACLS got me half way there but fails with an odd error message and its output isn't particularly user friendly and I'm working with roughly 2Tb/250,000 files here so I really need something that gives me a bit more functionality. Question : does anyone have any experience of something similar/know of a bit of software that might help me out?

  I'm having a two WD external hard disk with capacity of 1 TB. I'm trying to copy SAP file(capacity - 250 GB ) in the extension of .vmdk from one hard disk to another hard disk. But when ever i'm trying to copy, at down to the line it showing me this error message. By default my both hard disk File System value is NFTS, even though it showing me an this error message. • Prioritize file sharing performance in Windows Server 2008

  I've got a server running Windows Server 2008, and use it mainly for sharing files throughout the domain from a number of disks. It's running on VMware ESXi 4.0, in case that matters. My problem is that when I log in to the server to check user permissions etc, the access speed the files on the remote disks almost grinds to a halt. I havn't been able to measure the speeds, but I would guess it slows down to about 100kB/s as soon as I log in. This is on a gigabit network and the problems are equal for all users, even the ones connected to the same switch as the server. I've assigned 2 GB RAM to the server, and reserved it 1,5Ghz processor power. I don't have to do anything special on the server for this halt to occur. How can I make sure file sharing is prioritized on the server, so no matter what applications I'm using it will always make sure file sharing works properly? Could this be a VMware issue?

• Importing Bookmarks from a Text File (to any browser/website)

  I have dozens of text files containing around 60 url's each, accumulated over years of browsing on multiple computers. I wish to import these into any browser, to allow me to then use cross-browser importing. My ultimate goal is to then import the bookmarks to somewhere like delicious, which will automatically tag the links, allowing me to sort each page by subject. The closest I've managed to find is: Import bookmarks to firefox from txt file However while this plugin imports from a text file, it has no correlation with Firefox's bookmarks, and only allows you to export back to csv/txt files. I understand that the problem of importing from text files is that bookmarks need a Title, and so I wish to use a given pages existing title. I've been unable to find any such tool on the net.

• Windows batch file reference to own directory

  Suppose you have C:\foo\foo.bat which needs to refer to C:\foo\foo.txt. It may be run from a different directory, but needs to get foo.txt from its own directory, not the current directory. Obviously this could be done by putting the full path C:\foo\foo.txt in foo.bat. The twist is, it's not known at the time of writing the batch file, where it will end up residing on the user's machine, so what the batch file actually needs to do is get foo.txt from the directory where I live, wherever that happens to be. (In a C program I'd use argv[0] but that doesn't seem to work with batch files.) Is there a way to do this?

  I can get it to read the text file until it becomes a comma delimited text file. I would like to read the two variables on each line and test each one with a If statement for another condition.   so i can ping the ip adress for the server i need but when i ping it by name, the server name is followed by an incorrect ip address. My host file is updated, i can communicate with my machine from my server just fine. i can access websites on the server by typing the ip adress into the adress bar followed by the name. it is like my machine is ignoring my hosts file... i have updated re updated...flushed dns, u name it ive done it any ideas?

  Goal: Since the system disk is a RAID 1 mirrored set, we can rebuild the shadow set by replacing one of the good sets with a blank disk Steps Shutdown and power down server Remove the disk from bay 9, which is part of the system shadow set. Put this disk on the shelf Insert blank/old disk into the empty bay     Label the new disk before inserting it into the empty bay       Power up server During the booting process, the following message appears: “Some configured disks have been removed from your system…”       Press ‘C’ to Load Configuration utility             Press 'Y' to confirm to load the foreign configuration       In this example, the system shadow set is Disk Group 2.  (Before proceeding, confirm this is the disk group in your case).  Expanding the physical disks shows a disk in bay 8 and a missing disk in bay 9.  This is correct.   Now, we have to include the new inserted disk in this group       RAID controller reporting bay 9 is empty       There may be times when the new disk is seen as a foreign disk.  In this case, do the following:     Foreign disk is reported in bay 9 CTRL-N (Next Page) to Foreign Mgt All the disk groups will be displayed.  Typically, the disk group containing the foreign disk will be grey.  To remove the foreign disk Highlight Controller Press F2 Select Foreign Select Clear (do NOT import the configuration!)       Clear the foreign configuration Now the disk can be brought into the system shadow set disk group as a hot spare   To include the newly inserted disk into the system shadowset disk group, it must be brought in as a hot spare Highlight Disk Group 2 (VD Management) Hit F2 Select 'Manage Ded. • Flexible cloud file storage for a web.py app?

  I'm creating a web app using web.py (although I may later rewrite it for Tornado) which involves a lot of file manipulation. One example, the app will have a git-style 'commit' operation, in which some files are sent to the server and placed in a new folder along with the unchanged files from the last version. This will involve copying the old folder to the new folder, replacing/adding/deleting the files in the commit to the new folder, then deleting all unchanged files in the old folder (as they are now in the new folder). I've decided on Heroku for the app hosting environment, and I am currently looking at cloud storage options that are built with these kinds of operations in mind. I was thinking of Amazon S3, however I'm not sure if that lets you carry out these kinds of file operations in-place. I was thinking I may have to load these files into the server's RAM and then re-insert them into the bucket, costing me a fortune. I was also thinking of Progstr Filer (http://filer.progstr.com/index.html) but that seems to only integrate with Rails apps. Can anyone help with this? Basically I want file operations to be as cheap as possible.

• Read only file system

  I'm running Ubuntu 12.10, Upon opening any shell I get the following error: /home/jack/.rbenv/libexec/rbenv-init: line 87: cannot create temp file for here-document: Read-only file system I realised this wasn't simply a rbenv issue, as any file I try to write to returns an error saying the system is Read-only. I don't know how else to describe my problem, each time I boot up the system goes through a disk check, where it supposedly fixes several errors in my disk. Here is my /etc/fstab # <file system> <mount point> <type> <options> <dump> <pass> proc /proc proc nodev,noexec,nosuid 0 0 # / was on /dev/sda1 during installation UUID=1cc4b2ab-a984-4516-ac25-6d64f5050244 / ext4 errors=remount-ro 0 1 # swap was on /dev/sda5 during installation UUID=4e0dfeae-701a-43ce-b5c6-65f15ab3d8e3 none swap sw 0 0 The entire file system is read-only. • Complex knowledge management system with CRM..written internally

  We've all heard of salesforce and sugarcrm and the likes of systems like this. Unfortunately at my workplace we have been asked to write a similiar system (rather then license or purchase). Basically the database is fairly large. Think of modules such as: Corporate groups, customers, programs, projects, sub projects, and issue management. In simple terms a corporate group has one to many customers. A program has one or more projects. A project has one or more sub projects. And an issue can be created on many sub projects. Of course the system is a bit more complex but instead of listing every single module I think its best to keep it simple. In any event, the system in its current state has only two resources to be working on it (basically we have to do it all: CSS, database, jquery, asp.net and C#). We've started off well by defining the UI master and footer pages that way we can reuse those across all of our pages. Now comes the hard part. The system will have about 4k end users with say 5-10% being concurrent users. We are wondering if it makes sense to cache our database data (For say 5-10 minutes) rather then continously hit our database. The reason being is some of these pages may have 5-10 search filters associated with the page. Imagine every time a selection is made from a search box how many database hits. Also some of these search fields cascade so selecting for instance an initial drop down may cascade several drop down boxes under them. Is it wrong to cache because I am not finding too many articles on whether it is a good idea or not. Remember the system is similiar to say a CRM system where we manage our various customers, projects, sub projects, issues, etc.

  As far as I can tell, most games have some sort of "game state system" which switches between the different game states; these might be things like "Intro", "MainMenu", "CharacterSelect", "Loading", and "Game". On the one hand, it totally makes sense to separate these into a state system. After all, they are disparate and would otherwise need to be in a large switch statement, which is obviously messy; and they certainly are well represented by a state system. But at the same time, I look at the "Game" state and wonder if there's something wrong about this state system approach. Because it's like the elephant in the room; it's HUGE and obvious but nobody questions the game state system approach. It seems silly to me that "Game" is put on the same level as "Main Menu". Yet there isn't a way to break up the "Game" state. Is a game state system the best way to go? Is there some different, better technique to managing, well, the "game state"? Is it okay to have an intro state which draws a movie and listens for enter, and then a loading state which loops on the resource manager, and then the game state which does practically everything? Doesn't this seem sort of unbalanced to you, too? Am I missing something?
